Thanks Junzi for the translation of the novel. Read your translation at wuxiapedia and was engrossed with it. Was searching the internet yesterday and today and finally found the rest of the translation. What I don't understand is why didn't you post the rest of your translation in wuxiapedia? Just curious. Once again, thank you. The story is pretty depressing though.

The septet heard the footsteps, and leapt up in unison, only to hear them cease abruptly. In this extremely brief time, they could all hear the thumping of their hearts. Suddenly the footsteps rang out again, but they were moving away in the northwestern direction. Just at this moment, a strong wind blew, blowing a large amount of snow from the ground onto the bonfire. The bonfire immediately went out, and darkness surrounded them.

Su Lu’ke, Li Wenxiu and the others pulled their swords out of their scabbards with resounding swishes. A’man gave a panicked cry and fell into Su Pu’s arms. The blades reflected rays of light from the snow. The footsteps went further and further away, and could not be heard eventually.

Nothing unusual occurred in the forest until daybreak. In the morning, when the first ray of sunshine streamed through the leaves, everyone was reenergized, and began to follow the path again. After a while, A’man noticed that a few of the tree branches on the left had been bent and broken, and called out, “Look over here!” Su Pu pushed aside some trees, and spotted two sets of footprints on the ground. Joyfully he cried, “They’ve gone on from here!” A’man said, “That bandit must’ve read the map wrongly, gone in a circle and passed this place again. He gave us a real fright last night!” Su Lu’ke laughed heartily, “Ah yes, the timorous ones in Che Erku’s family trembled the whole night. Whereas the heroes in Su Lu’ke’s family hoped that the demons would appear so they could pull the demons’ ears and look at them more clearly.” Che Erku did not give him a glance, and appeared to not have heard. Suddenly, he stretched his hand backwards and grabbed Su Lu’ke ear. Su Lu’ke gave a loud cry, and landed a heavy punch on Che Erku’s back.

Che Erku gave a jerk, and the hand grabbing Su Lu’ke ear did not let go. Su Lu’ke ear began to bleed profusely. If Che Erku used more strength, he would probably pull Su Lu’ke’s ear off.

Li Wenxiu saw that these two men were already in their forties but continued to antangonize each other like urchins, half in seriousness and half in jest, amusing her greatly. Su Lu’ke and Che Erku exchanged more blows before separating. One had a bruised nose and the other, swollen eyes.

The two of them argued as they continued making their way forward.

By this time, the road was bumpy and winding, making it hard to progress. Every so often, they had to make their way past a col, or squeeze into a cave. Without the footprints in the snow leading the way, they would have had great difficulty finding it. Li Wenxiu thought, “This labyrinth is indeed in the most secret of places; without the map, how could it be found?” They journeyed until the afternoon. Most of them had not slept a wink the previous night, and were all exhausted. Only Li Wenxiu, whose neigong had taken root quite deeply, remained energetic. Su Pu said, “Father, A’man can’t move any more, let’s take a rest!” Before Su Lu’ke could reply, Che Erku, who was at the head, loudly cried, “Ah!” Su Lu’ke rushed forward, turned past a row of trees, only to see two huge iron doors set in the mountain opposite. The doors, spotted with rust, were obviously items with a long history.

The septet cried jubilantly, “The Gao Chang Labyrinth!” They rushed towards it. Su Lu’ke used some strength to push the doors, but they remained steadfastly closed. Che Erku said, “That bandit must have barred it from inside.” A’man scrutinized the area surrounding the iron doors for any possible hidden contraptions, but the doors were set so perfectly in stone that they seemed almost natural. A’man pulled the rings on the doors and turned them left, but the doors refused to budge. Nobody knew how long this labyrinth had been built. Even though it was dry in the desert, the iron door had begun to rust, and any hidden contraptions would probably be faulty. Yet when she turned the rings left again, they were loose, so she turned them a few more times. Su Lu’ke and Che Erku were pushing the door with all their might, so when the doors suddenly opened inwards, both of them were taken by surprise and fell inside. They were shocked for a moment, but then got up laughing merrily.

Inside was a dark, forbidding passage. Su Pu lit a torch and held it in one hand; in the other, a long blade, and led the way. After they had passed the passage, three paths appeared in front of them. There were no footprints in the snow inside the labyrinth to lead the way, so they did not know which way their two quarries had gone. Everyone bent down. Looking carefully, they saw that there were faint footprints on the left and right paths.

Su Lu’ke suggested, “Four of us take the left path, three of us take the right one, let’s regroup here in a while.” Li Wenxiu said, “That’s not a good idea! Since this place is called a labyrinth, the paths will surely will be meandering; it’s better for us to stick together.” Su Lu’ke shook his head, “How big can this cave be? Hans are born timid, what to do?” Although his words were such, the seven of them still went in a group. Since the right path was slightly wider, they all chose it.

After walking slightly more than ten zhang, Su Lu’ke thought, “This Han’s words were not too far off the mark.” For the path diverged once more. The septet examined the ground carefully for footprints, and followed them. Sometimes, when both paths had footprints, they simply chose one to follow. After walking for more than half a day, they had passed many divergent paths. Every time they came to a fork in the path, A’man would leave a marking on the walls, to prevent them from getting lost when they returned. Suddenly, the area in front of them brightened, and a large piece of empty ground appeared. At the other end were once again two iron doors set in the mountain.

They walked across the empty ground and stood in front of the doors. Su Lu’ke turned the rings once again, but these doors were not really shut tight. With only a slight touch, they opened with a creak. They walked inside, and saw that they were now in a hall. Reverently arranged across the four walls were clay statues and wood carvings of Buddha figures. After this hall was a long series of rooms.

Most of the rooms contained statues of Buddha. By chance they spotted some Han writings on the walls: ‘The King of Gaochang’, ‘Wen Tai’, ‘Thirteenth Year of Zhen Guan of the Great Tang’, and so on. One hall was full of Han figures. In the middle was an old man, and the plaque said ‘Altar of the Great Saint Late Teacher Kongzi’ [Confucius]. On the left and right were more than ten figures, labelled ‘Yan Hui’, ‘Zi Lu’, ‘Zi Gong’, ‘Zi Xia’, ‘Zi Zhang’ and so on. When Su Lu’ke saw so many Han figures, he furrowed his brow and left without a backward glance.

Li Wenxiu thought, “The people here all believe in Islam, why are there Buddha and Han figures in this labyrinth? And there are Han words written on the walls; this is extremely puzzling.” They passed a room and came to another, only to see that half of the labyrinth had been destroyed. Some of the halls were filled with yellow sand, and some had their openings blocked. The paths in the labyrinth were already complicated and winding, with the fallen walls and piles of sand obstructing, it only made one dizzy and confused. Sometimes some skeletons would appear on the path. The objects in the labyrinth were not those used in the Muslim Region. Li Wenxiu had a vague recollection that these were items of the Hans of the Central Plains. The sights left everyone dazzled, and everyone was commenting in amazement. But there was not even half a piece of the legendary gold and jewellery.

They followed a dark passage forward. All of a sudden, a forbidding voice ahead rang out, “I have been living peacefully here for a thousand years, and nobody has dared to disturb me. Whoever has the gall to come over will die immediately!” He spoke in Kazak, and his pitch was perfect. Although his voice was not very loud, everyone could hear him distinctly.

A’man gasped, “The demon! He…… he said he has been living here for a thousand years.” She held Su Pu’s hand and retreated a few steps. Luo Tuo cried, “It’s a man, not a demon!” He lifted his torch high and went forward. Sang Si’er did not want to appear weak, and rushed up, proceeding with him. They had just rounded a corner when they suddenly cried loudly, and flew out backwards. Everyone was taken aback. Su Lu’ke and Che Erku tossed their torches aside and rushed to help them up. A stream of weird laughter came from somewhere ahead. The voice continued, “I have been living here for a thousand years, for a thousand years. Those who enter will die one by one.” Without a second thought, Che Erku carried Luo Tuo and sped out; Su Lu’ke carried Sang Si’er and followed the rest out. The weird laughter filled the passage. When they reached a courtyard, they looked at Luo Tuo and Sang Si’er. Both of them had blood flowing from the corner of their mouths, and had already died. The remaining five people looked at each other, and were both saddened and frightened.

A’man said, “The evil demon doesn’t allow anyone to…… to disturb him, let’s go quickly then!” At this point, how could Su Lu’ke or Che Erku continue putting up a heroic front? They carried the two bodies, and following the markings made previously, found their way out.

Che Erku had lost two of his beloved disciples. Extremely upset, he could not stop wiping away his tears. Su Lu’ke did not ridicule him any more. Instead he comforted him, “Thos two Han bandits vanished after entering the labyrinth; they must have been killed by the demon inside. That’s great, these two bandits deserve their just deserts.” A’man said, “Let us return by the route we came by, and never…… never come back here ever again.” Che Erku declared, “Our tribesmen are coming over in large groups soon, we must inform them and prevent them from entering the labyrinth, or they’ll all die horrible deaths. Su Lu’ke answered, “Right! As long as they stay outside the labyrinth, then it’s all right.” But no one could really know if it was really all right. So for safety’s sake, the five of them retreated six or seven li until they reached a large piece of open ground. Su Lu’ke said, “Evil demons are afraid of the sun, if they want to cross this place, they’d be exposed to sunlight.” A’man asked, “What about at night?” Su Lu’ke scratched his head, unable to answer.

Fortunately, the first batch of people and horses arrived before nightfall. Su Lu’ke and the others quickly narrated how they had found the labyrinth and how the demon inside had killed people.

Although the people were many and brave, nobody suggested going forth to explore. After four hours, the second and third batches arrived one after the other. A few hundred people camped on this open ground. There was a large fire built every ten people. They thought: no matter how vicious the demons were, they could not be unafraid of so many bonfires.

Li Wenxiu leant on a rock and thought, “Father and Mama travelled thousands of li from the Central Plains to the Muslim Region, just to find the Gao Chang Labyrinth. They lost their lives even before they found it. Even if they did, they’d more than likely be killed by the demons inside the labyrinth, unless they retreated immediately after hearing the demons’ voices. But Father and Mama are well-skilled in martial arts and would surely not listen to the demons. Ai, no matter how skilled people are, how would they be able to defeat demons?”

She heard soft footsteps behind her, and someone walked over, and called in a low voice, “A’xiu.” Li Wenxiu was overjoyed. Jumping up, she answered, “Grandfather Ji, you’re here as well!” Old man Ji said, “I was worried about you, so I followed the others to come and find you.” Li Wenxiu’s heart filled with gratitude. Holding his hands, she said, “The journey here was difficult; you’re so old; it must’ve been extremely tiring, sit down quickly and take a rest.” Old man Ji had only settled by her side when ear-piercing cries of owls came from the west. Everyone turned to look at the direction of the cries, only to see a shaky white object in the darkness race towards them at top speed. When the object was about four zhang away from everyone, it suddenly stopped and stood still. It was shaped vaguely like a human. Under the illumination of the fires, they could see that this ghoulish figure was wearing a white robe; its face was full of blood, and its white robe was also spattered with it. It was extremely tall, and was taller than a normal human by five chi. It looked extremely terrifying in the silence of the night. Suddenly, it stretched its arms out. Its ten nails were even longer than its fingers, and its hands were also full of blood.

Everyone held their breaths and watched him in silence.

The demon laughed weirdly, and sharply said, “I have been living peacefully in the labyrinth for a thousand years, and do not allow anybody to disturb me, whoever asked you to be so daring?” It spoke in Kazak, and it was the voice they had heard in the labyrinth in the day. It turned slowly, and pointed at a horse three zhang away, calling out, “Die!” It suddenly whipped back, sped off, and vanished in a twinkling.

This demon came and went in a flash, scaring people out of their wits. Only after it had left for quite some time that the people dare to gasp in fear. The horse it had pointed at had crashed onto its knees, fell over and died. When everyone crowded over to take a look, they saw that while the horse had not a single wound on its body, nor bled from its nose or mouth, it had somehow gotten hit by a magic curse and died.

Everyone said, “It’s the demon, the demon!” Someone said, “I told you there were demons in the great Gobi.” Another added, “I heard that demons have no legs, let’s see if that demon left any footprints.” So everyone held torches and went towards the path the demon had taken. Imprinted in the sand every five chi was a small round hole. Human footprints could not be little holes like these; and the distance between two holes could not be that great.

With this, everyone was completely convinced that the demon from the labyrinth was creating havoc. Everyone said, “It doesn’t matter what the labyrinth contains; we can’t want it anymore. We should leave quickly at once tomorrow morning.” Everyone spent the night skittish and terrified. But the next day, when the sun rose, everyone was suddenly not as afraid as before. Some youths discussed exploring the labyrinth; Su Lu’ke and Che Erku reprimanded them harshly, saying that if they wanted to do so, they needed to come up with a good plan first.

But after discussing nearly an entire day, nobody could come up with a good plan. The result was everyone agreeing to stay here another night, and discuss the matter again the next day.

Close to 9 pm, which was the time the demon appeared the night before, there were once again three sharp owl cries from the west. Everyone’s hair stood on ends. The white-robed, long-legged, blood-spattered demon came again like lightning and stopped a few zhang away. In a sharp voice it said, “Why have you all not gone back? Hmph, if you stay around here for another night, each and every one of you will die a terrible death. I have been living peacefully in the labyrinth for a thousand years, and do not allow anybody to enter it, whoever asked you to be so daring?” At this point, it turned slowly, pointing its two hands at a youth some distance away, calling out, “Die!” Then it turned back violently and sped off. Under the illumination of moonlight, they saw that he went further and further away, before finally disappearing.

That youth crumpled slowly, and died without another word. There was not a single wound on his body. The demon had killed a mere horse last night, but today he had murdered a strong young man.

Nobody dared to stay longer after such a turn of events. Furthermore, Su Lu’ke and the others had said that there were no treasures in the labyrinth, not even a gold or silver ingot. If it were not dark, they would all have sped off home.

The next day, as soon as there was a glimmer of sunrise, everyone set off for home with much hubbub.

Li Wenxiu had carefully examined the dead horse the previous day. Now upon looking at the dead youth, all her suspicions were confirmed. To herself she said, “These were not done by a demon!” Suddenly, someone behind her said in a trembling voice, “It was a demon, a demon! A’xiu, this is scarier than an evil demon, we must leave at once.” She had not realized that old man Ji had come and stood behind her.

Li Wenxiu sighed, “All right, let us go then!” Suddenly they heard Su Pu shout, “A’man, A’man, where are you?” Shocked, Che Erku answered, “Wasn’t A’man with you?” He started to shout as well: “A’man, A’man! We’re leaving!” and ran about looking for his daughter.

Su Pu shouted A’man’s name as he raced up a little hill and looked around. He suddenly spotted a floral scarf on the path going west which resembled that of A’man’s. He immediately rushed over and picked it up. It was A’man’s! He was extraordinarily worried, crying out, “A’man has been captured by the demon!” At this point, most of their fellow tribespeople had left, taking with them Luo Tuo, Sang Si’er and the other youth’s corpses. Only five people - Su Lu’ke, Che Erku, Su Pu, Li Wenxiu and old man Ji - were left. Su Lu’ke and the others heard Su Pu’s cries and went over to investigate.

Su Lu’ke cried, “Su Pu, Su Pu, you foolish little thing, come back quickly, aren’t you afraid of death?” As he saw his son moving further and further away, his love for his son defeated the fear of the evil demon, so he started to chase him. Che Erku was shocked for a moment, calling, “A’man, A’man!” and followed them.

Old man Ji shook his head, “A’xiu, let us go back.” Li Wenxiu answered, “No, Grandfather Ji, I must go and save them.” Old man Ji said, “You won’t be able to defeat the evil demon.” Li Wenxiu replied, “It’s not a demon, it’s a person.” Old man Ji suddenly stretched out his left and and gripped Li Wenxiu’s arm tightly. In a trembling voice he said, “A’xiu, even if it is a person, he’s still more terrifying than an evil demon. Listen to me, let’s return and go far far away. We are Hans, we shouldn’t live in the Muslim Region anymore; let you and I return to the Central Plains.”

Li Wenxiu saw that Su Pu and the others were running further and further away. Anxious, she exerted some force and tried to shake herself free. But although old man Ji was aged, the strength of his arm was extraordinary. She exerted more and more force but was unable to escape his grip, so she yelled, “Let me go! Su Pu will be killed by him!” Old man Ji saw that her face was reddened and her expression, highly anxious, and sighed. Releasing her arm, he said softly, “You are prepared to risk everything, just for this Kazak youth!” Once Li Wenxiu’s arm was released, she immediately turned and raced off, and did not hear what old man Ji had said.

She sped to the labyrinth in one breath, only to see Su Pu shaking his long blade, loudly yelling, “Damnable evil demon, you’ve killed A’man, kill me too! A’man’s dead, I don’t wish to live either! I am Su Pu, come out and fight with me! Are you afraid?” He turned the door rings, but in his state of high anxiety, no amount of his turning would open the door.

Su Lu’ke was at the side calling out, “Su Pu, you foolish little thing, don’t go inside!” How would Su Pu be willing to listen? At the sight of his devotedness, Li Wenxiu felt a pang of envy, and loudly said, “A’man is not dead!” Su Pu suddenly heard this, and his mind cleared immediately. He turned and asked, “A’man’s not dead? How do…… do you know?” Li Wenxiu said, “It is not a evil demon in the labyrinth but a person!” Su Pu, Su Lu’ke and Che Erku chorused, “But it’s obviously an evil ghost, how can it be a person?” Li Wenxiu explained, “The person disguised himself. He used extremely tiny and highly poisonous projectiles to shoot the horse and youth, and the wounds could not be seen easily. He walked on stilts and hid this using a long robe. That was why he left no footprints on the sand, was so tall and walked so quickly.” Nevertheless, there were two more lines she did not say aloud, “I know who this person is, because I recognize the way he releases projectiles. I have already found wounds caused by the projectiles on the bodies of the horse and the youth.”

These explanations were logical, but it was difficult for the others to accept them immediately. At this point, old man Ji reached them, and slowly said, “I know it’s an extremely powerful evil demon inside, so everyone should not enter the labyrinth, so as not to lose their lives needlessly. I am a old man, mark my words.” Su Pu said, “Even if it is an evil demon, even if it is a person, I will still go and rescue A’man.” He hoped that the evil demon was really a person in disguise as Li Wenxiu had described, then he would have a greater chance to rescue A’man. He turned the door rings again, and this time, the doors opened.

Li Wenxiu said, “I will go with you.” Su Pu turned, his heart filling with gratitude, and advised, “Hero Li, you’d better not go in, it’s very dangerous.” Li Wenxiu insisted, “It is all right, with my company, it will not be dangerous.” Su Pu’s eyes filled with hot tears, and said in a trembling voice, “Thank you, thank you very much.” Li Wenxiu thought, “You’re only so grateful to me just because of A’man.” Turning to old man Ji she said, “Grandfather Ji, you wait for me here.” Old man Ji replied, “No! I will accompany you in; that…… that man is extremely vicious.” Li Wenxiu said, “You’re advanced in your years, and do not know martial arts, just wait for me outside. I won’t be in any danger.” Old man Ji explained, “You don’t know that it is extremely dangerous. I want to take care of you.” Unable to persuade him otherwise, she thought, “How can you take care of me? I think it is more of the other way around.” The five of them lighted torches, and went into the labyrinth using the path trod previously.

They walked round and round for a long time. Su Pu continuously yelled, “A’man, A’man, where are you?” He did not get any response. Li Wenxiu thought, “This should scare him off.” Aloud she said, “Let’s all shout loudly together, that large batches of people and horses are here to save her. We might be able to scare that evil man off.” Su Lu’ke, Che Erku and Su Pu shouted as she told them to, “A’man, A’man, don’t be afraid, our reinforcements are here to save you!” The rooms in the labyrinth were empty, and the sounds echoed in all four directions.

After walking a while more, they suddenly heard a woman shriek loudly. It sounded like A’man. Su Pu ran in the direction of the sound. Pushing open a door, he saw A’man crouched in the corner of the room, her hands tied behind her back. Both of them were surprised and overjoyed to see each other, and cried out in delight.

Su Pu rushed to untie her binds, asking, “Where’s that evil demon?” A’man replied, “He’s not a demon, it’s a person. He was still here just now, but after hearing your voices, he wanted to escape with me, but I struggled with all my might. He heard that there were many of you, he hastily escaped.” Su Pu sighed in relief, then asked, “What…… what kind of person is he? Why did he capture you?” A’man said, “He blindfolded me all the way here. It was also extremely dark in the labyrinth so I never got to see his face.” Su Pu turned to look at Li Wenxiu, his eyes brimming with gratitude.

A’man turned to Che Erku and said, “Father, this person said his name is Waerlaqi, do you know……” Before she could finish, Che Erku and Su Lu’ke cried out in unison, “Waerlaqi!” That they said his name together clearly demonstrated that not only did they know Waerlaqi, they were also very familiar with him.

Che Erku said, “This person is Waerlaqi? That can’t possibly be. He said himself that he was called Waerlaqi? Did you hear wrongly?” A’man replied, “He said he knew my mother.” Su Lu’ke said, “Then it must be true, it’s the real Waerlaqi.” Che Erku muttered, “He knew your mother? He’s Waerlaqi? How…… how could he have become a demon in the labyrinth?” A’man said, “He’s not a demon, he’s a person. He said he liked my mother from young, but my mother was blind and married my father, a great bastard…… Ayo, Father, don’t get angry, it was said by that bad man.” Su Lu’ke laughed uproariously and said, “Waerlaqi is a bad man, but this sentence is perfectly right, your father is indeed a great bast……” Che Erku sent his fist over. Su Lu’ke laughed and avoided it, continuing, “Waerlaqi competed with your father for your mother, but lost. He is not a good man. He took a knife and tried to kill your father in the middle of the night. See, there’s a scar next to his ear. That was caused by Waerlaqi.” Everyone turned to look at Che Erku, and saw that he did indeed have a long scar next to his left ear. Everyone had seen this scar a long time ago, but did not know how he had gotten it.

HK47: Now do you understand the travails of my existence master? Surely it does not compare to your existence but still...
    You: I survive somehow
HK47: As do I. It is our lot in life I suppose master. Shall we find something to kill to cheer ourselves up?

A’man held her father’s hand, and gently said, “Father, were you seriously injured then?” Che Erku replied, “Although your father was ambushed by him, I still managed to defeat him. I threw him on the ground and tied him up.” As he spoke this, his voice filled with pride, and continued, “The next day, the headman gathered all the tribesmen and announced that this bad man was to be exiled from our tribe, and disallowed from ever returning; if he returned secretly, he would be put to death. Thus we have not seen him since then. What was this fellow hiding in the labyrinth for? How were you captured by him?” A’man recounted, “This morning, just before daybreak, I woke up and went to the forest to urinate. Who knows that that bad man was hiding there, and he suddenly leapt over and pressed my mouth shut. Then he carried me here. He said that since he could not have my mother, he wanted me to replace her instead. I begged him to let me return, and said that since my mum didn’t like him, I wouldn’t like him either. He said, ‘Like it or not, you are mine now. None of those timid little Kazaks will dare to enter the labyrinth and rescue you.’ He was wrong; Father, Uncle Su Lu’ke, you are all heroes, and Hero Li, Su Pu and Grandfather Ji are all here, fortunately you all came to save me.”

Che Erku said in a voice full of hatred: “He murdered Luo Tuo and Sang Si’er, let’s go after him at once, catch him and put him to death.” Li Wenxiu had originally thought of who this person disguised as an evil demon was, but it turned out that her guess was completely wrong. She could not help but feel ashamed of herself for wronging a good person. Fortunately, her mouth had not spoken the thoughts in her heart. Then she thought, “How come this Kazak man also knows how to fire poisoned needles? And fire them in exactly the same way? Don’t tell me he also learnt it from my master?” Once Su Lu’ke and the others realized that the demon was Waerlaqi in disguise, they no longer had any fear in their hearts. Furthermore, his martial arts were ordinary. Once they met, he would be captured immediately. Che Erku was determined to avenge his slain disciples. Lifting his torch high, he went first.

Old man Ji tugged at Li Wenxiu’s sleeve. In a low voice he said, “This matter involves only members of their tribe, we don’t need to bother about them, let’s wait for them outside.” Li Wenxiu gave him a gentle smile and assured him, “This matter is about to come to an end, you don’t need to worry.” Old man Ji walked shoulder-to-shoulder with her and said, “This matter is about to come to an end, after it has ended, I want to return to the Central Plains. A’xiu, will you return with me?”

A pang of sadness crossed her heart. The situation in her homeland was long reduced to a vague shadow in her heart. She had lived on this great grassland for twelve years, and loved the strong winds, heavy snowfall, yellow sand, vast and boundless plains, cows and goats and the Tianling bird’s song in the night…… Old man Ji saw that she did not answer, and added, “We Hans living in the Central Plains lead a far better life than here. We dress well and eat well. Your Grandfather Ji has saved some money, so when we return, we can lead a comfortable life. The colourful world of the Central Plains is a hundred times more prosperous than it is here, that is really the life one should lead.” Li Wenxiu asked, “If the Central Plains are so great, why didn’t you go back all this time?” Old man Ji was taken aback for a moment. Taking a few steps, he slowly said, “I have an enemy in the Central Plains, and came to the Muslim Region just to avoid trouble. After so many years, that enemy must’ve died. A’xiu, let’s wait for them outside.” Li Wenxiu answered, “No, Grandfather Ji, let’s walk faster, or we’ll fall far behind them.” Old man Ji made a series of “mm, mm”, but his feet did not quicken a single pace. Seeing that he was aged, she did not have the heart to hurry him.

Old man Ji said, “Once we’ve returned to the Central Plains, we’ll go and live in Jiangnan. We’ll buy a house and plant willows and peach trees around it, tree next to tree. When spring comes, there will be red peach blossoms, green willows and black swallows flitting under the willow branches. A’xiu, we’ll also dig a big fishpond, and rear goldfish, gold ones, red ones, silver ones, white ones and yellow ones; you’ll be very happy…… it’ll be better than living here……” Li Wenxiu shook her head slowly and thought, “No matter how much better Jiangnan is, I still prefer living here, but…… This matter is about to come to an end, after that Su Pu will marry A’man, then they will have a grand barbecued goat gathering, wrestling competitions, singing and dancing around the fire……” She lifted her head and replied, “All right, Grandfather Ji, after we get home, we’ll start our journey back to the Central Plains the next day.” Immediately, Old man Ji’s eyes shone brightly with incredible happiness, and loudly said, “That’s great! After we get home, we’ll start our journey back to the Central Plains the next day.” Suddenly, Li Wenxiu began to pity that Waerlaqi. He was unable to win his beloved, was exiled from his own tribe and led a lonely existence in this labyrinth. A’man was eighteen, so he must have lived in the labyrinth for two decades, perhaps even more.

“Waerlaqi! Stop right there!” Suddenly Che Erku’s angry shouts were heard coming from in front. Li Wenxiu did not bother to wait for old man Ji anymore, and rushed hurriedly towards the sounds.

They walked to the entrance of a great hall, only to see someone jumping high and crouching low, duelling furiously with a sabre-wielding Che Erku. That person was empty-handed, wearing a long white robe, and on his head a white covering which revealed only his two eyes. The covering and long robe were stained with blood, and were exactly the clothes worn by the person disguising himself as the evil demon for the past two nights. It must be the person who abducted A’man, Waerlaqi. Only this time he did not walk on stilts, the ends of his robe folded upwards into his waist.

Su Lu’ke and Su Pu saw that Che Erku held a sabre but the other party was unarmed, and concluded that he would definitely win. So they did not go forward tohelp, but instead lifted their torches up high and kept yelling to intimidate.

Li Wenxiu noted the strokes, and upon realizing something was up, called out, “Be careful!” She was about to strike when there was a bang, and Che Erku received a blow to his right chest. He spat out blood and flew backwards. Su Lu’ke and his son were shocked. Throwing down their torches, they drew their sabres and went forward, attacking the enemy together. The two torches burnt out on the ground, and the hall plunged into darkness and things could be barely seen.

Li Wenxiu carried the meteor hammer and called out, “Su Pu, get back! Uncle Su Lu’ke, get back, let me fight him.” Su Lu’ke angrily said, “You get back, stop shouting and calling.” He wielded his sabre strongly, creating winds. His Kazak sabreplay was different but still extremely ruthless and powerful. Waerlaqi’s movements were totally agile. Suddenly, his leg flew out, and kicked away the sabre in Su Pu’s hand.

Li Wenxiu threw the meteor hammer on the ground and leapt forward, catching the sabre in midair. With two strokes, she sent her sabre towards Waerlaqi. Her master had only taught her the strokes for arms and legs and the meteor hammer, but not for the sabre. At this point, all four of them were engaged in close combat, and because her hammer skills had not yet reached the peak of perfection, using the meteor hammer to fight would probably hurt Su Lu’ke and his son. So she was reduced to enveloping her sabre strokes with kicks and punches, and concentrated on this. Su Lu’ke, having lost his weapon, struck out with his fists.

Waerlaqi was outnumbered three to one, but remained on the upper hand.

After duelling for over ten rounds, Waerlaqi gave a shout, and sent his left fist out, hitting Su Pu squarely in the nose; then sent a leg out, kicking Su Lu’ke in the stomach. Su Lu’ke and his son fell down one after the other, and were unable to get up after that. Waerlaqi’s kicks and punches contained deep internal energy, so whoever received his blows would find it hard to withstand them. Although Su Lu’ke was brave, and also well-built, he could not withstand them either.

With this turn of events, Li Wenxiu was the only one battling the strong enemy. She was weak and incompetent on both sides, and immediately fell into the losing end.

Waerlaqi cried, “Get out at once, and I’ll spare your puny little life.” Li Wenxiu saw that if she stepped back and escaped, she would probably be able to pull only old man Ji along with her. The three others would likely suffer a horrible fate. So she overcame her fear and battled with all her might. Waerlaqi swung his left hand and Li Wenxiu darted to the right. But who knew that this was a false move? His right palm then came flying downwards, and hit her right shoulder squarely with a loud bump. Li Wenxiu lost her balance, and nearly fell down. A thought suddenly struck her: “This stroke is ‘Sounding East, Striking West’; Master taught it to me, how could I have forgotten?” Waerlaqi called, “If you still don’t leave, I’m going to kill you!” Li Wenxiu suddenly considered giving up, and answered, “Kill me then, if you want!” She leapt forward, and in a matter of strokes, was punched in the waist. It was so painful that she dropped her sabre and crouched on the ground. In her heart she cried, “I’m going to die!” There was a sudden whoosh next to her, and someone pounced on Waerlaqi.

Li Wenxiu rolled over on the ground once. Turning back to look, she could not believe her eyes: old man Ji held a dagger in his right hand, and unleashing a few strokes, started to duel with Waerlaqi. Old man Ji’s movements were strong and agile, and he sent out his strokes like the wind, with not a single hint of age and frailty.

What was more amazing was that every time old man Ji lifted his hand or stretched his leg, his strokes were exactly the same as Waerlaqi, which were the martial arts that her master Hua Hui had imparted to her. Li Wenxiu quickly realized, “Ah, the martial arts of the Central Plains are all like that. Grandfather Ji and this Kazak baddie both learnt martial arts from the Central Plains before. I never knew that Grandfather Ji actually knew martial arts.” They started to duel more and more furiously, then Waerlaqi sharply called out, “Ma Jiajun, how are you!” Old man Ji trembled and took a step back. Waerlaqi swung his left hand out, displaying half of ‘Sounding East, Striking West’. But old man Ji did not fall into his trap, and sent his dagger towards the right. Who knew that Waerlaqi did not complete the next half of ‘Sounding East, Striking West’. Instead, his left hand came rushing down and grabbed old man Ji’s face, pulling the skin off his face roughly.

Li Wenxiu, Su Lu’ke and A’man all shrieked loudly, and Li Wenxiu nearly fainted.

Waerlaqi jumped up, sent his left leg out, followed by his right in a series of kicks to old man Ji’s body. At this point, there was a flash of white. Old man Ji released his dagger. It shot out and lodged itself in the enemy’s stomach.

Waerlaqi cried in pain. His two fists struck out ‘Five Thunders Crashing The Roof’ and crashed down on old man Ji’s head. Li Wenxiu knew that if these two fists hit their target, old man Ji would not be able to survive. So she mustered up all her strength, leapt over and blocked Waerlaqi with her arms. There was a loud crack and her arms were so shaken that they seemed to be broken. In that instant, both of them were caught in an impasse: Waerlaqi was unable to bring his fists down, and neither was Li Wenxiu able to fend off his attack.

At this point, Su Lu’ke was able to move again. Jumping to his feet, he mustered all his strength and punched Waerlaqi’s jaw. Waerlaqi fell backwards, hit the wall, and collapsed on the ground.

Li Wenxiu cried, “Grandfather Ji, Grandfather Ji.” She helped him up, eyes closed and not daring to look, as she expected his face to be raw, bloody and terrifying. When she opened her eyes, what she saw was the face of a man in his prime. Taken aback, her eyes opened wider. His face was cleanly shaven, and his features were handsome. Under the illumination of the flickering torches, his face looked deathly pale and bloodless. He was no more than thirty years old. Only his eyes were what she had been familiar with. But on this completely unfamiliar face, they looked indescribably spooky.

Li Wenxiu was stunned for quite a while, before giving a shocked gasp. She pushed old man Ji’s body away and leapt backwards. She had suffered injuries from punches and kicks, so when she landed on her unstable feet, they gave way and she sat down, muttering, “You…… you……” Old man Ji said, “I…… I’m not your Grandfather Ji, I…… I……” Suddenly, he spat out a huge mouthful of blood and said, “That’s right, I am Ma Jiajun, and I was disguised as a old man all this time. A’xiu, you won’t blame me?” This term “A’xiu”, was said with full of kindness and concern, as it had been for the past decade.

Li Wenxiu assured, “I don’t blame you, of course I don’t blame you. You’ve always treated me very very well.” She glanced at Ma Jiajun, then at Waerlaqi, who was leaning on the wall; her heart full of confusion.
