Asia’s number 1 star racer
Jimmy Lin and his speed life
Jimmy Lin, the Little Whirlwind’s road to success was rather smooth. Maybe only then 5th and 6th graders have some memory of his explosive debut. He has done well in singing and acting. He excels even in the racing world. However, time has not made its marks on his face. He has spent most of his time working in China. He returned to Taiwan recently to act in his first modern idol series with his racing spirit.
In the past few years we only see him as an actor. He has switched gear after returning from the army. He played more or less the same young man roles in most of his past series and movies. Recently he has tried to change into a more mature image with his racing career and movies. He wants his first modern idol series to be his representative work in this new era. He joined the cast of Fang Yang De Xing Xing because he also believes in SanLih’s ability in promoting idol series.
Can you tell us what is so attractive about Fang Yang De Xing Xing?
I believe in the script and the production crew. These are the formula for success. And SanLih is also strong in promoting idol series. This series involves car racing. I feel that it is written for me. My character is the 2nd generation of a jewelry corporation. He is very different from the roles I played before. He is more mature and worldly. He comes from a wealthy background that makes him arrogant and kind of bad. This is a big change for me. There is a major challenge for me near the end. I will change some of my little habits and will be more mature and reserved. Because of the storyline I can show off my driving and chasing skills. I can also say that the resources I am able to procure are quite plentiful.
Do you need to spend time on your racing career?
Racing is part of my career, and it is as important. Since there are no races between December and March I can concentrate on filming. When racing starts I will be busy. I am able to schedule my time quite well in the past. There is no time conflict between my entertaining and racing careers.
What sparked your interests in machines?
I became interested in racing since I was young. I liked to take apart machines and put them back together. I was always the first one in my family to be able to use a new cell phone, remote control, etc. I was also interested in handling cars so why not get into the business?
Any books or scifi movies that sparked your interests?
I think it is curiosity. I was interested in comic books when I was a kid. I got interested in any new and interesting technologies. I will try any new 3C products. I am very generous in buying computers, digital cameras, and MP3 players.
How do you manage your style?
I care about my onscreen image. I choose simple clothes off-screen. I don’t chase brand names. I like to put anything that relates to racing on my clothes, like checkered flag and chains. I like others to know that I am in love with speed. I created my own brand, JR, with clothing and accessories that relate to racing.
You travel to China a lot for filming and racing. Which city gave you the best impression?
I like Shanghai the most because the weather is like Taiwan. I have houses in Shanghai and Beijing. I spend a lot of time in Shanghai. I usually go to Shanghai first then travel to other places. I left all my clothes there. Because of filming and racing I get to travel to some remote places. Even though it is for work I was surprised by some of the places I have been to.
What are some of your investments?
I have houses in China. I just opened a restaurant in Taipei. Opening a restaurant is something that I always wanted. I already knew about racing too well. I have a racing consultant company, a car dealership, and a school to provide a practice ground for students and team. I also formed a racing team last year and it won 3rd place in China Rally. A lot of my investments came from my interest in cars.
What kind of cars do you like?
I like the power of a car. The appearance is also important, like antique cars, Hummer, sports cars. I like many models. I also have motorcycle, bicycles, not just sports cars, Hummer, SUV. I always remodel a car after I buy it, but not necessary to make it unique.
What do you like to drive most?
It depends on what I wear. I must drive a different car everyday. Cars have life. You have to let them run free. They are like pets that need to be taken out. They treat you the way you treat them. If you drive them often they won’t have problems. If you change drivers then strange things happen.
You always try to have breakthroughs in your career. What is your next step?
What I ask of myself is to continuously exceed my own expectations. Life is like racing. You need to know when to accelerate, slow down, or overtake an opponent. When an opponent is behind you trying to distract you… You need to choose your right path. I will be very happy when I can exceed myself in races. I just got my commercial yacht license. When I have the time I will go get a truck license. I think a license is a proof of my ability. (What about your love life?) This is the time for my career. Maybe after 35. I am not an emotional person. I spend a lot more time on myself
