Default Great Teacher or Great+ Manual?

Do you think it is better to be under the tutelage of a Great LV teacher, or to come across a Beyond Great LV skill that you have to figure out yourself?

Logically, one would think the first is much better, but it seems that Jinyong characters of the latter almost always turn out to be much stronger.

Looked how strong the wudang swordmens were despite having learnt from Z3F for decades. ZZR with few months of 9YZJ were almost on their LV.

Looked how strong Wu brothers and Guo Fu turned out post 16 years. By then, they have been training under GJ for 30+ years and still sucks. Okay, assuming that they are THAT dumb. What about Yelu Qi? He was about on par with YG early on and also talented, still can't beat Huo Du despite learning XL18Z from GJ for 20 years? Really?

If YG had stayed by GJ side on Taohua island, he may turned out to be Yelu Qi LV.

If you consider guys like Yideng disciples, who have the chance to train under a Great LV teacher for decades... shouldn't they be much stronger than they are?

Instead, the above would get thrash by people who come across a Great+ LV manual, like Duan Yu, You Tanzhi, ZWJ, etc...

It seems that diligently training hard for years (脚踏实地) under a Great LV teacher is pretty useless. You won't even attain 20% of your teacher LV. Better to strive it out on your own.

How about ZBT should we consider WCY as his "master"😕😕😕😕

I'd actually think the beyond great skill would be the logical better pick. I think with the students, unless they have the "surpass their master" shtick, always only get like 70% (random percentage) of their master's peak. Whereas mastering 100% of the manual (or even 70%) of the manual should get you farther than the 70% of the former.

Well HD was also training under a Great so that makes since to me. YG != HD in terms of talent anyways, by the time YG meets YLQ, YLQ was already a student of ZBT.

The talent of the student is important too. Everyone you listed were pretty mediocre IMO. LHC learning under FQY gave him a catastraphic boost.

Actually, the best formula seems to be for a Great to give you a little bit of guidance early on (not years and years of extensive training, but just some guidance) so later on, when you encounter the uber-manual/item, you have some idea of what to do with it.

Very interesting point. I think it's more of a case of being protagonists. LHC trained under a Great and he achieved near Great status essentially overnight. He didn't have any secret manuals. LPZ and YBQ, OTOH, did get their hands on the best manual of the time but were still no match for him. GJ did train under a Great and even though 9Yin helped, he got most of his ability from HQG.

So, if you're a main character, you're destined to be a Great, no matter what path you take. If you're not a main character, unless you're already a Great by the time the story starts, you're SOL. You can be as smart as Yang Kang, Ye LuQi, Song Qingshu and you still won't amount to anything worth talking about.

I think LHC case is more of getting Great+ Art with guidance from possibly a Great/Great+ Teacher. In other words, the best of both worlds.

For GJ, he did became much better after training under H7G, but definitely nowhere near Great. Remember that even after learning all 18 stance of XL18Z, he was still barely on par with Ouyang Ke. If he continued practicing those XL18Z for the next 30 years, he would most likely remain Yelu Qi standard for the rest of his life. He only really ascend into the elite status after figuring out 9Yin (again, Great+ Art), and became Sub-Great LV after 1year+ of training in 9Yin.

Not true since Shi Huolong with only 12 of 18 stance and without QZ inner power or under Greats guidance can "injured" CK and I don't think YLQ strong enough to injured CK even after he learn 18 Dragon Palm/DBS 😕😕😕😕
So GJ at least in QCJ/The A Trio IMHO
