CHAPTER 22 --- TWO TIGERS IN ONE CAVE

Recap:

Cheng Sai Chung was first introduced in chapter 2. He was briefly mentioned as Sui Han's Big Brother Sai Chung, a good friend in her village who protected her when she lost her family. Assumed by Sui Han to be murdered by mountain robbers in her village, he later reappears in chapter 17. It seems that former Royal Physician Chun Ying has rescued him while passing through that village and has nursed him back to health. Sai Chung currently helps out in Chun Ying's Wind Rain Restaurant, which happens to be across the street from the Golden Phoenix Inn.

In chapter 14, Sui Han's identity as the Seer (the one with the gift of sight) was first revealed. Lam Siu Tin and Chan Yin Yuk are currently on a search for the Seer, per their teacher's orders. However, they still do not realize that their servant, Sui Han, is the mysterious Seer they are after. The Seer's background will gradually unravel as the story progresses.

Last chapter, Sui Han witnesses the killing of an innocent baby, an event so traumatic that it pulls her back into a flashback of her past life as the Seer. Trapped in her trance, she lashes out at the assassins. The story continues from that point…

Characters appearing in this chapter:
Annie Man Chung Han---So Sui Han
Felix Wong Yat Wah---gentleman at tea stand
Gilbert Lam Wai Sun---Lam Yik Lun
Louis Koo Tin Lok---Koo Yat Fei
Gigi Lai Chi---Lam Chi Chi
Kevin Cheng Ka Wing---Cheng Sai Chung

THE FOREST IN THE OUTSKIRTS OF THE CITY OF HOI YEUNG

Shrieking in fury, Sui Han begins to tremble uncontrollably, as if an unknown force has taken over her body. Intending to finish her off, the leader with the red sash flies straight toward her. As the leader draws near, Sui Han whips her head around and stares at him, her eyes dilating into huge pools of swirling fire glowing brilliantly in the dark. This inhuman and deathly light stops the leader in his tracks. In his one moment of hesitation, Sui Han focuses her eyes on his, her eyes emitting a strange and otherworldly energy. Within seconds, the leader drops onto the ground, his hands covering his face, as he hollers in agony, his eyes burning as if a thousand knives have pierced his eyeballs.

From the depths of the forest, the Master (the figure in white) watches this scene in horrified shock.

Master whispers to himself, petrified. "The Seer… She is the Seer…"

Thunder roars ominously, ringing loudly through the heavens, its sound nearly blocking out the screams of the men twisting in agony on the earth below as they clutch at their eyes in pain. As if to accentuate their screams, lightning streaks across the night sky, flashing eerily through the forest, clearly illuminating the horrific expressions on the black-clothed men's faces. Rain continues to pour, pounding mercilessly onto the humans, attacking their skin like sharp, fine needles.

Hidden in the dark depths of the forest, the Master watches like a silent predator, waiting, planning his next move. With his attention transfixed on the intense, fiery red glow shining brightly in Sui Han's eyes, he smiles slyly before waving his hand in front of himself. In a puff of smoke, he disappears from sight.

Below on the ground, the leader with the red waist sash manages to scramble to his feet by holding onto the large boulder close by. Clutching at the rock for support, he rushes off as quickly as possible, with a few of his surviving men straggling behind.

Ignoring the escaping men in black, Sui Han crawls slowly toward the body of the dead baby, her head throbbing in pain from her wound, her eyes, swirling wildly, stare blindly ahead. As she nears the infant, she reaches out a hand and strokes the baby's soft downy skin, her face expressionless, trance-like. Suddenly her vision grays and she loses consciousness, her body flopping next to the infant's body in a twisted heap.

In the background, the rain continues its onslaught, relentlessly soaking the forest, drenching the bodies scattered on the ground. Despite the heavy pattering of rain and the echoes of thunder, an eerie silence descends upon the woodland, as if paying solemn respect to the dead after witnessing the killings that have occurred.

MEANWHILE…
IN A CAVE SEVERAL MILES FROM THE FOREST

A small fire crackles cheerily, bravely attempting to ward off the chill in the spacious cave. Its flames flicker and wave like arms, reaching out to gather the cave's occupants in its warm embrace.

Standing at the entrance of the cave, the gentleman at the tea stand stares out into the dark expanse of night, lost in his thoughts as he gently grasps a piece of jade in his right hand, his fingers tracing the delicate etchings on the cold stone.

Behind him, Lun and Fei, sitting cross-legged side by side near the warmth of the fire, meditate to heal their injuries. The firelight dances wildly, casting odd shadows across their faces, outlining their masculine features in the darkened cavern.

Both men possess their own brand of charisma, each unique and attractive in his own way. Lun looks the part of the gentleman scholar, with his tall stature and princely air. He appears composed and expressionless, but his eyes could turn coldly furious within a matter of seconds when angered. Fei, on the other hand, possesses darkly handsome looks and exudes a dangerously magnetic aura with his intense stares filled with raging fire and passion.

As they continue to meditate, the cave begins to warm up from the heat generated by the energy field surrounding both men as they gather and transform their inner strength into a healing force field. Beads of perspiration collect damply on their foreheads, glistening translucently in the firelight. A reddish halo surrounds Lun and Fei, and smoke rises from the top of their heads as they spin slowly in a circle.

But the poison proves to be too strong, an unknown strain that seems to dig its roots deeper into the victim as he tries to use his inner strength to force the poison out. Suddenly, both men spit out mouthfuls of blood, which immediately congeal into dark, violet pools on the stone floor. Forced to break off from their meditation, Lun coughs violently while Fei clutches at his heart in pain.

The gentleman from the tea stand flips into the air, kicks against the sides of the cave, and flies toward the two injured men, slapping his palms forcefully onto their backs. With his left palm against Fei's back and his right palm against Lun's, the gentleman transfers his internal energy to them.

Fei and Lun's faces alternate between shades of red and blue as the poison travels throughout their bodies, surging upward from the center of their core toward the mouth. Sweating profusely and with veins standing prominently against the muscular column of their necks, all three men concentrate on combining their internal energy to force the poison out.
Finally, after ten minutes of intense effort, Fei and Lun spit out more mouthfuls of blood. From behind, the gentleman executes a back flip and lands in sitting position right onto a huge rock shaped like a throne at the far end of the cave.

Breathing heavily from the exertion, Lun reaches up to wipe the trickle of blood at the corner of his mouth. Beside him, Fei looks curiously at his rescuer as he dabs at the perspiration on his forehead with his sleeve. As both stumble unsteadily to their feet, they turn toward the gentleman, who lounges comfortably on the throne-like rock, his presence exuding confidence and authority.

Lun puts his hands together in a gesture of respect. "Hero, thank you for helping us."

Fei follows Lun's gesture. "May we have your name, so that we may repay you some day?"

The gentleman waves his hand in a careless gesture. "There is no need to repay me. Even though I have helped clear some of the poison from your bodies, a fair amount of the venom still remains." He tilts his head slightly, pondering the origin of the poison. "This is a strange type of poison that I am unfamiliar with. I can only aid both of you to this point. You will need the help of someone more knowledgeable than I in medicinal arts to help you completely rid your bodies of the venom. I suggest that you both refrain from using your internal energy if possible to prevent the poison from invading your vital organs."

Lun nods his head in acknowledgement. "Thank you, Hero, for your advice."

The gentleman chuckles to himself as he shakes his head amusingly. "I saw you two young rascals rush by the tea stand earlier. For some reason, you two remind me of myself in my younger days…so rash, so bold, and so fearless."

The gentleman pauses, his thoughts wandering as he reminiscences. Absentmindedly, as if by habit, he reaches for the jade pendant inside his pocket. Holding it carefully in his hand like a precious commodity, he gently traces the faint lines on the back of the jade, which form a single Chinese character. Sighing softly, his eyes become unfocused as he relives his past, a longing look on his face.

Outside their shelter, thunder rumbles, accompanied immediately by the howling of the wind. Sprinkles of rain splatter onto the cave's floor near the entrance. A low-hanging tree branch nearby whips at the cave mouth, banging loudly with each gust of wind, flinging wet droplets of moisture into the crackling fire.

Shaking himself out of his reverie, the gentleman lovingly wraps the red tassel hanging from one end of the pendant around the jade and carefully places it in his pocket. Noticing the two young men staring at him curiously, he clears his throat self-consciously and walks toward the entrance. Halting near the cave opening, he speaks, his back still turned to Lun and Fei.

The gentleman, in a contemplative voice, advises, "Don't be too rash like I was, or you will make mistakes that you will regret for the rest of your life."
With those parting words of wisdom, he flies out into the dark, stormy night and disappears from sight, leaving Lun and Fei to stare at the cave entrance in confusion.

Without their rescuer's presence to act as a buffer, Lun and Fei eye each other suspiciously in the awkward silence. Still in pain from the poison and somewhat weakened, both stagger gingerly over to opposite sides of the cave, settling themselves down onto the cold, damp ground.

Glaring at Lun murderously, Fei folds his legs and leans against the wall.
Insolently, Lun coldly returns Fei's stare, refusing to back down in this glaring contest.

On his end of the cave, Fei twists his mouth into a sneer, his expression darker than the thunderclouds looming outside. Chuckling mockingly at Fei, Lun tilts his head in a challenging manner, as he crosses his arms across his chest.

Lun smirks at Fei. "I wouldn't glare so much if I were you. Your eyes might permanently bulge out."

After imparting that taunt, Lun turns his attention to the pouring rain outside, willing his strength to return quickly so that he could return to Sui Han. Worried that she might be wandering around alone in the dark looking for him, he unconsciously clenches his fists.

Fei, his jaw muscle ticking in suppressed anger, observes Lun's actions closely. Following Lun's gaze outside the cave, Fei correctly guesses that his enemy's thoughts are on Sui Han. Furious at the mere thought of HIS Sui Han being another man's object of affection, Fei makes a move to lunge toward Lun, but the pain shooting up his spine causes him to sit back down, his teeth clenched together to prevent himself from screaming out in pain.
Unconcernedly observing Fei's failed attempt to attack him, Lun snorts at the other man's folly. As the storm continues to rage outside, both men sit in the damp shelter, glaring at each other, one with fury painted all over his face, the other looking calm, cold, and indifferent.

MEANWHILE…
BACK AT THE GOLDEN PHOENIX INN
IN THE ROOM SHARED BY SUI HAN AND LUN

Chi Chi, still dressed up as a man, sits at the table, her fingers tapping the tabletop impatiently as she waits for Sui Han's return. Suddenly, unable to stand the suspense any longer, she slaps the tabletop in frustration before jumping up. Rushing to the door, she opens it slowly and peeks outside, hoping to catch a glimpse of either Sui Han or Lun. Seeing the empty hallway, Chi Chi sighs loudly and looks up at the ceiling briefly before dropping her chin dejectedly down onto her chest.

With her head still down, she trudges reluctantly back to the chair and plops down, pouting. Unable to remain still, she immediately pops back up and proceeds to pace the floor, muttering to herself.

Chi Chi gnaws on her bottom lip. "Where are they??? Sui Han said to meet back here in two hours, but where is she? And where is Eldest Brother?"
Suddenly, she stops pacing, her eyes enlarging in shock as a new thought enters her mind.

Chi Chi covers her mouth with her hand, her eyes bulging. "What if they are in danger? What if they are surrounded by enemies and cannot escape? What if they are DEAD???"

With this last horrifying thought, Chi Chi runs quickly to the door and flings it open, intending to go search for Sui Han and Lun. Charging blindly out into the hallway, she runs smack into a young man carrying a large tray containing several bowls of steaming chicken rice porridge.

The unexpected impact causes both parties to fall inelegantly onto the floor, arms and legs tangled together. Pieces of ceramic scatter on the wooden floor, with small pools of porridge littering the area. One hardy bowl, only slightly chipped at the corner, rolls lazily toward the stairs before beginning its descent down toward the hotel's first floor.

Gasping in horror at the huge sticky stain on front of her borrowed gown, Chi Chi, her eyes round with shock, looks down at herself before glaring venomously at the flustered young man. Picking the wet fabric off her chest delicately with her thumb and index finger, she points indignantly at herself with her other hand.

Chi Chi, in a huffy voice, scolds the young man. "Look what you did! Now I am a mess!"

Stuttering a bit, Cheng Sai Chung immediately scrambles toward Chi Chi, apologizing profusely. "I am so sorry, Sir! I didn't expect you to suddenly barge out of your room!"

Sai Chung, who was sent over by the Wind Rain Restaurant owner to make deliveries, looks at the spilled porridge on the floor worriedly. Hearing Chi Chi mutter disgustedly, he returns his attention back to her. Hoping to make amends, he rushes over, helps her to her feet, and attempts to brush off the specks of rice clinging to the front of her gown, not knowing that she is a lady.

Gasping indignantly, Chi Chi slaps away his roving hands.

Chi Chi bares her teeth at him. "What do you think you are doing???"

Puzzled as to why a man would be so squeamish and thinking that "he" prefers a handkerchief, Sai Chung hurriedly pulls one out of his pocket and clumsily brushes it at Chi Chi's chest. Her eyes wide with shock and disbelief at such blatant forwardness, Chi Chi pushes his hands away and proceeds to randomly hit his chest with her hands.

Chi Chi shrieks indignantly, as she continues her relentless attack. "You pervert! How dare you! How dare you touch me!"

Still unaware that she is female, Sai Chung backs away from her in confusion, his arms covering his face protectively as he tries to evade her slaps.

Angrily advancing forward, Chi Chi corners Sai Chung against the end of the hallway. Sai Chung, bewildered with his mouth hanging open, stares at Chi Chi warily, his shoulders hunched up protectively in preparation for the next assault.

Sai Chung gulps nervously. "Sir, I am only trying to help you clean your gown." He tries to reason with her. Handing her his handkerchief, he tries to plaster himself against the wall so that he is as far away from Chi Chi as possible. "Here, maybe you would like to clean your gown yourself?"

Grabbing the handkerchief from him, Chi Chi slaps him across the cheek.

Chi Chi glares at him threateningly. "Hmph!"

Walking back into Sui Han and Lun's room in a huff, she slams the door close, leaving Sai Chung in the hallway, still squeezed up against the corner. Just when he is about to breathe a sigh of relief, the door to the room flings open, and Chi Chi stomps out again.

Stalking up to Sai Chung, eyes glaring murderously at him, Chi Chi goes up on tiptoes and sticks her face close up to his. Wagging her finger warningly in front of his nose, she threatens him. "Don't let me see you again!!! Or the next time, you won't be so lucky!" She emphasizes each word by jabbing her finger into Sai Chung's chest.

Backing away a little from him, Chi Chi then delivers a solid kick to his shin, causing the confused Sai Chung to hunch over in pain and surprise.
Finished with her assault, Chi Chi, with her nose turned up in the air, mutters patronizingly. "Hmph! Take that!"

Satisfied that she has punished him adequately, she marches triumphantly back to her room and slams the door shut, leaving Sai Chung gasping in the hallway.

TWO HOURS LATER…
THAT SAME NIGHT
BACK AT THE FOREST

The wind continues to howl, whistling an errant tune as it sweeps through the gaps in the thick blanket of leaves covering the forest. The rain has calmed down to a light drizzle, delicately sprinkling the earth with its soft spray. Droplets of moisture trickle down the maple leaves, leaving wet tracks on the leaf surface before plopping loudly onto the bodies sprawled on the damp earth. Other than the sound of wind and rain, silence reigns through the night.

Into this deathly silence, two humans enter, their footsteps making light splashes in the large muddy puddles. Slowly, the humans creep forward, surveying the carnage in front of them. Nodding to each other, they separate to opposite sides of the wide area littered with bodies. Carefully, they tour around, checking on each body for a neck pulse.

The person in green approaches Sui Han and places two fingers on her neck. Suddenly, the person in the green gown turns around and calls out to the other person. "This one is still alive!"

Trotting over to Sui Han and his companion, the person in blue crouches down and checks her pulse and then places an index finger horizontally under her nose, checking for the presence of air movement. Nodding, the man in the blue gown agrees, "Yes, she is still alive…barely though."

Handing his sword over to his companion, the person in blue lifts Sui Han up into his arms and carries her off into the night…

Thumbs up

Yay!!!! A story about Gilbert Lam and Annie Man. Thank you so much, Melanie. I adore this couple so much ever since I watched Heroine of the Yang I and II. They had so much chemistry in there and i was praying that they would end up together. I believe that i woudl have fly to Hong Kong and chop up the producer' s house if they had not end up with each other in part II. A little bit obsessive, i know.
Anyway, after much ranting, I am very much looking forward to read your fanfic. I have a break ahead of me so very much looking forward to burning my eyes out. Will be back to comment on your undoubtedly fabulous story, only have a chance to read your first chapter, which was truly wonderul.
Well, i am off on my journey of reading.
Will be back,
Tu Vi
Though I am old with wandering
Through hollow lands and hilly lands,
I will find out where she has gone,
And kiss her lips and take her hands;
And walk among long dappled grass,
And pluck till time and times are done,
The silver apples of the moon,
The golden apples of the sun.

To all my readers: I have discovered that writing in novel format allows the story to flow more smoothly. Hence, I will be revising my story from script format to novel format, so please be patient while this process is underway. No changes to storyline will be made. Hopefully, you all will find the novel form of this story a more pleasurable read.

Danielle: Ha! I never realized you could talk so much. You were really quiet and reserved when you first commented on my story many months ago.

Tu Vi: Wow. I can't help but be flattered that such an accomplished wuxia fanfic writer is reading this story. Thank you. I am also a crazy Annie and Gilbert fan. Believe me, I am many times more obsessive than you. You should see me talking to myself in the Gilbert Lam thread. Anyway, I look forward to hearing from you again. Please do not hesitate to offer me suggestions on how to improve my story.

I will not be discussing the characters’ backgrounds, but only my analysis of the characters. Here it is in a nutshell:

The first thing about Melanie’s fan fiction, Legendary Book of Sun-Moon Swordplay, which amazed me, was her writing. Her word choice made it easier for the readers to visualize the story. This story has everything, comedy, love, good versus evil, pride, suspense, all the elements for a great prose. When I first read this, I thought the dialogue format was awkward, but after reading several chapters, I became accustomed to it. I prefer the novel type format because it bestows the prose professionalism, but this is a fan fiction. Melanie's writing is so good that a novel type format would definitely display her true potential. Nevertheless, the story is very well planned out and organized, a truly laudable work. Keep up the good work, sweetie.

Lam Tak Wah- This character is a typical “xia” in wuxia stories. A character that holds superb honor and pride, one that is out for just and good. Lam Tak Wah serves a similar role as Kwok Jing in ROCH. In ROCH, Kwok Jing is wiser and a settled man. Both men are lovely husbands and fathers, whom calmness and maturity shine out, showing their wisdom. As evidenced, Lam Tak Wah is willing to give it all for love. Like most wuxia heroes, he does not want powers; avarice will only lead to a tragedy.

Wong Seung- This character has only appeared a few times. A powerful, noble king, who let go of the woman he loved the most because they weren’t meant to be. It’s interesting how Wong Seung will fit into the story and how Wai Sun and Wong Sueng would react to the truth of their relationship.

Chan Kwai Fei- A faithful wife and a loving mother. She epitomizes what an ancient woman, and modern, should be. She possesses the elegance of a lady and amplifies the importance of listening to the heart through her departure with Lam Tak Wah. I especially love that part when she and Tak Wah were in a boat; the antics between the two were very heartwarming, revealing their everlasting love.

Wai Sun- There is no swordsman that can suppress love. The quote, “A man who fears nothing loves nothing,” proven to be true. Wai Sun holds a very serious, mature personality before Sui Han came into his life. He becomes paranoid and worries lovingly about her. To me, Wai Sun is a little cocky of his prowess. He doesn’t give me the impression of a “xia”. A “true” swordsman is confident and calm but never gloats.

Sui Han- This character is a mystery. I am very eager to find out about her past. I got the impression she is a fragile, powerless lady, but she is definitely tough. She must have gone through many hardships in the past to react such a way like she did when seeing the master about to kill the baby. I think she’s really fragile inside, all girls are. They want to be comforted and loved and cared for.

Lam Mun Lung- At first, I thought he may be a deceiving person. He acted very suspicious when Sui Han was brought home by Wai Sun and he was cold to Wu Hung Yee, the servant. But he is not like I thought; he gives out a stalwart appearance, a hero.

Lam Gong Yu- She’s one of my favorite characters. Like her mother, she is elegant. The only thing she lacks is a sense of humor. I feel like there is something hidden about her. Her calmness spreads tranquility into the atmosphere while spawning her a sad, lonely look. We see her later on became very afraid when she couldn’t see. I think Ekin’s character, or Ekin himself, would make a good couple with Gong Yu.

Lam Chi Chi- A zany, joyous, and fun girl. Chi Chi is the comic relief of the story, and may I say a very cute one. Her role is essential to the story, one that causes conflicts. She brings innocence and a happy atmosphere into the story. She needs a secure, easygoing hero to be by her side, a powerful martial artist. Cheng Ka Wing ‘s, Sui Han’s big brother, encounter with Chi Chi was very cute. He seems to be the caring kind, but Chi Chi needs also intelligence, coolness, and maturity along with that.

Koo Tin Lok- Jealousy and anger bubble in him, showing characteristics of a tragic character. Even though he acts in haste, he possesses qualities of a true martial artist. He wasn’t willing to lose and he put matters aside when he and Wai Sun encounter trouble. It would be interesting if Wai Sun and him can become friends, but that is out of the question due to his stubbornness.

Koo Ho Man- The pervert. This guy would do anything to achieve his goal. He’s one to hate. Enough said.

I guess you read more into the story and characters than I did. You managed to put into words what I was feeling toward the characters. Good job! Maybe you should be a movie/story critic. Just a thought. Hehehehe.

Cool

Tweety, I didn't con him into anything. Gee, you make me sound like the wicked witch of the west who has cast a spell on him. Swisher gave me those wishes of his own free will. By the way, it's back up to 10 wishes, because he said he won't count the other 2 wishes that were used up.
