Default English versio of the legend of the white snake!!

    Read this article:
    http://www.taipeitimes.com/News/feat.../16/2003179256

According to the article a Taiwan film company is planning to remake the Legend of the white snake with a New Zealand company!! They plan to make it in english with Ian McKellen (Gandalf) as the monk who is hunting the Demon snake. What a stupid idea no wonder the Taiwanese film industry is going down the drain!! Turning a classic chinese legend into a Hollywood trash!!

"Because the movie will be in English, Reynolds said the cast would have to be internationally known actors. According to Hou, the first candidate for the monk Fa-hai (ᢊC), the Buddhist with supernatural powers, will be Ian McKellen, who plays Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings movies."

What the F*UCK are they implying here? That people like Jet Li, Tony Leung, and Chow Yan Fat can't speak english fluently enough???

I'm a fan of promoting Wuxia stories to the West, like they did with Dragon Inn, and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

But what I'm NOT a fan of is DUMB white asses F*UCKING up a brilliant story. If there is a white guy in the original story by all means cast a white guy. But it its an Asian story cast Asian guys please... I'm a fan of Ian McKellen, but please he ain't no Asian.

Wouldn't the be P*ssed off if Asians did a story called say, "Henry V" and have Chow Yat Fat star as Henry V?? Or say, Jacky Chan as James Bond...

It's not the first time! John Wayne played Genghis Khan once! (shudder) And don't remind me of that western Journey To The West

I am looking forward to seeing the Taiwan film company totally disgrace themselves with this production if it ever falls through.

Hmm, maybe public opionion will force them to terminate show eh??

I personally wouldn't mind if the setting and mythology aspect of the movie was totally westernized, kind of how some Asian films borrow from western fairy tales. I think that's probably how it will be. Because a straight adaptation with western actors is just plain whack.

Until about the 80s(or even as late as the 90s), pretty much all films involving foreign people are played by white people. I mean, based on The Ten Commandments, you'd think that everyone in Egypt were white.

Well lots of people thought it was silly that Jackie chan dress up as a Cowboy in Shanghai Noon or Knights... but it work out... because it have decent humor and action.

For this case... it looks like they are just replacing the charactor ethnic background.... which might be really bad.

I still remember on a Hollywood board that someone was complaining about Japanese version of Titantic.

Yeah - My only concern on this subject is when white bums get a hand on martial arts material, its normally the, "hey I'm WHITE and I'm kicking your butt".

They would probably cast white actors to play major good roles and then cast us Asians to play the badies (with exception of Ian's character).

Then you'll see the all too familiar white guy using martial arts to kick Asian guys..........

Honestly, if they want to make an Asian film in the English language I don't get how they just can't cast Asians who can speak fluent English????

The success of the LOTR trilogy will show its the "story" and not well known actors that make a movie great.

How many of you have heard of Orlando Bloom, ELijah Woods, Viggo ect... before LOTR??

I've heard of Elijah Wood long before LoTR. Thought the guy was rather well-known back then, during his child star days.

I respect your vision of course, but I am a fan of demoting Chinese culture to the West - not always, but most of the time.
