Post Round Robin Fic (Modern) ?

Hiya folks

There are some interesting Wuxia round robin fanfics here, but I was wondering if anyone is keen to do a modern version.

If so, post here with your suggestions. I am thinking of eight characters, for now, and setting of your choice, but try not to use names of celebrities (for example, Louis Koo kissed Jessica Hsuan).

I'd like to gauge the response before we start proper (if we start ). Thanks for reading.

Hi Junny - you can count me in...
What kind of characters do you have in mind?

One of my many story outlines which I devised in my schooldays (when I should have been studying harder) was based around a wealthy business man who cleverly balanced his life around a family in Hong Kong and one in England. The complications are introduced when his youngest son from HK goes to study in the UK and unknowingly ends up at the same university as his daughter from the UK.

You then have the two settings for the story - the university life of the children and the power struggles of the family when they eventually find out about the other's existance.

I have others if you don't like this.... or maybe you have something else up your sleeve...

I like that idea of yours, Em That should allow for plenty of angst

I'm open to suggestions, really. I have nothing concrete in terms of plot (me good only for angst and more angst ) I'm only picky when it comes to the names for the leading characters (if we eventually settle on writing the fic!) Now, how silly can I get?

Oh well, may as well share my notes... (Em reaches for her creative file) - there are more than eight characters though! If I put their character profiles here, you can choose names and get rid as you wish!

Wealthy businessman from Hong Kong who has established himself from humble beginnings. Has offices in the UK (name a town?) as well as in HK and being a very hands-on fella, he flies around a lot. (Obviously he has a second family and we can look into how he manages to balance this...)

Wife in HK - typical rich wife and doting mother...

Eldest HK Son - not at all interested in business so has put his energies into his model shop where he spends all his time. Big kid...

Second HK Son - Power hungry and money grabbing and eager to take over his father's empire.

Third HK Son - A little naive, but very confident around women and often gets himself into trouble. When he gets kicked out of university in HK, he is sent to study in the UK on the instruction of his mother.

Mistress in UK - well aware that her lover has a family in HK, but willing to stay faithful and loving towards him. Runs a grocery store in Chinatown, eager not to have to depend on his rich background.

Daughter in UK - Pretty, loveable and hardworking. Understanding of her parent's predicament, but yearns for her father's attention.

Son in UK (?? Not sure about this character) - has a major hatred of his father and resents his position.

"Adopted son" of UK Wife - helps out the two women in times of need but is a bit of a tearaway, often hanging out with the Chinatown triad gangs. Detests the rich fella who in turn doesn't like him hanging around his family.

The Students
(I have given these guys names, but feel free to change them...)
Angela - Half-chinese, full of fun and up for anything as long as it doesn't mess up her hair or break her nails
Danny - Son of triad leader who is softer than he looks
Yvonne - Another HK student from a rich background and has the hots for Danny to the point where she will feed any venture he has
James - He's a bit soft
Hon - Banana...

The Rich Folk
Numerous characters who have business dealings, love interests, genuine friendships etc with the family in HK...

Ooh.. getting all excited! heehee...

Woohoo, Em! Well done you. Sounds like we got ourselves a sizzling plot I gotta think of the names and get back to you, but I like the bit about Hon

Eight was just a rough number (I usually work with this amount of characters), but am good to change Round robin means more the merrier

So... the students wouldn't happen to also be the sons & daughters of this rich man, would they? And I smell a romance somewhere featuring this adopted son

I like Danny already

Looking forward to see what names you come up with for these people (then I can compare them with my original notes) ...

I think the rich guy has enough sons and daughters for now, we need to have some people who aren't related to develop the romantic interests for the characters in the family.

Anyone else joining in?
Otherwise this is gonna end up being a junny and Em collaboration more than a round robin!
Come on... promise you don't have to do that much!!

I like Danny too and Hon just oozes with potential for laughs! (Plenty of real life stories can be written into him.... )

Oh - about the title, my original working title was "Foreign Land" but open to suggestions.

for Em! Thanks so much for visiting my website and leaving a note in the guestbook. Did you manage to get round to clicking on the other stories?

Yak: Hiya, do join in the writing! More the merrier.

Alright, me back with the names (bear with me, I'm thinking on the spot! )

Wealthy businessman: Henry Sung (well, you can replace Sung with any other surname)

Wife in HK: Anna

Eldest HK Son - Derek

Second HK Son - William

Third HK Son - Ryan

Mistress in UK - Grace

Daughter in UK - Katherine

Son in UK - Ethan

"Adopted son" of UK Wife - Julian (I seem to have a firm preference for this name now ) I think Jules and Danny are good friends

The Students: am fine with the names of the students

The Rich Folk: think we can come up with names whenever they feature.

Bleah. I hope they're OK. Feel free to change

Wah junny - gonna have to change that surname... you've managed to hit on my late grandad's name! (His English name when he was a sailor was Henry... and my surname was Sung until I got married! Also I have an uncle who was named after him!) And can we change the name of his HK wife to Anne instead of Anna (my sister's name! haha). Ta!

My original character had the surname Chung - is that okay???

The other names are all okay!

Nice site u got there junny ... will add reading your stories to my list of things to do before the next millenium! hehe

So, when do we start?

Suggest you guys consider having rules in place (e.g., each story has to finish on a cliffhanger, etc.) and also having a writer's schedule/structure -- not a time limit, but at least the knowledge of who is starting the ball rolling, who goes second, third, otherwise it could get messy.

Sorry, not to be a downer here, but I've seen waaaaay too many round robins deteriorate due to people not knowing who's up next! (Plus, I'm anal-retentive and can't resist giving my $0.02, and I love the sound of my keyboard clacking... ).

Thanks for your advice Ari - I think that a rotation schedule would be a good idea, but we need to make sure we include anyone else who wants to join in later. Let's just see how it goes for now, as I think there will just be a few of us doing most of the writing for the time being.

I have given this a tentative title for the time being - can easily be changed later. Here is my beginning, hope you like it...

---------------------------------------

異地
Different Worlds

Chapter 1
One Morning, Two families

The full moon sheds its brightness through the crisp dark sky, through the crack of the curtains and casting a ray of light across the desk of this small room. However, the scene is far from tranquil as Katherine tosses and turns, trying to fall asleep amidst the clatter of Mah Jong tiles coming from the dining room below. She hates Tuesday evenings.

“Wake up Mr Ryan! You are going to be late!“
Sakura, the youthful housekeeper, pulls open the blinds and the blinding sunshine floods the room reflecting off the mass of grey and silver that indicates this is the room of a modern man. Against the opposite wall, is placed a lavish semi-circular double bed where Ryan lies curled up snugly in the foetal position, not stirred in the slightest by the commotion.

“Pung Ah!
Thank you... I win! Pay up pay up... “
Every week on their day off from their work in their take-aways and restaurants, Grace's friends drop by for a few dozen games to shake off their stresses and catch up on the local gossip. Katherine is used to it after eighteen long years, but she still cannot stand or sleep through the noise. Usually she would stay up until after they leave in the early hours of the morning, but she has an important interview for her university place the next day and she really needs the rest. Wrapping her pillow around her ears to try and drown the racket and she steers her eyes around the room for something to concentrate her thoughts on. Following the moonbeams, her glance stops on the picture in her bookshelf. Her family - herself, her brother Ethan, her mother Grace and a man.

The same man appears with Ryan on another photograph that has been knocked off a desk by a low flying pillow.
”Go away Sakura! I'll get up in a minute.”
Ryan the grouch has awoken slightly and is slowly prying his eyes apart as time and time again they are slammed shut by the pain of the light reflecting from his retinas. Sakura shakes her head and smiles as she leaves the room and calls over to the heap on the bed.
“It’s ten to nine, I thought you had a big day today…”
Stunned by the time and realising that he does indeed have a big day ahead of him, Ryan is rudely dragged out of slumberland and bounces up in his bed like a tensioned elastic band.

Just as she begins to drift off to sleep, a hammering on the front door followed by screams of horror pull Katherine back into the realms of consciousness and she jumps up in a reflex action to run downstairs to see what the commotion is. Barefoot and dressed in just her pyjamas, Katherine finds her brother’s head covered in a splashing of blood and her mother hysterically rushing around the kitchen looking for something to mop it up with. Katherine is speechless and does not respond when the pallid guests make their excuses and head for the door. Luckily, Julian has accompanied Ethan home and is busy calming down Grace and tending to Ethan’s wounds.
“What happened?”
Katherine finally finds some words in her totally stunned mind.
“Don’t worry Katherine, he’s not badly injured. I found him fighting against some of Danny’s gang.”

“My disciplinary hearing – it’s in ten minutes. No time for breakfast…”
Ryan grabs a bread roll from the dining table where his mother Anne and brother William are finishing their bacon and eggs. He rushes outside to the yard where his shiny Yamaha motorbike is parked, throwing on his crash helmet and signalling to the chauffer to open the gates to the luxury mansion where his family live. Flying through the streets up towards Hong Kong University, he is easily breaking the speed limit but he doesn’t care – his family can afford the fines, but he can’t get kicked out of university. Hurtling into the grounds of the college, he doesn’t even care to park his bike as he throws it on the grass and runs into the reception of his faculty. Still in his biking leathers, he runs up the winding staircase and down the long foreboding corridor up to a door that has inscribed on the front: “Professor Ma, Head of Law Faculty”. Taking a look at his watch, he grits his teeth as he knocks on the door as the time on his Rolex reads “9:07”.

Whoa. This is a tough act to follow up, Em! I'll endeavour to do my best

OK, first the rules. Since it's gonna be Em, me, Yak and jeh (Yak says she might not contribute much), let's do it this way:

Em starts first.
Then it's me
Then comes jeh
And then Yak (if you can't post an instalment, please post a note in this thread so that we know!)

If anyone wants to join, please post a note to confirm and his/her turn comes after Yak (or replaces Yak if she cannot post an instalment).

Each person has maximum 5 days from the date of the previous instalment to post an instalment. Or is that too long?

Each instalment must deal with at least one of the main characters of the story as listed by Em. Each instalment must also be at least 3 paragraphs long (come on, otherwise we can't have a story!).

Anyone else has anything to add?

five days? No problem, I'm not that busy, hehehe. Count me in, if I can't make it I'll post that I'll pass, okay? I'm kind of nervous about writing along with you guys, Em sound so professional, I'm not that good with words and grammar, I don't really want to ruin everything =o(. Okay let make it this way so I don't feel too pressured. You guy could delete my post or edit my post if you think it horrible. I won't mind, I want this to be a good fanfic for everyone to read! =o)

Oh yeah, I'm after jeh right?
