    Default Asian 3D Movies Archive

Did you know that anyone can watch 3D movies on any computer, laptop, or tablet PC? I'll tell you guys how in a bit.

Anyways, I'm starting this thread for Asian productions marketed as available in 3D format. Despite the slowing global sales of 3D TV's, 3D movies aren't going away anytime soon b/c 3D cinema is big business in China (and other Asian countries)!

My review of L.O.R.D: Legend of Ravaging Dynasties (2016)

    Likes:

~ It takes Hollywood at least 3 movies to fully develop 7 characters. Asians only need 1 movie to do it. By the end of L.O.R.D., you knew something about every single character in the characters roster poster above.
~ Top notch CGI environments. The fireworks and flying scenes were really well done.
~ The funny parts were actually funny and neither slapstick nor corny.
~ I'm a sucker for any J.R.R. Tolkien LotR-inspired Asian fantasy work, and this movie is one of them.
~ The story is actually pretty good bordering on ingenious. But it was executed rather poorly b/c the screenplay/script felt like something between a first draft and polished version, probably b/c the writer and director (both the same person) had to meet deadlines.

    Dislikes:

~ Weirdest parts were the eyes and facial expressions. Look in the motion capture clips, they hired a bunch of White guys to create this part of the movie. China should learn to develop their own facial and eyes motion capture tech. Put 'em Whities to shame... Like how they did with their own 5th gen stealth fighter, which is in many ways superior to the American one.
~ Music was unmemorable. I didn't remember a single tune from the movie. Oh well, music score was done by a Japanese guy actually so that might explain why it sounded so generic and uninspiring like every other fantasy anime themes out there. They should have recruited a Chinese composer instead. Just look at DragonNest: Warrior's Dawn, all composed by/with Chinese talent and probably the best LotR-inspired Fantasy movie soundtrack I had heard in years.
~ Male nudity (CGI William Chan, I'm looking at you), and attempted female nude in-bed scene at the end. Please can we just have a good fantasy movie to enjoy w/o too much CGI sexy?

    Verdict: Good (8.0 / 10)

My review of The White Haired Witch of Lunar Kingdom (2014)

    Likes:

~ It looked good in 3D with lots of pretty sceneries and nice locations. Director seems to have a knack for capturing settings beautifully for conversion to 3D.
~ When the GrandMaster of Mt Wudang temple committed suicide by jumping off Mt Wudang, I was like "wow did he just jump off the actual cliff suspended by wires, or was it done in front of a green screen. It was so well done post conversion in 3D, I really couldn't tell.
~ Every char in the movie annoyed me, including the main protagonists pair, except for the main villain played by Vincent Zhao. Movie actually explored some of the things tormenting Zhao's character.

    Dislikes:

~ This is one of those movies where they hire big stars to make up for other deficiencies, and they were many ranging from bad script, poor editing, to monotonous dialogues.
~ The way the action scenes played out made me confused for the first 43 minutes as to what actually transpired on the screen. 15 mins to set the pace for the movie is okay. But com'on, +40 minutes?
~ I found every single char in the movie, except for the main villain annoying. They all wanted to save ppl they barely met, even risking their lives/reputation/status, and I found that very strange. Once again, the only colorful character in the movie was the main villain.
~ Ending was really cheesy where the movie tried to 1up Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon by having 3 characters fall off a cliff instead of one. But the super cheesy part was when Fan BingBing's character transformed into Wonder-woman right before the climatic battle.

    Verdict: Average (6.5 / 10)

STEP 1: You will need a 3D video source. It should contain 2 separate images per frame, one meant for each eye. Usually the images are arranged [half]-over-and-under ([H]OU) each other within the frame, or [half]-side-by-side ([H]SBS). If you plan on watching the video on an actual 3D TV, OU videos will look clearer/sharper than SBS. But the format doesn't really matter on a computer, laptop, or tablet PC.

Example of a 3D video in side-by-side (SBS) format:

STEP 2: A pair of red-blue (red-cyan) anaglyph glasses is a must to view the video in 3D. These glasses also come in green-purple (green-magenta). They should work with the steps outlined below. But red-blue glasses are the most common.

A good source of anaglyph glasses is eBay. There are nice, curvy plastic anaglyph glasses on eBay, but they don't fit over corrective lenses for people who wear them. I have found paper anaglyph glasses to produce a very comfortable viewing experience regardless of whether someone wears corrective lenses or not. They sell 10 pairs of them on eBay for $3 shipped to North America from China.

STEP 3: You will need a video player that can show an OU, or SBS 3D video as anaglyph 3D. The current top 3 3D media players that can do this:

Software (operating system) - license type - download location/web site

    ~ Cyberlink PowerDVD (Windows 7 and above) - paid license - www.cyberlink.com

    ~ SMPlayer (Windows XP and above; Linux) - free/GNU - http://smplayer.sourceforge.net/

SMPlayer is my personal favorite. It comes in a portable version (no need to install anything) that you can put on a USB flash drive.
    ~ KMPlayer (Windows XP and above; Mac beta; Android/iOS) - free/adware - http://kmplayer.com/

STEP 4: The instructions below apply only to SMPlayer, but they should be similar for other media players.

Open the 3D video in SMPlayer and let it play for a few seconds, then pause or stop the movie.

Go to: Video -> Stereo 3D filter.

(If you don't see this option, you are probably in tablet mode. Go to Options and uncheck Tablet mode.)

A dialogue box should now appear. Select Auto for 3D format of the video, and Anaglyph red/cyan half colored (best) for Output format.

The video might appear too tall, or too short at this point.

Go to Video -> Aspect ratio. Change it until the image looks right.

Put on your 3D glasses and enjoy the movie.

This is what the video (from Step 1) should look like:
