Next, there is this one character played by a Korean actor. But apparently all his scenes were completely removed from FoD after THAAD was deployed in South Korea a couple of months ago. Would be interesting to see if the drama shows any awkwardness in the aftermath of said removal (ie. story shows some inconsistencies/lack of fluidity/continuity).

Up to episode 9 now. The quality has remained consistent right from the beginning.

There's a scene straight from the Hobbit: Smaug the Dragon appears guarding a pile of gold, but this dragon is female and has human form as well. Very interesting...

This drama has an epic feel to it, which is why I'm looking forward to the movie version as well.

The shows pretty good, no dragging, or annoying characters. I will like to c this same cast play in wuxia serial, ie new heaven sword remake, or proud twins, or twin of brothers, new chor lau heung

Episode 17 has v good wuxia fight scene between main hero and evil other sect char (just pure wuxia w/o any [major] xianxia).

So, far I have never entertained thoughts of dropping the series, not even once.

If I had to give the drama a tentative rating, it would be way higher than what I had given to 3L3W!

On episode 21 now. Really digging the series. What sets it apart from something like Naruto is it doesn't drag. Naruto needs something like 7 episodes to slog thru a tournament/trial. Also really loving the space-time story themes. For a xianxia series, it watches more like a sci-fi than a fantasy drama...

I was looking at YT and noticed they had episodes up to 55, but the version I was watching ended at Ep52, and was wondering where that came from.

This might explain it:

"While the series was originally supposed to be 55 episodes, the number of episodes was later reduced to 52 episodes."

"A less tragic Nirvana in Fire meets Lord of the Rings!

I writing this review with 9 episodes left (I wanna take the rest nice and slow coz I don't want this awesome drama to end).

It's important to note that the drama went into production before the author finished writing the web novel, so if anything the movie version might be truer to the original work and differ from the drama.

OK, enough of OT stuff, back to the core of review:


Fans of Lord of the Rings will rejoice that FotD is essentially a reimagining. You have the Star Formation that gives power to the Empress that is essentially the One Ring. It is essentially detrimental to Empress (it's actually something evil that is controlling her), yet she has trouble letting the precious-s-s go.

Then, there is CCS dagger-like sword that looks like Bilbo's Sting dagger. And of course the little dragon ZS is modeled after Smaug the Dragon from The Hobbit, but a good kind dragon, not an evil one. Then, when LL teased ZS with hard-to-guess riddles, that scene essentially imitated "Riddles in the Dark" between Bilbo and Gollum in The Hobbit.

Superimposed over this are scenes remiscient of Nirvana in Fire: Sick guy returns to the Capital to attain his destiny, elite guards getting murdered to frame someone, the main hero can't actually fight against powerful villains but uses his cunning to subdue them, an Imperial ruler that is cold and "heartless" even towards her own child, etc.

Nevertheless, the drama packs an awesome punch coz let's face it there is nothing new under the sun, only inspiration from some works that existed before!"

OMG, lol, episode 46, ZS the dragonness saves CCS from being sacrificed. That's the one thing I hate about the drama, there are scenes like this that are 10x more EPIC than Lord of the Rings, but we're given a low-budget TV interpretation instead of maxed out cinema visual SFX!!!! Hopefully the movie adaptation could up the visuals on scenes like in Ep 46 a few extra levels...

Just finished watching the drama. Here's how it stacks up. The reason why I'm docking .5 a point off NiF is it takes itself too seriously, and there is no boss fight at the end.

Anyways, both FotD and NiF are essentially the same story: Guy falls off a cliff vs being pushed off a ledge as a sacrifice. He's related to the Emperor/Empress and returns as a sick guy to the capital many years later to attain his destiny, but [almost] nobody recognizes him. A bunch of stuff happen in between. And in the last episode, his peer ascends to the throne as the new ruler.

The main difference between NiF and FotD is NiF is rooted heavily in LotR, while FotD takes more cues from its prequel, The Hobbit:

Just finished this series and was surprised how good it was. I usually don't too much fantasy and magic in my dramas, but this did a good job.

The cast really good and I liked how they complimented each other. I love the actress that played the dragon! She was so funny.

That is surprising! He was maybe a small role? Everything seemed to be not awkward.

I was looking at YT and noticed they had episodes up to 55, but the version I was watching ended at Ep52, and was wondering where that came from.

I saw the end of both 55 and 52 and they are about the same. On YT, the 55 series is labeled as the TV version, but the 52 is labeled as the No Cut version. So I'm not sure.

Why was he getting such a feminine hairstyle? He was in another cooking in the palace series with Trinh Sang and has the same hairstyle too. Sorry, I'm not Chinese, idk the correct name of the actress from that Love 2O series.
