Default How good a fighter is Ding Chun Chou without his poison and dirty tricks?

Probably more than any other fighter, Ding Chun Chou was reliant upon poisons and dirty tricks to win his fights. Let's say we take away his poisons, his weapons, his followers, and his Fa Gung Dai Fat. If Ding Chun Chou had to just rely on good old fashioned fists and kicks kung fu, how good would he actually be?

Good enough to impress the people at Shaolin, and to last a while with Xu Zhu.

Without pulling anything from his bag of tricks? Just straightforward, no frills kung fu?

Yup. Xu Zhu was already immune to his poison after the transfer Wu Yazi, much less after the two elders as well.

When he was fighting Xu Zhu, he did not dare to use poison for fear that it would be re-directed back at himself. He was just using plain Xiao Yao palms which the onlookers found very impressive.

    I haven't read third edition
but in his fight with Xu Zhu, XZ was afraid to touch him and wasn't aware he was immune to the poison

he wasn't below DYQ and when JMZ encountered DY's 6MDS at four dragom temple, he though DY's inner power was not below DCQ, but at that time, DY was still not using his full inner power.
    see wuxiapedia for the comparison.

Woa.. I thought JMZ only commented on how DY's BMSG resembles that of DCQ's XXDF, and how disgraceful it is to have him as a disciple. I doubt they ever met let along faught. DCQ hardly come to mainland.

He use his "poison skill" (which kill Xuannan) but still couldn't beat MRF so he still quite formidable even without his "poisoned skill"..

Default Ding Chun Qiu-how good was he and why was he so good at poison?

Now, we knew he was from Xiao Yao Pai and every single Xiao Yao disciple was crazy good (other than Su xinghe). But he didn't particularly had a good showing in fights.

Also, why was he so good at poison? I don't recall Xiao Yao Pai being a sect that dealt heavily with poisons.

Xiao Yao Pai had just about every book/manual under the sun and Wuyazi was skilled in everything from sculpting to astronomy to gardening to chess. Not too surprising if DCQ learnt some stuff secretly from the stack of manuals.

The Life Death Talisman worked similarly to a potent poison as well.
