    From MonkeyPeaches...
During a press conference, for promoting a brand of sports beverage, in Beijing, Jet Li has commented on how Hero is treated by MiramAxe. He said looked like the US release date had yet to be decided on and the title change (from Hero to Jet Li's Hero) is also somewhat baseless. He was not optimistic about how well Hero would do in the States, because looked like every Chinese (outside of China) got a copy of Hero DVD and that would count for at least US$10 million box-office loss.
I didn't think Jet Li would like "Jet Li's Hero." $this->handle_bbcode_img_match('http://csc.ziyi.org/smilies/sick.gif')

Okay, Maggie Cheung is no doubt a great actress. Ziyi herself praises her for recently having won Best Actress at the Cannes IFF on her website. BUT, many critics are saying that Ziyi was a better actress, challenging the Jury's final decision.

Now, Ziyi is way too humble to even think of encouraging such thought. But, I certainly think it's worth pointing out...

    At Cannes, Asia's star shines
    Time Asia
    May. 31, 2004
    By Richard Corliss
In Asia, an actor's allure can glamorize art films as well as mainstream fare. China's Zhang Ziyi proved that in her debut movie, The Road Home, directed by her mentor Zhang Yimou, before beguiling the world as the willful young heroine of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. At Cannes this year she was radiant in two fine films: 2046, where she managed to outshine longtime mesmerizers Gong Li and Faye Wong; and Zhang Yimou's own House of Flying Daggers, a follow-up to his martial-arts epic Hero.

...The Cannes jury would have honored itself more than [Zhang Ziyi] by giving her the Best Actress prize for 2046 or for Daggers, which was not shown in competition. A source close to the film said the festival brass declared it "too good" to compete. (Who says the French have lost their gift for diplomacy?) Instead, it cited Maggie Cheung, the most intelligently beguiling Chinese actress of the past 15 years.

When the decisions were finally announced, such questions felt silly. For all his many gifts – I've celebrated them in these pages – Tarantino has wretched taste, and his jury's selections proved a fatuous mishmash. It gave Special Jury Prizes to Irma P. Hall in The Ladykillers (remember her moaning about her piles?) and the Thai film Tropical Malady, a daily double that trivialized both winners by making the awards seem preposterously arbitrary. It gave the Best Director prize to quasi-talented Tony Gatlif for Exiles, a film even his handful of admirers didn't like. It named Maggie Cheung Best Actress for Clean, though she wasn't nearly as good as Zhang Ziyi, and gave Best Actor to Yuuya Yagira, a 14-year-old, anime-faced Japanese kid. Tarantino announced each of these choices with the braying cockiness that Europeans love in their American primitives.
With all do respect to Maggie Cheung, critics feel that Zhang Ziyi should've won Best Actress at Cannes. So what do you think?

    Jasmine Women Premiers In Shanghai
    June 15, 2004

Jasmine Women (aka Mo Li Hua Kai, formerly Jasmine Flower), famous Chinese photographer and director Hou Yong's film about a family of three generations of women, starring Zhang Ziyi, Joan Chen, Jiang Wen, Lu Yi and Liu Ye, very recently had its premier screening at the 7th Annual Shanghai International Film Festival in Shanghai, China. The film won the Grand Jury Prize and Zhang Ziyi was nominated in the Best Actress category for her onscreen roles.

Based on Su Tong's novelette The Lives of Women, set in 1930's, 50's and 80's Shanghai, Jasmine Women competed with other domestic and foreign films for the film festival's coveted Golden Goblet Award, but lost to Iranian director Khosro Masumi's Tradition of Lover-Killing.

Many famous and powerful persons in Asian and international cinema were present at this year's film festival, including French director Olivier Assayas and American actress Meryl Streep, among many others. Surprisingly, though she stars in one of the festival's award-winning films and was nominated for a major festival award for her acting, Zhang Ziyi was not invited to the Shanghai International Film Festival for her own film's premier screening. :\

Default Not getting all the negativity

It seems many people have their claws out while discussing Zhang. To me, she is super beautiful. I always had a crush on Loletta Lee when she was younger but Zhang is incredibly lovely too. My girlfriend is Chinese from Beijiing, (I am caucasion Russian_american) she tells me that in China, Lucy Liu would be considered average looking. I have never seen CTHD...I became a fan of Zhang after seeing "Rush Hour 2". I have seen "Hero" and "Musa". I want to see "Purple Butterfly" but the DVD is not available with English subtitles which really sucks. I have some wonderful 8x12" candid photos of Zhang appearing at Cannes. I think they are the best photos I have ever seen of her. There also is a guy from Ireland selling a photo CD of her on ebay once in awhile...like 1200 pictures of her. It is highly recommended for any fan of the great Zhang Ziyi.

    Hello, Joe!

Well, my impression is, many feel they're "supposed to" hate Ziyi. And those who do really don't know much about her, other than what they've read in tabloids or heard from the chorus who has. The rest who are fans feel they have to stay in the closet because of all the "claws."

According to the high views count, a lot of people are browsing this topic out of interest. Since discussion about Ziyi has been highly discouraged imo, I've just been keeping people informed with the latest about her and her films.

Speaking of RH2, it always surprises how many Hu Li fans there are out there. I'm more of a Zhao Di (The Road Home) man myself.

I have Purple Butterfly on DVD. If you ever get it, I can provide you with the entire script of the film in English.

    A little news...

I have it on very good authority $this->handle_bbcode_img_match('http://csc.ziyi.org/smilies/winkgrin.gif') that Zhang Ziyi was in New York City last week to shoot a new Maybelline New York commercial. She left for home Friday.

Also, the official website of House of Flying Daggers is now open! $this->handle_bbcode_img_match('http://csc.ziyi.org/smilies/banana.gif')

Again, Flying Daggers will have its grand premier at Workers Stadium in Beijing on July 10, 2004, before a nation-wide release on July 16, 2004.

let's just get this cleared up! She sleeps with directors in order to get those roles! Because directors are not stupid enough to pick her as an actress! she has no art talent, no looks, but a body to share with men... i'm being nice...

also, i've gone back to china, and everyone hates her... it's more like 1% praises her, and 99% say shit about her... still being nice here...

Go to sina and find out the results yourself and stop praising over here! consider you are included in the 1%... being the nicest i could possibly be...

    Oh, my bad. Thanks, bio.

I'm not good with Japanese names and tend to confuse Takeshi Kaneshiro (Ziyi's costar in SMMF) with Takuya Kimura (Ziyi's costar in 2046). $this->handle_bbcode_img_match('http://csc.ziyi.org/smilies/embarrassed.gif')

I like Ziyi in martial arts and gangster movies. She really fits those action roles. Haven't seen her in any romance roles. Don't know if I want to. She's like Jason Wu. Won't do good in romance roles.
