doctor, here's a question:
is there any way to make me grow taller? i'm 15 and 5'2. my parents are 4'11 and 5'10, and my brother is 5'11. am i done growing? i want to grow at least 3 more inches.. does milk and stretching help?

the back...hmm its a temporary pain, when i curve my back inwards, and then release to normal position, during that period it hurts.
when i jump and land, in the landing perioud a spasm of pain on my back will erupt, and it feels tight (back) at the same time.
either way, after a few days of rest i think i'm cured (: !!
I've a problem, the area around my heart/chest occasionally gives a sharp pain for no reason.. what should I do? It seems to be interior and not exterior.
Thanks again.
I went to a rock concert recently, and the volume of the music was so loud that I could hardly hear after the concert. Sort of like there's someting stuck in both my ears and everything sounds... um cushioned. My ears got better the next day, everything seems to be back to normal... however, I keep hearing this ringing sound in my left ear. The ringing is only obvious when I am in quiet areas, I hardly notice in when I am around other people, only before I sleep or when I am in the bathroom. Is this condition normal, does it go away after a few days?
Psst - The concert was on Saturday, it has been less than 48 hours after the concert.
It sounds like something I have occassionaly too. For me, it feels like a sharp cramp in my heart area. I've been checked out by a cardiologist who found nothing wrong. I think it may be your chest muscles. I know in the summer when I wear the strap of my bag across my left chest, sometimes I will have that pain.Originally Posted by soccerfeva
If I were you, I'd go to a cardiologist and get an examination. If he/she finds nothing, you'll probably be fine... unless you are one of the unlucky ones to have some undetectable fatal heart condition.

If you are a guy, you probably have a few more years to grow, until 18.Originally Posted by xcutie

A few more inches seems to be achievable by you.
Sure, having good nutrition in general like milks helps.

P/s: Do you know that in general, you can predict a person's height by taking the average of the heights of the parents?
And also that in general, the world's population's height is increasing with each decade, not only due to better nutrition, but maybe due to a new shift in our evolution!
Acute back pain should be relieved within 1 month in most cases, and besides the treatments that i mentioned above, you need to get moving and to exercise, in order to strengthen the back muscles. The physiotherapists would help greatly n that aspect.Originally Posted by letalforever

It doesn't sounds like a heart pain.Originally Posted by soccerfeva
1) It is around the heart area, not the central of the chest.
2) It is sharp, rather than dull.
Is it associated with shortness of breath, or with palpitation?
If neither to the above, is it tender when touched?
If so, it may be musculoskeletal pain.

It is not uncommon to have it after hearing a loud noise or shooting. It typically will go away after a while, although 48 hours seems to be more than enough for it to go away.
If yours is associated with continuing tinnitus within the next 12 hours, or hearing loss, or single sided tinnitus or with balance problem, i would suggest that you see a doctor soon for examination of your ears and its surrounding.

doc, what are the symtoms of anemia?
i'm not sure if i have it but here's what's been happening to me:
i've been getting thinner and thinner hair lately, but i dont feel tired or dizzy. however, once in a while (usually once every few months), i suddenly get dizzy and feel like throwing up. then i get cold sweat and start feeling weak. i need to sit down, and then i feel very hot for a few minutes. after a while, i feel fine again. it seems really random, and the last time it happened was in April.
i take Flintstones multivitamin for kids, but i'm almost 16 so should i get taking adult women's vitamins instead? if i go to the doctor to get checked for anemia, how do they do it? does it require blood samples (i'm scared of needles)?

Dear Xcutie,
The symptoms that you described are unfortunately very non-specific. I'm not able to think of a specific illness, just by reading your description of it.
With anemia, i.e. reduced red blood cells in your blood, you will feel more tired and lethargic, in addition to you feeling dizzy or short of breath. You will also look pale, and your conjuntivae will be pale also. You will need to have a blood test to check the full blood count and also your iron studies --> you needing iron supplements.
It might also be worthwhile checking on your thyroid function when you sees your doctor next. Imbalances in your thyroid function may cause hair thinning.

Hi Doc, how come I always get sick after exams? It's been happening for 6 years, and everytime after I sit a series of exams, I get a cold, a sore throat, sometimes a fever, headaches, epiphoria, and smetimes even nausea. I am feel fine during exam week except for anxiety, but all theses symptoms seem to pop up a few days after the last exam. Do I have an abnormal immune system? Should I go and take vitamins?![]()

It is very likely that the high level of stress in the time preceeding and also during the exam contributes to this.
With high level of stress, the body is aroused in the fight-or-flight response, your cathecholamines and corticosones levels are increased. These increases hampers the body's natural immune system, making it more likely that you catch the common flu.
Vitamins would not help.

Why do you get car sick?
I don't quite understand it well enough, and without reading up on it, this is my lay persons' explanation.
A person's perception of movement are controlled by the semilunar canals in the ears and also the eyes. Mismatch between them causes vertigo, and hence nausea, vomiting and dizziness.
You can prevent it by eating anti-motion sickness meds, of which ginger traditionally plays an important role. You can also try to focus your eyes on the horizon, these being relatively flat are less prone to move that much compared to objects closer, and helps to dampen the mismatched signals from the eyes. Further, travelling at a slower speed helps as well.
I'll try to read up when free, and correct all the myths above.

Joint reply to ice-cream and Da Bao,
Sorry for the late reply, i'm in Malaysia currently awaiting the chinese new year.
Hence, i had not checked the internet for weeks.
1) How to reduce acne and scarring?
Acnes or pimples are due to the confluence of 3 factors :- Skin pores obstruction, oily skin and bacterial overgrowth. If you can reduce these via facial washing, antibiotics etc, you would managed to reduce this.
(p/s: i think i posted a longer reply to this question in the past.)
Scarring is due to pimples being squeezed. So stop squeezing it.
How to reduce it, if it has occured?
I really have no idea, ?laser?
2) Define beauty spots pls, with pic if you can. thanks.
3) Heme or iron component in the haemoglobin in the blood.

doctor, there's been this cold/flu kind of thing going around my area. it makes people only cough (no runny noses, etc.). my mom, dad, and i are coughing like crazy. we go to the doctor and get some antibiotic thing called Biaxin. whenever we get better, we just end up getting sick again. so the 3 of us keep coughing.. but my brother is unaffected? why's that? how can we get rid of this "cycle" of coughing?
