Default The King's Avatar 《全职高手》 - Yang Yang, Zhang Sophie

OMG OMG OMG, they're turning the Chinese Street Fighter into a live action TV series!

    http://www.dramapanda.com/2017/06/te...announces.html

The King's Avatar 全职高手, which is based on a novel by Butterfly Blue 蝴蝶蓝 has announced Yang Yang as the lead. It's a nod to Love O2O in a way given that the actor will be playing an expert gamer once more and guys, there is an animated adaptation of the novel floating around. And seriously, Yang Yang is the perfect choice in my mind for a live action anime.

    Synopsis: (MyDramaList)

In the multiplayer online game Glory, Ye Xiu, is well known as the Textbook level expert and a top-tier player. Due to a series of circumstances, he was forcefully expelled out of his professional team. After leaving the pro gaming scene, he resides at an Internet Caf employed as one of the managers. When Glory launches the tenth server, he throws himself into the game once more, equipped with ten years of gaming experience, memories of the past and an incomplete self-made weapon. His journey back to the top begins.

    • Native title:

      全职高手
    • Also Known as:

      Quan Zhi Gao Shou; 电视剧全职高手; Dian Shi Ju Quan Zhi Gao Shou;

    Cast:

Yang Yang as Ye Xiu (Ken)

Zhang Sophie as Su Mu Cheng (Eliza)

The anime version (Season 1) has already been out for some time, and the relevant discussion can be found here in the anime section:

What we know about TKA live action TV version so far:

    1. Dilmurat Dilraba was originally cast as the female protagonist opposite Yang Yang, but was replaced by Sophie Zhang.

    2. Drama will be 80 episodes long (probably the aired version, the uncut version will be much less)

    3. Filming will start at end of this Sep and expected to air in Spring 2018.

What the characters might look like in the live action version (official cosplay MV by Tencent):

THE BEGINNER'S GUIDE to THE KING'S AVATAR:
    ------------------------------------------------------------------

This is by far the most cleverly disguised spoof of another work in history, and the work being spoofed is the video game series Street Fighter. (There is nothing new under the sun. As far fetched as this may sound, even Jin Yong might have borrowed ideas from someone else's pre-existing work...)

Anyways, this is the preview of the TKA OVA that will release in China in 2018.05. We see right away, there is a character that looks like a Chinese version of Ryu. And Ken is in the video too (I'll explain this in a bit):

    1. HAN WENQING (Desert Dust) is the Chinese "Ryu" in TKA.

His online avatar is Desert Dust (reference to desert whirlwind spins [Huricane "Kick"] in games like Super Mario Bros 3)

But... wait a minute! Ryu is a Japanese fighter, he can't be the hero in a Chinese work.

True. Han Wenqing is actually the antagonist in TKA!

So, if Ryu is the bad guy, then that makes Ken the good guy! True.

But... wait a minute! A white guy (no offense intended) can't be the hero in a Chinese work.

True. That's why they made Ken an Asian character. And his name is Ye Xiu! (He's the one with black hair on the left facing Han Wenqing with dark brown hair on the right!)

    2. SU MUCHENG is the Chinese "Eliza Masters" (Ye Xiu's partner) in TKA

Every char has an SO. Ryu is a wandering loner looking for glory. Done. Easy to replicate in TKA.

Ken had Eliza. They mostly left her intact in TKA. That's why Su MuCheng is a Caucasian-looking character with blonde hair in TKA.

But... But... Eliza looks like such a soft mellow char in Street Fighter. Does she even fight?

    3. YE XIU'S EMBLEMS (he had two).

OK, so this Ye Xiu char actually had two online avatars (I'll get to this in a bit).

It just occurred to me that in almost every early Street Fighter game, Ken's American flag is always placed over Canada.

Remember, TKA is a spoof not an exact copy, which is why Ye Qiu's emblem is One Autumn Leaf (resembles Canadian flag).

USA, Canada, they're both neighboring countries in North America. Close enough!

(Lord Grim's emblem [Ye Xiu's 2nd online avatar])

(Ye Qiu's emblem [Ye Xiu's 1st online avatar])

Ye Qiu is the Canadian version of Ken...

(Say, "Hi", to Canada pair, eh?)

    4. YE XIU'S AVATARS are modeled after KEN from Street Fighter

When I was writing the 1st version of this guide, I wrote that Ye Qiu & Lord Grim (both are online avatars of Ye Xiu) were modeled after Ken (Lord Grim's red tails were inspired by Ken's red head band):

Ppl then said, "Nah, double red tails are common for Chinese manhua character."

    ... afterward, MY RESPONSE:

Very sweet pic of MC in The King's Avatar. But... the costume looks very Anglo-Saxon (compared to the pic of Nezha posted earlier).

BTW, here I found it, a very good pic showing Ye Qiu's back cape. With a tapered end, it looks exactly like Ken's bundle of hair. Ye Qiu is the Chinese interpretation of Ken. Japanese fight with bare fists. Chinese fight with weapons (Bruce Lee = nunchucks, Jet Li = belt, Jacky Chan = objects in environment...)

Remember, this is the same person with 2 costumes. One moment, he has a red long something at the back (his cape; like long human hair). The next moment he has two red tails. There is only one person in the world with a long bundle of something (his hair) AND two red tails... and that person is Ken from Street Fighter!

    5. HAN WENQING'S CHINESE STYLE "Red Hadoken" and "Dragon Punch":

    "Red Hadoken":

(It seems Han Wenqing's "Red Hadoken" looked more realistic coz 1. difficult to dodge AND 2. no dumb-looking squatting pose beforehand...)

    "Dragon Punch":

(Likewise, his "Dragon Punch" seems more practical coz he doesn't leap into the air during a fight like doing a volleyball spike...)

    6. TANG ROU (Soft Mist) is the CHINESE "Chun Li" (aka the Chinese "Wonder Woman"):

Tang Rou ("Chun Li") had other looks beside the "Qipao Fighter" (plus the Qipao design in Street Fighter looks so horrendous):

(The many different looks of Chun Li combined into one in the anime version of TKA.)

Looking kind of like Wonder Woman there:

    Plus, let's not forget:

"A pretty girl that isn't thick-headed, and has a competitive personality. She has a pair of hands that is as quick as Ye Xiu's and a high APM. To earn money for her family, she originally went overseas to learn piano, but because she failed in piano and also lost to Ye Xiu in Glory while at the Happy Net Cafe playing for Chen Guo, she started to play Glory. She has a violent fighting style, regarded by many professional gamers as the best offense player. She is also the tenth season's most sought-after rookie player." (MyAnimeList)

TKA drama starring Yang Yang was supposed to begin filming at the end of this month, but got delayed (by at least 2 months) coz of this:

    http://www.dramapanda.com/2017/09/ma...g-for-two.html

Martial Universe 武动乾坤 has announced that it will be reconvening at Xiang Shan this September. I thought that it would be for a press junket of some sort, but it just dawned on me that the drama hasn't even wrapped yet, which is highly unusual since dramas do not usually take a year to make (it began filming last November).

As reported on Sohu, Director Zhang Li talked about the delay in filming during an interview saying that Yang Yang had injured his ear, but still pushed through with filming until around June when the wound began festering really badly.

(P.S: It takes time to find the right images. But, eventually I will finish writing The Beginner's Guide to TKA [posts above]. Keep checking back for further updates...)
