Why didn't Jinyong give Xiao Long Nu a proper name? Or rather why did her Teacher Not giving her a proper name?
I kinda think that XLN is more like a "display name" , just like the Greats - East Heretic, North Begger Etc

The name would come from Xiaolongnu's teacher, and her teacher didn't care all that much about names to begin with. She was originally Lin Chaoying's servant girl and she only ever had a nickname to begin with. Nobody even knew what that was, so why would she care that much about giving Xiaolongnu a proper name.

Xiaolongnu is her real name for all intents and purposes. Her teacher and Yang Guo after they married did call her "Long'er" as a nickname. Also, it was considered a bit rude to refer to a woman by her given name, so it'd be rare for any one unrelated to press the issue.
