Default Who was Duong Qua's mother?

I always thought D Q's mother was Moc Niem Tu, but according to this article..

Duong Qua's, (main character for "The Condor Lovers") mother (in the book, they changed it, he had a different mother, not Moc Niem Tu who was in love with the main evil guy in LOCH) was in love with Quach Tinh, and although he knew that he didn't love her, she still loved him to the very end. And lastly, Moc Niem Tu, she was so in love with Duong Khang that when he died she committed suicide (in the book), but on the other hand the guys weren't like that.

    and...

know that Quach Tinh only loved Hoang Dimg but what about Duong Khang, he loved Moc Niem Tu, but when he realised that she isn't going to be with him unless he left all his riches and kill his adopted father, he decided that he didn't love her any more, so he went and liked Duong Qua's real mother, Tan Nam Cam.

Is that Yang Kang, Mu Nianci, Guo Jing and Huang Rong you happened to be talking about, Sugar? The bolds and Vietnamese names are making me so dizzy I can't read and comprehend at the same time. But yeah I figured it has something to do with the new edition. Boy I hate the new editions Jinyong is coming up with... Somebody needs to tell him that he just needs to fill up some plotholes and characterholes instead of changing the whole storyweb...

LEGEND OF THE CONDOR HEROES has been published, to date, three times. The first publication was in the 1950s, when LOCH was first released to the public in the form of weekly (daily?) newspaper installments in Jin Yong's own MING PAO newspaper. After the publication of DEMIGODS & SEMIDEVILS in the 1960s, Jin Yong revised LOCH during the early 1970s, and this version of the novel was considered current until last year (2003), when Jin Yong revised LOCH for a second time.

In the original 1950s edition of LOCH, Yeung Gor's mother was indeed a snake charmer girl who had also been in love with Gwok Jing. In the 1970s and 2003 editions of LOCH, however, this snake charmer girl character does not exist, and Muk Lim Chi is indeed Yeung Gor's mother.

But ya, without meaning to be offensive, I do find our Vietnamese friends really lighten up these forums with their name translations.. =)

I remember Murong Fu being particularly funny...

why does it sound like a Winter Melon to you? Please, explain this.

It might be written in some weird way to you, but, if you could hear a Viet person pronounce this name to you, it's amazingly almost sounded like Yang Guo is in English. Since we couldn't really translate "Yang Guo" in Chinese into other languages. I bet ya Yang Guo is not his official name in English, but it was rather based on the pronunciation of the name "Yang Guo" in Chinese .

If I'm wrong, please let me know? Thanks.

Because in Chinese pinyin, winter melon is actually 'dong gua'. Doesn't this sound and looks like 'Duong Qua'???

Hmm these Vietnamese names are a bitl wrong and sound funny to me.

[Without the accents] The proper ones are:

    Duong Qua - Yang Guo

Muc Niem Tu - Mu Nian Ci

    Duong Khang - Yang Kang

Tan Nam Cam - She was a snake catcher in the original edition. Yang Kang raped her. She gave birth to Yang Guo. In the 2nd edition she was removed and Mu Nian Ci replaced her.

Hoang Dung (not Hoang Dimg !!!) - Huang Rong

    Quach Tinh - Guo Jing

Someone skipped Vietnamese classes/Sunday schools ?

I remember Murong Fu being particularly funny...
    Murong Fu: Mo Dung Phuc.

    What's funny about that ?

And we Viet think that Chinese (all of them: Canto, Mandarin, Hakka etc.) is funny too

In fact, the proper pinyin for MRF is Murong Fu*k but without the asterisk of course. Murong sounds like Moron to me, which makes it: Moron Fu*k....

    Now, which is funnier ?

candide, you're mixing up cantonese and mandarin.

"***" is the cantonese pronunciation of "fu" in mandarin, and "murong" is the mandarin pronunciation of "mo yong".

so the names would look like this:

mo yong fook (which is still pretty funny)

and the classic murong fu, or MRF.

Ah K, I thought people had to pronounce Fu*k as Fu to avoid this ****ing stupid automatic word-censoring function in VB.

Bat Hoang Luc Hop Duy Nga Doc Ton Cong

Bát Hoang Lục Hợp Duy Ngã Độc Tôn Công

Sound very similar to Chinese (closer to Canto, I believe) when you say it, as it's Sino-Vietnamese.

So which name does YG goes by in the version where the snake girl was his mother?
That's the version of the novel I have too, same with you rabadi!
In this version YG mother in Hokkiense is Chin Lam Khin. I like the character though she had a tragic life.
Too bad in the 2nd edition JY erase her (Mu Nian Ci became YG mother).

I like MNC as YG's mother. YK not as a rapist?

I finally understand what that name mean now. What is Sino-Vietnamese?
