Agree. Felix had that rugged look more than the rest of GJ casts, CMIIW...

All boys these days are too pretty, which is why I'm more invested in Michael Miu and Ray Lui. Or perhaps I'm really an oldie...

Depends on what you mean by "higher quality production" and "the kind of quality found in Korean/Japanese/Western TV dramas".

If you meant gorgeous sceneries, better costumes and crisper/brighter cinematography, the Mainland China production has been getting better the last few years. The only Jin Yong adaptation I've seen are the 83-86 Condor Trilogies (LOCH 82/83, ROCH 83 and HSDS 86). I love the LOCH and HSDS ones due to the intense emotions the actors and actresses displayed in the scenes. I love the three of them (and also most of the 80s HK productions I've seen) due to the pleasing fight scenes (very minimum cables and almost no CGI); they truly somersaulted, backflipped and cart-wheeled, instead of flying the way the the Mainland China productions tend to do these days.

But perhaps it's true that they're aiming for the Korean market, hence the very pretty boys as the main actors. Since I'm from an older generation (I was barely a teenager when LOCH 83, CLH 84 etc were aired), i prefer the more rugged looks of the 80s actors. They were also gorgeous, but they have more manly qualities in them. These days, put those pretty boys in girls' costumes and they might as well just play the female characters...

At times, the looks needs to fit the situation. Yang Kang, being bought up in a "nice" environment, could look pretty. Michael Miu will suit the role. (I believe Icha Parvati will fully agree). Huang Rong, being bought up in Peach Blossom Island, is also expected to be pretty and well-dressed. GJ, should look more muscular and rough for living in a "rugged" environment.

    LOL!!! I agree ^_^

I guess what i'm objecting to is a look that is too-pretty for a role. Like, YK is a prince, hence he should dress well and look grand (and spoilt, in his case). But he's also a fighter and a good horse rider (should be, at least, for the Jurchens excelled at horse-riding too). Hence his built should be larger than the common pretty boys these days, and he should have somewhat a manly appearance, tho well-dressed. Michael's look for Yang Kang fit him perfectly IMO. The current Yang Kang is still too pretty for my liking... but then, that's what I think of all the younger cast in this series and other Mainland series made in the last few years anyway...

I also agree that GJ should be rougher, if not too muscular, hence my liking Felix' portrayal for GJ (not to mention that GJ could be so dim-witted at times...which Felix portrayed perfectly).

One more photo of Michael Miu as Huang Yaoshi here:

And Ray Lui (Lu Liangwei) has been confirmed as the Southern Emperor (Yi Deng). I'll try to find a photo of his. I love Ray in the 86 Flying Fox as Wu Fei.

This GJ looks way too much like a kpop idol rather than a rugged, dumb boy living in Mongolia.

Mu Nianci is pretty. Her looks and posture remind me of Mu Wanqing in the other China series.

This pic just smacks of Chinese Anakin Skywalker (with the dark overtone), and Chinese Padm Amidala right there:

Speaking of Anakin, a few months ago I actually saw the similarities between Yang Kang and Anakin, particularly when YK refused to join the light side in Ep 14 of LOCH 1983. Specifically, that is after YK was beaten by his own soldiers because they thought he was just a beggar. Then YK was put in house arrest by Wanyan Honglie, and when the Jin emperor came to talk with YK, the boy originally refused the trinkets, but he eventually yielded and re-embraced his princely status once more.

which caused me to put this meme on that post:

Yes. Another possible reason is that XLN tends to wear "white".

That shot of the two lead looks really good!

At first I wasn't interested in another adaptation. But this actually might be good.

So, will you be doing the usual = Posting the videos for us to follow?
I think I will still give it a miss as the storyline will be about the same.
