I kinda like Yeung Kwok Fung as he already appears: kind, thoughtful, dutyful. He's already the reluctant leader of the Wah San Sect. Any more ambitious makes him look pretty bad imo. He seems to be a mixture of both happiness and sadness. That continued theme may make his character even more interesting. A complex love story like that in Legend of Book and Sword may prove interesting.

.: Chapter 8 : Hidden Goals, Hidden Skills :.

A gentle breeze swayed through the trees as leaves scattered about from the force. It was a beautiful spring day without a cloud in the sky. But, not all was as serene in the Lost Woods. In the distance, a sword blade could be heard slashing through the air. Flashes of light were everywhere as the sword reflected the bright sun’s rays. A young maiden of eighteen was practicing her sword skills. Her stance was elegant, beautiful and refined, yet her sword strokes were extremely fast and precise.

Suddenly she struck at a tree with her palm. The tree shook violently as hundreds of leaves began to fall. With perfect precision and quickness, not a single leaf touched her. She avoided each leaf as though they were individual attacks from her opponent. Leaves that came close to touching her as they fell were swiftly cut in half, while she nimbly dodged the rest. She summoned her internal energy and directed it towards her sword, sending the leaves that remained flying off towards the tree. These soft leaves suddenly became deadly projectiles, easily scarring the tree with marks as it cut through its bark.

Using her Lightness Kung Fu, she ran up the side of a tree, quickly kicking off to soar through and above the tree's branches. She then ran from treetop to treetop, across the forest’s canopy, as though it was the ground. In no time, she had reached another part of the forest. She flew through a thicket of bamboo. Her sword strokes were so fast that she and the sword were a blur. Once through, she then flipped and landed several meters away from the bamboo trees. She turned and watched as each shoot of bamboo fell one by one to the ground.

Twelve long years had passed and the once little Wai Ming was now a beautiful young lady. Her smile was like rose buds blooming in spring and her cheerful presence brought pleasure to those around her. Yet there was still something that often managed to make her frown in misery. Refreshing her thirst at the Reunion Waterfall, her gaze followed a small flock of ducks flying above in the distance.

‘My family and I were once like that family of ducks. Always together,' thought Wai Ming to herself as she continued to watch the ducks fly gracefully and gradually out of her view.

Soon, she found herself deep in thought while remembering all that took place after the event that changed her life. A month after she was taken away to live with the Lam Family, she was told that her mother’s body had mysteriously disappeared from the scene of her death. She wondered if the people who had killed her mother had also taken the body. But, what would they have done with a lifeless corpse? Someone else must have taken her body some time after the fight. Could it have been her father? No, it couldn’t have been because Wai Ming’s aunt had found a ripped piece of clothing that belonged to her father by the cliff’s edge. Her father must’ve had died along with her mother.

Her sister, Wai Ying, was injured by a woman called Bak Bing Sau. At the age of six, she didn’t understand much, but the images of losing her family members never left her. Upon being taken in by her aunt, her only real family left was her big sister. Her goal then was to find her and to be reunited with her as family again. The only problem was that she knew her aunt would never let her leave the Lost Woods alone at such a young age. Wai Ming thought of asking Lam Ting Yip, her new friend, to help her leave the Lost Woods. But, since the recent disappearance of his father, his mother would become even more disheartened if they both were to leave. Wai Ming didn’t have the heart to ask Ting Yip and thought of giving up.

That is until this one particular evening, after sunset. Wai Ming had found herself trapped in an apple tree because of her craving for apples. To make matters worse, lightening was flashing across the dark purple sky, followed directly afterwards by crashes of thunder. Being that she was only an eight year old girl, she wept and cried for help. She closed her eyes and winced at the mighty sound of thunder and then she heard a crisp sound of a leaves being rustled from behind her. She then felt two strong hands grab her, then lifting her from the tree. A cool breeze blow across her face as her hero flew down from the tree branch.

As she opened her eyes slowly, she noticed she was in the arms of a mysterious looking man. He wore a light brown robe and a mask that covered the bottom half of his face. Except for his pair of dark brown eyes and his nose, he was concealed from head to toe. Neither the man nor Wai Ming spoke a word as he carried her through the windy weather as a thunderstorm continued to brew. The mysterious man brought her to a cave just in time to shelter them from the pouring rain. Aside for the occasional cracks and snaps from the bonfire made by the man to keep them warm, it remained silent in the cave.

Wai Ming was initially surprised by the stranger, but not in the least afraid of him.

“Mister, thank you for saving me,” said Wai Ming, finally breaking the long silence between them.

The man simply continued to keep his back towards her as he watched the raindrops fall outside. He was taken aback when Wai Ming called him Mister, but in his present state of condition, any name or form of address would do. Two hours had gone by and it was still raining, but the thunder seemed to have died off. However, a different noise could now be heard coming from Wai Ming’s stomach. The mysterious man sat near her and passed a cloth pouch, which contained some buns for her to eat.
Despite the silent, cold and distant impression that the masked man gave, he was very caring and nurturing towards the eight year old Wai Ming. After waiting for the rain to finally stop, Wai Ming had grown tired of the silence and decided to talk to the stranger. The man seemed almost reluctant to speak, but after Wai Ming shared some of her stories of her little adventures in the woods, he began to open up and spoke to her. After the two had talked for a long while, it was clear that they were developing a friendship -- one between the young Wai Ming and the much older stranger. In time, it seemed to be more like a family kinship rather than a mere friendship. So when the man offered to teach Wai Ming kung fu, she kindly accepted because she knew that the only way Aunt Sou Ching would ever allow her to leave the forest was if she knew enough kung fu to fend for herself.

For the pass eleven years, Wai Ming met her sifu each evening, secretly after sunset. She often wondered why her sifu would want their meetings to be in secret and why she was to keep it a secret even from her aunt and Ting Yip. When she would ask, he would always tell her that it was not humble to show off knowledge of kung fu to others; that a swordsman must always be modest; and that even if they do good deeds for others, they must never ask for repayment.

Yet there were still questions in her mind left unanswered. However, as an obedient student, she dared not ask too many questions of him. She only assumed that he was a loner that only wanted to teach her to become a humble person and not to become an arrogant one by keeping her lessons and their master-disciple relation secret. So deep in her thoughts of the events of the past several years in the Lost Forest, it was only when a small rabbit had hopped onto her lap that she was waken from her daydream.

“Hmm... a little rabbit! What are you doing here?” she asked as she held the rabbit up by it’s ears and into her arms. Then she noticed a scarlet red stain on the rabbit’s foot.

“Aww... little rabbit, you’re hurt. Don’t worry. I’ll bring you home with me and tend to your wound,” Wai Ming said as she picked up a basket of medicinal herbs she collected earlier, placing her arm through the strap and the basket on her back.
On her way into the front yard of the bamboo house, she hid her sword in one of the hollow stalks of bamboo which fenced their way around the house, securing it like a fortress. She then approached the doorway of her home. With the small rabbit cradled in her arm, she slowly removed the basket from off her back just as a young man in his mid-twenties, clad in a dark green robe, came out of the house.

“Ting Yip! You’re back,” she said, welcomingly.

“Wai Ming! There you are! Where have you been?”

“I’ve been collecting herbs like I always do in the morning,” she said as she patted the little rabbit in her arms.

“Come, Wai Ming! I’ve got something you would like to see from my long trip outside of the forest,” Ting Yip said as he led Wai Ming into the main hall of the bamboo house.

Ting Yip led Wai Ming before a large square table filled with gifts. She was instantly amazed at the large number of gifts that Ting Yip had brought home.

“Wai Ming, these are just some of the things I know that you would like. Here. Open,” he said as he gestured to a medium size wooden box on the table.

“Whoa! Books! All these books just for me to read?! Thank you, Ting Yip,” exclaimed Wai Ming as she flashed a bright, cheerful smile. She then thanked him with an innocent hug.

“To see such a beautiful maiden smile is like seeing Heaven on Earth,” Lam Ting Yip thought to himself as he watched Wai Ming flip through the box filled with books.

Later that night...

Wai Ming was free this evening with nothing to do because her sifu was gone for two weeks as usual around mid-spring of every year. After spending the whole afternoon placing all the herbs she had collected out to dry, watering the peach blossoms in the backyard and doing the other chores around the house, she sat in her room to rest and was about to reading a book, when she rose immediately to her feet.

“Oh! I can’t believe I forgot to do something so important!” she thought to herself as she quickly ran out of her room.

Meanwhile, Tong Sou Ching had just finished praying to her late si mui, Wai Ming’s mother, Chor Wai Sam, when she heard hurried footsteps coming towards the ancestral altar room. She went to open the doors to see Wai Ming half out of breath from running.

“Wai Ming, a lady should never run. Especially, in the house,” Tong Sou Ching reprimanded.

“I’m sorry, Aunt Sou Ching,” she replied.

“What are you doing here at this late hour? Did you forget that today is the anniversary of the deaths of your parents?” Tong Sou Ching asked in a scolding tone.

Yip Wai Ming nodded silently. Her aunt was strict yet very kind-hearted woman. She only appeared to be stern and cold person on the exterior. But, inside, she cared very much for her si mui’s daughter and did her best to show her love for her.

In a much softer tone, “Remember not to stay up too late,” Tong Sou Ching said to Wai Ming as she stepped out the ancestral altar room, closing the double doors behind her. Wai Ming immediately walked over to the alter in silence to light three incenses for each of her parents and bowed her head three times before placing them neatly before her parents’ tablet.

“Mother… Father… I’m sorry for coming so late. Ting Yip brought home so many books. I was reading a book on how to play the flute and forgot the time. Please forgive me,” she said before pausing for a moment.

“Mother and Father, I really wish that one day I could go out and find Jie Jie (Big Sister). I really miss having a real family. I know Aunt Sou Ching and Ting Yip is my family now, but I still can’t let go of the feeling that Wai Ying could still be out there waiting for me to find her. So many years have gone by. I want to find her. But, I know that leaving Aunt Sou Ching, after lovingly raising me all these years, will only make her sad,” she said to her parents before pausing in silence again.

“Please, keep my sister, Wai Ying, safe and show me a way of reuniting with her, my only real family left, without hurting Aunt Sou Ching’s feelings,” she prayed to them before bowing three times and leaving in tears.

.:Chapter 9: Traveling Alone:.

The Next morning, the sun rose silently in the orange and red horizon while a rooster stood proudly and crowed loudly announcing the arrival of the new day. Followed by the crowing of the rooster was the chirping of birds. Singing their songs, which echoed through out the Lost Woods.

Lam Ting Yip was still happily asleep in his bed dreaming of the goddess who has stolen his heart. The one person he would gladly give his life away, if she asked. Smiling in his sleep, dreaming of chasing her in the backyard. A backyard filled with Peach blossom trees planted by her. She was the joy in his life; her smiles and cheerful presence made his heart flutter with each smile. His face began to wince as he could hear someone calling him back to reality. Reluctantly, he opens his eyes. At first his vision was blurry and could only see a maiden looking into his face and uttering his name. Was he still in his dream? His goddess looked even more beautiful; perhaps he was still in his dream.

Completely awaken, he finally made out what she is saying and quickly sat up.

“Ting Yip wake up! Your mother is gone! She left us!”

“Wai Ming! What?” He said, still in a sleepy mode.

“I went to ask Aunt Sou Ching what she wanted to eat for breakfast and when I went into her room. She was gone!”

“Ah...she’s probably out doing something. Don’t worry,” Ting Yip said as he yawn and walked over to wash his face.

“No, Ting Yip I think she is really gone. Look she left us a letter, she never leaves a letter when she leaves to go places,” Wai Ming said in a worried tone.

Placing the drying cloth back on the rack, Ting Yip took the letter from Wai Ming’s hand and opened the enveloped. Astonished, he sat down by the table and reread the letter.

“What does the letter say, Ting Yip?”

Silently, he handed Wai Ming the letter. The serious and astonishment in Ting Yip’s face, told Wai Ming it was serious.

“Dearest Ting Yip and Wai Ming,

Please do not go in search for me. After much thought and considering, Yip Yee, I’m going to look for your father. I know it is foolish to look for your father, who maybe dead now from the poison years ago. But even if he is dead I must find his corpse and give him a proper burial. Wai Ming, I know if I do not let you go out to find your sister, you will never forgive me. Therefore, you have my permission to leave the Lost Woods. I pray that you will find your sister and happiness. Yip Yee go with Wai Ming and protect her from harm’s way.

Tong Sou Ching”

‘Aunt Sou Ching must’ve overheard me talking to mother and father last night,' she pondered as she sat down by the table.

“What should we do now?” asked Wai Ming.

Lam Ting Yip, wearing only his white under robes, walked over and quickly put on a black and gray robe and went outside. Sensing his anger, Wai Ming ran towards him and stopped him.

“Ting Yip, I didn’t want Aunt Sou Ching to leave for my sake. I’m sorry. But you know my goal all these years is to find my sister. I hope you can understand it was never intention for your mother to leave. I know why she left...she left because she knew you had to go along with me to protect me along the way but she knew I wouldn’t agree to it. For I would always worry about her having no one to take care of her,” she said and frowned sadly.

Ting Yip turned to face the ever so sweet, Wai Ming and took hold of her arms. Surprised, Wai Ming looked up. In those seconds as Ting Yip and Wai Ming’s eyes met each other it was silent. Until Ting Yip gave a small laughs and let go of her arms.

“Wai Ming, I’ve never been angry with you in the past and I’m sure not going to be angry with you now. Now...show me a big smile.”

She faked a smile as her thoughts worried her. ‘Why would Aunt Sou Ching leave to find uncle after all these years? Where could she be now?’

“Now let’s go look for my mom,” said Ting Yip flashing a smile as he marched out to the front of the house.

“Wait! Ting Yip! What if your mom changes her mind and come back? Shouldn’t one of us stay behind and wait?”

“You’re right. You can stay behind while I go look for her,” he said as he pat her on the shoulder.

He then immediately left in search for his mother.

“Aww...I always get stuck the boring one.” She frowned again.

Lam Ting Yip looked all over the forest for his mother but after hours of searching and failed. His mother had truly left the Lost Woods. Dusk came and Ting Yip finally decided to give up. Returning home, he found Wai Ming praying before the ancestral altar.

“It’s no use praying for my mother’s return, once she has decided. No one can change her mind. Come I’ll help you pack,” said Ting Yip as he stood beside Wai Ming.

“Pack?” asked Wai Ming as she rose up from her kneeling position and turn to face him.

“Yeah, you still want to go find your sister don’t you? We need to pack now, we‘re leaving tomorrow afternoon.”

“I don’t know. Ting Yip I need time to think,” she said as she ran out the doors and into the courtyard.

When she came into the courtyard filled with peach blossoms and looked upon the night skies. She found it cloudy as her thoughts. She thought if she had made sure that she was alone last night, things would still be the same. Even though she had always wanted permission from her aunt to leave, but now that her wishes was granted. She felt afraid of leaving the place she called home for the last twelve years.

To lessen her frustration, she bent down to remove the small white rabbit that she had rescued the day before, out of a small basket. She gently patted the small furry creature with fur white as snow.

“Hmm.. I’ll call you Suet-Yee. You probably like some fresh air too, huh?“ she said.

She strode over to the other end of the bamboo house and down the stairs, deep in contemplation. Then rested her feet as she sat down by the big water wheel. The sound of water splashing and splattering made by the big water wheel scooping water up to transport up and dump it back out continuously in a circular cycle, was the only noise aside from the hooting of owls and crickets in the night. Wai Ming sighed as she tries to make a final decision.

“Suet-Yee ah...What should I do? Should I leave or should I stay?”

Feeling a hand on her left shoulder, she curved around to see a cup of hot tea and Ting Yip’s warm smile. Lam Ting Yip had always been a good, caring, and comforting friend to her since childhood. He’s always there when she needed him most.

“Ah, You finally notice me huh?”

He coolly sat down besides her and handed her the cup of tea.

“Why are you still thinking about it? We can always go and find your sister then bring her back here to live with us,” suggested Ting Yip.

Wai Ming took two sips of the jasmine tea and pause while she considered the idea.

Then said, “That’s a good idea Ting Yip! We can return quickly after we find my sister.”

“Oh come on stop hesitating and worrying like an old lady! Let’s go pack now and so we can leave in the morning,” Ting Yip said as he got up and help Wai Ming up.

“Whose’s an old lady?!”

“I don’t know? But why don’t you look at the reflection in the water?”

“Huh?...aiya! Ting-Yip! Come back here and face my wrath!” she said as she raise the small white rabbit up in the air, about to throw it like a stone when she realize the poor innocent creature squirming, stopped and carefully held it in her arms. She shook her head lightly and smiled as her childhood friend disappeared from her sight.

With their belongings packed for the long trip forth, they went to sleep in their own respectable rooms. Wai Ming awoke the next morning, alert. As she noticed a letter addressed to her pinned on the bedpost by a small dart. Wai Ming looked around for signs of intrusion and found none. Relieved that it was only a letter from her sifu, she removed the letter from the bedpost and read it.

“Remember to not reveal your ability and knowledge of martial arts to anyone, except for extremely emergencies. Good luck and take care. My dearest, Ming Yee.”

The letter was very brief, caring, and straight to the point like the person who wrote it. Her mysterious sifu. Afterwards, Wai Ming got dressed quickly into a light blue robe and met up with Ting Yip.

The sun was shining brightly upon the yellow bamboo house as the two of them strode out pass the gates.

“Here, let me carry your baggage,” offered Lam Ting Yip.

“Okay.”

“What about that thing you have tied behind your back?” Ting Yip pointed at a long object wrapped securely in cloth.

“No... That’s okay I think I can handle a mere painting,” she said as she went behind Ting Yip and pushed him ahead.

‘Thank goodness, he doesn’t suspect it’s really a sword. Heaven, please don’t let him ask about it again, please!’ thought Wai Ming.

“So why are you bringing a painting?” he said as he turned his head and look back.

Wai Ming froze then tried to think of a logical reason.

“Umm...It’s a painting of... my older sister,” she replied.

Luckily for Wai Ming, Ting Yip accepted the answer and they continued to walk through the many thickets of the Lost Woods. Without the prior knowledge of feng shui or guidance a person who wanted to leave the Lost Woods would find it just as difficult as trying to find the bamboo house. It was a quiet morning with only the light swaying of tree branches and faint sound of crickets.

“Ting Yip! How about we say ‘Good bye’ to the Lost Woods,” she suggested. Ting-Yip nodded in agreement. They turned to face the forest one last time and shouted.

“One...two...three! Good bye! Lost Woods!”

It was a long walk and the sunlight was much brighter than it was in the Lost Woods and Ting Yip was starting to complain.

“Whoa! This baggage is heavy! Did you manage to bring a part of the house or forest with you?” Ting Yip complained.

Surprised at Ting Yip, she came around him and examined him from head to feet.

“What?” asked Ting Yip as he nervously checked his clothes and touched his face for something wrong.

“No, I thought that there was a girl complaining to me a second ago,” Wai Ming said and ran ahead.

“Aye! Little girl! You dare talk like that to me? Come back!”

The two childhood friends chased after each other until Wai Ming tripped on a rock, straining her left ankle. She tried unsuccessfully to stand up twice but the pain in ankle pulled her down to ground once again. Ting Yip didn’t waste time. He quickly took her in his arms and ran to the nearest temple, which took six more miles before they could arrive. When he had brought her to the nice cool temple of the Goddess of Mercy. He then laid her down on a cushion, usually used for kneeling.

“Ting Yip,” she called as she took a handkerchief out.

“Hmm...?” he said, still kneeling beside her and turned to face her again.

He paused as if someone had immobilized while Wai Ming wiped his perspiring forehead with a small handkerchief.

It was her caring nature and kind gesture that made him fall senselessly under her spell. Without the knowledge that she had that effect on him, she continued to wipe his face. He stared at her with admiration until her eyes followed his gaze and he shyly went to the other end of the small temple. Wai Ming never understood what it really meant to love, the love between a man and a woman. Neither did she understood why Ting Yip would act so strangely when he sees her. Ting Yip then gave her some medicated wine for her strained ankle to heal. Soon after they roasted a wild chicken and ate merrily. They decided to get all the night’s sleep so they could continue their journey the next day refreshed.

In the midst of the night, Wai Ming crept up from her spot and wrote a message for Ting Yip with the ashes from the bonfire hours before.

“Ting Yip, I’m sorry for pretending to have a strained ankle earlier to slow our trip down. I just wanted go find my sister on my own. I hope you understand. I shall return when I’ve succeeded in finding my sister. Please don’t worry... Yip Wai Ming.”

Grabbing her belongings, she went over to seal Ting Yip’s pressure points immobilizing him, which would later wear off after two hours. Wai Ming quickly left the temple and proceeded using her lightness kung fu to travel faster up the road. In matter of seconds she stood before the city walls. The gate was closed for the night and watched by sleeping guards. She took her chance and ran up the city walls.

“Success!” she whispered triumphantly. she had entered the city quietly and unnoticed.

The city itself was quiet except for the clock-watcher and some drunken drifters in the night. Fortunately, Ting Yip had always told her stories about the cities he’s visited. Even though she had not visited the cities herself, she had remembered all the details of how the city life was. She had learned a lot of things from Ting Yip’s stories, the usage of money, and the difference between an inn, a restaurant and a brothel.

Without his knowledge of the life outside the Lost Woods, Wai Ming would have been completely clueless. Tired, she looked around for a place to sleep, fortunate for her the Lucky Dragon Inn was just beginning to close up.

“Wait! I need a room!” she said as she stopped the middle-aged man in time before he closed the last of the doors.

“Miss come right in! How long will you be staying?”

“Umm...I haven’t decided yet,” she said.

“Aye! Ah Hiu! Who said you can fiddle with the book and brush?” The middle aged man snapped at the young waiter.

“Humph! I worked very hard these past twelve years to get this position as assistant innkeeper of this large place. Go close that last door!” he ordered.

“If it weren’t for the innkeeper being sick all the time from old age. He wouldn’t have sold half of this inn to you!” said the young waiter angrily.

“Be quiet you!”

‘Humph! There’s already someone assigned to the fifth room. We’ll see who gets in trouble!’ thought the younger waiter mischievously.

“Now that it’s quiet, Miss, we have a nice room. Room number five,” said the middle-aged waiter.

“Thank you. I will take that room,” said Wai Ming tiredly.

“Good! Just sign here and you’ll be taken up there right away.”

Wai Ming nodded.

“Ah Hiu! Bring this young lady up to her room. It‘s the fifth room!”

‘This inn is so large and richly decorated’ thought Wai Ming as she was led up the stairs to her room.

“Miss, if there is anything wrong, please inform the head innkeeper,” hinted the young waiter.

Wai Ming nodded and the waiter left. She walked around the medium sized room and opened the wardrobes. It had been years since she seen such luxuriously decorated room. She sighed and blew the candle out, and then jumped into the large bed. Tired and exhausted, Wai Ming became fast asleep in minutes.

Great !!!

Good question though: are Wai Ming and Ting Yip gonna be romantically connected in the future? He obviously likes her a lot, but she only sees him as a brother/friend.

As a guy, I just hate that!

Then again, I guess I shouldn't expect for her to throw herself at him either. ...lol!

.:Chapter 10: A Stranger in My Bed:.

Louis Koo as Chiu Tin Hung
Noel Leung as Yip Wai Ming
Ada Choi as Sui Fa ("Lucky Flower")
Eddie Cheung as Bak Ying Pui
Melissa Ng as Dong Li Mei

Daylight bathed the young couple, still happily sleeping in their bed. The young man began to stir. With eyes still fully closed, he slowly inhaled the air. A sweet fragrance suddenly flowed into his nose. Then he felt something heavy press against his bare chest. Bare because he had taken a relaxing bath in the spa before sleeping the night before. He opened his eyes slightly and looked down to discover a young woman sleeping soundly in his embracing arms.

"Where did this girl come from?" Chiu Tin Hung thought to himself.

Her cheek felt soft and cool against his bare chest. Her soft hair smelt of sweet fragrances of flowers. Her tender and gentle fingers caressed and wrapped around his neck. Tin Hung took a deep breath as he finally decided to just wake Yip Wai Ming up and ask. He shook her gently until she slowly stirred from her peaceful slumber. Her eyes widen as she saw a half-naked man release his arms from around her and quickly move to the other end of the bed. Upon seeing him, she simultaneously moved to the other end.

"Who are you?" they said in unison

Wai Ming wrapped her arms around herself. To her relief, she was still fully clothed. Her eyes locked on Tin Hung. She was too shocked to speak initially. When she finally did, she screamed and jumped off the bed. Then hurried to get her belongs. Chiu Tin Hung rose from the bed and swiftly put on his white under shirt.

"Gu Leung, what are you doing in my bed?"

"Humph! I should ask you the same question. I paid for this room," she said as she threw her bag over her shoulder and looked for her sword still concealed in cloth.

"You did? As I recall I have been in this room since last night."

Relieved to find her sword in the big cabinet . The night before she was so tired, she threw everything into the cabinet without noticing that somebody else's belongs were already in there. About to walk out the doors, she turned around and slapped him.

"Aye! Why did you slap me? I didn’t do anything to you!" Tin Hung said as he felt his cheek burn.

"That’s for lying! I paid for this room last night. Now, if you promise never to mention this incident to anyone, I’ll let you have this room."

"I promise." With his word, Wai Ming left, disappearing down the stairs.

"What a strange girl!" Tin Hung said as he massaged his cheek with one hand and closed the doors behind him with the other.

Meanwhile, in the secure and well concealed home of the White Fox Clan, Bak Ying Pui and Sui Fa were just finishing a practice fight in a beautiful courtyard filled with flowers and butterflies. Neither Bak Ying Pui nor Sui Fa seemed to be gaining the upper hand over the other. Through the years of training, Bak Ying Pui had taught little Wai Ying all the kung fu and sword technique he knew. Yet with everything he did, he knew he could not pay up all the debt that his family owed for killing her parents. Sui Fa flew back in the opposite direction then returned to her right, swiftly landing on one foot with the other leg still extended behind her. With her sword, she aimed precisely at her sifu’s throat and smiled in success. However, Bak Ying Pui shook his head in disagreement. Confused for a moment, Sui Fa looked down to see the tip of her sifu’s sword pointed directly at her heart.

The sound of a pair of hands applauding caused the two to laugh. Both teacher and student to turn to see who was clapping.

"Sui Fa! Your sword skills have greatly improved! Today you fought with at a level that rivals your sifu; tomorrow you’ll do even better, with practice of course!" Dong Li Mei said, with the grace and warmth of a mother.

Sui Fa just smiled, humbly. The three and a maid gathered around the courtyard’s table to talked.

"Brother Ying Pui, have you eaten breakfast yet? I made some delicious dumplings," she said.

"No, I haven’t."

"Good!"

"Ah, Bo. Come, let’s bring Master Bak and Sui Fa some dumplings," Dong Li Mei commanded, with the maid beside her.

As soon as Dong Li Mei was out of sight, the two of them went into the White Fox Clan’s ancestral altar to talk in secret. There wasn’t a secret in the White Fox Clan Sui Fa didn’t know. Even secret meetings between her sifu and Lady Li Mei.

"Sui Fa, what news do you have?"

"Young Master Bak is upset with his father ordering him around. Last night he left our clan," reported Sui Fa.

"My nephew has always been like that to his father. Although my nephew is now clan leader, all decision making still belongs to my brother. What else is new?"

"Lady Bing Sau has ordered the servants to not allow anyone to visit her. It seems Lady Bing Sau has been hiding someone in her mansion," reported Sui Fa.

"Do you know who it is?"

"I managed to get some information from one of the servants. The servant said that often times a man’s voice can be heard from Lady Bing Sau’s private room and at other times there would be a loud groan of pain coming from the dungeon."

Bak Ying Pui sighed. "My sister is torturing a man now?"

"Not just any man. The servant said he is Lady Bing Sau’s old lover who has betrayed her love," said Sui Fa.

Seeing her sifu thinking deeply, she suggested going to spy on the rooftops to see who the man was, but Bak Ying Pui shook his head.

"Sui Fa, from now on you mustn’t come by my sister’s mansion to spy or get news from her servants anymore! That’s an order!"

"But why?"

Bak Ying Pui turned from his stare at the ancestral tablets and looked sharply at Sui Fa.

"It’s for your own good. What if one of these days, Lady Bing Sau catches you spying on her. She’ll ask Master Bak to kill you and I will have no power to defend you."

"Sorry, Sifu! I will listen to you’re orders and dare not question them again," she said as she knelt down respectfully.

"Good! Now Sui Fa, go pack your belongs. I trust your fighting skills and lightness kung fu is good enough to follow Young Master Bak without him noticing. I want you to leave tonight," he ordered.

Sui Fa rose, bowed slight to her sifu and left.

.: Chapter 11: The Jade Flute:.

Weeks have gone by as Yip Wai Ming had just entered the inner city walls of SimSai province. After she had heard that there was going to be a gathering of the pugilistic world at Wah San sect. Being a person who liked excitement and huge gatherings, she couldn’t miss it and decided to go to see for herself. It was a long lonely trip, the only thing that kept her company was a jade flute. Although the flute wasn’t hers, the flute kept her company. During the trip, she had put what she had learnt from the books to use. Her flute playing skills improved with each time she practiced. Her persistence at practicing has brought her good, she has become an expert flutist.

Often times when trouble thoughts bothered her, the peaceful sound of the flute made her felt at ease. It was high noon as she was wandering the parts of the province eating a red fruit candy. The round yet small pieces were held together by a small stick. There were a crowd gathering around a group of people doing tricks to entertain for money. As Wai Ming turned the corner and entered another long street; two men were kicking as beggar girl out.

“Leave you smelly vagabond! Our restaurant does not serve smelly and dirty people like you!” they shouted as they kick the beggar.

Without a hesitating, Wai Ming helped the beggar up from the dusty ground. The beggar wore old tattered and raggedy clothes, her face smothered with ash yet her eyes glittered with surprise when Wai Ming helped her up.

“What’s your name?”

“Ah Ling” replied the beggar girl as she rubbed her hungry stomach.

Wai Ming smiled and took hold of Ah Ling’s hand.

“My name is Yip Wai Ming. Come I’ll treat you to a table full of food!”

“Really?”

Ah Ling had wandered the streets for days without food and her only way of surviving had been begging for food. No one had ever been so nice as to treat her to proper food. Wai Ming had taken Ah Ling completely by surprise.
“Ah Ling what are you waiting for? Aren’t you hungry?”

Ah Ling followed behind Wai Ming, still afraid that the men from before will mercilessly kick her out again. She hide behind Wai Ming.

“Waiter! Give me a good table!” ordered Wai Ming as she waved a large silver nugget in the air.

Three waiters rushed towards her and offered their service. Wai Ming giggled and turned around to take Ah Ling’s hand. The three waiters look strangely at Ah Ling.

“What are you looking at? Either give my friend and I, a good table or I’ll find a better place to eat!”

“Yes! Gu leung right this way,” said the waiters.

Wai Ming and Ah Ling was brought to a table with a very good view of the streets below.

“Ah Ling sit down. There’s no need to be afraid. You’re going to eat all the food you want until you’re full.” Ah Ling smiled and nodded.

“Now bring me...Umm what’s good at this restaurant?”

“Gu leung, everything on the menu is good. Our restaurant wouldn’t dare serve people food that isn’t considered a delicacy,” said the one waiter.

“Bring me everything on the menu!” ordered Wai Ming.

“You! Go get tub of hot water ready! You take this money and have some women’s clothes and shoes ready immediately!” She ordered the other two waiters.

“Yip gu leung, why are you ordering so much?” asked Ah Ling. For she was as surprised as the waiters were.

Wai Ming laughed and turn to see the first waiter still standing there.

“What are you waiting for? My friend Ling here is hungry. You want us to starve to death before you bring the dishes out?”

“Of course not. Gu leung it’s just that...I don’t think one table can fit all the food you’ve ordered,” the waiter replied.

She brought out two silver nuggets and immediately the waiter’s eyes shined bright.

“You listen to me and listen good. Today I’m treating my new friend to eat anything she wants. Bring me everything you have on the menu and combine more tables to this one if that’s what it takes to fit everything.”

“As you wish, gu leung!” The waiter hurried down the stairs to carry out the orders.

“Yip Gu leung, why did order so many food? We can’t possibly finish it all.”

“Ah Ling, don’t worry. We can always give the food to the needy people. Today, let us eat until we’re full. Besides, I’m will teach them a lesson for being mean to the less fortunate.” Wai Ming laughed as she pictured the owner and waiters’ face when she gives them another surprise.

At that moment, Ah Ling’s heart filled with such appreciation and admiration for Yip Wai Ming, she kneeled down before her.

“Yip Gu Leung! You are truly a good person! I, Chan Mei Ling promise to be your devoted maid until the next life.”

Wai Ming shook her head and replied, “Ah Ling! Don’t do that! Sit back on you’re seat. Everyone is equal. I want you to be my friend not my servant. Look! Some food are being brought out now. Let’s worry about feeding your hungry stomach first!”

“Thank you, Miss,” said Ah Ling as she dig into the first dish and rice bowl.

People around them watched strangely at Wai Ming, thinking she must be insane to treat a beggar girl. Which gave Wai Ming another idea, she turned to call out the balcony at a group of beggars in all big and small sizes to join their feast. The beggars happily excepted the food for they have never ate peacefully at a table in a fancy restaurant before.

When Ah Ling and Wai Ming were full, one of the waiters, returned with the tailored silk robes and shoes. The other reported that the hot water was ready.

“Ah Ling, no...Mei ling. Now that you’re finished eating... Lets get you bathed and changed into these new clothes and shoes.”

“Miss Wai Ming, I can’t thank you enough for doing all these nice things for me.”

“Aiya, Mei Ling stop your chattering. All the hot water is going to get cold. Go take a bath and change into these new clothes,” said Wai Ming as she and Mei Ling followed the waiter into a room with a large tub of water.

By the time Chan Mei Ling came out, all the customers have been chased out of the restaurant by the unpleasant smell of beggars. The innkeeper was boiling mad and was about yell at Wai Ming for making all his customers leave until a new customer appeared at the door.

Chiu Tin Hung approached the two girls and threw a elegant sword upon the table. The two who were drinking some hot tea and talking happily together stopped.

“Oh? It’s you again?” Wai Ming remarked as she drank her hot tea slowly.

“Yes! It’s me. Gu leung! Please give me back my jade flute!”

“How do I know this flute is yours? Do you know how to play it?”

“There engraved on my flute is my father’s, my mother’s and my name. And unfortunately I do not know how to play a flute,” said Tin Hung.

“You want you’re flute back?” she asked as a grin appeared on sweet young face.

Chiu Tin Hung nodded. In seconds, Wai Ming somersaulted and landed upon a white horse.

“Hey! If you want you’re jade flute back, I’ll give you but one chance. Find me and I’ll happily give back you’re flute.”

“Aye! That’s my horse! Oh! I can’t believe she did it again! Can’t she just leave without taking something that is mine?”

Hours after a fruitless search for the girl who stole his flute. Chiu Tin Hung decided to go up Flower Mountain to meet his old friend as planned. Fortunate for him, he found the girl’s friend suspiciously walking up a hill. He followed her from afar and waited for her to reach her destination. Not wanting to lose his only hope of finding the other girl, he followed closer as the girl disappeared through the long green branches of a weeping willow tree. As Chiu Tin Hung walked closer and closer, a he heard beautiful yet sad melody luring him even closer. He stopped beneath the willow tree as he could not help standing there listening to his flute being played. Maybe it was because of the ethereal surrounding of the waterfall and the beautiful music coming from the flute that made him stood frozen in a daze. Or maybe ever since his parents died, the beautiful melodies were lost along with them. As he stood there listening, he discovered the girl had a lonely heart that also longed for something he did, family.

I hope this chapter isn't boring. I just had to add another character along for the journey. I thought the last chapter was too short and I couldn't possibly leave for a long week trip to Canada without leaving you guys another chapter. To listen to the flute music in this chapter click on this link. Please give some comments/feedbacks on this chapter and music. Thanks!
