Why couldn't both views be true at once, as they don't really conflict? WCY was a upstanding man when it came to the big picture, but dropped the ball when it came to personal relationships. His behaviour after LCY's death (for which there is physical evidence) shows signs of a large ego and pettiness - in that sense, he was no different from the other greats and LCY.
