What were the Gong Nam 6 Freaks hoping to accomplish on Peach Blossom Island?

What were the Gong Nam 6 Freaks hoping to accomplish when they tried to intercede in the impending showdown between East Heretic Wong Yerk See and the Cheun Jen 6 Disciples on Peach Blossom Island (a decision that resulted in five of them being murdered by West Poison Au Yeung Fung and Yeung Hong)? Their relationship with the Cheun Jen Disciples was good (because of their associations with Ma Yuk and Yau Chui Gei), but their relationship with Wong Yerk See was poor. Even if the Freaks could have talked the Disciples into backing down, they would not have been able to talk Wong Yerk See into backing down. Moreover, what would the Freaks do if the Cheun Jen 6 Disciples and Wong Yerk See decided to resort to violence despite the Freaks' pleas for peace? The Freaks were overmatched by both sides, and could not have broken up the fight if it had come to violence.

The Freaks' intent here was noble enough, but they really weren't in much of a position to do anything.
