It's interesting, but the Li Shimin-Sui princess love story is common in quite a few other series too. It kind of reminds me of Da Yu Er (who later became Xiao Zhuang tai hou) and Duo Er Gun's love story in that it's a popular series subject, but rather touchy and unofficial from a historical standpoint.

I finally watched the film Qing Hong and really liked it. There's not much action, but the dialogue and story are solid. For others who've also seen it...did you guys count the number of gunshots at the end?

Yes i did, there are only 3 shot in the end. I believed that the director wants the audience to guess if that guy got shot or not.

I think he lived, because his name was on the 5th spot and the director did't let the audience hear what really happens to him. And since the 1st 3 person got the death sentence, i guess he did't died.

Gyy was great in Qing Hong, i feel sad for her character.

Lady Zhuge did you like the part when they were danceing?? That was funny and amazing.

Okay good, I just wanted to verify 'cause I counted 3 shots as well. I agree, I don't think the guy was shot either.

Do you think Qing Hong actually loved the guy and was restrained by family and societal obligation or was it just a passing crush that would have been long forgotten after her family moved to Shanghai had a certain something not happened?

Also, whatever happened to Qing Hong's friend's lover? I thought the lover and her friend eloped, but then later her friend came back from a university to see Qing Hong?

Yeah, that scene was a little shocking in terms of the movie. It reminded me of a smokey version of John Travolta's Grease or maybe Saturday Night Fever.

I believe she did love the guy, it just that her father don't want her to be with that guy. The father follows her to school and after schol, everyday. ( imagine if you have a father like that)

ooo.you mean GYY's friend's lover, yeah that was funny too. He was forced to marry his ex-girl friend by his father, because she's having his baby.

Yep John Travolta...i was going to say that but i don't know the movie name.

Yeah, him. But remember that he eloped with Qing Hong's friend after his forced marriage? Was there ever any mention of him after that?

Will, at the end, GYY's whole family is in the car, there is a scene showing him on the street and at the same time he looked into the car see who's there. I'm not really sure what happen after he got marry.

Whoa, I didn't even notice him there at the end. I guess I was too busy listening to the public broadcaster and trying to catch all the gunshots.

My guess is that he and Qing Hong's friend got caught and Qing Hong's friend was sent to the university while he was forced back into his original forced marriage. He was probably looking in the vehicle to see if Qing Hong's friend happened to be in there.

Although Qing Hong certainly found breaking up with Xiao Gen an unhappy experience, it's difficult to say whether she loved him, because the film doesn't seem to focus on human relationships. I think it's more about how people relate to their surroundings. Whereas her friends and family feel they are in exile, QH is fairly content where she is.

Did anyone notice what Wang Xiao Shuai was doing with the colour red? I'm not sure, but to me, it looked like he was associating it with QH's 'resistance'. Red is her special colour: it's in her jacket, her heels, the blood dripping from her hand – even her name. It is the one thing distinguishing her from the scenery. But after the horrible event, the red mostly disappears, and she sort of ceases to be herself.

The dancing scene was the main bit of humour in an otherwise quite dour and oppressive film. It's funny how dancing is supposed to be about people getting together, but the director used it to show only segregation: between girls & boys, between town & country, and – perhaps – between QH & her best friend.

Even in its (few) lighter moments, it's not the most fun film to watch. Can't anybody cast GYY in a happy role for a change?

wow..that's some heavy stuff your talking about, you could put a tumor in someone's brain just by thinking about it. j/k

It just feels like GYY's psychology 101.

Anyways, i guess GYY loves to plays sad or misfortune roles. To me i think its more challenging then play a character with happy ending. It's GYY's trade mark. I bet her next serie is going to be the same stuff.

It's news abt the HK media secretly catching GYY auditioning for a role in a Jackie Chan movie. It says that Jackie sorta wants to promote/groom her up in HK since she's grown famous in mainland after QH, sorta like how Stephen Chow promoted Huang Sheng Yi and how Peter Chan promoted Zhou Xun in HK productions.

Anyway, i think this news may be credible since GYY did mention earlier that she is working on the terms and stuff for 2 new movies, one of which is a HK production, but she didn't want to announce anything till she's confirmed.

Nice profound analysis, owbjhx. I agree with most of what you've said, but I question her resistance, though. The thing about Qing Hong is that she never seemed that rebellious to begin with. Her father's guarded and almost anal behavior toward her made her out to be that way more than she really was. For instance, her best friend had to spend a lot of time convincing her to lie and go to the dance party and she still almost ended up not going. When things got a bit too "wild" for her there, she gathered up her stuff and headed for the exit. She may have been content with her life in the country, but is it more because she's known no other life or that she truly liked it there, whether it be for love, peace, a sense of belonging, or something else. Her personality and characterization throughout the entire film (as you've alluded to, she almost just blends into the background) makes it difficult to distinguish, just as it's difficult to distinguish whether or not she truly loved Xiao Gen.

Qing Hong's heels stood out to me as being pink and completely mismatching almost every essence of the film. Even pink and Qing Hong's symbolic 'red' clashed.

With her soft aura and genuinely wistful look, GYY is very effective at playing such roles. She probably likes these types of roles as well. After all, she can choose not to accept them.

Thanks for the lovely pics, sunnysnow.
