The sun was already high when Je Jian opened his eyes. Upon sensing the eerie silence, he quickly jumped.

“Darn! I was tricked again!” he cursed.

“Huh? What did you say?” Wu Han opened his still heavy eyes and yawned.

“I can’t believe it!! Sheng Nan has drugged us to sleep! Darn, I shouldn’t let her prepare our breakfast!” Je Jian shook his head in disbelief.

“What did you say? Sheng Nan drugged us?” Fully woke up now, Wu Han looked around, and found three bodies scattered around, those of Goat Lan, Li Hoa and Jin Lam. “Why would she do that?”

“It is my fault. I should not mention that I’d bring her home. That naughty girl…” Je Jian groaned.

“I don’t get it. Why should she do that?” Wu Han asked.

“Because we would never let her out, that is!” Je Jian threw his arms in exasperation. “Ahhh… where could she be now? Although her poisoning skill is very good and her brain is very smart, still she knows no martial art at all! Knowing that all of us will look high and low for her, she could disguise herself in any face! How should we look for her then?”

“I still don’t get it,” Wu Han frowned, “Why wouldn’t you let her out?”

“This…” Je Jian went speechless. Then…

“This has nothing to do with you!” he muttered grumpily.

Wu Han’s frown became deeper. It seemed there were so many secret about Sheng Nan. Why would she, as a student of one of the greatest fighters, know no martial art at all? Then, why should her existence be kept secret?

“Wu Han, I think Sheng Nan’s drug will lose its effect in a few minutes. Please take care of yourself. I’ll go now to look for Sheng Nan,” Je Jian hurriedly made some traveling preparation.

“No! Brother Je Jian, I’ll go with you!” Goat Lan, already woke up, cried.

“Je Jian, don’t be ridiculous. All of us here have been helped by Sheng Nan. We all owe her. I suppose it will be much better if we look for her together. Anyway, five people are better than only one, right?” Wu Han answered patiently.

Je Jian shrugged his shoulder. He still cursed himself for being deceived that easily by her si-moay!!!

Days went by, and with every day that passed away, Li Siang became stronger. The man still took care of him, showing up every now and then and bringing her food and medicine. Yet, he seldom spoke a word towards her.

Today, like yesterday and the day before, the man showed up around midnight, his hands were clutching several bun.

    “You hungry already?” he asked.

Li Siang shook her head, “I still have plenty leftover. I’m just bored, cooped in this small, dark hut for several weeks,” she sighed.

“Such a demanding girl,” the man smirked. “Now, what do you want? You wanna go out already?”

Li Siang nodded. “Sir, thanks to the medicine that you brought for me, now I’m already strong and my head don’t spin as much. I think I can go out tomorrow. How about that?”

The man smiled, “Are you trying to compliment yourself? It’s obvious that you ordered me exactly what medicine should I buy, and how to cook them.” They both joined in laughter.

“Anyway,” The man added, “If you think you are healthy enough, who am I to complain? It’s actually a good news for me, as I should go back to my home soon.”

”Oh…” Suddenly, realizing that she would ‘lose’ this man soon, Li Siang’s heart felt heavy.

“Well, have a good sleep. I’ll be here in the morning,” the man said as he walked out of the hut’s door.

Li Siang nodded eagerly. She put her head on the pillow, trying to catch some sleep, so she’ll meet the man again soon.

The thought of being scolded by Andrea gave me shudder and I forced myself to write again...

    --
“Darn that girl! I swear, next time we meet her, I’ll chop down her ears and pull out her nails!” In a posh restaurant in Ching An, Wong Chin drank his wine sulkily.

“That girl is very tricky. And she knows the nature of our poisons well,” Hung Pei Pei contemplated. “Who is she?”

“Whoever she is, she’ll be dead next time I meet her,” Wong Chin grunted, emptying the whole bottle of wine in one gulp. “Could that be that the pretty girl is still alive?”

Hung Pei Pei shrugged, “It’s high time that it was also a trick that girl played on us. We’ll find out about that later,” Sipping her wine gracefully, Hung Pei Pei glared at Wong Chin, “Now, now, forget your anger for awhile and find me some pretty girl.”

Still sulking, Wong Chin got up and walked out. A few minutes later, he showed up again, this time pushing two crying girls towards Hung Pei Pei. She frowned.

“Can’t you find me better looking ones? They look so plain,” she scoffed.

“Sorry, but these are the two best looking ones around,” Wong Chin shrugged his shoulder. “Ah… if only we were not tricked by that little girl, you could use those girls. They are quite pretty, especially the girl that knows the map.”

Hung Pei Pei nodded, “Don’t worry, I’ll drink their blood sooner or later.”

With her piercing eyes, she was then inspecting the two crying girls, “Oh well, bad-looking is better than none. Bring them to my room,” she sighed.

As Wong Chin was pushing the girls to the back of the restaurant, suddenly one of them cried out loud, “Help!! Help us! We are the daughters of Master Liu! Help us!”

Hearing this, some customers of the restaurant stood up. Master Liu was such a great merchant in the city, and he would surely reward them handsomely should they help his daughters!

Seeing that, Wong Chin growled. With his one eye, he regarded the would-be helper, making them tremble. This guy did have power!

Feeling so helpless, the Liu girls cried louder. If only they knew that their fate will be this bad, they wouldn’t go to the market on this particular day!

“Red Spider Sect! Isn’t that enough for you to do your evilness in southern area? We in the northern area would not tolerate that!” A man around thirty suddenly walked in, frowning his thick brows. Although his robe was tattered, it was very clean.

“Hmph, does Kay-Pang (Beggar Clan) try to interfere with Red Spider Sect’s business?” Wong Chin growled.

“Red Spider, we respect you as one of the biggest clan in the south. But here, in north, we would not want your kind of evilness spread out. And if that means Kay Pang should interfere with your business, then be it!” The man answered firmly.

“Such a strong personality, and such an attractive man… Do tell me, what’s your rank in Kay Pang?” Interested with the new man, Hung Pei Pei walked approaching the man and asked with her shrilly voice.

The man frowned, “This creature should be Red Spider Sect’s leader, Hung Pei Pei. Hmmm… what plan does she have for northern area, as she herself going here?” he pondered. Yet, his face remained calm when he spoke, ““Who am I and what my rank in Kay Pang are not something I can be boast of. However, even the Kay Pang member with the most limited martial art will feel obliged to banish your evil deeds! Now, unhand the women now!”

Wong Chin smirked, “Then let me try Kay Pang’s Tah-kauw Pang Hoat (Dog Beating Stick Style) first!” As soon as the words left his mouth, Wong Chin drew his saber and began attacking the man.

Although he was not as well built as Wong Chin, the man’s lwee-kang was on par with Wong Chin’s. He managed to dodge Wong Chin’s saber and attacked him back with his stick.

“Nice style!” Wong Chin barked. He redrew his saber and spun it swiftly. The man didn’t lose composure upon seeing Wong Chin’s tight defense. He banged his stick to the floor, and suddenly his stick was swept upon Wong Chin’s feet.

Startled by the man’s move, Wong Chin quickly jumped up. Mid air, he saltoed and jumped back with his saber being slashed at the man’s neck. Sensing that his head was about to be chopped of, the man dodged. He even had the time to attack back by whipping his stick towards Wong Chin’s head.

Moves by moves went by fast. Hung Pei Pei frowned. The battle had taken too much time! Although sooner or later Wong Chin would be able to win this battle, the length of the battle gave time for other Kay Pang members to show up. After that, many interference from Kay Pang would hinder her quest on finding Thio Su-seng’s treasure! With that thought in mind, she suddenly catapulted and landed in front of Wong Chin, “Now let me handle this man!” she cried.

Not only her martial skill was much higher than that of the man, Hung Pei Pei was also still full of energy while the man has fought more than 400 styles. It was difficult for the man to defend himself, let alone to attack back! Sweat poured from his body. It seemed that soon he would be defeated! Still, the man remained calm. While he defended himself seriously, suddenly…

    “Fire!! Fire!!”

Out of the blue, the whole restaurant was filled with smoke. Guests and waiters ran amok frantically. Both Master Liu’s daughters used this opportunity to free themselves and joined the guest, running out for their lifes.

Hung Pei Pei stood still. She didn’t smell or see any fire!!!

“Does someone play a trick on me?” she silently pondered.

    Another installment, dedicated to Andrea:

    --

Today, Li Siang tried her best to look good. Not only she combed her hair more neatly than usual, she also pinched her cheeks several time to get a natural blush.

“You wake up already?” The man cautiously opened the hut’s door. Li Siang nodded, but she hurriedly shut her eyes, as the sun that penetrated from the door blinded her eyes.

“What happened with your eyes?” The man hurriedly came approaching her and checking her eyes. Slowly Li Siang opened her eyes.

“Uh… it’s nothing,” she murmured, “The sudden light blinded my eyes, as it’s been quite a long time I didn’t see any light. But I’m fine….. now….,” Li Siang found difficulties in finishing her sentence as she found how close the man’s face to her face was, and how good looking the man was.

He was not scholarly-looking like Kiau Leng Thian. In fact, with his stubbly beard, he looked a bit rough. He looked even rougher with a scar in his left cheek. Yet the beard and the scar couldn’t conceal the fact that he was a very handsome man. A very handsome young man.

“Why are you staring at me like that? Do I look funny?” The man frowned.

“Oh!!” Li Siang went speechless for a while, but she quickly continued, “I never thought you are this young! Why, you are even younger than I am!”

The man grinned. “Are we going to discuss about age, or are you ready to go out? Flowers are blooming out there…” he said with a twinkle in his eyes.

Li Siang blushed. “What’s wrong with me,” she silently scolded herself, “I thought you are a man-hater. And now you’re going ga-ga over a boy who’s younger than you are!”

Outside the hut, Li Siang could not contain her excitement upon seeing flowers that were blooming everywhere.

“It’s so pretty! Who can expect that in the bottom of Heartbroken cliff there is a beautiful valley like this one?” Li Siang exclaimed.

The man nodded, “Who knows, at the end of a brokenhearted story there may lies possibility for new romance blossomed,” he said meaningfully. Shyly Li Siang glanced at the man. The air seemed thicken…

“Do tell me, what is your name? I couldn’t believe that after all you did to me, I still do not know who you are,” hurriedly Li Siang changed the topic to break the electricity between them.

“Does that matter?” the man asked lazily. “You can call me A Sheng.”

“A Sheng,” Li Siang repeated. “And I am A Siang.”

“Nice to meet you, A Siang,” A Sheng grinned. ”Now that you are already healthy, I can leave you in peace now.”

“What? You are gonna leave me that soon?” Li Siang widened her eyes. A Sheng nodded.

“Good bye,” he murmured. Then with a lazy smile on his lips, he used his gin-kang and disappeared on the next second, leaving Li Siang standing still among the flowers….

    “Hurry! This way!!”

Beneath the thick smoke, the handsome beggar felt his hand being grabbed by a person that ushered him outside the restaurant. His savior then quickly led him towards a secluded small path at the back of the restaurant, where his savior sat down, huffing and puffing wearily.

With great interest, the beggar, whose name was Ma It Hong, regarded his savior. He was a skinny old man, whose head had turned bald and whose skin was full of freckles. From the way the old man walked, Ma It Hong could say that the old man knew no martial art at all. Yet he was very brave in interrupting Hung Pei Pei’s fight.

“Old man, many thanks for your help. I hope someday I will be able to repay your kindness,” Ma It Hong bowed respectfully.

The old man sat straight from his hunched position, “It’s nothing, it’s nothing. I would love to do anything than can piss than monster off,” he replied with a smile.

Ma It Hong couldn’t help to grin back. “Cianpwee, do you have any old grudge towards Hung Pei Pei and the Red Spider Sect?”

The old man only shrugged, “No, just pure contentment of seeing her angry face.”

His answer was so unpredictable that Ma It Hong chuckled.

“Ma Tiangloo!” Two members of Kay Pang suddenly appeared, looking shocked as their usually serious Ma Tiangloo could laugh that hard.

Despite his somewhat young age, Ma It Hong was already became one of the two elders of Kay Pang. Although he was much less senior that the other Kay Pang tiangloo, the Wind Beggar Pheng Lim, his serious and heroic nature made him well liked among Kay Pang’s member. Even Kay Pang’s pang-cu relied on him for Kay Pang internal management. It was even rumored that on this Kay Pang meeting, he would be promoted to be pang-cu, to replace the already ill and old Ciong pang-cu. Yet as he was very busy with Kay Pang internal management, he seldom wandered in the wu-lin world, thus made his name was not known outside Kay Pang.

“Brother Wan, Brother Wen, are you looking for me?” Ma It Hong asked. The older Kay Pang member nodded.

“Ma tiangloo, pang cu is looking for you at the headquarter,” Brother Wan said. “About the annual meeting, I think.”

“Ma Tiangloo, we heard that you clashed with Red Spider Sect. As soon as we heard the news, we went to the restaurant. But not only we couldn’t find you there, there wasn’t any trace of Red Spider Sect left!” Brother Wen hastily added.

“It’s true,” Ma It Hong nodded. “Red Spider Sect tried to implement their evil way here, in north, by kidnapping girls. I tried to stop them, but my skill is far from their leader, Hung Pei Pei. Fortunately, this cianpwee helped me.”

After hearing Ma tiangloo’s explanation, Brother Wen and Brother Wan bowed at the old man in respect.

“Oh…. So many formalities, so many formalities…” the old man frowned. He hurriedly got up and walked out.

“Cianpwee, where are you going?” Ma It Hong called out.

“Ha ha ha… Nosy young man, the world is so wide, why should you pay attention to where I go?”

Ma It Hong frowned. This grandpa had played trick on Hung Pei Pei. If he was found by Red Spider Sect, who could save his dear life?

“Cianpwee…” Ma It Hong blocked the old man’s way.

“Young man, what do you want? Leave me alone!” The old man cried. Suddenly, he took a bamboo cylinder from his pocket and threw it to the ground. Thick smoke billowed. Yet this time, Ma It Hong has prepared himself. Just as he heard silent footsteps on his right, he quickly reached out and caught the old man from escaping.

“Let me go! Let me go!” The old man struggled to get out of Ma It Hong’s embrace.

“Cianpwee, listen to me. I am very sorry, but I could not let you being exposed to danger after you have risked your life to save mine!” Ma It Hong explained.

The old man closed his ears with his hands, and kept on screaming, “I don’t want to hear you! Help! Help! Kidnapper!”

Afraid that the old man’s shout attracted many unnecessary attentions, especially that from Red Spider Sect members, Ma It Hong quickly pressed the old man’s moa-hiat and ah-hiat to stop him from screaming and running away.

“Cianpwee, I am really sorry. I can’t let you out and be killed by Red Spider Sect. Please be patient for a few days. After Red Spider Sect has been cleared from this region, I will set you free. In the mean time, please pardon me, but I’m afraid I have to do this,” With that saying, Ma It Hong shoved the old man into a huge sack.

“Let’s go to the headquarter,” he nodded to Brother Wen and Brother Wan.

“But… but…” Brother Wan stammered, pointing at the sack that contained the old man’s body. Kay Pang headquarter was not a public place. Only Kay Pang members and friends could visit it. And this old man was a stranger!!

Ma It Hong sighed. “This cianpwee is my savior. I could not let him die here. Besides he knows no martial art at all. Should pang cu would be displeased because of this, I’ll bear the responsibility.”

Inside the sack, beneath her disguise, Sheng Nan couldn’t stop grinning. While she saved this man only to annoy Hung Pei Pei, she was pleased after knowing that this man was a Kay Pang member. Yet she never thought that she could trick this man to bring her to Kay Pang headquarter!! Maybe there she could meet the mysterious Wind Beggar.

“Luckily I have one spare smoke bomb,” she thought. Her calculation was so precise. If she really wanted to escape from Ma It Hong, she surely wouldn’t reuse her previous trick, would she??

    ===

Introducing...... Lawrence Ng as Ma It Hong. I hope you like Sheng Nan here....
At first writing this part is difficult, as I kept on back to Li Siang story. But after a while, I really enjoy the 'unromantic' scene and Sheng Nan's craziness.
    What do u think?

Li Siang lost track on how long she had stood there, as if waiting for something. But the sun has already set when she finally pushed herself to walk back to the small hut she lived for the past weeks. Strangely, the hut seemed darker now, emptier.

“What’s wrong with me,” she moaned. “It’s obvious that he didn’t pay any attention to me. Why then I keep on thinking about him? And how can I feel so empty that it stabs my heart?”

Almost without thinking, she touched her cheek, and surprised to find her cheeks were wet. “Am I crying? Why should I cry for a man? When did I ever cry for a man before?”

“I will not cry over a man!!” Li Siang shouted out loud, as if by saying that aloud she could erase the fact that her heart was in pain.

“Then, don’t!” A tender voice suddenly echoed from her back. Hurriedly Li Siang turned her body, and…

“You… You are back!” she stuttered.

A Sheng smiled, “After ran for several li, I suddenly realize that your heart-injury is far more dangerous than your external injury. And since now your body has turned to normal, I certainly couldn’t let you climbed up this cliff and try to suicide again. And my thought is right, you are still crying over him…” his voice faded out.

Li Siang closed her eyes. She couldn’t believe that this man was actyally came back to save her again! More, he was stupid enough to think she was in love with another man. “Don’t you know that you are the only person that I ever love?” she screamed in her heart.

“Then what would you do to prevent me from trying to kill myself again?” she asked coyly.

“I’ll bring you to my home, to the snowy Heng Hai Mountain,” A Sheng replied firmly.

Ahhh.... identity of A Sheng has been revealed, rite?
