    Chapter 1: Right Hand Man

Outside, the grey clouds had begun to clear, making way for the late morning sunrays. The lawn expanse warmed into a lush green colour, and the water in the pool glistened like diamonds.

Dylan Yip pulled himself away from the window view and wandered across to the mantelpiece. His eyes caught sight of a framed photograph of a teenage boy. It was of Robert Kam in his first boxing class. Dylan had always marvelled Robert’s strength and agility in the game. Only once he had dared challenge him, and had lost. His raw combat techniques needed perfecting, Robert had said after the match. From that day, a training regime became inclusive in Dylan’s life. Robert’s advice was always for the best. Unfortunately they never had another re-match. Robert’s love for pure adrenaline sports shortened his life in a head on collision at a car-racing tournament two months ago. Dylan’s heart felt heavy. Robert was not only a good leader and a friend; he was almost like a brother to him. He did miss him.

Footsteps on the stairs stirred his thoughts. Dylan turned around. A man in his late fifties in a grey suit descended the stairs.

“Dylan, I’m glad you’re back,” Donald Kam greeted him in a weary but firm voice.

Dylan noticed the extra fine lines underneath man’s eyes, worth several sleepless nights.

“Yes I came back as soon as I settled the deal. I’ve brought the contract back for you.” Dylan went to pick up the envelope on top of the mahogany coffee table. Donald nodded his head as he took the envelope. He continued, “And the other issue with Jumbo’s gang is under control now. I’ve left strict instructions.”

Donald sat down on the couch and motioned for Dylan to do the same. “I fully trust your abilities. It’s just bad timing that they want to cause trouble at this time.”

Donald sighed. “Too bad, Robert would . . .” he couldn’t finish the sentence. He looked up at the photograph, and muttered to himself, “I should have never let him do those thrill seeking sports. He played a deadly game with his life.”

Dylan quietly watched his boss, normally a fearless authoritative man, momentarily aged into a heart broken dad. Death was not unusual in the triad underworld, but the accident was not how Robert should have gone out.

“When is younger master coming back?” Dylan tried to change the topic.

“Oh, he needs to settle his affairs before returning.” Donald turned to Dylan. “But, Dylan, listen, Nathan doesn’t know the situation here. He is still naïve. You will need to watch over him.” He continued. “You and old Ben are my most trusted men. Now Robert is gone, my business will have to rely on you guys.”

Dylan nodded with assurance. “You don’t have to worry. You and Robert have been like family to me. I am always here for you.”

Donald patted Dylan’s shoulder. “Good. I will hold you to that.” He then stood up. “Okay. Well I am meeting Mr Han for lunch, would you like to join us?”

“No sir, I already have other plans.”

Dylan bade farewell and stepped outside. He was glad Nathan was returning. Donald should have his family with him. Dylan had meet Nathan for the first time, when he returned for his brother’s funeral. Although the strained tension between father and son was detectable, Dylan noticed Nathan was trying.

The Kam family’s youngest son had been sent abroad for studies at an early age, and had never returned to help Donald’s empire. Even when all previous dealings had been replaced with legal businesses, Nathan stayed away from Hong Kong. There were reasons, Dylan knew, but Robert rarely mentioned, and Dylan was not the prying sort. After all, it was still a family affair.

Dylan cleared his thoughts and took his phone out to make a call.

    “Hello?” a female voice answered.

    “Hey, it’s me.”

    Click! The phone went dead.

Dylan ran a hand through his hair. Women. He could never understand them. He made another call.

“Hey, Bernie. I just got back. Well yes, but I’ll come by a little later on. There are some things I have to attend to first.”

Yeah, some things have to be attended to personally, Dylan thought.

    Chapter 2: Apology

Leanne Chan lifted up her sleeves and pulled her long black hair back into a ponytail. Then with a swift motion, she poured the bucket of water down the sink. The water gurgled as it drained down the pipe, leaving pieces of leaves stuck behind, in which Leanne threw in the bin. Another empty bucket meant another bunch of flowers sold for the day. She was pleased the business was going well. From the back room, she watched her new staff at work.

Rita smiled at the couple in front of her. “Thank you very much,” she said and handed a small bouquet of yellow roses, carefully wrapped in decorated paper, to the female. The young girl nodded and smiled in return. Rita let out a little sigh as they left the flower shop.

Leanne came up to the counter. “Something wrong?”

Rita shook her head. “Oh no, just jealous of the last customer. She’s so lucky. I could tell they were a loving couple. Why has everyone found their other half except for me?”

“Oh I’m sure you’ll find someone special.”

Rita made a face. “Not the rate I’m going.”
“Maybe your expectations are too high.”

“Let’s see,” Rita said, as her eyes twinkled. She started to count her fingers. “My Mr Right have to have eyes like Aaron Kwok, a nose like Andy Lau, the build of Beckham, and wouldn’t mind if he came with a fortune like Bill Gates. And he has to be kind and considerate, makes me laugh and loves me very very much.”

“Err, could you make that order for two.” Both of them burst out laughing.

“Oh, here comes one cute guy.” Rita whispered, her attention on the entrance.

Leanne looked up. Through the glass window, a tall handsome man dressed all in black looked directly in the shop. He put one hand on the door handle to enter.

Leanne promptly turned to Rita, “Well then, you can serve him. I have to finish these accounts.” With that she turned around and started gathering the paperwork from the backbench.

Dylan walked through the shop, straight to the counter.

Rita smiled cheerfully at him, “Good afternoon sir, can I help you?”

Dylan looked at her, a little surprised. “Are you new?”

“Actually I am. You must be a regular to our shop.”

Behind her, Leanne loudly stacked the books together. Dylan glanced up to see Leanne promptly turn on her heel, and disappear into the back room.

Once inside the closed room, Leanne carelessly dropped the books on the desk. She glanced up at the calendar. Two weeks. She couldn’t believe it had been that long. She grumbled under her breath and sat down and waited. Minutes later, the door opened. Leanne flipped open a page and pretended to read.

“I’m back,” a sweet voice piped. A short-haired girl had walked in, holding a bag of grapes.

“Hey Kate, did you have a good lunch?” Leanne asked her.

“Yep, I’m so full, but I couldn’t resist getting these.” Kate held out the bag. “They are so good. Try some.”

“No thanks. I’m full too. Maybe later.”

Leanne peered at the half opened door. “Um, Kate is there anyone outside at the moment.”

    “Not when I came in.”

Leanne walked out to the front. Rita was alone spraying a fine mist of water over the flowers.

“What did the last customer want?” Leanne asked causally.

Rita shrugged, “Strange fellow. Didn’t even look at the flowers and just left.”

A look of disappointment came over Leanne’s face.

    **************************

The day drew to an end. Leanne waved goodbye to the girls, as she locked up the shop. She trudged down the street, her mind wandering over the day’s sales. Suddenly she became aware of a figure leaning on the railing a few feet in front of her.

Dylan inhaled one last breath of his cigarette before dropping to the ground, squashing it out with his foot. Quickly he exhaled the smoke, and approached Leanne, smiling warmly. “How about dinner?”

Leanne rolled her eyes in annoyance and continued walking.

Dylan walked beside her. “Come on Leanne, are you still angry?”

Leanne kept walking. Dylan tugged at her sleeve. “Let’s not fight anymore, I’m sorry. Don’t be like this.”

Leanne stopped in her tracks and crossed her arms. “You don’t even know what I’m angry at.”

“I . . .” he started. He remembered the fight. Being hung up on. Did he want to go through the whole process again? But god he did miss her. Defeated, he sighed and mumbled his response. “The incident, I was late, I was in a bad mood. Everything was my fault.”

“The incident happened two weeks ago. I thought you forgotten you had a girlfriend.”

“I called you, but you didn’t answer my calls.”

“You called me twice. And then you disappeared.”

“I had to go to Taiwan on business. I thought you wanted time to calm down,” Dylan explained.

“You always have your reasons. You really don’t understand anything,” Leanne snapped. “Oh, you make me so mad!”

Dylan watched Leanne’s angry face, and pictured a hot boiling kettle. He restrained himself from grinning. “You know you look so un-sexy when you’re angry.”

Leanne was about to turn in a huff, but Dylan pulled her into his embrace.

“Okay, okay, this is serious, I know. I apologise for everything, which includes my inconsideration and previous pathetic attempts to say sorry. Can you forgive me this time, please?”

Leanne pursed her lips and looked down without a word. Dylan reached into his pocket and pulled out two silvery white origami objects. He handed to Leanne. “Here, I got these charms for you while in Taiwan. It’s for safe blessing.”

Leanne glanced at the ‘safe and sound’ characters squiggled in chinese calligraphy on the top.

“The other one is for your grandmother,” Dylan quickly added.

Leanne felt her anger subsiding. She released herself from Dylan’s embrace. “We’re in the middle of the streets.”

Dylan gladly welcomed the change of tone. “I really don’t mind.”

Leanne clutched the charms in her fingers, and looked at Dylan, “How come you didn’t buy me any flowers?”

Dylan widened his eyes. “You work with flowers all day. Why would you want flowers?”

“You are so unromantic. And you say you’re here to apologise.”

Dylan ignored her remark. “Come, there’s a great new Malaysian restaurant. I know you like spicy food. Let’s go.” He took her hand and she reluctantly let him guide her to his car.

    Chapter 3: Returning Home

Nathan Kam brushed a long fringe from his eyes and surveyed the crowded airport. The arrival area was filled with greeting families and friends. A passenger in front of him ran forward to a mother holding a small child, whom he immediately hugged tightly. Ah, the family reunion, Nathan thought bitterly.

A group of uniformed air hostesses, each dragging their compact luggage behind them, passed by. One of them waved a hand to catch Nathan’s attention. She made a telephone sign with her hand. ‘Call me’ she mouthed, and gave him a wide smile. They had just met on the plane. Nathan casually felt the pocket of his suit; her number should be in there somewhere. He gave her a wave goodbye.

“Can you see your father?” a tall lanky man beside him asked.

Nathan gave him a wry smile. “My father doesn’t like airports. He says it’s too time wasting waiting for people to arrive. I’m sure someone will have orders to pick us up.”

Right on cue, a broad shoulder man walked towards them, with two men following. His open necked shirt revealed only part of an impressive eagle tattoo.

“Master Kam, I’m here to pick you up. Bernie’s the name,” he said politely.

Nathan held out his hand. “Yes, we’ve been introduced before. Good to see you. And call me Nathan.”

Taken by surprise at his gesture, Bernie broke in a wide grin, as he shook his hand firmly. “Ah, you remember me.”

“Well, you are dad’s good helper. Got to know the important people.” Nathan pointed to his companion. “This is Jason Fung. He is an old friend of mine, who’ve come to help me in Hong Kong.” The two men shook hands.

“Well, the car is outside. Mr Kam said to take you home first. He is at the office at the moment, but will see you at later,” Bernie said, and led Nathan and Jason out of the airport.

Inside the silver Mercedes Benz, Bernie and Jason started to discuss the latest trends of motor vehicles. Nathan listened only halfheartedly. He leaned towards the window and watched the moving Hong Kong scenery. People and building faded quickly in and out of sight. He was finally home for good, and yet everything was so unfamiliar.

Sent away to prestigious boarding schools since he ten years old, Nathan had virtually spent most of his life in America. It wasn’t his choice to make. His father disliked him since he was born. It was because his mother had died giving birth to him. Complications had arisen, the doctors had said. Yet, inadvertently, Donald held Nathan responsible for the death of beloved wife.

Nathan recalled his bitter disappointment when Donald provided him with recommendations to major American companies after his graduation. It was clear to him, that the Kam family didn’t require him. Submissively, he stayed in his part of the world.

Then Robert suddenly died. Nathan was saddened by the death of a brother he hardly knew. All he wanted was a family, and they were already leaving him. But the shock came when he attended Robert funeral. Donald suggested he return to live permanently in Hong Kong. Selfishly, it was Donald’s need for kinship. But Nathan held hope. He would finally have a chance to prove his worth. No matter what, he was going to make his dad change his mind about him.

    **********************

Dylan felt like intruding. He gazed at the splendid dinner table set-up. This was supposed to be a family dinner. Why were he and the others here? It didn’t seem appropriate to him. But Donald had insisted they come.

Bernie slapped him on his back. “Hey, can you believe we’re not late. And wow, great view. Next time I’m gonna book this room,” Bernie exclaimed, and walked towards the window to admire the harbour view.

The door opened and Donald walked in with Nathan. Old Ben and his son followed closely. Old Ben was Donald’s oldest friend. The stocky man used to be known for his bad temper and aggressiveness, but had mellowed in his older years. His son also worked for the Kam business, and bore an exact likeness of his father.

“Good, everyone is here. Sit down, sit down.” Donald said.

Everyone exchanged pleasantries. Nathan gave Dylan a polite nod, in which he returned with a smile.

The manager came in. “Good evening Mr Kam. The wine will be coming soon. Should I start the course?” Donald nodded, and the manager left.

“So, I heard you were working in Mathers Limted over in the States. It’s a very impressive company.” Old Ben’s son said to Nathan. “Their revenues have risen thirty percentage since last year.”

“Yes, this year has been quite a excellent one for them.” Nathan remarked.

“Now you’re back, I’m sure I’ll have to exchange pointers with you.” Old Ben’s son continued.

“Oh, I’m sure it will be the other way around.”

“Doing business with Englishmen may not be the same with Asians. This is Hong Kong after all. Nathan will need all you guys to advise him, till he get the hang of things.” Donald interjected.

Old Ben chuckled. “Nathan’s a smart boy, I’m sure he’ll do fine. Hey, let’s not talk about business.”

The waiters entered with the wine. Dishes of food soon followed.

“The lobster’s very good tonight.” The manager who appeared again told the table.

The dish settled in front of Nathan.

Nathan hesitated. “What’s wrong?” Donald asked.

“I can’t eat lobsters. I’m allergic to them.”

“No problem, no problem, here have the fish, or try the shark fins. It’s just as good,” Old Ben said, moving the dish away from Nathan.

Nathan face’s fell with a sudden dejection. But it passed away quickly.

Dylan lifted his glass. “Let’s drink to welcome Nathan home.”

The rest of the table lifted their glasses for a toast to welcome the returned son.

Chapter 4: Everyone's Got An Agenda

Leanne came out of the medical clinic with her grandmother. Although her grandmother’s diabetes was relatively controlled, Leanne liked to hear the doctor’s report. Since her parents died in a car crash, her grandmother was the only relative she had left.

They walked along the busy afternoon street. Several street vendors stood by selling their wares. Leanne kept her eye opened for the one with fish dumpling.

“What are you looking for?” her grandmother asked.

“That fish dumpling vendor. He seemed to have disappeared.”

“Isn’t there one that hangs around the park?”

“No, this one here is really good.”

“You only think about eating. Wonder what Dylan says if you turned into a fatty?

Leanne smiled jubilantly. “I’m sure he would have me regardless. Besides, he loves those dumplings as much as me.”

Her grandmother wagged her finger. “Oh no, don’t bore me with the story of ‘How I Met My Boyfriend Through Fish Dumplings’,” she teased. “Please, I could almost recite it.”

Leanne put her hands on her hip and pretended to glare at her grandmother. But it was true; she had met Dylan because of a couple of fish dumplings. One year ago, she was buying some fish dumplings from a street corner. Then in a bout of carelessness, she had turned and collided with her fish dumplings into the next customer. Stained with dumpling juice, Dylan amusingly commented that although he liked fish dumplings, he didn’t want to smell like one.

It was an instant attraction, Leanne recalled. Several weeks later, they started dating. Dylan had been honest about his rebel past, and she knew of his employer’s influential status. But Leanne trusted Dylan to be a good person.

Leanne glanced up at the pharmacy ahead. She called to her grandmother, who was in front, “Hey, wait up, I have to get some more sleeping pills.”

“Finished already? You’re not taking them regularly, are you?”

“No, only once in a while. It just helps me sleep better,” Leanne said, entering the store.

Leanne’s grandmother followed close behind, muttering, “I still don’t like it. Isn’t sleeping like a natural ability?”

    *************

A few streets away, the sound of a bell announced the end of another school day. Students flowed onto the pavement in an obligatory rush. Many grouped together and headed to their favourite hangout. One of them was the local restaurant on the corner. Today as usual, the place was extremely busy.

The balding owner took the money from an exiting customer, and scanned his eyes around the place. “Where’s Eva?” he yelled across to a nearby waitress.

“Don’t know. But she better come and help me.” She jotted down a bunch of teenagers’ order and headed to the next table.

The owner strolled towards the back. He peered down the tight corridor to find a female figure leaning against the wall. “Eva, you get your butt out here. No breaks allowed during this time!”

“Coming!” replied the girl. She turned her back and lifted the phone to her ear. “Please, I know you can help me. I wouldn’t be asking if I wasn’t desperate. Okay, I’ll talk to you again tonight. Gotta go. Bye.”

    “Eva!” a voice hollered again.

Eva Lee slipped the phone into her bag and threw it behind the counter as she passed. The kitchen man frowned at her, pointing to the tray of drinks. “All for table ten, except that black coffee for table six.”
Eva picked up the tray meekly and prepared herself for the mad afternoon rush.

    ************

The moon replaced the sun as the night fell across Hong Kong. Eva stepped out of the restaurant and into the dimly lit street. She leaned on the railings for support, as she made a call.

“Polly, Eva here. Oh, did I catch you at a bad time? Err, so about the money . . .” her voice trailed off as the caller interrupted. “Oh great, thank you. Yes sure, I know you’re busy. I’ll come to see you tomorrow. Yes I know the place. Mmm. Thank you again.” Eva ended her call. Feeling slightly relieved, she fished out a cigarette from her bag and quickly lit it up.

A sighed left her lips as she blew the smoke out. Things weren’t going too well for her lately. Only last week, she just got out of a bad relationship. Then came her mother’s plea for help. Her brother had foolishly lent money from local loan sharks to set up a business deal, which turned out to be a scam. In the end, the money wasn’t recovered but a dangerously large debt still remained. She had only promised to take on the debt to stall for time. But the amount was almost impossible for her and her family to pay.

Eva closed her eyes a brief moment. Polly was her only hope now. She was an old colleague, whom Eva had helped once before. Now married to a wealthy old Malaysian man, Polly had promised to return the favor and lend her the money. At least Polly would be a humane creditor.

Eva glanced at her watch. It was time to get to her next job. She had also taken up several shifts as a waitress in a karaoke bar. She ruffled her fingers through her shoulder length hair, as she studied her reflection in a mirrored shop window. She knew her black roots were starting to show through her burgundy red colour. But the hairdressers will have to wait. Right now, everything except raising the money, had to wait. Wearily, Eva plodded towards the nearest bus stop.

    ****************

At the Kam mansion, Donald poured a brandy into a glass for himself, and lifted the bottle questioningly at Dylan.

“No thanks, I’m fine,” Dylan declined.

Donald put the bottle to one side of the bar and picked up his glass. Swirling its contents slowly, he spoke, “How are you finding the work at the hotel?”

“Learning more everyday. I never thought I could handle sitting in office all day.”

“I know I put you in a spot, when I added the hotel management on top of the other work. But I’ve seen the result. You’ve handled everything well since Robert’s absence.”

“My few commitments seems trivial compare to you. You can’t expect to take on all Robert’s work by yourself.”

“That’s my very thought. What about coming to work for me in the office?” Donald sat on the stool next to Dylan.

Dylan shifted in his seat. “I think I’ll be better handling the clubs and restaurants. Real estate is really not my expertise.”

“Ah, but I’m sure Bernie and Pete can manage the smaller businesses. I need you in the thinking department. I know you’re a smart boy. Look, I started out just like you.”

“Surely Nathan would be a much better choice.”

“Hmm, I’ve already have plans for him.”

At that moment, Nathan returned home.

“Dad. Dylan,” he greeted. Dylan nodded back.

“Hmm,” responded Donald. He turned his attention back to Dylan. “So, what do you say?”

“Can I have time to think about it,” Dylan asked.

Donald broke into a smile. “Of course.”

Nathan wavered near the bar. Dylan decided it was time for him to go. “I think I better be going now.”

“Do think about it. I’m counting on you.” Donald said, patting him on the arm.

Nathan watched this scene with a sudden envy. To those unknown, Donald acted if Dylan was his son.

“Good night all” Dylan said. The maid let him out.

Nathan waited for his father to down his glass of brandy before speaking.

    “Dad.”

    “Yes?”

“I’m wondering if I could come to the office with you tomorrow.” Nathan asked.

Donald looked at him thoughtfully. “But you’ve only been back a week. Don’t you want to take your time? Relax?”

“No, I prefer to keep my mind going. I want to see what I could do to help you.”

“I guess your keenness is a good thing.”

“Right, so we leave at eight thirty?” Nathan said, beaming at his father’s praise.

“Actually I’m going to the hotel tomorrow morning. The meeting . . .” Donald paused for a moment. “How about you meeting me there at the conference room at nine thirty?”

    Nathan nodded enthusiastically. “No problem.”

“It’s late, you better get to bed,” Donald advised, turning his back and pouring himself another glass.

“Good night.” Nathan said, hesitantly. He was frustrated that he didn’t take the chance to engage his father into another conversation. Things he did so easily with others were inexplicably hard when it came to his father.

    Chapter 5. Prejudice

Eva threw the money to the taxi driver and ran up the steps to the Summit Hotel. Her boots clicked against the smooth floor, as she made her way across the lobby.

“Wait!” she called out to the closing elevator. The door mechanically opened again. Eva stepped in. “Thanks,” she directed it to the well-dressed man standing there.

She waited for him to press his floor before attacking the button to the restaurant. She was incredibly late, and it was the only time Polly could see her. Damn the traffic. She looked at her bare wrist. No watch, she had forgot. Meekly she tapped the gentleman on the arm, “Excuse me, do you have the time?”

He turned slightly and looked at his watch. “Oh, it’s a …”

Suddenly the elevator lights blinked twice, and went out. The elevator jerked to a complete stop. Eva gripped at the man’s arm tightly. “Why has the elevator stopped?” she cried aloud.

“It’s probably a power failure. I’m sure everything will be fine very soon,” he assured her.

Eva retreated back against the wall, her fingers still gripped to the stranger. She started to breathe heavily. “I can’t be stuck here. I can’t breathe!” she gasped.

The elevator creaked loudly and the lights flickered back on. The whirl of machinery put the elevator in motion again.

The man looked at her. “It’s okay now.”

Eva straightened herself up. She was definitely taking the stairs when she went down, she didn’t trust this elevator.

“Miss, err,” the man lifted his arm.

“Oh I’m sorry.” She released her grip. The elevator stopped at her floor and she quickly exited.

    “It’s quarter to nine.”

    Eva turned around. “What?”

    The man smiled. “The time.”

Eva waved her thanks, as the door closed. Then she flew to her appointment.

    *****************

Nathan straightened the creases Eva made on his sleeve in the elevator. He shook his head. Claustrophobics should never take elevators. The door opened to the executive floor and he made his way to the conference room.

Donald’s secretary was waiting outside the room. “Good morning Mr Kam,” she said.

“Good morning,” Nathan said and was about to proceed to enter the room. But the secretary walked in front of him.

“Err, Mr Kam, you can’t go in there yet. The meeting hasn’t finished yet. I’ve been instructed to tell you to wait for a while.”

Nathan was surprised. “The meeting has already started. But I was told to come at nine thirty. It’s not even time yet.”

The secretary adjusted her rimless glasses. “Yes, the meeting was scheduled at eight thirty. The client has a plane to catch. It really shouldn’t be much longer.” She turned, knocked on the door and then entered inside.

A few people walked by without a passing glance, as Nathan sat himself down on the waiting couch. A series of laughter faintly arose inside the room. Nathan tightened into a frown as the feeling of insignificance stirred his emotions.

After fifteen minutes, the door finally opened. A short Japanese man hurried out with his assistant. Dylan and Bernie came out next, followed by a lawyer.

“Why are you out here?” Dylan asked, seeing Nathan.

From behind, Donald answered the question. “The client’s is valuing our professionalism. I didn’t want to unexpectedly bring in another person into the end stages of the deal.”

Nathan stood up. “I guess I’m lucky, as that is one less project for me to help with.” There was a hint of sarcasm in his words.

“You’ll be far too busy handling the rest of the company,” Donald responded curtly. “Nathan, I’m putting you in charge of the hotel management.”

Nathan blinked at his words. It was his second shock for the day. “But I thought you would need me in the other office.”

“One step at a time. I think you should learn here first.” Donald pointed to the secretary. “Maryanne has organized your office. I will come to see you in a moment.”
Donald then beckoned to Dylan and Bernie. “Can I have a word with you two.”

“This way, Mr Kam,” the secretary said to Nathan.

Nathan quickly glanced up at his father who was already engrossed in discussion. He had no choice but to follow the secretary towards the elevators.

    *****************

It was ten thirty when Jason reached the Summit Hotel.

“Great room,” Jason commented on Nathan’s spacious new office.

Nathan had his back turned to him, staring out of the window. He didn’t respond. The silence was a bad sign. Jason knew this from experience.

“So . . . you’ll be working here,” Jason prompted.

“Does he treat me like I’m his son?” Nathan asked, his back still turned.

    Jason sat up. “Err,”

“It’s not like I don’t have any experience. But he’s adamant I am never good enough.”
Nathan sat down on his chair in a sullen mood. “Why did I have to be the second son? Why did my mother have to die? What a joke they’re playing on me!”

“Maybe he needs more time to adjust to you,” Jason said.

“Is that why he treats others much better than me?” Nathan pursed his lips as he thought about his father and Dylan.

“You’re not regretting coming back?” Jason asked, quite concerned. He had given up his job to find better prospects in Hong Kong. Nathan’s connections were his only hope.

“No, I don’t usually give up so easily,” muttered Nathan. He leaned his head back into the comfy chair and closed his eyes as if searching for an answer.

Then like a passing shower, he opened his eyes and relaxed into a pleasant expression. He stood up and gestured to Jason to the door. “Come, no time to waste, I should go greet the staff personally. And you probably need a working area somewhere. I think we should ask the lovely secretary, Maryanne about that.”

Jason followed alongside, glad that Nathan was back to his usual self.

    ***************

The three girls looked up as a couple came into the flower store. The man was lean and had boyish good looks. He had his arm around the waist of a short, but voluptuous girl with heavy eyeliner.

“I’m getting you a dozen roses just for good luck,” he said to the girl.

The girl let out a giggle. “But Matt, I need good luck everyday.”

“Then I’ll send you flowers everyday. Just to see you smile lights up my day.”

“Yeah right. We’ll see.” But she was beaming gleefully.

The man beckoned to Kate. “Twelve of your freshest red roses for the lady please.”

Kate gathered the flowers and went to the counter to dry and wrap. Leanne told him the amount. While he took out his wallet, his girlfriend took out a pack of newly developed photographs from her bag.

“I remember there’s a great one we took. I want to make a copy for your wallet,” she said, looking through the photos.

“Sure,” he answered, counting out the correct notes.

“Matt!” the girl exclaimed. “Why are there ones with your ex-girlfriend here?”

Matt looked at the three photographs she held out in her hand. He meekly took them. “Aww, it was taken ages ago. Must have been at the start of the film.” He thrust the photographs onto the counter. “Could you put them in the bin,” he said to Leanne and then turned to the girl. “See, all gone.”

The girl pouted. “I don’t want to see anything of hers. Promise you throw everything of hers away.”

“Of course, I don’t need anything of hers. You’re the only one in my life now.”

Kate waited for a pause in their conversation before handed the flowers over.

The girl entwined her arms around her boyfriend and they turned to leave.

“Excuse you forgot your receipt,” Leanne called after them.

Matt returned to the counter. He winked at Leanne as he took the receipt and whispered, “Thanks. I tend to forget things when I see beautiful women among beautiful things. See you around.” He flashed a sexy smile and returned to his waiting girlfriend.

“Did you see that? He was virtually flirting right in front of her,” Kate remarked, as they left the shop. “I don’t reckon she’s gonna be the last one for him.”

Rita strolled up to the counter, and picked up the top photograph from the bin. “I think he did better with his previous girlfriend. No wonder she’s so jealous.”

She held the photo in front of Leanne and Kate. Taken in front of a beach backdrop, Matt had his arm around a pretty red-haired girl. They had smiled happily for the camera.

“He probably used his sweet promises on her too,” Kate muttered.

The door swung opened and a middle-aged woman walked in.

“Alright now, back to work girls,” Leanne said, dropping the photograph back into the bin.

Great job so far Paige! <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0">I like modern love stories, I think they are nice sometimes, a big difference from ancient revenge stuff. Not that it's bad just good for a change...

Poor Eva, my friend is scared of confined spaces too! Elevators, scare the heck out of me too sometimes, when it's over 20 floors.

I feel bad for Nathan, having no control of what his job can be. Well, not really, and it's sometimes good for you parents to decide, but it seems like he needs his own independence.

I read 5 chapters and I'm making such big assumptions I'm sorry! Great story so far though, update soon!

    Chapter 6: Hero

The next night, Dylan and Leanne planned to watch a movie. Leanne arrived at the cinema on time, but didn’t see Dylan. She stood by the box office and waited.

Outside, a flurry of feet pattered down the crowded street. Two women turned sharply and entered the cinema lobby. Leanne glanced up, as the moving bodies rushed past her. The women rested against the wall, catching their breath. Leanne recognized the red haired girl in the photograph. She was the flirt’s old girlfriend.

Eva peered at the entrance. “Don’t think they saw us. Whew, that was close. Thank goodness you saw them coming, Sandy.”

“I think I got a stitch,” Sandy complained loudly, clutching her hips.

    “Sorry to drag you along.”

Sandy gave her an affronted look. “Hey, we’re friends. You know I complain about everything. Anyway I’m sorry I couldn’t help you with the money.”

“Don’t be sorry. It’s my brother debt, and since he can’t pay, I guess I have to try. Seriously, I can’t let him get butchered, even if he is good for nothing,” Eva said, rubbing her temples with two palms.

“But I thought you said you were getting the money from your friend.”

“Now that’s stupid my fault! I turned up late, and she had already left for her trip. She left a message saying she’ll be back Monday.”

“So, what now? Those men aren’t gonna give up so easily.”

“I’ll try to stay low in the meantime,” Eva murmured, adjusting her bangles. “God, I need a smoke.”

“Hey, isn’t that your ex?” Sandy suddenly injected.

Dressed in a tight top and jeans, Matt sauntered proudly towards them. Eva grimaced. She wasn’t in the mood for confrontations.

“Hey baby, you’re looking good tonight,” he said to Eva.

Sandy waved a hand at him. “What do you want?”

Matt ignored her. “I hear you’re taking up your brother’s debt. Pretty dumb thing to do, isn’t it?”

“What I do is none of your business,” Eva said frostily.

“So there is probably no hope in getting the four hundred dollars you owe me back.”

    Eva was incredulous. “What?”

“Hey, that time I said you could lend it off me. Now you’ve dumped me, I haven’t even asked for compensation.”

Eva reached into her bag for her purse. She lifted out some money. “For your information, we shared the bill. This is half. Take it. I owe you nothing from now on,” she hissed.

“Your loss baby,” he declared, taking the money and turned away.

Controlling her emotions, Eva balled her fists. She couldn’t believe she fell for guys like Matt. “Let’s go,” she said to Sandy.

Leanne watched them leave. She couldn’t help overhearing the whole conversation. She sympathized the girl’s situation. She too had encountered money problems after her parents died. The shop was almost shut down. But fortunately she got through that. She hoped the girl would too.

    *******************

After the movie and supper, Dylan drove Leanne home. They stopped at the intersection, and Leanne fleeted her eyes out the window. A trio of men had gathered in front of an alleyway. In the midst, she saw a familiar red haired.

“What do you think is going on?” she asked.

Dylan peered over at the group of men. “Looks like loan sharks.”

“Can you do anything?” Leanne felt alarmed.

“Well, it’s not how it works. It’s not really my place to interpose. They’re just doing their job.”

“Oh my god, she’s going get beaten, and you’re worried about breaking the code of the triads.” Leanne regretted the words as soon as it left her mouth.

Dylan winced at her tone. “They wouldn’t be on to her, if she didn’t use their money.”

“I’m sorry. You know I don’t mean it. But the girl, she took on the debt for her family. She is in a pretty desperate state.”

Dylan watched few of the men cursing the curious passerby. “You know her?”

“Not really, but I kinda know her story. I’ll tell you about it later. Can you just get them off her back?”

    **************************

Eva trembled at the menacing group encircling around her. “Please, I just need few more days. Please, it’s true, I promise I will get you the money.”

The leader took the cigarette out of his mouth, and made a clucking sound. “You said that the first time. Do you know that pretty young girls like yourself should never take on a debt you can’t pay? You know what can happen?”

Eva retreated only to hit the wall. The others laughed in unison.

Dylan sauntered up to the group. He beckoned to the leader with a nod. “Hey, how are you today?”

The leader widened his eyes. “Who the hell are you?” he sneered. “This is none of your business.”

Dylan smiled apologetically. “Sorry to break up the party, but I just want a word with my sister.” Dylan then extended a hand towards the astonished Eva, and in a scolding tone said, “You must remember to call and express your thanks to Dylan Yip. You know how he hates ungrateful people.”

Eva watched the men glanced at each other at the name. The leader waved his cigarette in the air. “You say she’s under Dylan Yip. Stop bluffing. We checked her out.”

Dylan tightened his jacket and walked up him. “I tell you now, she is.”

The man didn’t look convinced. Here was this kid trying to threaten him. His two followers inched closer, partly revealing hidden weapons.

Dylan suddenly gripped his arm around the leader’s neck. He was so quick that he startled everyone. “Look I am hoping that you give a little face to me and my boss, and let the girl have her week. I’m sure no one gets hurt. Could you do that Clyde?”

“Err . . .” Clyde gurgled and nodded.

Dylan released his grip and patted the man’s back. “Bernie always said you, Clyde, are a man of mercy. I’m sure your boss, Mr Chow would think so, when Bernie tell him about tonight. You won’t get in trouble.”

Clyde retreated back into his fold of men, but cautioned them to stay put. This stranger knew stuff, he thought. Maybe his confidence didn’t stem just from his good looks. He turned to face Eva, who had hidden herself behind Dylan. “Girl, I’ll be seeing you soon.” He motioned to his men, and they walked away down the street.

Sandy and two scruffy long haired guys came running towards Eva.

“Eva, I brought help,” Sandy said, almost out of breath. She then looked to the parting group of men. “They . . . they let you go?” Her astonishment was obvious.

“Yeah, they did.” Eva turned to face the handsome stranger.

Before she could get a word out, he had already spoken. “You got the week. Those men are serious. You may not be so lucky next time.”

“Thank you,” Eva managed to utter.

Dylan turned around and headed across the road. Leanne should be waiting for him in the car.

Silently Eva watched his back disappear around the corner.

    “Who was that?” Sandy asked.

    “I don’t know.”
