Without doubt, Bak Suet Lung was right. The surprise attack gave a clear warning of the clan’s intentions, enough to alert the people of mo lam to prepare themselves. With a formidable enemy like the White Fox Clan, the wise and cautious would plan for counterattack before the enemy strikes again. After two days had past, all the discussions and stressful planning against the White Fox clan were complete. The following morning, all the sects would leave to return to their respectable home provinces. However, tonight like the other nights, the two friends continued their own plans furtively. Yeung Kwok Fung and Chiu Tin Hung had just finished discussing their plans in the writing room, when a sharp sound of something breaking nearby brought to their attention that something was not right.

The two men searched around the manor and there in front of the room, in which Chan Mei Ling stayed, were broken shards of a soup bowl. Upon entering the room, Kwok Fung and Tin Hung found a maid lying unconsciously on the floor by the door and Mei Ling was just about to faint. Luckily, Tin Hung caught Chan Mei Ling in one arm in time. His eyes sharply noticed three needles pinned on Mei Ling’s shoulder and quickly removed them. The scarlet blood on the needles rapidly turned black. With no hesitation, he sealed her pressure points to prevent the poison from spreading internally to the heart. Then he gently laid Mei Ling back on her bed and went over to Kwok Fung.

Kwok Fung looked up and shook his head. “It is too late for this maid; her internal system is completely destroyed. Who ever killed her wanted her to keep her silence. How is Chan gu leung?”

“These needles have poisoned her but she’ll be fine until Divine Doctor Suen arrives, I’ve sealed her pressure points to stop any more harms from the poison,” Tin Hung said as he handed the needles over to Kwok Fung.

Even though it was late in the night, Divine Doctor Suen arrived in a calm manner and neat attire. He sat down on a small stool by the bed and checked the pale Chan Mei Ling ‘s pulse. Her pulse was growing weaker and slower.

The doctor was well in his fifties with a long graying beard. He was dressed in earthy brown and green colors, hardly any sign of wealth. Yet his face was a face of a man with great wisdom, cleverness, and mysteriousness. He carefully held the needles in a cloth and walked over to the table in the middle of the room.

Taking one and hovering it over the flame of the candle for some time. Then he took a short knife from his box and shaved off the dry blood onto a small bowl while Kwok Fung and Tin Hung watched intriguingly.

“Can you identify the poison on the needles, Divine Doctor Suen?” Kwok Fung asked as he followed the doctor over to the table.

“Is it curable?” Tin Hung asked as he glanced over at Chan Mei Ling who remained unconscious. ’I wonder where Yip gu leung is now?’ he thought with a readable concerned face.

“The particular poison is called Seven Steps, Capturing Soul. Someone poisoned by this would die immediately upon his or her seventh step. I assume Chan gu leung had fainted upon the second or third step, very fortunate for her. It was a good thing you saved her in time and the poison had not done anymore harm to her. It is cureable, however, she will need to stay here for a while until she recovers,” said Divine Doctor Suen as he wrote down some herbal ingredients for the antidote.

Later that night, Chiu Tin Hung sat at a table in courtyard lost in his thoughts, thinking about his lost jade flute. But he knew it wasn’t the flute that he was thinking about, it was she. Then his ears perked up as he heard footsteps approaching him and turned around. A large jug of Five-Fragrance wine met his eyes.

“Tin Hung, after all the stress of planning for the past few days, how about a drink?” Yeung Kwok Fung asked as he sat down, across from Tin Hung.

Tin Hung smiled and said, “Of course! Why not?” He took the jug in his hands then punched a hole into the red seal of the wine jug. Then took a mouthful and handed the jug over to Kwok Fung.

“Ah, tasty wine!” Tin Hung commented.

After Yeung Kwok Fung had taken his mouthful and wiped the wine dripping from his chin. He noticed his friend had risen from his seat and was now staring at the crescent moon.

“Tin Hung, what‘s wrong? Are you worried about her? I’m sure she’ll survive. Don‘t worry,” said Kwok Fung reassuring his friend.

“Don‘t worry? How can I not worry about her?“ Tin Hung said, turning around to take another mouthful of the wine.

“I wouldn’t be too worried about her. After a few days of rest and herbal medicine, she’ll be well again.”

Chiu Tin Hung looked at his friend bewilderedly as he put the jug down onto the stone table. “Fung, what are you talking about?”

“I’m talking about Chan gu leung.... Isn’t she the person, you’re worried about?”

“No, I’m sure Chan gu leung will be recovers soon. The person I’m worried about is...Yip gu leung.”

“Yip gu leung? You mean the other one you walked in with during the first meeting?” Yeung Kwok Fung asked him.

“Yes. And before Chan gu leung had told me that night when she was knocked unconscious, she saw a masked man carrying Yip gu leung away. Frankly, I‘m quite worried for her safety,” Tin Hung replied.

“Tin Hung, you should’ve told me earlier. I would have sent some students to help you find her.”

“No, Fung. I didn’t want to bother you, besides, at that time we had more important matters to discuss. Tomorrow, I will go search for her myself.”

“Nonsense, even in the most chaotic time. I will always lend a hand to help my friends.”

Chiu Tin Hung laid a hand on Yeung Kwok Fung’s shoulder and said, “Good! Let us drink to our good friendship then!”

The pair of friends took turns taking mouthfuls of wine and finished two jugs of wine before they were both red in the face and passed out drunk.

The sun was just rising as Chiu Tin Hung raced down the long path downward from Flower Mountain. He had awakened earlier than his friend and decided to leave immediately without a formal good-bye. Simply because he could not let any more time pass while Yip gu leung could be in great danger. When he finally arrived at a restaurant inn, he sat down exhaustedly. He didn’t know why he was in such a hurry or why he cared so much. Yip Wai Ming could be miles from here, since it had been three days since the fight at Flower Mountain and her disappearance.

With his body feeling completely exhausted and head pounding from a hangover, Tin Hung laid his head on the table and drifted off to sleep. Even in his sleep, images of the strange girl would ask him to rescue her from the clutches of some dark mysterious figure.

A few hours later...

Half awaken by someone’s shouting from across the room, he lifted his head sleepily and took a sip of some cold ginger tea, he had ordered many hours before.

“I don’t want to go now. I’m still sleepy!” Yip Wai Ming whined as Lam Ting Yip pulled her arm and led her down the wooden stairs.

Upon hearing her voice, Tin Hung was awaken from his sleepy state in time to see a man forcing Yip Wai Ming to go some place as she pulled back, not wanting to go.

Sorry for the long delay, I know its been like few months since my last update. I've just been really swamped with class/school assignments,mid-terms,final exams and life's wonderful distractions. I hope you haven't forgotten my fanfic here. Another chapter is coming up soon...just have to finish it up...so don't throw rotten tomatoes at me yet. heheheh >_<

Thank you for reading and Please leave some comments....greatly appreciate them...

***Just to make this clear, Chiu Tin Hung has not fallen for Yip Wai Ming yet. He just feels guilty that she was kidnapped. Since he brought her to the meeting in the first place, he feels guilty and wants to rescue her. That's it. Heheh

Interesting story. I thought I would treat myself this New Year by reading this story slowly.

Hi WK,

I'm wondering who has better kungfu, Wai Ming or Ting Yip?
If Wai Ming had frozen Ting Yip's pressure point when she ran away from him, wouldn't Ting Yip suspected that Wai Ming knows kungfu?
How could Ting Yip froze Wai Ming's pressure point so easily when he thought that she knows know kungfu? I would think that Wai Ming would be on the alert when there's so many fighting going on at that time.
Who taught Ting Yip kungfu? Was it his mother? How come the mother didn't teach Wai Ming also?
Sorry for so many questions

Hi Bubeng!

Firstly, thank you for your compliments.
Heheh, you sure pay attention to every details. Hmm...okay answers...

1) Ting Yip was taught by his father before his death, then his mother taught him afterwards but not very much, since his mother is sorta out of it at times (too overly depressed to care about things anymore)But there were times when she was conscious of things around her... Thats why it took her so long to decide to look for her husband..or what's left of him...when she heard Wai Ming wanted to leave to search for her sister, Ting Yip's mother also decided to leave as well.
- Ting Yip and Wai Ming's level as of now are equal. Ting Yip likes to travel out to places, so perhaps, he might've learnt more kung fu from other people...(hmm with an intersting person like him, I could write a different story solely on Ting Yip )
-Wai Ming loves excitement and so while the fight was on...she was too amazed by the different fighting styles(as she never was outside before) and so she let her guard down for a little.
-When she ran away from him, she sealed his pressure points, wouldn't he know she knows kung fu? I believe he is suspecting, so the conversation of how she knows how to fight, will come up again, eventually...

Hi Kara!

Great to see you again! Hehe..guess you didn't read my message, Tin Hung doesn't actually like like Wai Ming quite yet. Just worried for her safety and guilty that she's "kidnapped". Glad you liked the chapter.

I'm trying to finish Chapter 15 now, but not sure if I should add write more on something or should save it for the next chapter or so. A small dilemma...heh heh heh...

Question

I know it's been a long time since I've updated this story. I've been real busy. But have no fear, I will continue and finish the story no matter what, just trying to find some free time to finish writing Chapter 15. I've come upon a problem, I'm not sure what kind of personality or what kind of person Ada Choi's character Sui Fa/Yip Wai Ying should play? She is definetly not a weak and demure person, but I'm not sure if she is a person with a short temper or gets angry when she is pushed around or not? Anyways, if there is still interested readers, please suggest how I should characterize or write Ada Choi's character's personality. Sorta stuck...

I thought she was portrayed as a cool level headed girl when she was small, while Wai Ming was the impulsive one.

But on the other hand....she did lose her memory and she did live among the evil (even though not everyone is evil) so her personality should have change (??)

ccsakura: Thank you for reading. Actually, the next Chapter is mainly on Derek and Ada. The chapter would've been finish weeks or months ago. It's just that I've been really swamped with other stuff(school and work) and well I'm almost done with the next chapter, but not close to done yet. I hope to find sometime soon to complete the chapter though. I'm glad to know that there is still a avid fan of the story.

Arrow Chapter 15: The Hunter and the Hunted

Hello! Are there still readers here? I've finally updated after such a long very long hiatus. It's so hard to concentrate and get back to writing fanfics after taking off so long and not writing. Please show some support by giving me some comments on this brand new chapter! Fresh and hot out of the oven!

Chapter 15: The Hunter and the Hunted

The Purple Phoenix Inn was filled with the merriment of travelers and drunken men, who were loudly discussing the upcoming marriage of the Magistrate's son. Sui Fa rested momentarily on the handrail to wipe the sweat trickling down from her face then continued her way towards Bak Suet Lung’s room. Seconds later three men came from the opposite direction, each carrying two large empty buckets, forcing her to step aside and avoid a collision.

She was feeling very tired, but she'd never let anyone see her weaken and fatigued face. The face she always put on was strong and determined; a mask that concealed her true face and thoughts - even in the three days that had passed, when Bak Suet Lung would often test her patience by assigning her many chores. Doing chores didn't bother her at all, she was after all a maid of the Bak family, and any tasks given to her were always completed without questions. Ever since that fateful day twelve years ago, when she awoke severely injured, afraid and disoriented; it was Bak Ying Pui who consoled and aided her wounds. Occasionally, she was also visited by Madam Bak, whose dulcet voice often eased her troubled mind. She knew then, that her life would be spent serving them, as their obedient apprentice and maid. Except now however, she felt unsettling anger growing within her. Whenever she completed the chores set, Suet Lung would always complain and ask her to redo them again.

At times Sui Fa did wonder why he treated her so harshly. But then the connection between her and Bak Suet Lung was always very distant. She never really spoke to him or engaged in a friendly conversation with him, and when she did speak, it was only to answer his orders. She soon arrived with the last two buckets of hot water, carrying it carefully towards the wooden bathtub where Bak Suet Lung sat leisurely, resting his head in total comfort. When he heard her come into the room, he opened his eyes and closed them, then rubbed his nose.

“What took you so long? Don't keep me waiting so long next time.” Suet Lung commented while she added more water into the bathtub.

Casually, he straightened and turned his back towards her, "After your done pouring more hot water, you will scrub my back." He ordered, giving her neither choice nor option. When he heard no response from her, he turned around, just in time to have hot steamy water poured onto his head. Next, he felt his shoulders pushed down into the water and then his head went under too. When the pressure of the two hands released him, he bounced up from underwater grasping for air.

‘That will teach him to mess with me! I don’t care if he’s clan leader or Sifu’s nephew! I have had enough of his rich and spoiled attitude!’ Sui Fa thought as she left the room like a cyclone, leaving Suet Lung surprised and the doors wide opened to invite the cool, night breeze.
Closing the doors behind her, she found that her room was very warm and well lit. A silk screen was silhouetting a large object--- a bathtub filled with hot water and a set of new lavender robes laid out on the bed waiting for her. She went back to the doors to assure that nobody was outside watching in before returning behind the screen that encircled the bathtub

She spotted a letter addressed to her from Suet Lung, telling her to enjoy the gifts. ‘Why is he behaving so nicely to me?’ She thought curiously as reach out to touch the warmth of the water. She still couldn’t get over the initial astonishment that Bak Suet Lung could treat her so harshly yet now suddenly has presented her with such a thoughtful gesture. It was just unbelievable. She stared at her reflection in the water and hesitated for a moment and gave in finally. She removed all her clothing and slowly stepped into the bathtub. The steamy water felt good against her skin, once she let herself indulge in its comfort. For the first time in three days, she felt relaxed. The travel from Wah San (Flower Mountain) to the neighboring city had worn her out. On top of that, Suet Lung's complaints had stressed her somewhat, but she would not give him the pleasure of seeing her weary face.

Her thoughts then wandered back to what she had done minutes before. She had always considered herself a very composed person when facing situations. However, moments ago, a part of her just couldn’t repress the anger she felt inside anymore. ‘What made me act so violently? Have I become one of them?’ She thought quietly as she fiddled with the flower petals in her bath water.

Many times before, she had witnessed Bak Bing Sau and her daughter, Yim Lin's punishment for those who dared to offend them: poisoning, torturing and separating families; all heartless and cruel acts. Yet, everyone was that way in the White Fox Clan, all except her Sifu and Madam Bak. They were the only kind, compassionate people in the clan, who treated everyone with fairness and kindness. Sui Fa decided then she would ask for Young Master Bak’s forgiveness in the morning, for now she only wanted to relax.

The next morning, Sui Fa dressed in the new lavender robe and tied her hair in a different style. She checked his room but he seemed to have gone out early. She was returning to her room when a waiter called out her name.

“Sui Fa gu leung! Sui Fa gu leung!”

“What?” She turned around - surprised that a waiter whom she had never met before knew her name. Stepping closer to the waiter, she faced him off squarely.

“I’m sorry, to have upset you,” the waiter said as he bowed his head sheepishly.

“Never mind that. Just tell me how you know my name.” It was not even a question; it was a statement that demanded a reason.
“The Young Master told me I would find a beautiful maiden in lavender by the named of Sui Fa, so I assume the gu leung he was talking about was you. He also told me to give you a message.”

“Very well, what is the message?” She stepped back while the waiter explained slowly.

“He wants you to meet him in the green meadows outside the city.”

“I don’t suppose he told you why he wanted to meet me there?”

“A while ago he had left with a horse and a set of bow and arrows. I suppose he wanted to go hunting. The meadows is a good hunting ground... if one is brave enough to venture in it and come...out... alive without being killed by the wild animals. Perhaps you’d like wait for the young master to return?” The waiter said as he awkwardly scratched behind his neck.

“No, I’ll meet him out there. Prepare a healthy horse, some dry food and water for me immediately.”

Shortly after that Sui Fa arrived at the lush green meadows on horseback where the sunlight was gleaming over her head. Sui Fa kept the sunbeam away from her eyes with one hand as she slowed the light brown horse to walking pace and searched around for suet lung. She went deeper into the meadows and saw Bak Suet Lung was aiming an arrow downward towards a small white object, a rabbit in the grassy area a few feet away. The rabbit appeared to be injured. Then suddenly another bigger yet healthy light brown rabbit hopped over and appeared, sniffing the white rabbit’s wound. In a split second, Sui Fa somersaulted over and grabbed the two rabbits but apparently not fast enough. She succeeded in rescuing the two rabbits but not herself. The arrow pierced her left leg instantly and Sui Fa struggled weakly to stand up while holding the two rabbits in her arms.

‘You’ll be safe now, little ones,’ she thought as the throbbing pain continued to weaken her, making her fall to her knees.

Before her, Bak Suet Lung had three new arrows aiming in her direction.

‘I see. It is useless to ask for forgiveness, now. Having saved these rabbits from his arrows, I’ve offended him even more. He‘ll end my life here for interfering,’ Sui Fa thought wearily. She then closed her eyes and accepted her fate.

Bak Suet Lung pulled the string back and back and lowering his bow, aimed and shot. A loud ferocious roar cried out and dozens of spooked birds flew out from the tall grass. Sui Fa collapsed to the ground; her face paled as snow and winced from the pain.

Meanwhile, back at Wah San sect, Yeung Kwok Fung was help tending to his martial brothers’ wounds when the sweet aroma of dim sum filled the room. Everyone lifted their noses sniffing and wondering where the aroma was coming from. Knocks on the door alerted everyone’s attention to Chan Mei Ling’s pale face. She was warmly greeted by some of students when their keen senses told them the sweet aroma was from her basket of many levels and compartments. They guided her to the rectangular table at the center room and eyed her baskets of dim sum with hungry eyes. Mei Ling only smiled at them gently as she watched Yeung Kwok Fung inspected his martial brother’s broken arm.

“Ah Wong, your arm is healing very well! In a few days you will be able to return to your daily activities with the others.” Kwok Fung smiled with relief.

“Sect leader, I can not wait to move freely again! Thank you!” Ah Wong said cheerfully.

“Now lie down and rest, Junior Brother Fong and Lau will come to distribute everyone’s’ medicine and breakfast soon” Kwok Fung adjusted the head rest and turn to see Mei Ling watching attentively.

“Chan gu leung, what is wrong? Why are you out of bed? Did Brother Lau forget to prepare your medicine again? “He asked her worriedly.

She smiled in admiration before replying,” Nothing is wrong. Thank you for saving my life and letting a stranger like me stay to recover. I am now cured and my health is getting better and better everyday! Look to prove it, I have made many sweet red bean buns and other dim sum for everyone to enjoy!”

“You’re too kind, Chan gu leung. It is the duty of kung fu practitioner, to always help and aid the vulnerable. No need to thank me but my martial brothers will be very happy to accept your delicious offering!” He laughed joyously.

Together Mei Ling and Kwok Fung distribute the delicious morsels which Mei Ling had spent hours preparing from scratch and keeping the fire from burning out. When all had a chance to eat, Kwok Fung sat down and was about to take a bite when Kwok Bing passed by.

“Senior Brother Kwok, come taste Chan gu leung’s skillful cooking talent!” Yeung Kwok Fung put his arm over Kwok Bing and guided him over to the table.

“Chan gu leung is even a better cook than Brother Lau!” The other students praised her as they ate more.

Kwok Bing looked down at the remaining morsels on the table wordlessly then glanced at Mei Ling and took a red bean bun and left the room in silence.
“What is wrong with him?” Mei Ling asked, in reaction to Kwok Bing’s coldness.

“Oh…He has always been like that, he is not very talkative but when you get to know him, he’s a good person.” Yeung Kwok Fung said as he ate a steamed har gow.
Away from Wah San sect and in a neighboring city, Lam Ting Yip and Yip Wai Ming were also enjoying many different dishes of steamed, deep-fry and other delicious food at the West Gate Inn. Many watchful eyes looked on as Wai Ming tasted a little bit from each plate and nodded with satisfaction.

“Wai Ming…you’ve ordered too many dishes, are you sure you can eat it all?” Said Ting Yip, absolutely astonished that a girl whom he had grown up with can pig out in such an unladylike manner.

“Yes, course! Besides, I have never seen and tasted this many dishes before so I must take my chance now and taste them all! Then afterwards I will have enough energy to go search for my sister. Do you not agree?” Wai Ming said as she licked her lips and drank some wine from a small jade cup with intricate designs.

Lam Ting Yip sighed and thought about surrendering to Wai Ming’s reasons. Given that they had been traveling and searching for several days and a well deserved period of rest was needed now, as well as feasting.

“But Wai Ming you must not forget that we have to conserve our money in order to continue our journey.” Ting Yip reasoned.

Wai Ming laughed and said, “You do not have to worry about paying for the food.”

“Oh? Does Yip gu leung have money to pay for all the food that was enough to feed ten people?” He said he disbelief.

“The waiter told me that the Magistrate had paid all the big Restaurants in the city to provide people food and wine for three days in celebration of his son’s wedding today.” She answered while taking sips of the wines that were making her lightly tanned cheeks rosy.

“Is that so?”

“You don’t believe me?” She gestured for a waiter to come by the table and then she eyed Ting Yip to ask the waiter.

“I hear the Magistrate’s son is getting married today and the food and wine is free for three days, is that true?”

“That’s correct. Not only is food and wine eaten with no charge, for three nights there will be fireworks, lanterns, riddles, games and other fun events at the market each night.”

“Oh! That sounds like fun! Ting Yip gor, we must go tonight!” Wai Ming said excitedly like a child.

This time Ting Yip did not want to argue for it would be a good time to spend with Wai Ming and show her how fun it can to be outside of the Lost Woods.

That night, the market was filled with people young and old wandering from stall to stall that sold jewelry, goldfishes, cosmetics, lanterns and toys. Wai Ming was like a bee buzzing from one stall to another, Ting Yip could hardly catch up. Finally she stopped at a stall that sold many glittering hairpins, jade bracelets and silk handkerchiefs. Suddenly one caught her eye; it was a jade hairpin simple in style with two sequences of three white pearls flowing down from the top. She looked at it for a long time and was about to show it to Ting Yip but he was too busy looking at the goldfishes at the next stall. She then thought about what he had said earlier about conserving money and reluctantly planted the hairpin back down on the table.

“Ting Yip gor, come on let’s go see the lanterns!” She managed to smile again and continued her way towards the paper lanterns while tugging on someone’s hand which she thought belonged to Lam Ting Yip.
