Why not think of his solid acting roles in 'What's Eating Gilbert Grape', 'Catch Me If You Can', "Basketball Diaries', "Romeo and Juliet'? Oh yeah, cos' he had the misfortune of being in the top-grossing movie of all-time, therefore, to everyone, he's always the foppy-haired fellow who screamed 'I'm The King Of The World!'? Sheesh, you know what? I thought Leo was pretty damned good in Titanic too.

And Matt Damon, ah yes, a CRAPPY ACTOR? Oh yeah, right, of course, yes, let's disregard the Bourne movies, the Kevin Smith movies he appeared in, Good Will Hunting, Talented Mr. Ripley, Saving Private Ryan. Aha, Matt is horrible.

I'm sure everyone's gonna disregard their award credentials too. 'Ahahah! Lalala, I don't believe in the awards they've won, or the Oscars they were nominated for, because they were two blonde pretty boys, therefore they suck!'

Oh, and Andy Lau? He's respected soooo much? He's 5438750909830584085038504850385094850938 times better than these two actors because he's middle-aged? Right, of course, in the 100+ movies he acted in, we can just ignore the fact that 80% of them were crap Wong Jing fare or vanity projects. Right, he's Andy Lau, he's Chinese, he's asian, he's in the original film, therefore, he rocks.

Ah, and Martin Scorsese? He's only some talentless hack who made movies like Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Mean Streets, Taxi Driver. I'm sure ANDREW LAU and his partner are much much much much better than this guy.

It's fun. I'm the only person to defend the making of this film.

Well said. Thanks for defending. I am a huge Leonardo DiCaprio fanatic...have been since I was practically born. lol. Anyways, I think he's a good actor and will do a fantastic job. Although, I kinda wanted to see him in Andy's role. Matt Damon on the other hand, I can't stand to watch him but oh well. I'm sure the end result will be fine. I hope The departed is a working title because I too think that Infernal Affairs sounds way better.

Will the American version share the same plot with the HK's INfernal Affair, or will it have an alternate ending? Im pretty amazed that the asian film industry is slowly infiltrating the american one.

I remember seeing a trailer for the original Infernal Affairs in a US theater. Obviously at this point there doesn't seem to be a plan for any sort of limited release in NA, so why the hell they showed the trailer? Hallucination?

I don't really get the whole remake mentality. Does it have to do with Hollywood's presumption that the average American moviegoer is simply incapable of digesting dramatic material from another culture, that they must repackage the story in a setting familiar to them? One can get quite cynical on this topic...

When it comes out, I don't think it'll be as good as the original HK version.

Aha. Apparently, Jack Nicholson is playing Eric Tsang's crime boss role.

Very well said.I'm one of those who is eagerly waiting for its release.Although Leo is a capable actor many ppl dismissed him for a teen idol because of Titanic. And Matt Damon...I'm a very huge fan of his. He's a very versatile young actor ...

That post is written months ago, and I realize how wrong I was. SPCNet IS a forum catered towards fans of Asian films, most notably the HK ones, therefore, it is natural for people here to disregard Hollywood films and worship every single thing about Asian films and their actors and actresses.

The original Infernal Affairs was indeed released in limited screens.

I'm so sad... on one hand when i watched hollywood movies i tot that their ideas were simply great. But on the other hand when i saw from e trailers like The Ring 1 & 2 and oso e Dark Water remake of Japanese version, i couldn't help bt 2 laugh out loud n think tat they were simply copycats.

I was really shocked by The Ring japanese version when it showed i think 5 or 6 years back? I can't really rmb. Bt when i saw e trailers for e English remake version, i was like what e heck? If i did watch e remake, i will laugh instead of crying. Sorry if i'm being too blunt bt i jus tot that hollywood movies would not hav 2 resort to such means....

Jesus Christ. Hollywood had been remaking films for DECADES (the classic Akira Kurosawa film, Seven Samurai, was remade into the classic western film, Magnificent Seven). I don't remember people whinging that much about it in the past.

Well, people have whined, they just didn't have an internet to voice it.

On a somewhat related note, Hollywood does seem to be running out of ideas this summer. Nothing but rehashed ideas: Dukes of Hazzard, Bewitched, Longest Yard, War of the Worlds, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, etc. Heck, even Batman Begins. But I do agree with you in one aspect, I'm almost certain that the Departed will be better than the original Infernal Affairs in terms of direction, acting, and pacing. Wouldn't it be funny if Scorsese finally wins his Oscar on this film? Ok, wishful thinking on my part that last bit, but come on, how can anyone assert that Andy Lau is a better actor than either DiCaprio or Damon? Tony Leung, on the other hand, is another story. And if they do get Jack to play the gangland boss....

And it's not like HK hasn't been ripping off Hollywood for... well... for asl long as they made movies.

Why so many people can't stand Matt Damon? What's wrong with him? I think he's a great actor.

I used to be a great fan of Leo when he's guest starring in Growing Pains. Now, not anymore. But I still think he's a good actor. It's just that he looks too young for all the mature roles he played.

Anyway, it's not impossible for The Departed to come out better than Infernal Affairs. At least, I don't think they will use taller actors to the play the younger self of shorter actors.

I hope Scorsese will win it with this one. The majority of the posters here will commit hara-kiri.

Wouldn't really say that Charlie and the Chocolate Factory's a rehashed idea. Just a second adaptation of a novel.

I think both Damon and Dicaprio are fine actors, I wish they'll put up Oscar-worthy performances in this flick to drive SPCNet Forumers insane.

Well, insert Herbie the Love Bug in for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory then.

Anyways, here's the Departed's IMDB page:

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0407887/

Apparently Mark Wahlberg, Martin Sheen, and Alec Baldwin are involved too. Wahlberg makes sense because the story is set in Boston and he's a Boston guy (maybe playing the dumb gangster friend who dies in the car?). No idea who Baldwin or Sheen plays though.

I do like the point out that the writers for Infernal Affairs are also getting writing credit for this movie as well.

Someone told me that Mark Walberg was going to be Anthony Wong's role...and I hope that isn't right...cos isn't he a bit young to play the Inspector...and up against Jack Nicoholson...what?? I thought he would be likely to play Gordon Lam's character...heeh...who knows.

Sheen or Baldwin -- one could proably be the Inspector, I suppose.

Jack would be great as the crime lord, taking on Eric's evil smile, I can imgine that.

Funnyily enough, I'm inteterested in seeing this to see how Hollywood stuffs up the original storyline... cos I really liked IF (esp part1). Oh well, we'll see

Doubt it's even going to be such a faithful adaptation.

they were filling around beacon hill for a bits. a friend's co-worker spotted matt and leo. and someone told me they're gonna film in c-town later. don't know if that's true, or if that someone is just trying to trick me into paying for dim sum.
