See, you don't live in the US and aren't regularly bombarded by their faces on TV. Which is the point: Exposure and recognizability. These women would be faaaar more recognizable to the average person on the streets and subways of New York than Zhang Ziyi or Maggie Cheung (among others) would be; and why both enjoy 'relative' anonymity here. None of the women mentioned above would be able to do what they can -- have the high likelihood of traveling alone in New York without being recognized for who they are.

Really, that applies to celebs of most any race, including whites. I'm sure there are white Australian celebs that are highly recognizable stars in Oz. Yet, if they were to pass by me on the beaches of Miami, I'd think nothing of them. I'd likely never heard of muchless even seen them before. And it would have nothing to do with the copout that all whites look the same. Outside of film circles, that analogy still applies to Zhang Ziyi to the average people in most of the West. But with more and more exposure (particularly TV), that's likely to change in the future..

I guess it's because ABCs have more exposure and recognizability compared to Asian Chinese, that's why Chinese who grew up outside America are not that well-known and are paid less attention to even though they're real famous in the Chinese world.

However, I agree to some extent with NetDriftr that 'all Asians look the same to Westerners' and vice versa. It happens when you don't come into contact with the other races that often and don't take the effort to remember people, which happens with lots of people in the older generation.

I'm quite surprised if ZZY don't get recognized on the streets. She definitely has a star quality that sets her apart from most people.

Exactly my point. It's more about exposure and recognizability than it is about all Chinese looking the same -- which is of course a contradiction. Afterall, how could you both think they look different to Americans (exposure and recognizability) and they look the same to them?

Again, I think this will likely change as Zhang Ziyi (and other Chinese actresses, including Maggie Cheung) get more media exposure, increasing their recognizability, in the West. As is, she (as does Maggie) currently enjoys walking down American streets without being recognized for who she is. That's not the case in China.

I think it's been airbrushed. esp the last picture if you look at it. her skin looks a bit...fake. but they're very nice pictures. I love the second to last one.

I'm just glad that there are chinese faces in Hollywood films - ziyi, Gong Li, Chow Yun Fat, Jackie Chan, Jet Li, REPRESENT!!!!!!!!!

but I really hated that girl (Shu Qi? - think she dated or is dating Leon Lai - girl with the big lips) - she was in one Hollywood film called the Transporter with Jason Statham...I can't stand her in HK films either...

Did it ever occur to you guys that she's just really really lucky, and by the way vicky sucks at acting, and singing. so don't compare those two. anyways, maybe ziyi just had a really good director that boosted her up enough for people to know her. think about it!

yeah, you're right to say she's very lucky. but behind that luck, nobody really knows how much hard work she puts into success.

Many stars are talented and good at acting, but ZZY strikes me as one who's very determined to get success and become famous. That's probably why she's an international star now.

I agree. I think that although ZZY's very lucky, she has put in lots of hard work into getting what she has today.

I'm not saying she hasn't worked hard, but almost all actresses work hard. The ones who haven't made it are stressed out and work odd hours, and those who do get a decent, breakthrough role have to work even longer hours, along with putting up with the pressure of the media. In the end, some of these things are all about luck.
