Watch him flash that irresistible smile!!!

My only grouse is that the video is small and there's no option for screen size.

His pics didn't really appeal to me, but I find him to be attractive onscreen, especially his eyes and the smile that complements so well.

BTW, that stew looks really yummy.

Haha. Thanks Grifis. I totally heart this particular image of Shosuke. We shall fill this thread with lots and lots of pictures and juicy information.

And, more updates on Shosuke's activities next year! He will appear in a Fuji TV drama special, Akechi Mitsuhide ~ Kami ni Aisarenakatta Otoko (Akechi Mitsuhide ~ The Man Who Wasn't Loved By God) on 4 January. Karasawa Toshiaki stars in the title role in this period drama about Akechi Mitsuhide, a trusted aide of Oda Nobunaga, during the Sengoku period and probably best known as the man who betrayed Nobunaga and caused his death. Shosuke plays Ashikaga Yoshiaki, the last shogun of the Ashikaga shogunate, which was eventually destroyed by Nobunaga.

Other cast include Kamikawa Takaya as Oda Nobunaga, Kagawa Teruyuki as Mitsuhide's rival, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Nagasawa Masami as Mitsuhide's wife Hiroko.

oh boy the infamous mustache of ancient men. He certainly looks no where as good as he did in Shinsengumi. But you know jade, I'm just glad he's in the picture along with the cast. That means his role is kind of big.

    Haha I hope so!

I just found out that Shosuke starred in a play as recently as August alongside Eri Fukatsu and Mikami Hiroshi. It is the Japanese version of a play 'Tis A Pity She's A ***** by John Ford and is called Aware Kanojo wa Shofu. A rather warped tragedy about a sister, Anabella, and brother, Giovanni, involved in an incestuous relationship initiated by Giovanni who lusted for her and lied that the relationship was permissible. Although Anabella has several suitors, including Soranazo, she and Giovanni consummate their relationship which eventually results in Anabella's pregnancy. Anabella marries Soranazo, who loves her, to try conceal this incest but he eventually realises the truth of the matter and wants her put to death. The events then take on a macabre, grim ending. http://www.wowow.co.jp/stage/aware/

Shosuke played Soranazo to Eri's Anabella. Unfortunately the website doesn't have any promotional materials or images but you can listen to their interviews at this site: http://www.bunkamura.co.jp/shokai/co...interview.html

jade, I'm considering to take into possession of these two titles (that he's starring don't know if large or small role):

Shinkokyu no Hitsuyo: From the description the content sounds like something that I'll like. You heard of this?
    http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=BCBJ-2038

Aegis: I heard it's not that great but Shosuke looks hot in the navy uniform.
    You know about this one?

    *SPOILERS*
Haha sugarcane vs warcraft or is it the Maritime Self-Defense Force vs Okinawa travel bureau? Hmm, I personally think Shinkokyu no Hitsuyo (http://search.japantimes.co.jp/cgi-bin/ff20040526a2.htm) will be better than Aegis (http://search.japantimes.co.jp/cgi-bin/ff20050803a2.htm). I saw the trailer for Shinkokyu no Hitsuyo and it looks a rather simple and enjoyable movie about people refreshing their souls in Okinawa. Aegis was shown on tv when I was in Japan and I thought it was quite a plodding movie that didn't really make sense. There are North Korea terrorists who speak terrific Japanese and mutinuous crew members. The fight scenes are mostly silly. The scenes on the Aegis are interspersed with scenes of worried bureaucrats wondering how to prevent the vessel from plowing into Tokyo Bay. Shosuke does look hot in uniform. He doesn't have much screen time, but somehow his role was quite memorable even though he died in the end. It's probably because he died while doing a heroic act.

    Will you buy both?

I was going to get both but the sugarcane story was not avail. at yesasia. I prefer to order from yesasia. So in the end I decided to wait. I ordered waterboys instead (the 2 dvds version.)

    Akechi Mitsuhide airs tonight!

Here's a translation of Shosuke's interview for his role in Akechi Mitsuhide. I hope it sounds decent.

Shosuke's Interview for his role as Ashikaga Yoshiaki in Akechi Mitsuhide ~ Kami ni Aisarenakatta Otoko

    1. Please tell us your thoughts when word came that you'd be acting in this drama special.
I thought it interesting to land a role in Akechi Mitsuhide because the script, and the distinction between Mitsuhide and Hideyoshi was intriguing. All this while, when we speak of either of the two historical figures, I believe that while there were exchanges between Mitsuhide and Hideyoshi from Nobunaga's perspective, there hasn't been one that portrays things from Mitsuhide's viewpoint, which makes this very fascinating.

    2. How was the atmosphere on the set?
Because I liked 'Shiroi Kyoto' very much, and I thought it would be great if I could work together with Nishitani (the director) someday, I was very tense on the set. It was immensely enjoyable as he was charismatic, and also had an interesting production plan and persuasive powers.

    3. Did the director say anything to you before the start of filming?
This time the character I played, Ashikaga Yoshiaki, was an eccentric so there was a high level of tension. While it was easy, it needed a lot of power and energy. The director told me, "I think the character, Yoshiaki, cannot be saved. Other characters will ultimately be given salvation, but I don't want to give that to Yoshiaki." I thought about the director's words...Wasn't the Ashikaga shogun Japan's supreme ruler? But the truth was that the real power had already shifted to Nobunaga ... At that time, Mitsuhide served him; he only confided his real intentions and grouses to Mitsuhide. He probably thought he could pour all out. But, on the contrary, this was emotional dependence. In the end, the loneliness he felt when Mitsuhide, the only close confidant by his side, left him, was like that of a child who kept on saying willful things. Nobunaga, who held the real power, laid various schemes to take the castle but whatever he did in the end was not good. Therefore, I set my heart on being a smart though small, shallow, unlikable fellow. I wanted to be a person who lacked a shard of personal charisma, whose measured words kept a distance.

    4. How did you feel when acting Yoshiaki's final scene?
It was enjoyable. Yoshiaki was truly lonely when Mitsuhide first defiantly turned around and walked out on him. While I thought he reaped what he sowed, I also thought his life was already over ... that said, various emotions jumbled up and when I saw that objectively, a sorrowful smile sprung to my lips. I somewhat relished the role of this man who did nothing. Also, each scene is face to face with Mitsuhide but the tension in those progress step by step. I hope viewers will see those changes.

I presume the Chinese sites will have the drama. We'll just have to wait and see.

I see you've been busy spending time with the hubby over the year end. I will try my hand at translating those clips. Meanwhile, here's a translation of a not so recent interview which I found interesting.

City Wave's 'I want to Meet This Person' segment: Interview with Shosuke Tanihara
    October 2003

Undoubtedly stylish, the word "smart" fits Tanihara Shosuke's poise and elocution. Shosuke, who has hitherto played many sophisticated roles, takes on the challenge of detective Kanzaki - a man bent on revenge - in this autumn's movie, Sky High. He reflects on Kanzaki who loses his beloved fiance on the day of their wedding even though he's a detective, and his desperate run in search of the malicious killer.

"It was difficult to portray that magma-like hatred and bitterness boiling in Kanzaki's heart because in reality I couldn't mentally see and understand murderous hatred. Therefore, no matter how much I imagined, I just didn't have the confidence to say, 'This is it!' Finally, rather than express these emerging emotions one by one, I focused on showing how Kanzaki didn't change deep within despite what happened to him, and made that the core. I wonder whether it will appeal to people who see this bit."

Nevertheless, to Shosuke, this challenge gives him a sense of pleasure as an actor. "This work is like grasping mist. For a brief moment, I'd think I laid my hands on it myself! That's not just my personal effort but also that of my fellow actors and the staff; when everything falls in place and materialises for the first time ... there won't be another moment like this. For just that reason, I get immense pleasure when I seize the moment. I think I act in order to savour this joy."

Shosuke also appears in a Hong Kong movie this year, stars in NHK's taiga Shinsengumi next year, and continues to be active in many areas. His motto is not to stick to genres. "For television, even if there is a viewership of 1 percent, it means 1.2 million people are watching, which makes it the most powerful genre. But for films there are no restrictions in terms of expression, moreover, because performances are repeated over and over again for theatre, my acting can grow. As a result of these advantages, I want to be an actor who has the freedom to move around."

Hiroko Sato, who calls Shosuke an "absolutely ideal man" asks him some questions about his private life.

Hiroko: Your English is good. Do you have any experience studying overseas?

Shosuke: No way! I'm happy to receive such praise but I only speak a little when hanging out with my friends from overseas. (laughs)

Hiroko. Has anything changed as you entered your 30s?

Shosuke: Because I rear a dog, I guess my feelings are directed towards something other than myself. Even when I'm having fun with friends, I'll say, "I'm feeding Dera (name of dog)," and go home. (laughs)

Nice translation jade. I think he really grows as an actor however I don't think he's very good with comical roles as he is with serious roles. I saw him in Ooku: hana no ran and I thought he did a wonderful job. He left me an impression at the scene when he broke down and told Uchiyama's char (main girl) about his childhood and his experience with his mother. That was a good performance. It was heartfelt and though his character wasn't any good in that drama I just couldn't bring myself to hate him.

I'm really curious as to how good his English is. If only I get to hear it more. With the few words I heard him speaking to that HK actress (whom I can't recall the name now), the pronounciation is very good. With his rich and smooth voice, it sounds like music to the ears. Greatness!

I understand his sentiment as I'm also entering my 30s but I haven't yet directed my feelings toward something other than myself. Though I love pets, I can't see myself taking care of them. He surely is a good man, so affectionate desu yo ne!

Haha I try my best. I think I take liberties with the text sometimes. Especially when it's clear to me that the words don't convey as literal a meaning as they seem.

Similar thoughts too. I find him more adept at playing serious roles but I guess he'll have his chance to show us what he's capable of in Erai Tokoro ni Yomeide Shimatta. Oh Akechi is available at D-Addicts thanks to gryzze. Unsubbed of course.

Yes, I agree!!!!!!! Shosuke only appears in ep8 of Koi no Chikara but I was so taken with his voice that I was just willing against hope that Eri Fukatsu's character would forget about Tsutsumi Shinichi and her job at the agency and head to Milan with him. Poor guy had his feelings crushed.

He must be trilingual because I know he's been a regular on this NHK programme on conversational Chinese since April last year. Now ain't that cool!

Trilingual? No kidding! I certainly like to hear him speaking chinese too. I can't wait to see that new series with him playing the good hubby. As for Akechi, I'm downloading directly from newsgroup which is much faster.

Heh. Well, maybe almost trilingual. NHK's website on Chuugokugo Kaiwa: http://www.nhk.or.jp/gogaku/chinese/program.html unfortunately there aren't any video clips of Shosuke in action.
