Default Would there be any serious continuity impediments to a JY/GL universe crossover?

The biggest impediment (and it is insurmountable) to a Jin Yong/Gu Long wuxia universe crossover is that Gu Long has been dead for over thirty years. In terms of the mythos and continuity of both universes, however, if they were to do a DC/Marvel style team up (like in the comics; it's probably never going to happen in the movies), are there any real impediments? I feel that Gu Long's predominantly Ming Dynasty-based stories (e.g. LUK SIU FUNG, DAGGER LEE, CHOR LAU HEUNG, etc.) can coexist with Jin Yong's canon. For example, the Ngor Mei Sect was founded by Gwok Seung in the Jin Yong universe, but nothing (other than copyright) really precludes her from also being its founder in the Gu Long universe. We already had Luk Siu Fung encounter the Cheun Jen Sect's 7 Stars Big Dipper Formation in the third novel of his series (BEFORE AND AFTER THE DUEL), and we all know of the Cheun Jen Sect's prominent role in Jin Yong's CONDOR HEROES TRILOGY.

It's an interesting thought exercise, at least. Imagine LSF comparing his Ling Sai Finger Technique to the Deun Family's 1 Yeung Finger Technique.

I think the inclusion of Shaolin/Wudang, though mainly Shaolin, ruins a lot of the stories being able to co-exist.

Like XAJH, Ode To Gallantry, and even to an extant LOCH/ROCH, it can be imagined that it was only a part of wulin was being talked about and there are still endless amount of heroes and characters that they just haven't encountered and the storyline didn't involve in that place and time.

Once you include Shaolin though with it's thousands of disciples and general fame and importance everywhere, if there's a big bad or a hero that can cause trouble, then you are the center of wulin and would be known by all.

Not sure if it was in the book or something that TVB had added in, but DGKB was mentioned in the 1984 New Adventures of Chor Lau-heung.

CLH found his sword and from memory said he had lived 100 years ago.

This would throw out the timeline of DGKB's appearance before LOCH.

Yeah...it would need to be a minimum of 400 years ago to work.

to answer the original question posed: the fight scenes would be really weird. :P

meshing the historical periods would not be as problematic as trying to write character interactions. JY characters are more realistic whereas GL's are more prototypes/stereotypes. and whose philosophy of life, the universe, and everything do you use?

I think there can be a compromise between the two styles. It would be interesting if Sai Mun Chui Sheut were to hear stories about Dook Goo Kau Bai, and then seek out Fung Ching Yeung for a duel.

actually, sai mun wouldn't be interested--he's never sought out another to fight duels. if anything, it'd probably be yin 13 who would want to challenge the great swordsmen in the JY verse.

With the exception of perhaps Yip Goo Sing, Sai Mun Chui Sheut sought out each of his opponents in the LUK SIU FUNG saga. None of them came to 10,000 Plum Blossoms Manor demanding a match with him, after all.

I'd like to see dagger Lee vs DFBB. Could the dagger catch DFBB, or will his speed be too fast?

that's not technically why he ends up duelling people. his intent is to kill them for moral transgressions; his victims just have a tendency of wanting to fight for their lives and end up losing. not quite the same thing as Y13 seeking out 3rd master to see who's the better swordsman. and it most certainly was yip good sing doing the challenging; SMCS would've been fine staying home.

I'm not so sure about that. Soo Siu Ying, the Ngor Mei Sect acolyte whom SMCS killed at the Pearl and Jade Pavilion, was an upstanding individual with no moral crimes on his record of which we are aware, but SMCS was curious about his Ngor Mei Sect sword technique and challenged Soo (though, full disclosure, SMCS did give Soo a chance to back out after he found that Soo's technique was not up to scratch). In the HAUNTED VALLEY storyline, SMCS agreed to go along with LSF's charade partly because after killing YGS, SMCS was really curious if anybody remained who could challenge him.

I do believe that SMCS is intrigued by formidable opponents whom he believes can offer him a challenge.

it's been a while since i've read the books, so i'll have to look that scene up. you're right: he's not immune to the challenge posed by a formidable opponent. he's got a tremendous ego. but it's not glory and fame that he's after, which is why him duelling doesn't have the same connotations.

You would need some serious normalization of MA levels. SWORD GOD Zhuo Bufan in GL universe would be able to do stuff like this.
