Hong Kong hasn't broadcast NEW SHANGHAI BUND yet? What the devil are they waiting for? Goodness knows the rest of the civilized world has seen the series.

Old series are mostly released for the mainland China market.
New series are mostly released for elsewhere, especially for young die hard fans (that always spend money obviously) of a specific actor/actress.

OK...that kind of makes sense, but TVBI shouldn't assume that there's nobody here in the West that wants to purchase its older series.

Moreover, TVBI hasn't been releasing that many current series in the North American market...just many "also-ran" series from the 1980s that many people don't remember/never cared for.

They aired it on their pay channel.
But, they are going to air it again on their free digital HD channels, which will be launched on December 31, 2007. But, I don't know if they will start airing it on Dec. 31st.

I don't get it. A year ago, TVBI was doing great: ROCH '83, LOCH '82, DOMD '84, HSDS '86, DGSD '81...one after another.

Then, the bottom fell out and all they've released since are the dregs.

Is the Ah Fook Theory for real?

Man a bunch of bad ones again.

Over the weekend I had a long chat with a store owner that I've know for a long time now. He told me he refuses to sign contracts with TVB to be a authorized dealer. TVB is one mean company and they couldn't give a sh*t about the dealers or us. He signed a contract with them when he first started his business and man those guys at TVB are bullies. Lots of horror stories. TVB is trying to drive our Canadian distributor out of business. The Canadian Distributor hasn't been able to get their hands on official DVD releases for almost a year now because TVB doesn't want top give them any. TVB can't touch Tai Seng cause the market is HUGE and it's a reason why the prices are so much cheaper than the actual HK releases. Right now all my DVD sets are HK releases as the store owner has his ways to get them. Overall they don't really give a crap about what we really think. We are lucky that we are getting DVD releases on some of this stuff.

Also about Wargod's information about selling newer series to attract the younger generation that spend money on a specific actor/actress, well the store owner i spoke to doesn't always agree. A lot of the newer shows on DVD don't sell well at his store. Mostly because ppl already saw it on TV not long ago and the quality is generally not as good. Exceptions are like War and Beauty and Heart of Greed, but quality like that is VERY rare these days. Meanwhile he always gets requests for 80s classic series and the ones that are available, sell the best. Younger ppl generally DON'T want to spend that much money on TVB DVD's cause of the price. These days everybody downloads this stuff. The people that buy DVD's are like older people that want to collect and rare guys like me at my age that also likes to collect.

Yep, until ATV gives them decent competition, TVB will continue to run their business this way.

Rough Ride is great show. Highly recommended by me

I recently brought the ROCH 80s part I and II, HSDS 80s & Tian Xia Di Yi dvd sets from ebay and so far only watched the first 2 chapters of ROCH I but the quality of the picture is very high & the audio is excellent as well.... not like the loch 80s that i brought a while back where the audio was sometimes very high or low... but i spent over aud$200 and it was definitely worth it.... check out ebay Bizzy DVD STORE got a variety of titles for sale.... I have now finished collecting the Legend of the condor heroes 80s trilogy!!!!

ROCH was definitely much better than LOCH. The audio is messed up on LOCH and it's a pity. So far the quality for TVB DVD's have been pretty good. Only a few of them are duds, but most of them are very good.

I still think it's a master tape issue, because my LOCH '82 VHS tapes had the exact same problem.

Three issues:

1. Menu Control: On the LOCH '82 and ROCH '83 DVDs, it is possible to bypass the copyright warning/TVB logo at the beginning of each DVD by pressing "Top Menu" (LOCH '82) or using the arrow buttons on the remote (ROCH '83). On HSDS '86, however, both overrides are disabled and you're basically forced to wait through the copyright warning/logo stuff.

2. English subtitles: LOCH '82 and HSDS '86 use consistent pinyin Romanizations of Chinese names, but ROCH '83 uses Cantonese Wade-Giles Romanization. Annoying if you're using the subtitles on all three series.

3. This is probably unique to me, but the third episode on each disc in LOCH '82 and HSDS '86 doesn't play on my JVC DVD player, but play just fine on two other DVD players (a Sony and Insignia portable player) that I own. No such issue on the ROCH '83 DVDs, however. Bizarre.

Master tape probably has its issues, but it's not as bad as the DVD shows. I remember watching it on VHS many times and it didn't have these problems.

1. All the older DVD's let you skip the TVB logo/warning message, but they changed it later. They thought it was better for us if we read it. Stupid how i paid money for something, but it won't even let me skip it. Oh well it's not like i read em anyways. It's the time where i take a leak or get something to munch on.

2. I don't use the english subs, but i bet they will be inconsistent cause it's the same for the chinese subtitles! I see constant errors for characters names.

3. Haven't had any disk reading issues b4.

2007 coming to an end and it's almost 2 years since TVB since started releasing their shows on DVD. I found that this year was quite an interesting one. Most of us here have been questioning the releases so far this year and we get the rare good one. Overall 2007 could have been better, but what we can do.

What's everybody's wishlist for 2008? Do you have news for possible releases in the new year Wargod?

That is very good news. I'm sure it won't be a regular release. I think they it will come in a nicer box like the HK version Justice of Life. Hopefully there will be extras too

But will we get it in North America?

If TVBI finally releases this...but *only* in China or the Far East market, I will be pissed off to no end.
