    Greetings from Indonesia!
Thanks a million to Uchi for all the hard work and time you put into translating for us. Oppa looked a little sad even though he's officially finished his national service.
Oh well, I guess coming to the closure of something in one's life is usually a tad sad, like leaving school. I recall being very happy when I completed my studies, but at the same time, very sad. It's part of the 'moving on' feeling.
I'm traveling much more these days so my participation on the thread is rather sporadic. Appreciate everyone active sharing and constant updating. Things should be more relaxed for me after Christmas.

Default 16.11.06 Yellow Ribbons Time for Song Seung-hun

    From [email protected]

In November 2004, the actors Song Seung-hun and Jang Hyeok bit the bullet and joined up after their attempts to dodge Korea’s mandatory military service were exposed. Twenty-four months later, the two have done their time and were discharged on Wednesday from their unit in Hwacheon, Gangwon Province. Emerging at 7 a.m. to a waiting crowd of some 500 fans and hundreds of reporters from all over Asia, Song was in pensive mood. “Finally a day that always seemed like it would be a great one has come, but when I think about having to split from my brothers in arms who I became close to, I can’t be happy,” Song said. “I made a stupid and immature decision before I entered the Army, and it hurt and disappointed my fans, but I felt that the best way ahead was to live my military life sincerely.” Song, who was part of an artillery battalion as a 155 mm gunner, vowed to “rekindle the fellowship” with the neighbors he became estranged from.

Fans from Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong and of course Korea carried signs that read, “Korea’s best actor,” and “You’ve worked hard for two years.” Overseas fans were bussed in on 15 coaches that left Seoul at 2 a.m. but encountered a blizzard on the way and did not make it to the actor’s press conference until five-and-a-half hours later at around 7:30 a.m. According to those in the know, the fans paid from between 110,000 yen for a simple package to 220,000 yen for the expensive tours to be here for the moment when the actor regained his freedom.
Normally the trip takes around three hours from Seoul, but with the sudden snowfall everyone’s trip that day took at least five. And hearing in advance that there were almost no restrooms at the base the female fans insisted on stopping every now and then at rest stops to take care of their business, which made the trip even longer. Immediately following the press conference, Song headed to Seoul to relax.

But he will be meeting his fans again at a meet’n’greet event at the weekend. There are also plans for another press conference. On Thursday afternoon, an exhibition kicks off at N Seoul Tower of objects that the actor used during his days in the military. His boots, uniform and personal tools -- everything except his gun -- are there for fans to swoon over. Song makes his official return to the celebrity life starting with the Asia Fan Meeting 2006 at the Gymnastics Arena in Olympic Park in Seoul on Nov. 18 and 19 starting at 7 p.m.

(Here is my rough translation for the news article from daum.net posted by Jolee.
I found the writing on this piece of news very fragmented and a bit hard to translate.
It's likely not because of its author, but rather because of my poor knowledge on Korean language. So please bear with me.

Setting language barrier aside, this news article is a full bullet proof of Oppa's internal beauty. I agree with you guys, while it's obvious to see his charms and good look in modeling and screen work captures, the photos taken from the welfare center and the army are most precious as they utter the true values of a man whom he is -- his benevolent heart and his courage to endure hardships.
It’s heartfelt to see on one side, photos of his rugged life in the army, of him shouldering his fellow soldiers, craggy in army uniform, armed with gun, and face painted; and in another, a seraph sitting by the side of those in needs, hand in hand earnestly with an elderly lady.
I recall reading somewhere that the welfare center’s members nicknamed him “Angel”. He deserves it. I would call him the same … )

    Original from: http://news.media.daum.net/entertain...v14734923.html

SSH received a Thank You plaque in secret from the welfare facility in honor of his charities during the past 2 years while he served in military.

    [The economic exchange journalist’s news]

Hallyu star SSH placed a closure on his armed force life on the 15th.
Putting on his army uniform, the place that SSH visited first after leaving his military unit’s gate behind was the social welfare facility in the neighborhood of Victory unit.
This is the place where he had carried out his charity works during the past 2 years while servicing at division 15th in Kangwon-Do Hwach’on. SSH left the facility at 8:00 today morning, then he returned to his awaiting fans. Arriving in a car, there, right on the open field in front of the Victory Hall, SSH gave a 15 minutes speech and press conference to bid goodbye to his army life and to greet his Japanese, Taiwanese, and other overseas fans who had gathered in large crowd to cheer for him.

The “home of blooming loves” (?) welfare institution is located near his army unit. This is where SSH spent many visits to work and to comfort the elders and the people who suffer from severe illnesses. SSH was always received with great welcome there by the facility members and staffs. SSH also entrusted his fans to donate and share their loves for this facility.

SSH said, “Local as well as overseas fans spent lots of their resources to send me letters, presents, and great amount of foods such as chocolates and cakes. It is difficult to manage and to store these goods in the army barracks. Therefore, with approvals from military authorities, I instructed to have these goods to be sent to the welfare institution.”

In addition, SSH donated his monthly salary and the proceeds he earned from selling his MD (musical DVD?) in Japan to this facility. According to the official in charge at the facility, “SSH is going to be greatly missed here by the elders and the children whom he had played with.”

At their goodbye meeting, in celebrating his discharge from military service, the director of the welfare facility said, “Many congratulations, thanks to SSH, and 10000 good wishes for his futures. Whether it was directly from him or from his fans, during the past 2 years, SSH had lent many helps to our facility. Whenever he comes out here, he would chat with the elders, take care of the people who are sick without any reluctance. His benevolence is well conveyed.”

“Meanwhile, we will continue to think of and care for him. Hope that when SSH reemerges in the society, he will show the wonderful image as he has shown to us.”

Before parting, SSH said, “Please stay healthy. Now I need to say goodbye and proceed to go back to Seoul.”

Leaving the welfare facility in the nearby neighborhood, SSH returned to greet more than 1000 of his fans who had crossed hurdles to arrive from Japan, Taiwan, and many other places to come gathered in celebrating SSH.

Started from November 16, 2004, during the 2 years of his enlistment, SSH worked as a gunner at the Victory unit, 102 Chunchon Reserve.

Here is an Mnet's clip of his full speech:

    http://download.yousendit.com/032635DA2D834BA2

And here is translation of his speech by Hong Kye from HL:

How are you? It’s Song Seung Heon. Thank you.
Thanks to God who has been taking care of me for successful discharge without any accident.

And thank you all for coming to see me in such a severely cold and snowing weather. I would like to take this opportunity to appreciate the battalion commander and all staff officers who have been taking care of the safety of the battery during my two years in the army.

And also I would like to appreciate all my fellow soldiers who have shared joys and sorrows with me for two years. I appreciate my parents who have been praying for their youngest son everyday and I sincerely appreciate all my fans who have been supporting me and showing their precious love to me who don’t deserve.

Two years have passed. Every Korean man who enter the army dream of their successful discharge perform their duties with sincerity. I myself also dreamed of today. However today that I expected full of joy only I also feel sorrows for saying goodbye to the beloved artillery battalion and fellow soldiers whom I love.

Frankly I entered the army discouraging people who love me because of my foolish decision and immature behavior. I know the more you expected the more you disappointed. The fact that I enter the army after failing all people who love me burdened me with debt of my heart. I was too sorry to say something.

Therefore only one thing I could do for all who love me was to perform my duties with sincerity, through that, I believe I can ask forgiveness to all who love me.

During my days in the army, I realized that it was a gift and blessing to me to enter the army even though it was late. I guess it sounds conventional to you but I experienced myself the true meaning of words that every men can be grown up after experiencing the army. Those experiences and memories in the army that made me more matured will be great treasure for my life. I realized that God gave me the chance to be reborn as a true man.

But I don’t think all my faults were forgiven by two year army service. From today as a member of society. I will do my best to show you with ideal and matured manners. And I try to help people who were excluded from the society to the best of my poor ability.

The Last I want to tell you that I am proud of all Korean soldiers who defend our country and their beloved family at the very moment and I would like to appreciate for their efforts. I sincerely hope their good health and successful discharge until when they can go back to their family. Pilseung!

Thank you, Uchi. Your translation is really good and thorough. It's a very nice news article. I almost cry reading it and your comment.
One thing that I'm unsure: was this visit happened on the same morning of his discharge? It sounded like he visited this facility first before appeared at the ground where all fans and press media gathered, correct?

Btw. You're so right. SSH deserves to be called "Angel". He really touches hearts from so many.

Reading the article you translated and his speech made me love Oppa even more.

Thanks Uchi. You're so good and nice.
With your obvious excellent writing and language skills, i think Seungheoney is very right that you should become Oppa's spoke person ... plus English or Japanese or Chinese tutor, plus business advisor, and plus script writer. And I mean it
Please don't forget us when you become famous.

You guys are too kind ...

Whew, that's too much responsibilites for me to handle. Please don't slave drive me, Oppa!
Besides, I don't want any of those jobs. The only job that I've been praying for is ... his girlfriend, but no one ever offered and neither did my prayer ever get answered.

Kidding aside, it's my pleasure. The photos you posted compelled me to read the article and therefore I didn't mind to translate.

Anyways, I've been taken lots of time out from my other "main streams" already. Need to get back to 'em. So no more translation for a while please.

The two made an appearance in front of their fans at their respective army divisions--Hwacheon and Cheolwon, both in Gangwon Province.

Some 200 reporters and 500 fans from Korea and abroad waited for Song since early morning. The actor’s fans from Japan, Hong Kong and Thailand, who came to Korea in time for a fan meeting, waited for Song since 4 a.m. despite the snowy weather.

Song will hold large-scale fan meetings November 18-19 at the Olympic Park in Seoul to resume his acting career. The actor says he doesn’t think he has been forgiven for his mistakes and promised to improve in the future.

Song had originally planned to hold a welcome party with his fans immediately after his discharge from the military but had to leave the venue because too many fans flocked to see him.

Meanwhile, Chang has decided to take some time off before resuming his acting career to carefully choose his next production.

Some 30 reporters and staff from his agency waited for Chang in Cheolwon since morning. Chang stayed mostly low-key during his military service. He walked all the way from his division to the checkpoint for an hour and a half because it snowed heavily.

Chang told reporters that he felt relieved and sad at the same time, and had cut his hair short again. He said he planned to implement new resolutions and appeared strongly determined to do his best. He explained he had realized the importance of acting in his life during his military service.

Both actors left their checkpoints with their agency staff and headed home to meet with their families.

Song will soon begin filming a new TV drama, while Chang has yet to choose his next production.

I think they are army pics, not school pics. Look at the orangy color jackets. Same jackets that they worn in other army photos. Lighting and angle of shooting were probably what cause them look younger in those photos.

Yea, besides Oppa, other soldiers look scary and kiddish. Oppa is many years older than other soldiers though.

It's hard to look good when you're in the army. It's just not a place to look polished. Even many mv stars also look bad with army crew cuts. So I'd give them a break!

    $this->handle_bbcode_img_match('http://photo-media.hanmail.net/200611/18/newsen/20061118114313.018.0.jpg')
