That night, Wu Han had a strange dream. He dreamt that he was chased by the one-legged Ciong Pangcu, who was ready to kill him with Hang Liong Yu Hui Style. He tried to fight back, but his hands could not be moved. As Ciong Pangcu’s palm almost stroked him, suddenly a figure appeared and blocked the style with her body.

“Sheng Nan!” Wu Han shouted. But too late, Ciong Pangcu’s strong palm had injured her. Sheng Nan let out a muffled cry, “Wu Han…”

Wu Han woke up in cold sweat, only to find that the person that called his name was Li Hoa, who was knocking on his door.

“Come on in,” Wu Han answered. His voice was still shaky. That was such a nightmare!

Li Hoa walked in, holding a big basin. Seeing Li Hoa had been ready in her pale pink dress, Wu Han’s face turned red.

“I.. ah.. I overslept,” he stuttered.

Seeing this, Li Hoa only laughed melodiously, “That’s allright. Come, wash your face with this water so we will be ready to attend Ciong Pangcu’s funeral ceremony,” she said, pointing at the basin.

Wu Han groaned, “Li Hoa, you don’t have to bring me wa…. What? Is today the ceremony? But… I thought they would wait until the Annual Meeting!”

“Seeing that the majority of the Kay-Pang members have gathered here, and the condition of Ciong Pangcu’s body, they decided to do the ceremony today,” Li Hoa answered gloomily.

“Aaah… the power of Hang Liong Sip Pat Ciang is so huge, it destroyed all internal organs of Ciong Pangcu. It might be a better idea to do the ceremony today,” Wu Han nodded. He quickly washed his face and readied himself.
“OK, I am ready! Now let’s go! I hope we will get lucky and meet Sheng Nan there,” With that saying, Wu Han opened the door.

Outside of the ceremony room, they met the old man that was in the sack.

“Cianpwee, good morning!” Wu Han called respectfully. Yet the old man didn’t say anything. He just stared at Wu Han with serious eyes.

“Such a strange old man,” Wu Han thought.

If only he knew who the man really was!

Even from outside of the ceremony room, Sheng Nan could hear all Kay Pang members cried vehemently. And although she could not see it from her seat outside, she could feel the suspicious glance that was directed to Ma It Hong. Yet he stood calmly next to Ciong Pangcu’s body, receiving the salutation from other sect, as if disregarding the suspicion towards him.

“Such a strong man!” Sheng Nan could not help but praised. Yet her mind didn’t stop working, “I couldn’t believe that Ciong Pangcu’s intermal organs have been decayed this fast! What is the reason behind today’s ceremony?”

As she pondered, from the corner of her eyes, she could see Wu Han and Li Hoa walked out of ceremony room and approaching her. She quickly busied herself with her tea.

“Cianpwee, good morning!” Wu Han called out.

“Cianpwee, may we sit here?” Li Hoa, smiling tenderly, pointed at two empty seats in Sheng Nan’s table. Idly, Sheng Nan nodded.

“Do tell us, cianpwee, are you also a guest here?” Wu Han tried to open a conversation.

Sheng Nan frowned, “I told everyone yesterday, I was being kidnapped!” she answered with her old man’s voice.

“Ah, you were kidnapped by Ma It Hong….” Li Hoa nodded.

Wu Han carefully studied this old man. As he was the only person that was inside that room, could that be that this old man was the killer?

Suddenly, an exclamation was heard from inside of the room.

    “What happened?” Sheng Nan asked.

Wu Han frowned, “I don’t know. Let me take a look!” he said as he went in to check.

Soon, Wu Han came back with tired smile in his face, “Nothing happened. Only one of Kay Pang members became hysterical and grabbed Ciong Pangcu’s corpse too tight. It took them quite a long time before they could calm the man’s down.”

Sheng Nan shifted a bit, so she could see what happened inside the chamber. The man surely caused lots of trouble, as now she saw that Ciong Pangcu’s corpse cover was being tidied by Brother Wen. The cover has been scrambled by the devoted member’s action, as now from her seat Sheng Nan could see Ciong Pangcu’s left foot. Dried blood smeared his ankle.

As if it was not enough, that man suddenly approached Ma It Hong. “Hmmm… you want to be a Pang-cu? Hmph!” With that saying, he spitted in front of Ma It Hong.

“Brother Ouw, please watch your manner!” From his place, Brother Wen hissed. Brother Ouw turned and sat with other three-sack members, all of them regarded Ma It Hong with steely eyes. Yet Sheng Nan could see that Ma It Hong remained calm. Only sad smile that lingered on his lips showed his true feeling.

Eh.... this part is a bit 'dry', isn't it? I don't have much time lately, so I didn't edit this part. But I hope this could appease your hunger and gives you more`clue.

    Any idea what's going on?

That night, Ma It Hong played his flute again in his terrace. Timidly, Sheng Nan approached him, “Hi, today is not a good day, isn’t it?”

Ma It Hong sighed, “Let’s say that I am glad today is over. But at least I know what will happen on the annual meeting. They will accuse me of killing Pang-cu! Ah…”

“Oh, don’t be so pessimistic! You still have two more days to prove your innocence!” Sheng Nan frowned.

“But what can I do? There seemed to be no way out of this case. It’s too complicated!” Ma It Hong threw his hands in exasperation. “And Brother Ouw, I never expected him to be so blatantly accusing me in front of other people. What would people from other sects think about Kay Pang after this? Old man, you are right. This whole trap was designed by someone who wants to destroy Kay Pang!”

“Of course I am right,” Sheng Nan replied flatly. “The problem is, which party? As I said before, there are lots of possibilities.”

“I don’t know,” Ma It Hong closed his eyes. “I began to think that it might be I that killed Pang-cu, because I didn’t see any other person could do that.”

“Or it might be me, you mean,” Sheng Nan smirked. “Come on, be constructive. Did you see anything suspicious about Ciong Pangcu yesterday?”

Ma It Hong thought hard, “He was very excited. But that might be because he was teaching me Hang Liong Sip Pat Ciang and Tah-kauw Pang-hoat!”

“Ah yes, speaking about that two style, since you have not mastered it yet, and since Ciong Pangcu has been killed, is that mean nobody could practice that style anymore?”

Ma It Hong exhaled, yet his face paled, “I don’t know…”

“By the way, why is the ceremony being held today instead of two days later as previously arranged?” Sheng Nan asked.

Ma It Hong shook his head, “I don’t know, it’s all Brother Wen’s idea. He said that it’s better for Pangcu’s corpse if he is buried soon.”

“And isn’t he the one that identify the style that killed Ciong Pangcu?” Sheng Nan raised her fake, white eyebrow.

Ma It Hong nodded, “Do you think Pang-cu was not killed by Hang Liong Sip Pat Ciang?”

    Sheng Nan raised her shoulders.

“But then, why would Brother Wen want to put the blame on me?”

“How is your relation with him, anyway?” Sheng Nan asked back.

“I always thought that he is my best friend. But now, I don’t know… We entered Kay Pang at almost the same time, so we have faced lots of difficulty together. It will be really hard for me if he is the one that set this trap,” Ma It Hong murmured.

“Ah…. You entered Kay Pang in the same time and you have been a Tiangloo and he’s still ordinary four-sack member? Interesting, eh?” Sheng Nan replied.

“But it’s not him that killed Ciong Pangcu. He was not in that room, remember?” Ma It Hong replied hotly.

Sheng Nan closed her eyes. Thinking hard, she tried to remember everything that happened that night. Was she sure that she didn’t hear anything? A faint rustling sound, maybe.

Suddenly something clicked in her mind. Everything that she knew fell into places.
Unable to contain her emotion, she clutched Ma It Hong’s hands, “Brother, I know what had happened that night!”

    --

Alors... do you, like Sheng Nan, knows what's going on that fateful night?

I have presented all the facts. It's time to let that grey cells working.. So, like Hercule Poirot, relax, sit back, close your eyes, and tell me who the murderer is.

I won't do any update until next week, and in the mean time, please tell me your thought about who the killer is!!!!!

Bwahahahaha... a small test for your grey cells!!!

Floo: Well, are you saying that there was dried blood smeared on his existing left foot, or do you mean there was no left foot but there was dried blood. Kinda makes a big difference.

Floo: Hmm, I think I almost got it but there are just a few things that can't be explained away.

Was there a window in the room the 'murder' took place in?

Was Brother Wan and the Wind Begger at the ceremony when the corpse cover got disturbed?

Are you sure that the Wind Beggar asked Brother Wan to help him with the body and not Brother Wen?

How thick was that simple blanket that covered the Beggar Leader during his conversation with Ma It Hong? Was his leg sticking out?

Am I asking too many questions?

I believe there is a small window here, but it's closed.

Was Brother Wan and the Wind Begger at the ceremony when the corpse cover got disturbed?
    Yes, of course!!!!!

Are you sure that the Wind Beggar asked Brother Wan to help him with the body and not Brother Wen?
Oh, I am not very sure about this...

How thick was that simple blanket that covered the Beggar Leader during his conversation with Ma It Hong? Was his leg sticking out?
It's a blanket exactly like one in your room (color, thickness...). And yes, his leg is sticking out since the blanket is rather small and yes, it looks fine (one cut one normal).

And your previous question? It's a cut leg with blood on the ankle.

Am I asking too many questions?
If now you can identify the murderer and save my neck, no. If you can't then yes.

Ma It Hong: Thanks for answering my questions. I'll try my best to prove your innocence but the only solution I can think of so far that would explain everything is too ridiculous to be true. So therefore it can't be, right?

I have a few more questions if you don't mind.

How big was that cupboard? Seems weird that there would be smeared blood on the inside, as if the body fell out of it. You'd think if the Leader wanted to kill himself, he wouldn't have to go inside the cupboard to do so. So much trouble to go through...

Try harder to remember if it was really brother Wan who helped carry the body away and not brother Wen! Your life may be at stake here. But come to think of it, those names are kinda confusing, aren't they. Are they twins or something? Maybe they're both in on it, haha! Just kidding.

Brother Wen must be such a smart person to be able to tell that 18 Dragon Slaying Palms did the old Leader in. Didn't you go up to the body as well? How closely did you examine it? Must have been pretty messy, with all that blood? Did you or anyone else get blood on their selves? Anyway, I'm pretty impressed by 18 Dragon Slaying Palms' power to decay internal organs. If it weren't for Brother Wen's insightful diagnosis, I'd have thought that time or poison would have been likelier culprits...

Did you notice if there was dried blood around the ankle of the dead body when you examined it by the cupboard? Of course, everything was probably so chaotic at the time (especially when they found Sheng Nan in the bag, jeez, I thought Wen and Wan saw you put her in the bag. Why were they so surprised to find her?) that you were too distracted to notice.

Too bad you had to break the door down. Where I come from, we have keys so we can unlock the door from the outside. Maybe if you had gone in quicker, you'd have caught the killer before he went out the window... But the window's pretty small for someone to squeeze out easily and without Sheng Nan hearing anything, even someone with such good Hing Gung as the Wind Beggar is too fat to pull that off...so nevermind. Sounds like a locked room with no escape to me. Which means the same number of people were always present in that room from the time you left to the time you returned.

Do you really think the Beggar Leader would kill himself? Was he so depressed by the loss of his leg? How different did he seem after that event? When was the last time you saw him before these recent events?

Ah, I'll shut up now. You have enough to think about without me bugging you. Hopefully you can answer at least some of these questions.

    Cool

I got a bit confusing with the name as well.

    But here is my theory.

Since the corpse showed the left foot; therefore, it might not be the real former beggar asso leader.

The cause of death is 18 dragon palms therefore aside from It Hong, the former (ciao guy) leader should be the prime suspect.

Motive: to make It Hong the leader and expand the glory of beggar clan and retire himself quietly...

Unwittingly caused trouble for It Hong in the process.

    Cool

On the other hand, the motive could be deeper than this. It could have something to do with the past.

One question: did the wind beggar know 18 dragon palms?

I also have some theories, but I don't want to say until it's explained every little detail, and so far it hasn't yet.

    Some comments:

quote:

Originally posted by Goofy:

Yes, it's a given that whoever the corpse is, it is not the same 'Beggar Leader'. But who is he then? And wheres the real body?

quote:

The cause of death is 18 dragon palms therefore aside from It Hong, the former (ciao guy) leader should be the prime suspect.

Well, we only have Brother Wen's word about that. I don't trust him... And even if it was, whose to say someone else might not have learned it. It was only through popular belief that only the Beggar Leader knew it.

quote:

Motive: to make It Hong the leader and expand the glory of beggar clan and retire himself quietly...

I question this motive because there are far easier ways to achieve that goal. Such as telling Ma It Hong he will be the next leader and retiring/dying quietly. Which was pretty much what was happening anyway. Going out in a puddle of blood neither promotes the glory of the Beggar Clan nor is it a quiet way to make an exit!

But since wind beggar was also there, should it not be accepted universally of the cause of death? At least, the wind beggar should smell a rat.

I am quite sure that the cause could be 18 dragon palms or pretty good imitation and brother wen(?) told the truth.

However, if the former leader was the murderer, did this mean that the wind beggar was also his accomplice?

    possible suspects
    1. the former leader
    2. brother wen
    3. brother wan
    4. wind beggar
    5. Ma it hong.

1 is my first prime suspect, and 4 is the secone suspect.

Why? The only things I accept as fact is that the same # of ppl were in that room from the time Ma It Hong left to the time he returned. And that the corpse at the ceremony was not the same corpse as the one in the room (and even this is unclear to me until Ma It Hong comes back with an answer to my last line of questioning ).

As far as smelling is concerned, usually people are immune to their own stink...

That's certainly a possibility. But for me, theres not enough to indicate that it was. And if it really was...well, that brings up a bunch of other questions...

The murderer of who? Himself? An imposter? The corpse under the cover? Whats his motive for everything?

    Now you make me confuse.....

OK, the guy that told that the murderer used 18 Palms and the guy that tidied Ciong Pangcu`s cover was the same guy, and he was the one that It Hong felt close to, whether it was Wen or Wen (but I believe it was Bro. Wen).

Ciong Pangcu`s left foot has been amputated long time ago, and at the funeral Sheng Nan only saw the amputated left foot, not the normal left foot (I hope I make myself clear), so, in Ma It Hong point of view, there is nothing wrong with the foot / feet.

Let`s ask Wind Beggar whether he knew 18 Palm or not....
    Wind Beggar:
Oh, he refused to answer... But...

Wind Beggar: Yeah; it`s Hang Liong Yu Hui!!! I am pretty sure about that style. And it didn`t make the internal organ decayed, it simply destroyed it!!! Is that Floo girl mixed that up? Poor girl, she can only communicate in French....

Again, this is my first attempt to make a detective story; sorry if I miss some details. But yet, you can not expect to get ALL the details...
And oh, my internet connection is stop working since Friday (Im in a public place now), so I will update as soon as the IP works, OK? Sorry for the inconvenience...

I do not want to solve the mystery of who killed Ciong pangcu. I just want to make everybody confused

Flo.., any chance that you could have drawn your mystery from Jin Yong's Lin Sing Kuet (Linked Cities) story? In that story, Man Jun San was conversing by himself in his room, but he made it sounded like there were two people talking inside the room. Man Jun San made it sounded like he was talking to Tsik Cheung Fat, while in the reality Tsik Cheung Fat was already killed by him (or so he thought). Man Jun San spoke in different voices to make the listeners outside the room thinking that he was arguing with Tsik Cheung Fat.

Now, could it be that Ciong pangcu had been dead inside the cupboard all along, and when Ma It Hong came in the room to receive Hang Liong Sip Pat Ciang and Tah Kau Pang Hoat he was actually pretending to be talking to Ciong pangcu? I mean, okay, the story you wrote described that two people (Ciong pangcu and Ma It Hong) were inside the room, but Sheng Nan was inside the sack so she could not really verify whether there were actually two people talking in the room or not. If Ma It Hong already knew Hang Liong Sip Pat Ciang and Tah Kau Pang Hoat and he could talk in different voices, it was simple for him to recite the the theory and pretend that he was talking to Ciong pangcu. Bringing Sheng Nan in the sack would be his alibi then, because Sheng Nan could probably help him clear his name if Sheng Nan was tricked into believing that Ciong pangcu was just giving him the gongfu theory so he could not possibly master it yet.

But as to what was the motive, why would Ma It Hong do something so risky that would most likely make people become suspicious of him, how could he figure out that Ciong pangcu would call him, and how could he figure out he would meet Sheng Nan and bring her to the headquarters, I do not know. As I mentioned above, I do not want to solve the mystery. I merely want to make everybody confused.

Rabadi: I have also thought of that exact same scenario as that is the only way that Ma It Hong could have done it. Since Sheng Nan was in the bag, Ma It Hong could have easily staged the whole conversation between him and the 'Beggar Leader'.

But since Floo didn't describe the scene from Sheng Nan's point of view, and even went so far as to give detailed descriptions - skinny beggar leader covered in a blanket, taking out the dog-beating stick, etc., I have to take her word that all those things happened.

Ohh..ho, I thought that Sheng Nan saw the "left foot" of the victim, thus it couldn't be Ciong Pancu. My theory was that Ciong Pangcu killed the victim, and with the help of Sheng Nan disguised the victim as himself.
But since Floo clarified that the "left foot" that Sheng Nan saw was actually the AMPUTATED one, so got to rethink again.

Another scenario, could it be that everything that happened was just an act by the top leaders of the Beggar Clan (Ciong pangcu himself, the Wind Beggar, Ma It Hong, Brother Wan, Brother Wen, and Brother Ouw) to pretend that the leader just passed away? The purpose was probably to trick the clan enemies such as the Red Spider Sect into believing that the Beggar Clan was currently in chaos so that the Beggar Clan could plan the striking back at the Red Spider Sect or any other enemies without giving them warning first? Just a thought.

TigerWong: you're right. Because we cannot take the story from Sheng Nan's perspective, we have to take it that everything did happen in the room. That was why I wrote above that I did not solve the mystery, I just thought it would be a bit fun to make everybody confused

I'm thinking about the possibility that Ciong Pangcu killed himself. Kind of...post power syndrome after he became crippled. What about that?

Oh, like he was so depressed about losing his leg he just couldn't take it anymore? So he decided to hand over leadership to Ma It Hong and ended it. Yeah..it could have taken years for the depression to sink in. Kinda cowardly though.

Why did he need to open the cupboard to kill himself? Seem a bit unnecessary to me.

And if the corpse under the sheet just had it's leg cut off to disguise it as the Leader, than it would seem like theres more to it.
