Wow, a lot of posting has gone on while I was away.

SS: I haven't seen charbydis around the spcnet board for a long time. I hope she hasn't forgotten about TOV. And Goofy seems to have disappeared, too. Wasn't she one of the original writers, too?

Tweety: When you wanted to quit your wuxia fanfic, I begged and begged you to reconsider, but you just stopped writing. I liked the story and your characters a lot.

Sakha: I guess you're a Kristy fan, since you want to start off reading about Gong Yu's part of the story? Well, Yee Kin first makes a brief appearance in chapter 11, gets a bigger role in chapter 13. Gong Yu discovers she has become blind in chapter 18. Hope you have fun reading, Sakha, and thank you again for reading Legendary Book.

Hi, everyone. I guess WhiteHairedMaiden's latest post made me feel so bad for being so slow with my updates that I finally got off my buttocks and finished the rest of chapter 59. So here it is. I hope everyone enjoys it. (Actually, I hope I still have some readers left. )

    CHAPTER 59 --- HALF A GUARDIAN

Previously, in Legendary Book of Sun-Moon Swordplay, Chi Chi and Sai Chung are separated in the forest of Green Python Valley. Wandering through the woods searching for Chi Chi, Sai Chung finds a body resembling Chi Chi hanging from a tree branch. Overcome with grief, he rushes over to free her body. However, he soon realizes too late that an ambush awaits him and he ends up injured and is left to die.

Meanwhile, the Koo brothers, Fei and Keung, cross paths with Madame Lam, who gives chase, intent on retrieving the antidote to cure her second son, Yik Wah. Cornered by Madame Lam in an old cave in Green Python Valley, Fei happens upon the legendary Sword of Sun, which has remained dormant for centuries, waiting for the reincarnation of the Guardian to remove it from its resting place. As if pre-determined by destiny, Fei pulls the sword easily from the stone wedge…

    Characters appearing in this chapter:
Louis Koo Tin Lok---Koo Yat Fei
Idy Chan Yuk Lin---Chan Yin Yuk
Benny Chan Ho Man---Koo Yat Keung
    Gigi Lai Chi---Lam Chi Chi
Kevin Cheng Ka Wing---Cheng Sai Chung

    Guest appearances in this chapter:
    Lau Dan---Old Man
    Lee Heung Kum---Old Woman

    GREEN PYTHON VALLEY
    CAVE

With the quivering Sword of Sun in his hands, its blade emitting an almost blinding yellow-red glow, Fei threatens his opponents.

    "Stay away, everyone!" He warns.

Without any change in her expression, Yin Yuk makes a move to approach Fei, unwilling to back off from the young man who poisoned her second son, Yik Wah.

As Yin Yuk advances forward, Fei shouts, "I mean it! If you dare to come one more step toward me, I’ll swing this sword at you!" He emphasizes his threat by whipping the blade in a wide arc. A blast of energy cuts across the path of the sword, causing the walls of the cave to shudder as a thin crack swiftly snakes its way across the ground.

Noting the sword’s almost uncontrollable power, Yin Yuk hesitates, reevaluating her odds of overtaking Fei. "The Sword of Sun…" She murmurs to herself with disbelief. "The legend of the sword’s existence is true, then…"

Meanwhile, the elderly couple remains glued to the entrance of the inner chamber of the cave, oblivious to Fei’s words. Speechless, they could only stare in awe at the Sword of Sun, mesmerized by its brilliance and greatness.

"I’ve heard stories of the Sword of Sun’s power in the hands of its rightful owner, but never, in my wildest dreams, did I picture such magnificence." The old man mutters under his breath, almost afraid to breathe too loudly for fear of disturbing the sanctity of the moment.

"So you think we’ve finally found the reincarnation of the Guardian? Are you sure?" The old woman asks her husband, who continues to gawk at the blade, which continues to vibrate almost violently in Fei’s hands.

"Of course, I’m sure, Old Woman!" The old man admonishes his wife. "If he isn’t the Guardian, then he would not have been able to remove that sword from the stone wedge! According to legend, the mythical Sword of Sun is destined to have only one master and shall only reveal its power in the hands of its rightful owner. When the Guardian met his demise hundreds of years ago, his sword ‘died’ with him, its energy and life locked away until its master walks the earth again." Glancing at his wife, he concludes triumphantly as he points at Fei. "So you see, Old Woman. If that young man isn’t the reincarnation of the Guardian, then how did he remove the Sword of Sun from its resting place and why would the sword be glowing so fiercely right now?"

Shaking her head doubtfully, the old woman wrinkles her forehead. "I don’t know, Old Man…" She looks hard at Fei, who stands with his feet apart, glaring at Yin Yuk belligerently, as if daring her to attack him. "The sword…" She gestures at the Sword of Sun. As she speaks, the sword’s blade starts to lose its fire, its brilliance flickering brightly one moment and then dimming into darkness the next. "Something is wrong with the sword."

Scrutinizing the Sword of Sun closely, the old man frowns. "You have a point, Old Woman." Scratching his beard in confusion, he shakes his head, puzzled. "If the legend is true, then the true reincarnation of the Guardian should have complete control over the Sword of Sun. The sword should not be alternately glowing and dimming, as if something is preventing it from exhibiting its full potential."

"It’s almost as if…" The old woman begins.

"…something is missing!" The old man finishes his wife’s thought.

"Then that young man is not the reincarnation of the Guardian." The elderly wife concludes.

"But he has to be the Guardian!" The old man argues. "He would not have been able to remove the sword from the stone wedge if he isn’t!"

"I say he’s not!" The old woman retorts.

Drawing his brows close together, the old man whirls toward his wife, his rotund belly jiggling indignantly. "Well, I say he is! We have guarded the Sword of Sun for over seventy years. In all those years, there have been countless young men who have attempted, without success, to remove the sword from its resting place. Finally, after so many years, this youngster comes along and succeeds where many have failed. If he’s not the Guardian, then who is?"

"Well, he’s only half a Guardian, then!" The elderly woman spats back at her husband.

"What nonsense is this? What in the world is ‘half a Guardian?’" The old man demands loudly.

In reply, she slaps her hands onto her hips and huffs out. "He’s half a Guardian because the Sword of Sun only glows half of the time in his hands!"

"Ludicrous! Absolutely ludicrous! What in the world does ‘half a Guardian’ mean? He’s either the Guardian, or he’s not!" The old man hollers, so engrossed in his altercation with his wife that he forgets that three other people are in the cave.

"Hey!" Fei screams with bad temper, trying to project his voice above those of the elderly couple. "What are you two squabbling about over there?" Waving his sword belligerently at the old man and his wife, he commands. "You two, get over here and stand next to Madame Lam." He gestures at Yin Yuk, who observes Fei with calm eyes, appearing totally unaffected by his ranting.

As Fei backs away from Yin Yuk and the elderly couple and inches his way toward the opening of the cave, Keung rushes to his side.

"Elder Brother, let’s get out of here." Keung mutters, his eyes also trained cautiously on Yin Yuk.

"Hey, young man!" The old man calls out. "Aren’t you curious at all about the sword in your hand?"

Narrowing his eyes at the elderly man, Fei smiles coldly. "I could care less about this sword’s origin. I just know that the elegant Madame Lam here seems to be afraid of it. Ha ha!"

As he chuckles smugly, he continues to slowly make his exit. Darting his eyes toward Keung, he whispers, "As soon as we leave this cave, we should split up so that we have a greater chance of escape if they should decide to give chase."

With those words, Fei somersaults out of the cave, with Keung following close behind.

"You think you can escape so easily?" Yin Yuk says calmly, her voice soft, but edged with ice. "You think you can just leave like that without giving me the antidote for my second son?"

A flash of white fabric shoots out from her sleeve, cutting with deadly precision through the air. The sash wraps tightly around Fei’s neck, nearly strangling him, and drags him back into the cave.

Coming to his elder brother’s aid, Keung sends a flying dagger toward the sash, intending to slice the strip of fabric. However, before the dagger is able to come within striking distance, Yin Yuk releases another white sash, intercepting the dagger.

As the dagger clatters to the ground, Keung lunges toward Fei, trying to disentangle his elder brother from the noose around his neck. Blocking Keung’s attempt to help Fei, Yin Yuk whips to the side and delivers a swift kick to Keung’s midsection, sending him catapulting across the cave. Unwilling to give up easily, Keung leaps back onto his feet and flies toward Yin Yuk once again. Meeting her in a clash of palms midair, he winces as his arms shudder from the contact with his opponent’s more powerful palm energy. After a mere few seconds, Keung breaks off the encounter, forced back by Yin Yuk’s superior skills. Landing unsteadily on his feet, he grunts and breathes heavily, his vision blurry.

Barely allowing Keung a chance to recover, Yin Yuk mercilessly advances forward again. Another long length of fabric whips by and wraps itself around Keung’s upper torso, holding him captive.

Meanwhile, Fei gasps for breath as he is unwillingly dragged left and right along with Yin Yuk as she battles with Keung. With his face turning a bright shade of red as he struggles to pull air into his lungs, Fei lifts the Sword of Sun with a shaky hand and attempts to cut the long strip of fabric looped around his neck. However, before he is able do this, Yin Yuk suddenly flies into the air, dragging Keung and Fei out the cave behind her with her long sashes.

At the far side of the cave, the elderly couple watches the battle among Yin Yuk, Fei, and Keung closely. Several times, the old man tries to intercept the fight, but his wife would pull him back each time.

"Let go of me, Old Woman!" The old man yells, shrugging off his wife's hand. "The Guardian is going to get himself killed if we don't come to his aid!"

"Wait, Old Man!" The old woman keeps her hand firmly on her husband's shoulder. "Don't be so rash! We don't know these people and therefore do not even know who is good and who is bad." She narrows her eyes speculatively at Fei, who grasps the Sword of Sun with a death grip, trying to swing it ineffectively at Yin Yuk, who, in turn, dodges his blows expertly. "Besides, we don't even know if that young man is the Guardian." Pointing at the Sword of Sun, the old woman reasons, "Look at the Sword of Sun, Old Man. According to legend, if he is indeed the reincarnation of the Guardian, then the Sword of Sun should attain insurmountable power in his possession. But so far, the sword’s magnificent power seems unstable. Look at the sword right now! It is nothing but a dim piece of metal in the young man's hands. There is something peculiar going on."

Sighing in agreement, the old man mutters, "Well, at least, we should follow them outside and make sure nobody is hurt. I don't want anyone dying before we can straighten out who is the Guardian. After all, we have waited so many years to finally find someone who can remove the Sword of Sun from the stone wedge that I do not want him to drop dead so soon!"

With that declaration, the old man rushes toward the entrance of the cave, with his wife following close on his heels. Outside the cave, the elderly couple find Yin Yuk dragging Fei and Keung behind her with her long sashes. As both men gasp and sputter, she suddenly releases the long ribbons of fabric. Free from the constricting lengths of cloth, the brothers tumble on top of each other in a disorganized heap.

Quickly disentangling himself from Keung, Fei grabs the Sword of Sun and charges at Yin Yuk.

Seeing Fei’s approach, Yin Yuk flings her arm out and a ribbon of white flashes forward, heading straight toward his neck. However, just at that moment, a white blur leaps down in front of the brothers and intercepts Yin Yuk's attack. Deflecting the sash with an intense burst of palm energy, the stranger then pivots sharply toward Fei.

Whirling around to face her new opponent, Yin Yuk demands calmly, her serene expression belying the fury boiling inside her. "Who are you? Why do you interfere with my business?"

The stranger in white stares back at Yin Yuk, his face completely covered by a white cloth obscuring the lower part of his face and a white turban wrapped around his forehead. His eyes, the only part of his countenance exposed, gaze back at Yin Yuk, their dark depths unfathomable.

Ignoring Yin Yuk’s question, the stranger pivots toward Fei, who is still clutching the Sword of Sun tightly in both hands. Without wasting time, the man in white races toward Fei with lightening speed and swoops him up. With superb lightness kung fu, he drags Fei with him and disappears into the dark night.

The old man, wishing to keep Fei and the Sword of Sun in his sight, somersaults up into the air and manages to follow the stranger and Fei for only a few paces before a bright explosion erupts before his eyes. Choking and blinking furiously from the miniature bomb's blinding flashes, he is forced to land and give up his chase.

As the old man lands onto the ground, his wife rushes toward him. "Old Man! Are you hurt?"

"No, no, I'm fine." With his eyes still stinging, he stares off in the direction that the stranger has disappeared. "That sneaky lowlife took off with the Guardian and our Sword of Sun!"

"We need to go after him and get the sword back!" The old woman exclaims. She turns as if about to fly after the stranger, but her husband detains her.

"Old Woman, it is no use. That man is highly skilled in lightness kung fu and would have traveled at least a few thousand miles by now. Besides, it would be difficult to track an experienced martial arts expert in the dark night."

"But we can’t just let that man run off with the Sword of Sun!" The old woman protests.

While the elderly couple continues to bicker in the background, Yin Yuk squints into the darkness. Without wasting precious time, she grabs onto Keung's arm and leaps up into the air, trailing after the stranger with Keung in tow.

    MEANWHILE...
    GREEN PYTHON VALLEY
    FOREST

Chi Chi trudges through the thick brambles, huffing and puffing indignantly. "Hmph! Where is Big Brother Sai Chung? I go off for just a few minutes looking for Mother, and when I turn around, he has disappeared!" Picking up a thin, fallen tree branch, she whacks it at a tree trunk with bad temper.

Still sulking, she stomps left and right, surveying the surrounding forest, hoping to catch sight of Sai Chung. "First, I can't find Mother." She stops her tirade to blow a strand of hair out of her eyes. "THEN, I have to roam about the forest in the middle of nowhere in the middle of the night looking for HIM!" She jabs her tree branch at another tree trunk, emphasizing her frustration and imagines the trunk as Sai Chung's body, "Poke, poke, poke! Ha! Take that, Big Brother Sai Chung! Poke! Poke! Poke! Hmph!"

In the distance, a wolf howls, its cry reverberating hollowly through the silent night. The animal cry halts Chi Chi in her tracks. Glancing around nervously, she drops the small tree branch and crouches down on the forest ground, searching frantically for a larger, more sturdy branch to protect herself with.

The thick ceiling of leaves block out the moonlight, only letting a few weak beams peak through the spaces between the leafy canopy. The wolf howls again, its cry this time sounding closer and more menacing. Frightened, Chi Chi abandons her search for a thick tree branch and takes off at a run, tearing haphazardly through the woods. Lost now, she veers left and right, her breath caught in her throat.

"Big Brother Sai Chung, where are you?" She mutters desperately under her breath. "Don't leave me alone with the wild animals!"

A small forest critter suddenly darts across Chi Chi's path, scaring the wits out of her. "Ahhhh!" She screams and trips over a fallen log.

Landing onto a pile of dried leaves, she scrambles up and starts randomly running around the forest again. "Help! Help! Big Brother Sai Chung!"

Deeper and deeper into the woodland she runs, afraid of stopping, and yet having no sense of direction. Finally, after what seems like an eternity, she stops and doubles over with cramps and exhaustion.

Huffing heavily, she squints anxiously into the darkness, trying to see if any wolves have trailed after her. When she sees nothing but pitch black, she gingerly lowers herself onto a large log covered with dried leaves. Above, the clouds shift lazily and cover the moon, blanketing the forest in complete darkness.

Seated on the large log, she leans back against a tree trunk. Wringing her hands, she gulps several times and continues to survey her surroundings nervously. After of few minutes of vigilance, Chi Chi's heartbeat begins to slow, and she starts to feel rather silly for overreacting to a distant wolf cry.

"Silly me, silly me," she admonishes herself. Taking in a deep breath to steady herself, she wriggles her bottom on the large log. "Hmm, this log here is quite comfortable and soft," she babbles to herself, trying to keep her mind off her fear. "I guess the thick layer of leaves makes it warm and soft. I should be thankful I found such a good resting spot. I'll just sit right here and wait until the clouds part so I can see better and find my way out of the forest."

Settling back more comfortably, she starts counting one through ten, trying to keep her mind occupied. Wriggling her rear end on the log again, she then starts humming to herself. However, despite counting and humming, she cannot keep her mind off the wild animals roaming about in the dark. Finally, sighing with exasperation, she leaps up and starts glancing around anxiously again. Pacing back and forth, she passes by the log she was sitting on and kicks at it absently. Restlessly, she returns to her pacing and then doubles back once more to kick at the log again.

This time, the log shifts and groans softly. Freezing, Chi Chi frowns and narrows her eyes at the log. Staring at it suspiciously for a few seconds, she shakes her head. "Now you're starting to think inanimate logs talk and move!" She berates herself. "When did you become such a coward?"

To prove her bravery, she deliberately kicks the log a third time, this time forcefully. About to deliver a fourth kick, she nearly stumbles back when the 'log' rolls over and groans.

"Ahhh!" Chi Chi screams. "A demon! It's a log demon!" Freaking, she starts scrambling away from the moving ‘log’ when a familiar voice stops her.

"Little Brother? Little Brother, is that you?" A weak voice calls out somewhere near the vicinity of the ‘log.’

"Huh? Huh?" Chi Chi asks the ‘log’ frantically. "Oh my goodness!" She murmurs to herself fretfully. "That log sounds exactly like Big Brother Sai Chung! He must have died and transformed into a log demon!"

Straightening herself up and trying to build up her courage, she approaches the talking ‘log’ cautiously. "Big Brother Sai Chung?" She whispers, using her toe to nudge at the ‘log.’ "Is that you? How come you are a log?"

Suddenly, a hand reaches out and grabs her ankle. Screeching, Chi Chi falls backward and lands onto her bottom. "Ahhh! Don't take me to the underworld with you, Big Brother Sai Chung! I wasn't too mean to you when you were alive, was I?" She stutters. "I mean, sure, I sometimes scold at you. But I usually have a lot to say, and when someone has a lot to say, she sometimes says things she doesn't mean, right?"

Upon hearing her screams and nonsensical babbling, the ‘log’ pops up into a sitting position, dislodging all the dried leaves covering it, revealing Sai Chung underneath.

"Eeeee!" Chi Chi squeals in alarm. Covering her hands over her eyes, she continues to squawk, "Eeee! Eeee! Eeee!"

When she hears no response and senses no movement from Sai Chung, Chi Chi slowly spreads apart her fingers, peaking through the spaces. Noticing Sai Chung collapsed again on the ground, but very much alive and breathing heavily, she breathes out a huge sigh of relief.

"Big Brother Sai Chung!" Chi Chi practically hollers into his face, her expression of intense relief apparent on her face. Launching herself into his arms, she pulls him up to a sitting position and jiggles him up and down, giggling. "Oh, you're alive! I’ve found you! Now I don't have to be alone in this scary forest! You know, you're pretty good at playing dead. What are you doing lying beneath all those leaves, anyway?" She jabbers on and on.

However, Sai Chung remains silent, his breathing labored. Chi Chi, on the other hand, continues to be oblivious of his distress, as she exuberantly pats him repeatedly on his back.

Finally, she notices a sticky wetness seeping from Sai Chung's abdomen and creating a damp spot on the front of her gown. Letting go of Sai Chung, she glances down at his torso and gasps. Surprise quickly evolves into horror as she examines the gaping wound on his abdomen.

Quickly and clumsily covering the wound with her hands in an attempt to staunch the blood flow, she asks, "Big Brother Sai Chung! What happened to you? Who did this to you?"

"Little Brother, Little Brother..." Sai Chung raises his bloodied hand and cups her face in his palm. "Is it really you? You're not dead? You're alive?"

"Of course, I'm not dead!" Chi Chi responds impatiently, fear making her tone sharp. "You're the one who's going to die soon if we don't stop the bleeding!"

"There...there was someone pretending to be you. You were hanging from a tree branch. I thought you were dead!" Sai Chung sputters. "I...I...I ran over and lifted your body from the branch and then you stabbed me. Stabbed me..." His voice weakens and his eyes slowly drift close as darkness envelops him.

"Big Brother Sai Chung! Big Brother Sai Chung!" Chi Chi calls out, shaking him gently, trying to rouse him.

Receiving no response, she quickly rips his outer gown into long strips and ties the long pieces together. Wrapping the long lengths of cloth around Sai Chung's torso to temporarily lessen the blood flow, she then stumbles to her feet. Hooking her hands under Sai Chung's arms, she heaves and huffs and puffs, trying to move him. Slowly and steadily, she drags his heavy weight along the forest ground.

Seconds become minutes, and minutes merge into hours. As the night air turns from chilly to bitterly cold, Chi Chi continues to forge ahead. Not before long, exhaustion begins to seep into her bones, clouding her senses, blurring her mind. Looking drowsily ahead, she sees the faint outline of a cave at long last. Determined to get Sai Chung to some sort of shelter for the night, she grits her teeth and heaves again.

The clouds finally part to once again reveal the bright moon, its pale rays peaking through the holes in the thick leafy ceiling, falling onto the forest ground in swirls of soft, dreamy light.

Overhead, a raven circles the heavens twice before landing onto a low branch. The large bird’s glossy, ink-black feathers glisten in the moonlight, its bright eyes glowing, as the bird silently watches the outlines of the two humans gradually fade into the night…

    MEANWHILE…
    GREEN PYTHON VALLEY
IN ANOTHER PART OF THE FOREST

Dragging Fei along, the white-clothed stranger lands onto a clearing in the forest and drops Fei unceremoniously onto the damp earth.

Grunting, Fei struggles to his feet using the Sword of Sun as leverage and whirls toward the stranger. Pale rays of moonlight slash across the stranger’s face, accentuating his sharp eyes. The rest of him remains fully covered, making it difficult for Fei to identify the man in white.

Uncertain if this person is friend or foe, Fei asks warily, "Why have you rescued me?"

Silence meets his question. Dark eyes survey Fei and finally settle on the Sword of Sun clutched in his hand. Without a word, the man in white suddenly lunges toward Fei with amazing swiftness.

Barely left with any time to react, Fei raises his palms toward the stranger. As he senses his opponent’s palms contact his, Fei experiences an electrical shock rip through his body as the stranger’s superior internal energy knocks him backward. Catapulting across the forest clearing, he feels a sharp sting at the back of his head as his skull forcefully contacts a large tree trunk. As his vision begins to fade, the last thing Fei remembers is a white shadow chuckling, chuckling maliciously, as it flies off with the Sword of Sun.

    CHAPTER 60 --- DANCING FAIRIES

    Characters appearing in this chapter:
Gilbert Lam Wai Sun---Lam Yik Lun
Annie Man Chung Han---So Sui Han

    BLUE MOON VILLAGE

Darkness, complete black, surrounds him, closing in on him like thick, relentless waves. Frightened, he bats his arms around, trying to ward off the dread, attempting unsuccessfully to swim away from the black sea of panic. Just when he is about to drown in his own terror, he catches sight of a speck of bright, orange-red light in the distance. Hope surges through him, as he fights his way through the dark toward the light, toward his salvation.

A sword, a unique sword like no other, glowing with the fiery orange-red hues of the sun flashes like a beacon, luring him closer and closer. After what seems like an eternity, he finally reaches the light. Staggering toward the weapon, he feels his heart quicken with anticipation. Drawn inexplicably to the orange-red glow, he reverently touches the jeweled hilt of the sword. The weapon suddenly starts to vibrate, each wave becoming more and more intense, as if the sword is commanding him to take it, to use it to claim what is his. As he claims possession of the sword, he experiences a surge of infinite power wash over him.

But he does not feel whole. Something is missing. Something remains incomplete. Suddenly, dark mist begins to infiltrate his world, obscuring his view. Confused, he opens his mouth to call out, but no sound comes out. He cannot put his thoughts into words. All he knows is that he is searching...searching for his other half. They were two parts of a whole once upon a time. But now they have entered this world, separated, each his own individual, but never complete until the other is found.

With the glowing sword in hand, he turns, round and round, until, in the distance, he sees the faint glimmer of orange-red. As the curtain of mist lifts, layer by layer, he sees the dark outline of a figure, holding another sword identical to his. This second weapon also shimmers a bright orange-red. As if floating, the dark figure glides closer and closer. Finally, he sees the dark figure's features clearly. Gasping in disbelief, he remains motionless as he stares into a replica of his own face.

Two of me! There are two of me, his shocked mind realizes. But then, the other figure's features start shifting, changing, into another man with another face.

Two men, so different from each other, and yet, sharing a common bond - the identical swords in their hands. Suddenly, of their own volition, the swords rattle fiercely, each weapon drawing closer and closer to its counterpart, as if attracted by a strong magnetic field. As the swords approach each other, they meld together to become one, a single glorious creation of blinding light and insurmountable power.

And in that moment, both men have become one, in mind and soul.

But in the distance, an eerie menace lurks, a dark shadow, fleeting and formless, as it slithers closer and closer, and envelops the brilliant orange-red glow of the sword and rips the sword away.

Left with nothing, he glances over at his counterpart, the man who is his twin, and watches in horrific helplessness as his twin is torn away. Opening his mouth to scream, he chokes as blackness closes in, suffocating him beneath its heavy weight, blinding him, filling him with nothing but terror.

    ********************

    BLUE MOON VILLAGE

Lun screams silently, the sound fighting to escape through his lips, and yet he cannot manage to open his mouth. A feeling of inexplicable fear washes over him and he grapples with an invisible monster, one that is undefeatable in the murky world of his nightmare. In the distance, a soft and familiar voice calls out urgently to him. He quickly and desperately latches onto that voice as if it were a lifeline.

"First Young Master! First Young Master!" Sui Han shakes Lun's shoulders, hoping to rouse him from his nightmare.

Forcing his eyes open, he focuses in on Sui Han's worried eyes. Still dazed from his dream, he stares wide-eyed at her, as if in a trance.

"First Young Master! First Young Master!" Sui Han calls out again. Concerned, she takes a torn piece of cloth and dabs at the beads of sweat on his forehead. "First Young Master, wake up, please! You're scaring me!"

Finally, Lun's glazed eyes seem to sharpen as he truly focuses on Sui Han. "Sui Han?" He asks groggily. "What happened?"

"You were dreaming and kept mumbling in your sleep. Then you tried to strike out at me when I came over to wake you up." Sui Han replies. She helps him sit up and encourages him to lean back against a large tree trunk.

"Where are we?" Lun inquires, surveying his unfamiliar surroundings.

"I’m not quite sure. We’re a few miles away from that cottage we were at earlier tonight." Sui Han answers. "Remember? We intended to travel a bit further to put more distance away from that strange old woman, who tried to kill me. But then, you seemed so exhausted that we decided to stop and rest here."

Nodding slowly, Lun murmurs. "Yes, I remember now." Running a hand over his tired face, he blinks several times, trying to clear his bleary eyes. Clearing this dry throat, he rests his head tiredly against the tree trunk.

"Are you thirsty? I'll get you some water." Leaning over him, Sui Han rummages through a travel pack sitting by the campfire. Finding the animal skin water flask, she hands it to him and watches him chug down the water. Still concerned, she places a cool hand on his forehead. "How do you feel?" As her palm contacts his hot forehead, she pulls back in alarm. "You're burning up with fever! I'll go see if I can find a stream nearby and get you some cool water to wash with!"

As she starts to leap up, Lun grabs hold of her hand. "No, Sui Han, I'll be fine. I just need some rest." When Sui Han opens her mouth to protest, he shakes his head tiredly. "I'll be fine." He repeats firmly. Pulling her down next to him, he asks, "Just sit with me and keep me company."

Reluctantly settling herself down onto the damp earth next to Lun, Sui Han frowns. "All right, then." Feeling the hard, soggy forest ground beneath her, she wrinkles her brow. "First Young Master, it must be uncomfortable sitting on this hard earth." She gets up again and starts to flutter about, busily rummaging through the travel bag in search of something to put together a makeshift seat cushion for him.

Grinning weakly, but with amusement, Lun pulls her down next to him once more. "Sui Han, relax! You’re so restless, are you nervous around me? I’m all bark and no bite." He jokes.

Sui Han flushes at his comment. Wringing her hands together, she confesses, "I’m actually a bit anxious right now, but not because I’m afraid you’ll bite me. I have sharp teeth, too, and I can bite just as well as you can. See?" She bares her teeth in a toothy grin, but swiftly slams her mouth shut when she hears Lun roar in merriment.

"Then what are you worried about, Sui Han?" Lun asks laughingly.

"Well, you just seemed so fatigued and weak earlier that you really worried me. I’ve never seen you so tired before that I don’t know what to do." She frets. Pausing, she peers at him solemnly. "Is it that nightmare that put that tired look on your face?" When he sighs, she pursues curiously, tilting her head up at him. "What is it about?"

Shaking his head with puzzlement, Lun furrows his brow. "I am not sure what my dream means. I was being chased by darkness, a nebulous black void that not only tried to consume me whole, but also tried to take my soul. I was frightened and desperately trying to claw my way out of the bottomless chasm." He pauses and stares off into the distance, his mind reliving his nightmare. "Then, in the distance, I see brightness and hope, represented by a single sword with the brilliant glow of the sun."

"A sword of bright light?" Sui Han inquires. "Could this be the famous Sword of Sun?"

"The Sword of Sun?" Lun turns and looks sharply at Sui Han. "I’ve only heard my parents mention about this weapon twice, and even then, I have only caught snatches of their conversation. Where have you heard about the Sword of Sun, Sui Han?"

Shrugging, Sui Han replies, "I’ve only heard bits and pieces of gossip about the Sword of Sun. During the time I spent at Yee Heung Lau Brothel in the City of Lam On, I was forced to entertain customers during the evening meal. Many men of prominence frequent Yee Heung Lau, and so I would overhear conversations relating to important affairs in the martial arts world."

Sui Han’s eyes become hard as she recalls the behaviors and attitudes of some of the more obnoxious patrons of Yee Heung Lau. "It’s funny how some men can speak so carelessly in the company of strange women who they don’t even know are friend or foe. Some customers are very tight-lipped. But there are others who would speak as if the prostitutes do not exist, even though they are sitting right next to them at the dining table." Laughing bitterly, she continues. "I suppose to the customers, we are nothing but objects who would sell ourselves if the price is right and not human beings with eyes that can see and ears that can hear everything they say."

"Sui Han," Lun interrupts her, his eyes soft, as he places a hand gently over hers. "I’ve never thought of you as a prostitute, and you will never be an object to be bought and sold in my eyes."

Swallowing her bitterness, she turns and smiles sweetly at Lun. "I know that, First Young Master. From the moment I first met you, I have known in my heart that you are a gentleman and would never insult a woman."

For a few minutes, both gaze into each other’s eyes. For the first time since meeting Lun, Sui Han’s heart skips a beat. Unsure of how to interpret this new feeling she has for him, she quickly averts her eyes.

Clearing her throat self-consciously, she pulls her hand away from his grasp and brings the conversation back to the Sword of Sun. "Umm, anyway, while I was at the brothel, these two flamboyantly dressed men strutted in one day, as if they owned the place. I immediately knew that these men were braggarts, just from their swaggering. I was assigned to entertain them during their meal. They spoke so loudly, as if the higher volume would signify their importance." Sui Han huffs slightly with disdain. "I remembered my head throbbed from their incessant chatter, but something they said caught my interest."

Starring at Lun, Sui Han continues, "The younger man spoke of a mystical sword, a weapon of incredible power that glowed like the bright rays of the sun in the hands of its rightful owner. He bragged that, one day, he would find this weapon and possess it."

Grinning mischievously at Lun, Sui Han giggles, "That man looked like he could not even handle a twig, let alone a legendary weapon like the Sword of Sun, if such a sword existed. He was so full of hot air, I was afraid he would release a burst of disturbingly awful gas! Hmph!"

Chuckling, Lun shakes his head, bemused. "Sui Han! You appear so demure, I never knew you could even harbor such thoughts!"

Blushing at her unladylike slip of tongue, Sui Han gasps and covers her mouth. "I’m sorry, First Young Master." She apologizes sheepishly. "That just burst out of me without thought. I am not usually like this. I guess that man annoyed me so much with his superior-than-thou attitude. Anyway, his older companion snorted at that declaration, hinting that the younger man did not have the skill to wield such a weapon. He claimed that the Sword of Sun was cursed. It had once belonged to the Chancellor of the martial arts world centuries ago. This chancellor was respected, but somewhat of a recluse. Many believed that he had become that way because he had loved an evil temptress. Cursed by the temptress to a lifetime of never-ending unhappiness, he chose to live in seclusion until he died a lonely old man. His weapon, the all-mighty Sword of Sun, lost its power, day by day, as its owner fell into a deep depression. It now remains asleep, lying dormant somewhere out there, waiting for its next destined owner to once again awaken its power. Until then, it is nothing but a useless piece of metal."

Frowning, Lun presses his lips together, deep in thought. "Strange…that’s not the story I heard from my parents about the Sword of Sun. From what I know, the previous owner of the sword betrayed his love, an innocent who was misunderstood by the martial arts world. Eventually, the members of the righteous martial arts sects ambushed her and killed her. But the chancellor was too cowardly to come to her aid. When he finally made up his mind to rescue her, it was too late."

"He had forsaken their love for power and prestige. He had loved her, but he was not strong enough to believe in her and to stand up for her when she needed him most. And so she died. On the day she passed away, his spirit died with her, for he could no longer be whole without the one person in the world who made him feel complete. As his spirit wilted away, so did the power of the Sword of Sun, as the weapon's strengths and its owner were bound as one. Despondent and full of regrets, the chancellor laid the sword to rest, with the vow that its brilliance will only reawaken if fate allowed him another chance to cross paths with his love once more."

"Therefore, centuries have passed, and yet, the two star-crossed lovers have not reunited. And so the Sword of Sun remains in deep slumber, waiting for destiny to bring its master back to it." Sui Han finishes the story.

"How do you know the rest of the tale?" Lun asks.

Shrugging, Sui Han simply replies, "It is strange, but somehow I know how the story ends." Sighing, she hugs the travel bundle tightly to her chest, her expression glum. "I wonder how she must have felt, to be abandoned by the one she loved, to die alone, betrayed and shunned."

Smiling, Lun looks at Sui Han indulgently. "You have a soft heart, Sui Han. How do you know that she died alone? You weren't there when she passed away."

Looking at Lun solemnly, Sui Han says, "I just know. For some reason, I just know that she must have been filled with despair and confused anger, even during her last breath on this earth. Maybe I know because of my woman's intuition."

They sit in silence, each deep in thought. Lun shifts his position on the hard forest ground, grimacing slightly as he feels a sharp painful twist inside his ribs where he was kicked earlier by the Master in the underground palace.

Noting his discomfort, Sui Han exclaims worriedly, "First Young Master, how are you feeling?"

"I'm fine," he grunts breathlessly, waiting for the pang of agony to pass. "I just need a good sleep, devoid of dreams, and I'll be fine tomorrow."

Nodding in agreement, Sui Han starts busily digging through the travel pack in her lap, "Yes, you should rest. But first, you should eat something. It will keep your strength up."

She digs through the travel sack and pulls out a cloth-wrapped packet of biscuits. Her stomach growling, she eagerly unwraps the packet, only to reveal one single biscuit left. Staring at the lone biscuit in disbelief and disappointment, she frowns and swallows, trying to ignore the loud, conspicuous rumbling of her stomach.

Pasting a smile on her face, she takes out the biscuit and quickly stuffs the handkerchief back into the travel sack, so that Lun could not see that they have only one biscuit left. "Here, First Young Master," she offers him the last biscuit. "Eat this. It will make you feel better and help you regain your strength."

Knowing very well that she is offering him the last biscuit, he lowers his head to hide his smile. Then, lifting his face again, he says with a deadpan expression, "Sure, I’m so hungry, I could finish the entire biscuit in one bite." He replies with a teasing twinkle in his eyes.

Secretly hoping that he would share a small piece of the food, Sui Han’s heart sinks but she tries to keep a cheery expression as she hands over the biscuit. He takes it from her, smiling to himself when he notices the crestfallen look on her face, despite her best efforts to look nonchalant.

As Lun pretends to lift the biscuit to his mouth to take a bite, Sui Han’s stomach growls, the gurgling noise echoing in the night, announcing her hunger as loudly as possible. Blushing, Sui Han lowers her head and tries to hide her flushed cheeks.

Extremely amused by Sui Han’s loud gurgling stomach, Lun laughs, quite loudly.

Upon hearing his chuckle, she frowns, a bit offended that he is laughing at her hunger. Frustrated, she glances up quickly at him, about to give him a piece of her mind. Meeting his amused eyes, she opens her mouth, but only a surprised "ooohh" escapes when he hands the uneaten biscuit to her.

"What?" He asks laughingly at the incredulous expression on Sui Han’s face. "Do you think First Young Master would eat the last biscuit and let you go hungry?"

Blushing shamefully, Sui Han whispers with embarrassment. "Sorry, First Young Master. I thought you were laughing at me, so I..." She trails off, too flustered to finish her sentence.

"So you were going to yell at me, right?" He completes her thought. Chuckling heartily, he shakes his head. "You’re even more enchanting with that angry sparkle flashing in your eyes."

Cheeks rosy at the compliment, Sui Han offers him a sheepish smile. "I guess I have a fiery temper that I have been trying to hide from you."

"And why are you trying to hide your true self from me?" Lun gives her a tender look.

"Because you’re the young master and I’m the servant girl!" Sui Han replies. She rolls her eyes. "You would send me packing if I yelled and nagged at you like a shrew!"

Staring at her intently for a split second, Lun pauses and clears his throat. Gathering his courage, he covers his large hand over her smaller, more delicate one. "I would never send you packing, even if you screamed at me day and night. If it were up to me, I would keep you by my side forever."

When she glances into his eyes with surprise and then quickly averts her own eyes, he adds quickly to lighten the moment, "Besides, I’m sometimes hard of hearing because of my thick skull. Screaming at me is one way to make sure I hear you."

Giggling lightly, Sui Han shifts her merry eyes back toward Lun. "I guess you do have a thick skull, First Young Master. After all, you’ve fallen and knocked your head against granite so many times in the Master’s underground lair, and yet, your skull is still intact."

Both chuckle for a few seconds. As their laughter trails off, they sit in companionable silence. The gray clouds above shift lazily and cover the moon. Without the moon's illumination, the forest transforms into complete darkness. In the distance, an owl calls out, blending its voice with the symphony of sounds created by the crickets and other small forest critters.

Relaxed, Sui Han leans against the tree trunk behind her and gazes upward. She gasps in pleasure when she notices the tiny pinpoints of starlight glistening like bright, colorful jewels in the sky. "Look, First Young Master!" Sui Han cries, pointing toward the heavens joyfully.

Glancing heavenward, Lun murmurs, "Yes, the night sky is like a canvas of twinkling lights. I can't remember the last time I stopped and just admired the stars."

"Mmm," Sui Han agrees, fascinated and pleased to witness such a beautiful display of nature. Suddenly, she turns a beaming face toward Lun, her eyes animated. "I believe the stars are beautiful fairies in the sky, who come out at night to practice for a grand ball that the Jade Emperor will be holding." She points at a cluster of stars glowing with bright reds, blues, and golds. "See that group of stars over there? They are grouped together because those fairies are the best of friends, and so they congregate together, practicing their dancing. See?" She gestures excitedly. "The red star is a petite fairy with a fiery temper. Her feisty nature shines like a beacon, attracting admirers throughout the heavens! She loves to dress in reds, and each time the star twinkles, it represents a twirl of her shimmering red gown."

Laughing lightly at Sui Han's enthusiasm, Lun replies, "Is that so? And the blue and gold stars?"

"Well, the blue star represents a more even-tempered fairy, one who is cool-headed and likes to plan and think things through before she acts. Her beauty is one of serenity. And the gold star is the eldest fairy of the bunch. She is knowledgeable, a leader by nature. She is one of the daughters of the Jade Emperor, as shown by her gold gown, the color of royalty! Her beauty is one of maturity and wisdom."

"Hmm, it looks like you know these fairies quite well." Lun comments in a joking tone. "Any chance that you are a fairy in disguise?"

Grinning in response, Sui Han simply smiles secretively and turns her attention back toward the heavens. A soft breeze sweeps by, rustling tendrils of Sui Han's hair.

Leaning over, Lun gently brushes one of the tendrils aside for her. Silently, Sui Han stares at him for a long moment. Shivering slightly, she wraps her arms around herself.

Taking a chance, Lun scoots closer and places an arm around her shoulders. "Cold?" He asks. He waits for a heartbeat, his pulse racing uncertainly. When Sui Han does not slap him, he slowly tightens his hold on her.

Together, both sit in silence, slightly tense, each gazing at the stars, pretending to be fascinated by the heavens. Then, Sui Han slowly lowers her head down onto Lun's shoulders and allows her eyes to drift close. Exuberant beyond belief, Lun's heart does several flip-flops. Willing his heartbeat to settle down, he lowers his head on top of hers, so that his cheek gently grazes her forehead.

Nearby, the campfire that Sui Han has started earlier crackles softly, sending yellow-orange sparks whirling in a tiny tornado above the licking flames. Happiness seeps through Lun, washing over him like a gentle wave of warmth. Lowering his eyes toward Sui Han, he notices her gentle breathing, the light sweep of her long eyelashes, and the delicate outline of her features. Remembering the childlike delight she exhibited earlier when she recounted her starry tales, he smiles to himself.

Almost inaudibly, he whispers to her sleeping figure. "Do you know that you're my little fairy? You're my gold, blue, and red fairies all combined into one. And when I am with you, I feel as if I am in heaven, twirling with you high above in the sky, among the twinkling lights. But no light could be brighter than the flame I have in my heart, which shines for no other but you."

Unaware of his words, Sui Han murmurs in her sleep and shifts in his arms. Sighing, Lun closes his eyes, and gradually he, too, falls into deep slumber. Above, the stars sparkle brilliantly, as Sui Han's heavenly fairies smile down on them.

"I mean, sure, I sometimes scold at you. But I usually have a lot to say, and when someone has a lot to say, she sometimes says things she doesn't mean, right?"

lol. I like Chi Chi more than I ever did.

And great work, Melanie. I love the new chapters, esp. the last one... That moment under the stars is wonderful. I love the description of the fairies. You've created a great couple in Wai Sun and Sui Han, besides Gong Yu and Yee Kin. Ive liked the latter the best till now, but the first two are catching up.

I do like ya. The writer comes thru in their writing after all.

    *thumbs up*

Well, here I am, back again for another chapter. I want to thank Isis, WhiteHairedMaiden, and Spidey for leaving me messages. Your comments mean a great deal to me and I am very, very grateful for your interest in the story. I am especially sentimental this evening, because WhiteHairdedMaiden sent me a very kind PM. I have already said this to WhiteHairedMaiden, but I would also like to share my feelings with everyone here as well. I started this story ages ago on a whim, so that I could give my favorite actors their moment in the limelight. But I would not have been able to come this far without my readers' support. My story is far from perfect, and nobody sees the flaws in it as clearly as I do. I struggle to make each chapter as enjoyable as possible, but I know my limitations as a writer. And that is why I am so humbled to know that there are a few here in this forum who still think my story is worth their time. Thanks for keeping this story alive, everyone. Anyway, enough of my nonsensical chattering. Hope you like chapter 61.

CHAPTER 61 --- SWORD OF MOON

    Characters appearing in this chapter:
Annie Man Chung Han---So Sui Han
Gilbert Lam Wai Sun---Lam Yik Lun
Kristy Yeung Gong Yu---Lam Suk Yu

    BLUE MOON VILLAGE

Cold…bitter cold sets in as the night grows darker. The gray clouds once again hide the moonlight, throwing the forest into complete black. The campfire, once bright and warm with crackling flames, has been extinguished by the wind. The last of the golden embers dances above the campfire, only to be quickly swept away by the breeze.

A gust of chilly air rushes by, brushing its frozen fingers against Sui Han’s cheeks, bringing shivers down her spine. Awakened by some unknown force, she sits up and stares with confusion into the darkness, trying to orient herself. With half-hooded eyes still drowsy with sleep, she stumbles to her feet, squinting her eyes at a bright blue glow in the distance.

As if in a trance, she walks forward, trekking slowly and steadily deeper and deeper into the woodland, following the blue light. Behind her, an exhausted Lun remains deep in slumber, unaware of Sui Han’s departure.

As Sui Han journeys further into the depths of the forest, the trees seem to shift and close in behind her, blocking off her route of escape and simultaneously preventing anyone from following. Finally, she reaches a clearing in the forest, one so large that the vast expanse of land appears to stretch indefinitely.

Snapping out of her trance, Sui Han blinks and glances around in puzzlement. "Where am I?" She murmurs to herself.

Quickly, she spins around, trying to find a path back toward Lun. However, she sees no trail leading her back.

"First Young Master?" She calls out, hoping he would answer.

Unfortunately, only her voice echoes back hollowly. Crossing her arms across her chest, she hugs herself to ward off the chill. Cautiously, Sui Han makes her way across the clearing.

Nothing but barren land stretches before her. Small pieces of rock and granite crunch beneath her booted feet. No greenery populates this area of the woodland, no touches of color, no signs of life. Even the wind is absent. Silence, complete silence reigns.

Nervously, Sui Han darts her eyes around, the blood rushing to her head, ringing in her ears. Her breaths come in quick, labored spurts, as her pulse races with apprehension and inexplicable fear.

Then, through the thick cloak of silence, a soft moan floats across the barren land, its wailing so fleeting and yet heartbreakingly sad. A light breeze sweeps by, carrying the sound forward. Louder and louder it approaches, washing over Sui Han, drenching her with its melancholy melody, bringing tears to Sui Han’s eyes for some odd reason.

"Who is it? Who’s crying?" Sui Han calls out. "Whoever it is, please come out."

But the wailing only intensifies with Sui Han’s request.

As the sound fills the clearing, reverberating, Sui Han quickens her footsteps, scanning the area for any signs of movement. Running now, she heaves and puffs, her heart pounding with dread as the moan dies off, fading away with the last of the wind.

Silence once again envelops the barren land, suffocating and thick.

"Hello?" Sui Han whispers, almost afraid to speak too loudly. "Miss, are you still there? Miss?"

Absolute quietness greets her questions. A little uneasy, Sui Han nervously backs away, keeping a wary eye on her surroundings. "I don’t believe in ghosts. I don’t believe in ghosts." She chants over and over again, hoping to reassure herself. Swallowing her fear, she aimlessly wanders through the clearing, trying to find a way out and back to Lun.

Suddenly, the female voice returns, jolting Sui Han. This time, rather than a cry of sorrow, the wail crescendos louder and louder, filled with rage and fury. Above, the heavens open up, and rain pours down, furiously and rapidly, drenching Sui Han. The wind howls, whipping wildly with incontrollable madness, lashing out at Sui Han’s slim figure. The crying magnifies to deafening heights, like a monster overcome with insurmountable anger. And within that fury, a small touch of grief emerges and circles within the eye of the storm.

With wet strands of her hair slapping back and forth against her cheeks, Sui Han runs with hands cupped over her ears, attempting to block out the noise. But it seeps into her, settling itself there, refusing to leave.

As strong gusts of wind push Sui Han forward, she stumbles and trips. Pulling herself back up, she notices a large lake in the distance, the body of water incongruent with the sandy, rocky landscape. The waves roll and crash furiously, each current rising higher than the previous one, clutching at the air with its watery fingers, grappling and choking an invisible enemy.

Carried forward by the wind, Sui Han finds herself thrown against the banks of the lake. At that moment, the waves suddenly calm down and gently lap against the sand. Above, the downpour of rain transforms into a light drizzle. The wind dies off and again carries with it the tortured, angry wailings.

Panting, Sui Han crawls over to the lake and dips her hand into the cool water, intending to quench her parched throat. Surprised, she yelps and quickly withdraws her hand as an electrical shock rips up her arm.

The lake begins to bubble, rippling with rings and rings of concentric circles. From within the depths of the pool, a ray, blindingly bright, shoots upward. The light flashes a deep sapphire blue, and from within the core of that light, a sword leaps out, as if propelled by an invisible hand, and lands right next to Sui Han.

The sword glows a luminescent pale blue, its blade polished to a gleaming finish. Unsure of what to do, Sui Han sticks out a finger to poke at the sword hilt. Surprised when she encounters soothing coolness, she becomes more adventurous and wraps her hand completely around the hilt. Immediately, a feeling of rightness washes over her as she lifts the sword high up into the air. Above, the moon emerges from behind the dark clouds, its pale, silvery rays reflect off the sword’s blade, magnifying the metal’s bluish-gray tinge.

As Sui Han grips the sword tightly, a voice whispers softly in Sui Han’s mind. "Find him…find him…find him…" The voice breaks off into faint sobs. "Find him…find him…" It continues to echo. "Miss him so much…miss him so much…"

"Who’s there?" Sui Han asks, alarmed, as shivers once again trail down her spine.

When only silence answers, Sui Han shakes her head in confusion, wondering if this is all a strange dream. But the blue-tinged sword weighs heavily in her hands, a very real object proving that she is experiencing reality.

"I must be going crazy from exhaustion," Sui Han mutters to herself. "I’m hearing voices now. This is just great."

In the distance, a faint but familiar voice calls out her name. "Sui Han! Sui Han! Where are you?"

Sighing with exasperation, Sui Han plops down onto the rain dampened earth and lays the sword across her lap. "Terrific," she talks to herself grouchily. "Now this voice knows my name." Closing her eyes, she tries to block out the voice. "Just ignore it, and it will go away. My mind is hearing things, and if I refuse to acknowledge the voice, then the voice will disappear."

However, the voice continues to come closer, becoming louder and with more urgency. "Sui Han! Sui Han!"

Now recognizing the voice, Sui Han feels her heart sighing with relief. Leaping up, she runs toward the voice, dragging the sword with her.

A tall figure emerges from the dense forest, his features thrown into sharp relief against the pale moonlight. Smiling, the person hurries his footsteps toward Sui Han.

As Sui Han tears across the clearing toward the man, the sword vibrates almost violently in her hand, its blade gleaming with an otherworldly shimmer. Crashing into his arms, Sui Han hugs the man tightly, holding onto him for dear life.

When the man stiffens his back, Sui Han frowns and leans back to glance into his face. Staring into his blank, dazed eyes, she looks down and gasps in horror at the pool of red blossoming across his white gown, like a rapidly blooming scarlet flower. From the center of his abdomen, the sword protrudes, its bluish glow becoming brighter and fiercer as it thirstily drinks from its victim’s blood, feeding off of him voraciously.

"Sui Han..." Lun gasps in disbelief. "Why?"

Mouth wide open with shock, Sui Han shakes her head rapidly and backs away from Lun. Her mind numb, she unthinkingly yanks the sword along with her as she staggers backward. As the weapon leaves his abdomen, Lun screams in agony, as his wound pours fresh blood.

"First Young Master… I…I…" With her hands shaking, she focuses her horrified eyes on his wound, a wound she has created. "Oh, what have I done?!" She cries. Her heart aches with guilt as she helplessly watches him contort in pain. "I did not mean to. I…I don’t know what overcame me. I was running toward you one minute, and the next minute, you’re soaking with blood."

Looking down at the sword in her hand still dripping with Lun’s blood, Sui Han begins to sob. "I’m so sorry, First Young Master! I’m so sorry!"

In the far recesses of her mind, the soft voice starts chanting. "Miss him, miss him so much. Miss him, miss him so much. But he must die, he must die. Die…die…die…" The voice whispers in agony, weeping along with Sui Han.

Choking on her own sobs, Sui Han gasps. "It’s the sword, First Young Master! It’s the sword! I’m hearing voices! It’s making me hear voices." Turning terrified eyes toward Lun’s glazed ones, she takes a step forward, her arms reaching toward him beseechingly. "The sword is cursed." She whispers in a frightened, hoarse voice.

Dizzy with pain and blood loss, Lun stumbles about, trying to steady himself. Clutching at his wound, he feels his energy quickly draining away.

"First Young Master," Sui Han begins.

However, before she is able to take another step toward Lun, a gray blur flashes forward. In a matter of seconds, Sui Han feels the slap of a palm against her shoulder, sending her flying through the air.

The old woman from the village, the one who tried to kill her earlier, advances forward, the gleam in her eyes merciless. Quickly scrambling backward, Sui Han dodges the blow, only to see her opponent move with amazing speed and appear in front of her, delivering another blow to her chest. Spitting out a mouthful of blood, Sui Han feels her world spin uncontrollably.

In the background, Sui Han vaguely hears Lun’s voice, but her hazy mind cannot seem to focus enough to make out the words. In her peripheral vision, she sees a gray blur. Bracing herself, she prepares for another blow from the crazy old woman.

Squinting her eyes close, she waits. But the blow never comes, as Lun crawls over to the old woman as fast as he can and grabs onto her legs. "No, Elder! Please spare her life!"

"Let go, young man!" The old woman yells, struggling to remove her legs from Lun’s grasp. "Don’t you understand what is happening? She has only reunited with the Sword of Moon briefly, and yet, she has already injured you. We must put an end to her while her power is still weak, still young and immature." She wiggles her legs again, trying to dislodge Lun. However, he holds onto the old woman fiercely, his grip like steel despite his waning strength as blood continues to gush from his abdominal wound. "Let go, young man! I have to kill her NOW!"

    "No, Elder!" Lun begs.

Staring at Lun in disbelief, the old woman scolds at him. "Do you not value your own life? She tried to kill you!"

"No! It is an accident! Elder, don’t you see how tortured she is?" Lun pleads, gesturing toward a confused and shocked Sui Han. "She is my Sui Han, a sweet girl who does not deserve to die. Something must have happened to her while I was sleeping to cause her to act this way." Lun protests.

"She will no longer be your sweet Sui Han soon. Once the Sword of Moon takes control of her, she will stop at nothing to exact her revenge." Pausing, she glances down at Lun. "Don’t you recognize her in your dreams? Are you so quickly entranced by her beauty once again? Do you once more turn a blind eye to who she is, who she was?" Pointing a bony finger at Sui Han, who crouches a few paces away, hugging the Sword of Moon with a frightened look on her pale face. "She is an old spirit, one who returns from the past to haunt you."

"I don’t believe in old spirits and past vengeances. What kind of man am I if I allow you to harm an innocent girl because of some old tale that cannot be proven?" Lun retorts.

"Young man, you don’t know what you are talking about. You’ve lost a lot of blood and will continue to lose more if you don’t tend to your wounds now." The old woman harrumphs. "Now get out of my way!" With a forceful twist, she shakes free of Lun’s hold and somersaults into the air, her palm outstretched toward Sui Han.

Rolling out of the way, Sui Han dives to the right and runs toward Lun. "First Young Master!" As she screams, the old woman delivers a punch to her back, sending her flying through the air.

"Sui Han!" Lun calls out. Using what is left of his strength, he leaps up and catches Sui Han midair. Spinning around, he shields her and takes the brunt of the old woman’s attack.

Reaching behind him, he unstraps his sword tied to his back and swings it in a wide arc. The force of the swing brings sand and grit spinning into a mini tornado. While his opponent chokes and gags as the curtain of dust surrounds her and blocks her vision, Lun picks up Sui Han and dashes off.

The pale rays of the moon wash over the dirt path, lighting their way. As darkness engulfs the couple, the Sword of Moon dangles from Sui Han’s hand, its blade winking with a tinge of cool blue, as if taunting the old woman.

Behind them, the old woman calls after them. "Young man! Young man!" She gasps, coughing loudly, trying to clear the sand from her throat. With her eyes burning from the gritty sand, the old woman tries to peer into the darkness where Lun and Sui Han have disappeared. "Keep the sword away from her! Young man! Do you hear me?" When nothing but silence greets her warning, she sighs and shakes her head desolately. "Stubborn fellow! That girl is going to destroy him and he still thinks she is his best friend! Hmph! "

    MEANWHILE…
    WEST LAKE PROVINCE
    RED LANTERN INN

Trailing her hand lightly along the wall, Suk Yu makes her way slowly across the lobby of the inn. Pausing at the bottom of the winding stairwell, she listens carefully. Hearing the "click, click" of the abacus, she heads cautiously toward the direction of the sound, wanting to speak to the innkeeper.

"Excuse me, Sir." Suk Yu inquires politely, as she stops by the innkeeper’s desk. "Is there a place close by where I can purchase a horse?"

The elderly innkeeper glances up at Suk Yu and sets aside his abacus. "I’m sorry, Miss. It is already well past midnight. The nearest place where you can purchase a steed is closed for the evening, but it will reopen again two hours after dawn."

"Two hours past dawn?" Suk Yu asks, frowning. "I heard a couple of horses neighing outside by the inn’s stables earlier this evening. Would you consider selling me one of your steeds for my journey back home?" She reaches into her travel sack and presents a silver ingot to the innkeeper. "I will compensate you for your help."

The innkeeper stares longingly at the silver ingot, but regretfully shakes his head. "I apologize, Miss. The horses you hear do not belong to Red Lantern Inn. They actually belong to two of our guests." Glancing at the ingot again, he quickly offers, "Perhaps you could wait a few more hours until morning, and I can have one of our inn’s stable boys purchase a horse for you once the market opens?"

Sighing, Suk Yu shakes her head. "No, thank you, Sir. I do not wish to wait until morning. But I appreciate your help greatly." Placing the silver ingot on the desk, she smiles. "This is my room fare. I live in the corner room at the bottom of the stairwell."

Taking out his accounting book, the innkeeper flips through the pages and searches for Suk Yu’s room number. Then, looking back up at her, he replies, "Miss, the young man you arrived with earlier this evening has already paid in advance for your room."

Realizing that the elderly innkeeper is referring to Lap Chun, Suk Yu tightens her lips into a firm line. Still irate with him and Ching Bong for creating a ruckus earlier and ignoring her words of reason, as men tend to do when they are in the midst of a testosterone match, she refuses to stay and witness any more of their childish arguments and decides to travel the rest of the way back to Lam Mansion without Lap Chun.

"No, I wish to pay for my own room fare." She places the silver ingot onto the innkeeper’s desk firmly. When the elderly man starts to protest, she shakes her head resolutely and repeats, "Please, Sir, I wish to pay for my own room fare."

Sighing, the innkeeper nods. "As you wish, Miss."

Satisfied that she has won this small battle, Suk Yu swings the travel sack over her shoulder. "Sir, could you please direct me toward the City of Lam On?"

"Certainly, Miss." The innkeeper replies. "Just turn right when you leave the inn and keep on going eastward bound. You should reach the City of Lam On in approximately three days’ time on foot."

Thanking the innkeeper, Suk Yu slowly makes her way toward the front entrance of the inn.

As she disappears into the night, the innkeeper mumbles with confusion. "Women! Such stubborn and puzzling creatures." Thinking of Lap Chun, he speculates, "I wonder what that poor man has to do now to get himself back into her good graces. I guess I’m lucky that I have remained unmarried." Shrugging his shoulders, he turns back to his abacus and continues his bookkeeping task.

    ABOUT HALF AN HOUR LATER…
    WEST LAKE PROVINCE
TWO MILES FROM RED LANTERN INN

Steadily, Suk Yu walks along the deserted streets of West Lake Province, carefully staying on the cobblestone path so she would not get lost in some side alley. In the distance, she can hear the faint cooing of pigeons, the flutter of their wings.

An alley cat, his coat sleek black and glistening in the moonlight, darts out across Suk Yu’s path, chasing a panicky mouse. Stopping in the middle of the road, the cat stares at Suk Yu, his eyes glowing green in the night. Meowing loudly in greeting, he observes Suk Yu for a few seconds, all the while keeping the mouse trapped under his front paw. The mouse squeaks and struggles desperately. Wiggling, the small rodent manages to escape, scurrying furiously down a dark alley. Intent on retrieving his prey, the cat dashes off in hot pursuit.

As the cat disappears into the dark, silence again reigns over the streets of West Lake Province. Hearing the cat run off, Suk Yu sighs. "I guess every sane person is asleep at this hour except for me and the cat."

Cocking her head slightly, she listens closely. Hearing nothing but the quiet sound of her own breathing, Suk Yu runs her fingertips along the wall of a stone building. Guiding herself with her hands, she lowers herself onto the ground. Leaning against the wall, she closes her eyes. For a few minutes, Suk Yu stops to breathe in the fresh air, enjoying the crisp brush of the wind against her cheeks and reveling in the peaceful quietness of the night.

After a few blissful moments of solitude, she reluctantly opens her eyes. Hoping to reach another small town by daylight, Suk Yu pulls herself up. "Time to go." She murmurs. Slinging her travel sack over her shoulder, she sets off once more.

For the next half mile, she makes her way down the cobblestone streets of the town without interruption. Eventually, her booted feet encounter dirt, telling Suk Yu that she has probably reached the outskirts of West Lake Province, where the paths are no longer lined with cobblestones. Hearing the swish of leaves, she realizes that she has probably arrived at a dense grove of trees, most likely some sort of forest. As it would be more difficult to wander about in the forest during the night, especially since she is blind, Suk Yu decides to rest near the edge of the woodland for the remainder of the night.

Slowly, she leans forward slightly and reaches out, feeling the ground to make sure it is safe to sit on. Encountering soft earth and patches of dried leaves, Suk Yu settles herself down and places her travel sack on her lap. Folding her legs, she closes her eyes, prepared to rest for a few hours and to resume her journey at first daylight.

Minutes pass, but Suk Yu cannot fall asleep. Something unnerves her. Some nebulous voice within her warns her to stay alert. She listens carefully, but hears nothing but silence. However, unlike the comforting quietness she enjoyed earlier at West Lake Province, this silence ripples with sinister vibes.

Slowly and making as little noise as possible, Suk Yu stands up and cocks her head, concentrating on every minute sound. From the distance, she catches the slight swishing sound of tree leaves. Suk Yu’s heart quickens, her senses screaming danger. She knows that only a martial arts expert, someone with considerable internal energy and highly trained in lightness kung fu, is capable of moving rapidly through a forest full of leafy trees and yet causing almost no disturbance of the foliage.

Inching toward the direction of the noise, Suk Yu holds her jade flute in front of her, readying herself for combat. Hiding among a thicket of bushes, she holds her breath.

From within the depths of the forest, she hears footsteps approaching, each step light as a feather, as if the person is skimming over the ground. Curious, Suk Yu cranes her neck, attempting to get as close as possible without disclosing her location.

As the person lands onto the ground, the footsteps become more distinct, more easily heard. It is at that moment that Suk Yu’s heart stops. Surprised, she shakes her head slowly, recognizing those footsteps. Lowering her weapon, she nearly stands up, revealing her presence to the person, but stops herself just in time as the person laughs, releasing a sound so evil and malicious that she pauses.

"No," she murmurs quietly to herself. "I must be mistaken. This person is not someone I know." She tries to convince herself. "The person I know could not have laughed so villainously. Impossible!" She repeats in her mind over and over again. "But those footsteps sound so familiar. I know those footsteps anywhere as I have listened to them all my life! How could this be?" She argues with herself, unsure whether to believe her own ears or to trust her logic.

As Suk Yu puzzles over the issue of the newcomer’s identity, the person unwraps a long object strapped to his back, revealing the Sword of Sun. The sword shines brilliantly in the dark night, creating a sphere of blinding orange light.

Staring at the legendary weapon, the person’s eyes gleam greedily, the lust for power apparent as his lips stretch slowly into a feral smile. "Ha ha ha!" He chortles. "The sword is finally mine!" He exclaims, thrusting the blade high up into the air. "Ha ha ha!"

Suddenly, the person twists around, his eyes focusing sharply toward the thicket of bushes where Suk Yu hides. "Come out!" Lowering the sword slowly, he scans the area carefully.

Holding her breath, Suk Yu grips her flute tightly, preparing for an attack. As the person approaches, she tenses her muscles, ready to fight.

"Come out now…" The person in white whispers, his voice calm and deadly. "I know you are hiding in there…"

    Hi Melanie,

I am a new reader and I must tell you that the story and plot are just amazing. I finished all the chapters in one day. I was so captivated that my eyes are simply glued on to my computer screen and I wasn't content until I finished reading. Now the story is getting tense.......and more suspense. I hope you will write more of Ekin Cheng a.k.a The White Executioner and Gong Yu please as I find they have wonderful chemistry and she deserve to find love at last eventhough she cannot see him.

I am waiting anxiously to see who the "Master" is too. Nice plot as you manage to keep your readers interested. Now I cannot wait to find out the remaining chapters.

BRAVO and please do write on. I am a sucker for happy endings and love so I hope your ending will be such........

Yay, a new chapter. Thanks Melanie. I've found every one of your chapter enjoyable so far. I usually don't read fanfiction much, but when I tried yours at the start I had to keep reading. And I only said what you deserve to hear. I'll have to read your PM now and also this next part of the story.

    Hi Melanie,

I am checking every two days to see if you have posted new chapters. I hope you will continue to write and keep on intriguing us readers with your plots and twists. I can't help re-reading some of the chapters. You have managed to bring to life the "actors" and "actresses" in your story. Not many writers have this ability. I particularly like your work because I am a great fan of ancient movies and film series and a great admirer of thos "older" generation actros and actresses.

My favourite characters and couples in your story are Andy Lau and Idy Chan, Ekin and Gong Yu and of course Gilbert and Annie. I hope you will pair Louis with someone worthwhile. I quite like dark looking men. And Louis is kind of cute. It'll be a pity if he ended up all alone and sad

It was an excellent idea of yours to potray Steve Ma as the Blue Diamond rapists. I also found it refreshing that you have sort of trigger the possibility that Yik Hong (the second son to the Lam's) could still be alive after 20 years!!!!!! And when you "killed" Chi Chi, I thought "oh no......" Annie's character is very mysterious as I am still unable to comprehend if she loves Gilbert more or Louis. Maybe both? Why not eh?

But please do write more on Ekin and Gong Yu. I want to see her reaction when she is able to see Ekin for the first time and fall in love with him. I could feel their chemistry.....

CONTINUE WRITING MELANIE. You have at least one more ardent reader here!!!!!!

    Hi Lovely Maiden,

Hi and thanks for reading my story. And I especially appreciate the long comments. It's always great to know that someone is following the story so closely. I started writing a few pages of the next chapter, but it is not complete yet. I am actually pretty tired lately, but will use whatever free time I have to finish the story. It's been 4 years, I think, since I started the story and it has dragged on for long enough. I want to wrap it up and start another story.

I'm not surprised that you like Gong Yu. She seems to be a favorite in the story. Either the actress Yeung Gong Yu has lots of fans who leave comments, or the character of Gong Yu is very likeable. Either way, my lips remain sealed on who gets the happy ending and who dies in the end. I've always warned readers in the past, though, that I tend to kill off people you least expect to die.

Sui Han likes both Tin Lok and Wai Sun. She started out just liking Tin Lok, but as she spends more and more time together with Wai Sun, she is beginning to soften toward him. We will have to wait to see who she ultimately chooses. I beleive that as long as a girl is single, she still has the freedom to change her mind, especially if someone better comes along, ya?

It's interesting that you mention Blue Executioner. Not a lot of people pay attention to him, since he's a secondary character. I have seen Steve Ma Tsing Tao in some Taiwanese series and thought he would look real good with an evil laugh. Red Executioner, who is also one of the Master's goons, seems to attract less attention and wrath compared to Blue Executioner.

Anyway, I have to go. Will post as soon as I have the next chapter done. Feel free to leave comments if you have any thoughts or suggestions you want to discuss with me.

    Hi Melanie,

Do not overtaxed yourself. What's important to us readers is that you are well and energized enough to complete this story to a satisfactory ending. If an ending is too predicatable then it will boring won't it? So, do keep your readers on an edge. Actually I do not know many of your characters that well. The reason why I like Gong Yu so much (never seen her act prior to this) is that her character is so feminine, gentle, soft - the kind of women that men would cherish and protect with their lives. Small wonder that she is the fav.

Like I said, you managed to bring to life all your characters. Indeed, it was a brilliant idea to potray Steve Ma as a villain as he was way too good in all his movies and series. In the past, nearly all stories and series that I have seen, have not-so-good-looking rapists. Some are even odious and fat! Why do rapists have to be fat and ugly? So, its a novelty to have (for once) a rapist, while not that likeable in terms of character and personality, is in fact, fairly good looking. As I read your stories, I could imagine all the scenarios, action and the feeling just like as if I watched the series on tv.

I have always admired Idy Chan's gracefulness (from her role as Xiao Long Nu). I especially love women who can fight. I am not a fan of Ekin Cheng actually but I like him here (just as I did Gong Yu). So gallant, handsome & possessed powerful martial art. And, I especially like men in white! Don't ask me why. Does Gong Yu never wonder what he looked like? I mean, if I am blind, got stuck in the middle of nowhere with a man, I would wonder what he looks like. Is he married? Is he handsome? Is he tall? Fat? I mean, you never know right?

As for Sui Han, you are right. While a women is still single she is free to choose. Either one is not bad since both are good looking chap. It was a good idea of yours to bring forward Gong Yu's old flame the Marquis thus sparking jealousy from the White Executioner. Serve the Marquis right for dumping her in the first place for power and prestige!!!! Does that mean that the Yee Kin likes Gong Yu then? I mean, he was a little jealous right? Melanie, why don't you add a kissing scene between Gong Yu and Ekin? And the other characters?

I did not pay that much of an attention to the Red Executioner because of his secondary role. I can only ever see him as the Master's loyal and faithful henchman. To be quite honest, I wasn't expecting the Silver Executioner to die so quickly but her death does add to the whole mystery and excitement. Nothing is predictable in your story. So there are always suspense....... I am waiting to see who stole the Sword of Sun. I am guessing its Andy (Gong Yu's father) but hope it isn't as I like him a lot but maybe you have a hidden character who isn't out yet?

I am anxiously waiting for the outcome :
    • who the Master is,
    • if Yik Hong is still alive
    • and if he is, who is he?
    • where is Chi Chi?
    • her outcome with Ka Wing?
    • just how powerful is Ka Wing's kung fu?
    • when Gong Yu be able to see
    • who stole the Sword of Sun
    • Who is Sui Han's godfather?
I will remain an ardent reader of yours and am waiting impatiently for your next chapters. You know what? You should really approach TVB with your story and get them to turn this into a real movie. I am sure many other readers have suggested the same. BRAVO Melanie.
