When we think of the greatest wuxia fights, we tend to focus on battles between the most powerful characters in the story. In LOCH, however, one of the most memorable fights occurred between a mid-level fighter and a handful of relatively low-level fighters: Yau Chui Gei vs. the Gong Nam 7 Freaks. The first time I saw this fight in LOCH '82, I was astonished by it (probably doesn't look astonishing to 2020 viewers, but for 1982, it was fantastic). My dad, who read the novel, said that for him, this was also one of the most memorable fights not only in LOCH, but in the entire Jin Yong canon.
...and to think, Yau Chui Gei and the Gong Nam 7 Freaks were relatively weak fighters in the story. Soon after their epic struggle, we'd meet Mui Chiu Fung and Chan Yeun Fung, who were clearly a step up from both Yau and the Freaks. But then, we'd learn that Mui was nothing compared to her teacher and the other Greats. It just kept escalating.
