Probably most of the girls will not shine much either besides Zhou Xun (from my guess), kind of like another Wei Young drama where she gets frame for every single thing. But with the help of 90+ episodes they'll probably each have enough screen time.

Also, the novel story was told from the point of view of the main actor of this drama, Empress Ruyi. This drama is all about her. They have a few experienced actors in this drama so we cannot say that the other girls and guys will not shine. There are well known names like Dong Jie, Vivian Wu, Li Qin, Janine Chang ...

Oh. The Qianlong in here doesn't sound nice. I don't think I'll like him. Ruyi/Qingying wasn't particularly likeable either, in the Legend of Zhen Huan. If I neither like nor can root for the protagonists, there will be little chance of me sticking with a show (especially one with a whopping 90 episode count). I do hope that will not be the case here!

Ruyi in this drama is not the Ruyi in Legend of Zhen Huan. Ruyi has always been painted as the evil one even in the famous Qiong Yau's Huan Zhu Ge Ge. I think in this novel, she is not painted as evil. The evil one is the third Empress who has always been painted as nice and kind.

Ivy made this wonderful video on Wallace's role as Emperor Qianlong. The English subtitles are translated from his own comments on his role. He said that he could feel the overwhelming loneliness of the emperor. He said that Qianlong's multi-faceted and he is happy to play Qianlong. Thank you Ivy for the wonderful video of stills. Love Ivy's choice of music.

I look forward to Wallace's intepretation of Qianlong.

Oh, thanks. Interesting. I went to look up the real-life counterparts of the characters in history. The third empress

won it all, so to speak. (Using spoiler tags for the show may stay faithful to history.)

I am intrigued by Imperial Noble Consort Shujia. She had four children, all sons. And three survived to adulthood. Two of whom had long lives. Not an easy feat in the palace in those days, surely?

    The first empress seemed

nice all round and truly loved by her husband, who was said to have "often visited her grave with wistful longing, and remained heartbroken to the end of his days" (Wikipedia).

    poor woman:

He also gradually reduced the number of servants Lady Ulanara had, until the empress was only left with two maids by July. This was the number of servants low-ranking consorts had. Lady Ulanara died a year later at the age of 48. (Wikipedia)

Qianlong held whatever it was against her till her death. Even after her death. She was buried "in a way similar to how servants were buried beside their masters" (Wikipedia).

Loneliness. It appears emperors are often portrayed as not very happy men. Amongst her other reasons for doing so, it seemed Zhen Huan was also smart to let Qianlong take the throne and thus the fall, so to speak, for her son.

"Emperors are often portrayed as not very happy men"... I suppose the old wise saying, 'the room on top is often lonely'. What more if it is set in ancient times where it was survival of the fittest or most cruel. You either kill or be killed. And certainly the constant change of dynasties proved it.

No one, until today know what happened to the relationship between Qian Long and Ruyi for her to end up dying without being given the rightful honours. Rumours and past dramas indicated that she made Qianlong angry by cutting her hair to spite him. And that she might have requested for a 'commoner' funeral. I am wondering, if Qianlong really hated her, he could kill her in many ways being the Emperor. Anyway, all are guesswork. This is only a drama so nothing in the drama is the truth except some of the characters.

    Close to zero.
This is sequel for a series that didn't show any fighting besides some guards arresting some characters.
