Meanwhile, the bridal chamber was whirled with activities. The matchmaker and young maids were busy putting the last touch of make-up on the bride’s face. When the work was done, they stood, gaping at the most beautiful sight in front. Li Yu Mei was transformed from a mere beautiful woman into a gorgeous goddess. She was very stunning in red silk bridal gown. Her lips were like ripen cherries with white-pearl teeth in neat rows. Her eyes were dark, lovely brown, and they looked so demurred that no one could help following her wish.

Li Yu Mei’s personal maid came in the room with a bowl of swallow’s net soup. She ordered the company to leave the bride in peace for the last minutes. Still binding in the young bride’s striking look, the servants obediently departed the bedroom.

The young bride expression changed the minute the door was closed. From an angel, she became a dazzling devil in human disguise. Her smile was ruthless, and her eyes knew no mercy. Even her maid gasped with fear at this sudden transformation.

Without delay, Mistress Li went over to the huge chest that held Ah Lan in captive. She opened the lid to inspect her prisoner and smiled satisfactorily. “Hmm, the sleeping draught I gave her last night worked well. We will have no problem dressing her up. Quick, come and help me with this girl.” She snapped at her maid.

Startled, the maid went to assist her young miss. Soon, both women finished dressing up Ah Lan in bridal gown. Li Yu Mei now was clad in plain black fitted-suit. She nodded at her maid and leaped out of the room through a window that opened to the backyard. The maid took the last look at the fake bride and arranged a thick veil opened the unconscious Ah Lan. Then she opened the door and called out to the matchmaker, “The bride is ready. Please come in and help her to the ceremony.”

Amid the merriment in Cheung Mansion, Lau Hong quietly left the main hall. Absentmindedly, he ventured into the backyard. He had been confused from the event of last night and was deep in thought when he caught a glimpse of a person in black speeding by. With quick reflect, he chased after the mysterious figure carefully. ‘I have got you this time.’ He thought.

To his surprise, that figure stopped in front an old shack. There, the fellow unlocked its door and stepped lively inside. Without delay, Lau Hong followed cautiously. Inside, he saw another door opened, leading into the secret chamber. Slowly, he moved stealthily through the door with more and more curiosity.

At the outer secret chamber, he could see his target’s shadow flickered in the dim candlelight. That figure was engrossed in copying something from the wall and seemed oblivious to the surroundings. Suddenly, Lau Hong smelled the rotten flesh of lying corpses. He peered down at the ground and perceived the horrific sight. Involuntarily, he cried out in horror. The noise brought the dark shadow into his attention. Without a word, the mysterious figure blew out the candle, making the whole chamber pitch dark, and flew toward the source of crying.

Panicked, Lau Hong sprinted toward the opening door that showed a small ray of light, which came through the crack of the shack wall. He was fast, but his pursuer was faster. Just before he could leave the shack, a palm came down on his back with strong force that he toppled down on the ground, spurting blood from his mouth.

The figure in black was about to strike again at Lau Hong, but was distracted by the shouting from outside, “Kidnapper! Intruder! Everyone surrounds the house. Don’t let anyone leave.” Frowning annoyingly, Li Yu Mei left the premise with great speeds. Realising that she would not be able to leave the house once it had been surrounded by high skilled martial guests, she jumped over the high walls of Cheung House to join her maid at the outskirts of the nearby forest.

At that moment, Dr. Ma and his wife ran into the scene. They had been disappointed at not finding any suitable candidates and were about to leave the wedding. However, the ceremony was about to start, so they were obliged to sit throughout the event.

When the bride in red gown and silken veil was led into the main hall to the eagerly waited groom, a man with scarred face appeared from nowhere and snatched the bride away from the stunning audience. Before anyone could recover from shocks, the kidnapper had already disappeared with his prize. From then, the chaos reigned. Master Cheung quickly ordered his disciples to close all exits and surround the whole area. Everyone was running back and forth, shouting orders and following orders.

Dr. Ma himself caught sight of the scar-faced man and thought that he was a good material to be his apprentice, so he started giving chase. Mrs. Ma was not to be defeated, so both followed the intruder into the back part of the house.

In the next moment, Dr. Ma stumbled over the senseless body of Lau Hong. He looked down at the youth’s head and forgot all about the chasing. He shouted excitedly and lifted the young man up. Mrs. Ma also grabbed at Lau Hong at the same time. Dr. Ma glowered at his wife, “Old Crone, he is mine. I found him first. You go after the other guy. This youngster is my APPRENTICE!”

Mrs. Ma kept her ground. “Who would want that ugly student? This one looks more handsome and smarter. I came across him at the same time as you did. So he is mine too.”

Her husband shouted in frustration, “All right, all right. We will talk about that later. He was injured, so if you don’t want to lose us a good apprentice, help me to get him out of here.”

The couple carried their new apprentice over the wall and travelled quickly back to their cottage.

As soon as they reach their cottage, the Weird couple gently laid the injured Lau Hong in the guest room in their cottage.

"Aye! Old woman! Go get his herbal medicine ready!," commanded Doctor Ma.

"No! What if you take him away and make him your student?!"said Mrs. Ma pointing her finger at her husband.

"Hiya, Old woman, what are you pointing and poking about? This young man is obviously internally injured. I will heal him and you get his herbal medicine ready."

Mrs. Ma looks at him suspiciously.

"What? What? You don't believe me? Our future heir to our medical knowledge and ability is going to die and your standing their arguing me? What's important now is to heal him, so he lives the day to use what we teach him! Old woman! Go now!"

"You don't need to say all that! I know how to take care of MY future student! hmph!"

Dr. Ma gently raise Lau Hong upright and began using his internal energy to heal his future student. Mrs. Ma who still doubting her husband, slowly walked out of the room and turned around once more to see if Dr. Ma was lying but when she saw that he started using his internal energy to heal her future student, she quickly hurried to the medicine room where all the herbal medicine was stored.

Doctor Ma slowly opened his eyes and seeing that his wife was out of sight. He gently laid Lau Hong down and walk swiftly to the door and locked Lau Hong and him in the room.

"haha haha! I will cure this young man and he will be my student and mine only! ha ha ha...once she finds that the door is lock she will be so upset because I will be first to have a student and even if she gets a student, her student will have to call my student suhing! hahaha!"

With saying that, he raised Lau Hong upright again and sat down behind him and began using his internal energy to heal Lau Hong. After couple hours, of healing Lau Hong with his internal energy, Dr. Ma was tired and laid Lau Hong down to rest. Just as Mrs. Ma was done preparing the herbal medicine and poured it in a bowl.

"Hahaha! I will cure my student for sure!"

To her disappointment, the door to the guest room was locked. "Aye! Old man! You cheater! You dare lock the room!"

"Hahaha! If I didn't you would have stolen my student from under my hand!"

"Your student? Who said he was your student?! Old man?!"

"Hmmm...I wonder if he has two swirls on his head or one swirl? Let see?"

Dr. Ma loosen Lau Hong's hair and tried to see if his head had two or one swirl, which determined if he is smart or not.

"Ah ha! Old woman! I tell you of some good news! My student has two swirls just like me! Student is like his teacher, very smart!"

Mrs. Ma was so upset, she would have jumped up and down if not for the bowl of herbal medicine, she had work so hard to prepare. Yet Doctor Ma was not making her temper any better by teasing her and knocking on the door, only making Mrs. Ma even more ticked.

As Lau Hong slowly regained his conciousness, he remembered that he was running after a figure clad in black. Yet when he finally regained his conciousness, he heard two old voices fighting over who will become his sifu with that which made him wish to go unconcious again because the constant arguing was giving him a headache.

Finally, he could not stand the constant jabber, he sat up very quickly which was not a smart move on his part. Doctor Ma may have kept him alive but the pain from his injury was still felt. Doctor Ma seeing that his student was in pain, came rushing towards the bed and sat down beside Lau Hong.

"Ah! My good student, you've awaken many hours before I've predicted. That proves that you are quite suitable to be my student!" said Doctor Ma cheerfully.

"Your student? But I already have a sifu? Why do I want to be your student?" said the confused Lau Hong.

"Old man, hahaha you think you can keep me from coming in huh? Just watch me come in now?"

Without looking at the door, he replied,"Just how do you think you're going to get in when the door is locked from the inside huh? Old woman? hahahha"

Suddenly, an ax slammed into the wooden door, breaking the wooden door, enabling Mrs. Ma to enter the room.

Doctor Ma stood up and quickly blocked Mrs. Ma from reaching Lau Hong. "Hey that's cheating! Old woman!"

"Who you calling a cheater?! You are the one who didn't want me to become his sifu and locked the room so you can have the new student all to yourself!"

"Hey! You two...would you mind telling me where I am and who you are?" asked Lau Hong.
The arguing stopped as the couple turned around to face Lau Hong.

"My name is Ma Chung Hao. But people call me,Weird Doctor Ma"

"Hmmm...I think my sifu might have mention you once or twice," said Lau Hong as he nodded his head in recognition.

"Ahem! Old man are you going to intruduce me to my student?"

"Hiya, slow down I was just getting to that," he paused and thought for awhile.

"Aye Old man don't you pretend like you don't remember my name?!"

"This is my wife, Su Lan"

"Hello Ma tai tai, did you two save me?"

"Yes!" said the Weird Ma couple in unison.

"Step aside while I give my student his bowl of medicine before it simmers and gets cold,"said Mrs. Ma demandingly. For the well being of his new student, he had went and sat down by the table.

"Here drink this herbal medicine up and have a little rest". Lau Hong reluctantly drank the bitter tasting herbal medicine and ask the couple some questions again. However, Doctor Ma was faster in asking him questions, infact Doctor Ma had asked him so many questions he was unable to answer them all at once.

"Hey little student! What's your name? Who would you want to be your teacher me or that old woman hovering by your bedside? Who is your sifu that told you about us?"

"Aye! old man! He just woke up, don't bagger him with so many questions!" scolded Mrs. Ma.

"Wo de mingzi shi(My name is) Lau Hong and my sifu name is Fong Zheng".

"So your sifu is Fong Cheung Meun of Qing Tong Sect,"said Mrs. Ma.

"Hey Lau Hong, who would you like as your teacher me or Mrs. Ma?"asked Doctor Ma again.

"Ma Cheen Pui, I already have a sifu and do not need another?"Both of them was shocked by Lau Hong's response and thought he just didn't want to say it in front of both of them and decided to get rid of the other so that the latter can ask Lau Hong's honest answer again. But Lau Hong's next question, gave them a better idea.

"Doctor Ma and Ma tai tai,my sifu must be worried about me? Can you please go back to the Sword Lake Sect and tell my sifu where I am please?"

    "Hmmm...No!"said Doctor Ma.

    "Why not?"asked Lau Hong.

Mrs. Ma looked at Doctor Ma and immediately understood what he was thinking and nodded in agreement.

"We will not give go back to the Cheung Manor until you pick one of the two of us to be your teacher, how about it?" said Doctor Ma.

'Aiya, first they give me a headache by arguing back and forth now they want me to pick one of them to be my teacher? What are they going to teach me? To be weird like them? hiya! This is really giving me a headache.' thought Lau Hong. Lau Hong looked at Doctor Ma and then looked to the left towards Mrs. Ma.

"Well, who are you going to pick?" said Mrs. Ma.

'Headache? Hmmm...I got it!' thought Lau Hong. With that thought, he smiled mischiviously and pretended to faint out of tireness.

"Aiya! Old man! See what you did? You asked too much questions now he has fainted! Are you satisfied!" said Mrs. Ma

Both elders were panicked. Dr. Ma grabbed the wrist of Lau Hong and checked his pulse. Suddenly he laughed with mirth. “Ha, ha. Ha, ha.”

Mrs. Ma was worried. She scolded her old man, “Old Turtle, what are you laughing about? Have you lost your mind? Do something, quick. You don’t want to lose our student, do you?”

Dr. Ma ignored her. After a while, he let go of Lau Hong’s wrist and told his wife with grim face. “Hmm, he was too exhausted. Better have him rest here for a day or two. We’ll talk to him again when he is fully recovered. Meanwhile, my dear wife, you’d better brew your special longevity medicine for him everyday. His health should come first anyhow.”

Unable to disagree with Dr. Ma on this point, Mr. Ma just stormed out to her herbal hut – muttering something like ‘selfish old man’, ‘old turtle, I know your trick’, and ‘I won’t give up yet. You wait and see’.

After making sure that the old woman had left his premise, Dr. Ma resumed his gleeful smile. He shook Lau Hong gently and whispered, “Hey, the Old Crone is gone. You can wake up now.”

Realising that the fainting trick was detected, Lau Hong opened his eyes sheepishly. He was about to explain when the old man waved at him. “I know why you did that. You were just trying to be nice to my wife, weren’t you? You want to be my apprentice, but didn’t want to hurt her feeling. That’s all right. We’ll keep this secret for a while. During these 2-3 days, I will teach you some basic knowledge of healing. By the time, the old woman learns about this, it’ll be too late. Ha, ha. Ah Hong, I like you more and more. You are just cheeky like me when I was young. He, he, imagine feigning a faint on Dr. Ma.”

Lau Hong was half-annoyed, half-amused at this weird couple. Still, he was adamant. “Thank you, Elder Ma. It is an honour to be wanted as your apprentice, but I really can’t. I already have sifu, and I can’t just go be anyone’s apprentice without Sifu’s permission. If you let me rest for a night, I will be gone in the morning.”

Dr. Ma protested with dismay, “No, no. You can’t really mean it. Don’t you know everyone would do anything just to be in your shoes right now? See, I chose you because you got the right head shape. And look, you have two swirls on your heads too – just like my head. Stay with me, and I will make you the best healer in the world.”

Lau Hong instinctively touched his heads, but had to wince with pain. “Ouch!” Then he smiled and explained to Dr. Ma, “Oh! That knob was just from knocking my head with something when I fell down on the floor. I don’t really have 2 swirls. You probably should go find another apprentice.”

The old man was so disappointed. However, he had already made a decision. “That’s OK. You don’t have to be like me. It’s hard anyway to find anyone as smart as I am. You are pretty intelligent fellow, and you are good-looking too. Can’t stand an ugly face, you know. An old crone is enough to bear with already.” He consoled his student-to-be.

Lau Hong was running out of reasons. All of a sudden, he felt cold then hot then cold again. He began shivering violently, at the same time sweats were pouring down his forehead continuously. He felt as if hundred needles were stabbing his inner body. Unable to withstand the pain anymore, he fainted for real this time.

At first Dr. Ma thought that Lau Hong was up to the old trick again. But after looking as his student’s pale face, he was alarmed. Checking at Lau Hong’s wrist again, he was bewildered. Immediately, he went to the next hut to fetch his wife.

Dr. Ma half-dragged, half-pulled Mrs. Ma to the unconscious youth. He pointed at Lau Hong and told his wife with distress, “I just found out that he was injured with the Ice and Fire Palm. It was the most lethal palm that I have ever countered. When I transferred my energy to him a moment ago, the poison was not in effect yet. Now it is spreading throughout his body, and I can’t do anything about it. The more energy he gains from outside, the quicker this poison palm will destroy his body. I’m afraid there’s no cure except that he have enough strength to purge the poison out himself.”

His old wife was frantic. “Oh, great!” She scolded her husband, “So, you brought a dying man for our apprentice. You can’t cure him, but I can. I have a lot of herbs that can help increasing his inner strength. If he drinks my medicine everyday, his inner power will be tenfold stronger.”

Dr. Ma, however, turned up his nose at his wife’s boast. “Hmm, it isn’t as simple as that. But who said I would give up? As long as he is alive, he is my student, and I wouldn’t let him die.”

His wife shrieked furiously, “You? What can you do? Haven’t you done enough harms to him already? Bah, I have enough of your boasting. I’m going to take him to my hut. He is my student, and I will cure him myself.”

Actually, Dr. Ma had given up Lau Hong to the death, but with his wife’s challenge, how could he admit the defeat? Consequently, he made a bet with his wife to see who would succeed in rescue the young man first. The couple then agreed that Lau Hong would spend the morning with Mrs. Ma and the evening with Dr. Ma. His health would be checked after each session. Whoever succeeded in curing him could claim him as his/her apprentice without further protest from the other party.
