Ouf, that was indeed stressful. I'm surprised I'm still alive. We were darn lucky to win this one. The Czechs dominated the whole game and were much better than us but somehow, we managed to win. I think it will be easier against Finland although you'll never know.

i was just talkin to my friend today and he made a good point. many europeans dislike american (and our teams) becuz all their best players come over to NA to play in the NHL. they feel dat we stole their players. dat could be y they dont like us. u make it sounds like they are all evil and they have social problems

the jagr i watched in the WC isnt determined. hes not skating hard, not making the good plays that hes capable of, always end up on his butt somehow, and generally look uninterested. he also said he would rather be somewhere else, which tells u as much as u need to know about his attitude toward this whole turny. if he really tries, hes one guy who can carry his team to the final.

i dunno whats wrong w/ canada today, its like we get stuck in our zone alot! we lost lots of puck battles and races. hopefully its just their "bad" game of the turny, get it over w/ so they'll play better against the fins.

luongo scared the heck out of me. i know he stop like 37 shots, but he looks lost on a couple of them. seems like he lost track of the puck a few times, just to find it at the last second to make the save.

i think the fins will be less offensive, but not easier. they are the calgary flames(kipper in net, solid if unspectacular group of D, 1 scoring line, lots of pests and grinders), and canada is the tb lightning (deep offensively talented team, good speed). hopefully the result will be the same as the SC finals.

Your friend is partially right but it's not just that. My thoughts are mostly targeted towards the Eastern European hockey fans (not the general population). Swedes and Finns are fine. Many respect North American hockey and often can admit that we have good players. There are Swedes and Finns who have Canadian players as among their favorites, but I have NEVER heard an Eastern European fan liking a North American player, EVER. Don't believe me if you wish but I know what I'm talking about. I have a collegue who lived for years in Russia and he concur with my reasoning and he's someone who likes Russians and find them very nice people. As hockey fans though, they hate us and it's mostly due to their social and political upbringing. How do you explain that the Swedes and the Finns don't have the same mentality while they too lose many of their players to the NHL? The answer is right in front of you. If you don't believe me, just have some discussion with them. Until you do that, you won't understand them.

As for Jagr, I thought he played really hard. Don't forget that he has a lower body injury at the right now. Also, when he was at his prime in the NHL, his opponent were much less talented than the Team Canada he was facing yesterday so of course he didn't looked as dangerous as what you used to see him in the NHL. Yes at first he said that he'd rather be somewhere else but you know why? It's because Czechs and Russians don't consider the World Cup or the Canada Cup important. I told you that they don't respect North Americans. I also read a translated article from the former CCCP coach Tikhonov who said that the Canada Cup (now the World Cup) as biased and not as important as the World Championships. Anyway back to Jagr, he only accepted to play for the national team because the former coach Hlinka peronally asked him to play and not long after, Hlinka died in a car accident. Last night, I'm sure he did his best for the momory of his former coach. Compared to what you see him do in the NHL, it is clear that his effort is not the same.

Hard to believe isn't it? Yet you guys are so easily anti-American. Believe it or not but American fans are quite nice and among the least biased hockey fans I've encountered. Many of them said that they couldn't cheer for their national team because they hated most of the players on the team.

well it's true, the canada cup and world cup is nothing compared to the world championships, cause they don't care, the world cup and canada cup is almost all NA, so it doesn't matter to them and it doesn't happen every year. and jagr got shutdown by our team but we forgot about the other guys on the czech team. and americans hate their own team is because they know their team is old and they are really really brittle. but ne ways, now canada really gotta get their act together for the finals, that is the most important part

wow, this discussion is getting interesting, not to mention off topic

i can understand y the russian hockey fans hated us so much. i think canada and russia have the most intensed rivalry over the history. the summit series, the '86 canada cup (i think its 86 anyways), etc. if u ask any red wing fans or avalanches fans, they'll tell u how much they hate the other team. its becuz of that rivalry. sweden have finland, so thats y they r nicer to us. im not questioning u, just dat i think there are many reasons leading to the "eastern europe's anti-north american" feeling, not just their social upbringing.

wait, r we talkin about the same jagr who got hlinka fired from the penguins? if he like his coach so much, y did jagr say he cant play for hlinka anymore in pittsburg? yea the competition is better at the WC, but great players evaluate their game (like sakic). dont tell me he cant do it cuz he did it b4 at the olympics and other turny. i didnt know he have an injury, but hes been having problems w/ his groin for a long time, even back in the days when he was winning art ross trophies.

how am i anti-americans? its true i dont like them, but dat alone cant make me an anti american rite?

I don't think we're going off topic at all since we have not deviated from hockey. The Russians are just one exemple. The Czechs and Slovaks hate us as much. What you still don't get is that Eastern European fans have not a single drop of respect for anything North American. Sure Swedes and Finns are rivals and therefore have less reason to hate us, but then what can you say about the Czechs and Slovaks. They have never been big rivals until Nagano but the disrespect comes from way back. Should I repeat that I have never heard any Eastern European fan like a North American player? I'm not exagerrating when I say NEVER. And btw, I have never said that their upbringing is the only reason but it is a major reason. All the reasons you have given are valid but you still don't realise the level of their hatred towards Canadian hockey.

As for Jagr, well think what you want to think. I see a lot more of effort when he plays for his country than for his NHL club. Regarding his injury, I'm talking about a more recent injury. Don't believe me? Read this: http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Hockey/Wor...10/623560.html. You clearly are not up to date with news about why Jagr accepted to play in this turney. Just go read some recent past news if you have time to waste because clearly you don't believe me.

Not liking Americans is being anti-American in my book, like I'm definitely anti-Eastern European. Of course, I'm only talking within the hockey domain here.

I guess we're not many Canadians. I'm happy for the Finns to have gotten this far. This is HUGE in Finland right now. They say it's one of the best things that ever happened to Finnish hockey. I also feel bad for the Czechs. Yes you read me right, I feel bad for them because clearly, they were better than us last night. It's kind of unfair when a team plays so well yet still loses. Like Havlat said, "the better team lost."

mabbe its just me but im detecting some level of anger toward me in this post
honestly, i've never talk hockey to a eastern european b4, so i have no place to disagree to what u say. mabbe ur rite, mabbe they do hate us w/ all their heart and disrespect everything north american. im not tryin to defend them, just tryin to add another angel to the discussion. anyways, this mite be a good time to drop this discussion, i've never experience it and i have nothing else to add.

i've never said i dont believe u, im saying that im seeing a jagr whos not trying his best. just becuz hes workin harder here than he does for his nhl club (which is dabatable from some of the washington/NYR games last yr) doesnt mean anything, cuz hes just floating out there in the nhl to cash in his paycheque. i dont doubt hes injured, mabbe its severe i dunno, but we clearly have differing opinions of his play so lets just leave it at that.

to me, anti american is to hate american in everything (as an extreme example, terrorists from middle east would be consider anti american). i just dislike their hockey team so i dont think i should count. u can call me whatever u want, but anti american just sounds so....whatever.

james: where have u been buddy? dont cu posting here for awhile! anyways, if its true hockey fans, then 4 is enuff, dont u think? go canada go!

trizz: i would've love for us to beat USA too, but as long as they r out im happy

canuck: some called it the biggest win in finland history (against the USA team). personally i think dats bull crap, beating the americans dont mean they won the WC, they have won WJC and world championship, also winning bronze in the '98 olympics is huge too. as to feeling sorry for the czech, no way no how. sure they were the better team and they lost, but all i can say is what goes around comes around. if u remember the '98 olympics, canada clearly outplay the czech in the semi, but who won the game? did they feel bad for us? hell no! **whats up with this? im being harsh to the czech and canuck feeling sorry for them? sumthings not rite... **

    *whisper* i think she's a spy , jk jk
but ya the finns do consider it the biggest thing they ever did, and the americans sux, ne team can beat them blindfolded, they're old and they are slow, so it's really hard for them, plus they don't have as much elite players as canada who can just pick out a couple ppl in ne nhl team and a large number of them would be canadians

come on now trizz, the americans arent dat bad, they did beat russia remember?
but yeah, they are definitely in a transition period. most of their big-name stars are old. hull, leclare, chelios, amonte, roenick, all would be unlikely to play at the next olympics. other star players they have are either getting too old or on the decline (modano, tkachuk, guerin, leetch). they dont have much top end talent coming up too, so it should be interesting to see how they do in the next few yrs.

anyways, cant wait till tomoro, the final is gonna be awesome. hope the fins dont trap too much tho. lets see some wide open entertaining hockey, cuz who knows when we'll see some of these players again.

i hope they don't trap as much, but agaisnt a super offensive team i think they probably will, and the states have nothing left, i don't think they can be a hockey powerhouse, like russia, czech, sweden, canada ne more, and other countries are on the rise too, finland, slovakia, and germany just needs to develop more talent. so i wouldn't have ne high hopes for the states. and GO CANDA GO 7 mins from the game, oh i can't wait

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY we defended our title as World's Best Hockey Nation, wow that game was exciting, but i was really fustrated everytime the finns scored on us, and kippy was awesome, brodeur i thought wasn't really 100% but it was enuff, and all the lines were terrific so that was a world class game

that was a really good game! brodeur was sorta shaky for the first 2 periods but played so well in the third.
favorite goal was the T. Ruutu one. yes its the opposite team but you have to admit it was very nice.

who did the canucks get sold too?!
and i thought Andreychuk was gonna retire too! he doesnt really do much but hes back for another year~

wow trizz, dat was kinda heartless!! what did he ever do 2u? ran over ya cat?

ya the ruutu goal was damn nice, dat and the kovalev goal are 2 of the best i've seen this turny. the nucks are sold to the garlandi family, they own the northland company (sandman hotels, moxie restaurants, denny's restaurants). they bought the nucks and GM place for $250 million. hopefully they wont rename GM place to denny's place or sumthing

kipper looks bad on the second goal, but overall he played well. the game was alot tighter then i expected, specially after we scored less then 1 min in, i thought we would roll over them. pretty fun game to watch, altho there were more dump-and-chase then i expected. looks like this will be the last hockey we'll see for awhile, since the lockout appear to be certain

Angry? Of course not. It may sound so in writing. I'm just trying really hard to convince you that East Europeans are evil... j/k.

i've never said i dont believe u, im saying that im seeing a jagr whos not trying his best. just becuz hes workin harder here than he does for his nhl club (which is dabatable from some of the washington/NYR games last yr) doesnt mean anything, cuz hes just floating out there in the nhl to cash in his paycheque. i dont doubt hes injured, mabbe its severe i dunno, but we clearly have differing opinions of his play so lets just leave it at that.
Well exactly. Jagr is floating in the NHL but he is at least trying when he plays for his country. And frankly, I would want Canadians to try harder when they wear the Canadian jersey too but at least work hard at your job (NHL) nonetheless. Anyway, this is indeed debatable. Each can see things differently.

Ok, anti-American may sound harsh but I think you know what I mean. Let's say they're not your favorite. But you'd be surprised how unbiased and humble they can be sometime but I guess that's because hockey is not their forte. I'd imagine they'd be different if they were actually good.

I didn't think Canada outplayed the Czechs in Nagano. It was only in the 2nd half of the 3rd period and during the overtime that Canada dominated. Earlier, I thought the Czechs were slightly more in control. This time though, it was so apparent that the Czechs were better. I was SCARED most of the game. I feel kind of bad for the Czechs but trust me, it's not preventing me from sleeping.

As for the Finns, they consider reaching the final game of the World Cup as their biggest achievement so far. They did say that their win over the USA is only a minor miracle and the winning the World Cup would be the real miracle. WJC and World Championships are nowhere as important as the World Cup and definitly not the Olympics. They did won the Bronze in Nagano but that's 3rd place. When you're in the final, you're and least 2nd best.
