Default Best Fist Style Martial Arts in Jin Yong Universe

    Hi All,

So we know that palm style has been the most dominant and popular in Jinyong novels. However, when it comes to Fists style, which martial arts would come out on the top.

From memory, I only know vacant fists, 7 injure fists and shaolin lohong fists.

Are there any others that will come out on top? What would be the TOP 5?

Seventy-two Styles Vacant Fist, it can even rival 18 Dragon Palm. JY really liked his numbers.

The problem is that not one of the big name villians or heroes use a Fist style as one of their main kung-fus, so it gets overlooked.

Some often overlooked ones used once or twice by more significant characters would be :

Great Demon Subduing Fist : (part of 9 Yin)

Warrior Attendant Air Splitting Fist: (Xuanci used it on Xiao Feng, not sure if still in 3rd Edition)

Great Warrior Attendant Fist : Created by 6 11th generation Shaolin monks after 36 years of research. One of the 72 arts. Not sure if the above Xuanci used was part of the moveset.

Shadowless Divine Fist : Used by Ding Dian. (Nice name!)

Thunderbolt Fist : ChengKun's fist style.

Now that I think of it, in all of the adaptations, I don't recall Taiji QUAN ever being used to punch, its always some backpalm or push or shove etc etc. Did I miss anything?

Tai Chi Fist seems to involve actual fists the way that 6 Mak Divine Swords involves actual swords.

I've done a little Taijiquan (Chen and Wu styles), but it wasn't really my cup of tea. Taiji does have fists (e.g. Ban Lan Chui), but it tends to favour the open palm. The usual reason given is that fists tend to encourage tension compared to the open palm (or more esoterically, it stagnates the flow of qi). More pragmatically, I think the real reason is that most practical Taiji applications tend towards grappling and throwing (there are countless Youtube videos of Taiji applications) rather than just hitting the opponent. Films and shows tend to portray Taijiquan as primarily a striking art instead.

Pretty much all Chinese martial arts in real life end with 'quan', regardless of their favoured hand formations. Baguazhang and Piguazhang are the main exceptions I can think of, but even then, I have heard these being called 'Baguaquan' and 'Piguaquan'.
