Default Authors like Jin Yong with novels that would make great TV series?

I LOVE these Jin Yong TV shows the most. For me, these have the best plot and everything (Action, Kung Fu, etc) was really happy with Legend Of Condor Heroes 2017.

Now, my question is, what authors have written novels that's like Jin Yong's work? I don't imagine there are anyone else that can come CLOSE to Jin Yong, but at least somewhat good as Jin Yong, maybe 50-70% of JY's level?

If there are authors like JY, then who are these people? Which TV series are made already from these novels? Which TV series are in the works?

Also, I am kinda surprised the fandom of Jin Yong works in China hasn't gotten to the level that of Star Wars like in America. So many remakes, but there aren't any annual conventions, huge merchandises, or anything like that.

While Gu Long may not be as popular as JY, I believe many of the older generation will have watched TV series based on his novels, such as Xiaoli Feidao (小李飛刀系列); Chu Liuxiang series (楚留香系列); Lu Xiaofeng series (陸小鳳系列); Reincarnated 天蚕变 and The Twins 绝代双骄.

Yeah I saw XiaoLi Feidao series with Yang Rong last year. Not as much Kung Fu, but I say that series was pretty good.

Will have to check the others, I am not sure if I saw those others yet. Thanks for letting me know.

Unfortunately, there aren't many authors good like Jin Yong.

Gu Long wrote some pretty nice longer stories - although his more famous ones are the short stories with recurring characters such as the Feidao series, Lu Xiaofeng and Chu Liuxiang, none of which have the same sort of feel because they are mostly shorter stories.

Some of his longer stories such as Sword and the Exquisiteness and Flower Guarding Bell would make for some really good wuxia serials, but I've never seen them made into serials. There's TVB's old version of TSATE but I can't find it anywhere.

There is also Liang Yusheng is also good. I've never watched a good version of The Seven Swords so if they can remake that with proper budget would be great. Not the biggest fan of his works but his stories are interesting.

The Water Legend remake would be nice too. Forgot who the author is. I watched the 1970s version and was totally smitten by the story.

Interesting read on modern chinese authors for those interested.

The Seven Swords adaptation is the one with Vincent Jiao and the young Qiao Zhenyu, right? I havent found one with proper eng sub. I'm kinda interested in White Haired Lady, but the ending is too sad so it's hard for me to follow the story

How about the Four Constables? Is the novel good? I've watched/skimmed through several adaptations of it, but each one has a different story. I dunno which one is the original one

The Vincent Zhao one is the one I was talking about. I didn't like that adaption since I didn't think the actors fitted the characters and the plot was kinda slow. The clothes were ugly too.

The Four is generally the same across the board, I've not read the novel for so long I don't remember much of it.

The Water Legend *not margin* from the 1970s was actually I believe an adaption of The Vander Bow, same film as the Michelle and Raymond Lam 2000s version. Only with different characters.

My memory of the Water Legend is very very hazy, but I don't recall the story being based on Lofty Water Verdant Bow. Having said that, those few scenes I remember don't necessarily have to fit into LWVB if it's just loosely based on the story. Water Legend had a rather sad ending, though, iirc.

Killer soundtrack, and a star-studded cast which will be hard to replicate these days, though.

There was also an adaptation of LWVB around the same time, also by ATV:-

Looks like Ma Mun Yee was Lai Sing Nam and Choi Sin Yee was Kuk Chi Wah - just judging from the way they act during the song

I quite like the CLX series. I have watched three different versions:
    1. Adam Cheng
    2. Michael Miu
    3. Ken Chang (2012).

Been wasting more time on Youtube during work!

Some martial arts scenes from LWVB. The lightsabre part was a bit lame, but the old ATV actors and actresses really knew how to use a sword. Everyone knows how good Moon Lee was at martial arts choreography, but I never realised Choi Sin Yee looked so good in wuxia too. On a side note, I wonder if John Williams ever knew how much his Star Wars soundtrack was used in the 70s and 80s by ATV, and how much they added to the classic feel of these nostalgic serials!

Loved this version. I enjoyed the TVB one with Raymond, but this version was my childhood.

That old theme song still haunts me.

    I see, thanks!
Yeah, I skimmed the Seven Swordsman and it did look rather slow. Just curious about the story, though

Ah I always thought it was based on it, but glad to know there was another adaption.

But yes The Water Legend was such a sad ending, I am Mai Suet bias so I was all keen on her to win, I didn't particularly like the main guy, such a weakling, always surrounded by women. My memory of it is very hazy though, I watched this when I was 14/15 and it took so much effort to find, only one store in the whole of Sydney still had a copy on VHS with vietdubbed.

The soundtrack was devine, I've always thought if they were to remake this...which I doubt they can, then who would I cast as the characters. I get the feeling to replicate the star studded cast, they will likely get Hu Ge as the lead guy, the one I didn't like.

Thanks for the youtube videos...now I feel like watching all these old shows again.

In keeping with the thread, say instead of remaking one that has already been made, how about stories that hasn't been made or very few versions off?

For myself, I would like Mythical Crane remake, I only know of the ATV 90s version and the movie version with Anita Mui, I would like a proper version and maybe tweaked a little so the main guy and girl is less annoying.

And also a proper remake of Wolong Sheng's novel, I don't know it's name. But there was a old Taiwan version, a China early 00's version as well. Neither one followed the novel or were very good.

for one that has not been made, to the best of my knowledge, Beautiful Whirlwind by Wolong Sheng. I've been wanting a drama of this every since I read the premises below.

Currently in love with Bae Suzy...for superficial reasons.
