warrghhh...Dr han....your reply really scared me!!

but thank you so much for looking up into it...i think my condition might be associated with high blood pressure, it runs in the family, even my younger sister has it.

The last time of my med check-up i cleared of that one....but maybe it just happens when i do something physical....or i could just make sure to go running every day, or every two days...

i'll definitely look up the links you attached.....perhaps when im ready i might even go for a real thorough check-up, but definitely not anywhere near now....

thank you again, it must have taken your precious time to look those up, i know a doctor doesnt really own time to themselves, especially one who already devoted some to become a moderator... so i really appreciate it.....

Han, try solving this if you can, please:

Recently, as I'm doing my weekly exercise -- pull-ups, I felt some intense pain at the back of my neck. My friend (not a doctor) said I could have been stretching my limits and that my limbs probably aren't strong enough. Maybe. But funnily enough, I didn't have these pains before lately. And I wasn't able to do more pull-ups than what I can in the past. Moreover, in the past, I can always repeat several tries after my first try. Now, I can't: once I'm done with my first try, I simply couldn't do any more. I've once tried ignoring the pain and do my second set of pull-ups, but the pain was so intense I thought I was going to die or something, and there's this throbbing thingy going on in my head. The pain was simply unbearable.

Even worse, this pain has nowadays "extended" into my reading. My neck will suddenly go all stiff after an approx. ten-minute of reading and when I tried to move it I will experience the same pain I've had in my exercise. And when I'm lying down on the bed, I can sometimes feel my pulse at the neck. This has never happened before! It's not painful, but it sure sends some warning bells 'cause it was quite "loud" and distracting.

Please tell me it isn't anything dangerous; I'm getting paranoid nowadays because of this silly pain I've had.

    Pacifian,

Few questions, how long since that incidence did you have the symptoms?
Do you have any pain going down the arms or pins and needles sensations?
Any changes in your hand/leg powers or in your balance?

Assuming the answers to be no, I guess you "twisted" the muscles on your neck/back. It should get better soon.
    Try some ice-pack and painkillers.

Pretty sure yittz or Aphraeleiss will correct me though.

Since the start of Chinese New Year.

    No.

    Not that I know of.

Woo-hoo! But isn't this recovery taking a bit too long? It's already March and well ...

    painkillers.
I did, but the effects were temporary.

Hey Dr han, I have a question here.

Usually after intense jogging, I would cool down for around 5 mins and then head for a chilled 100 plus isotonic drink. Is that unhealthy to the body? But the sad thing is I heard that consuming cold drinks after exercise is bad, as cold drinks will lead to a rapid contraction of your heart and body muscles which are still very heated up after the run.

But then after I read this article, I am quite confused.

Is drinking cold water during or after exercise good for you or bad for you? Does the temperature of the water matter at all?

    A. Believe it or not, cold water is absorbed faster by your body than water at room temperature or at body temperature. The American College of Sports Medicine recommends that water and other drinks be chilled when used for exercise.

Pacifian, I am no where near Han Solo or Aphraeleiss. Is it ok if I ask a few questions? More to my benefit than yours, but maybe others can use the answers you give.

One month history of intermittent severe neck pain, originally triggered by pull up exercise (anythingelse could have caused it? anything different about that particular exercise session? how heavy would you classify your pullups?). Episodes of pain triggered by pull ups (can you move your neck normally without pain?), intensified upon 2nd set (btw how many is 1 set?) with head throbbing. No previous history of neck or head injury was mentioned (?). More recently, complains of stiff neck after 10min of reading and loud palpable neck pulse (can you actually hear it?) upon lying down. There is no parasthesia, loss of coordination or changes in muscle power.

Is the back of neck hot/red? Anything that relieves the pain or the stiff neck? Does the pain go elsewhere, like head or shoulders? Is the pain more to one side, or bilateral? When you are just sitting there can you replicate the pain with moving your neck?

Sure. Just get that pain outta my neck.

    anythingelse could have caused it?
Couldn't have been. But I can't say for sure ...

anything different about that particular exercise session?
Absolutely nothing. This is the weird part.

how heavy would you classify your pullups?
Lighter than my usual set of pullups. Typically, I could have done slightly more than this; now I have to stop before my arms ache.

can you move your neck normally without pain?
At times, there'll be some minor pain. Very minor ones.

btw how many is 1 set?
Gee ... I hope you wouldn't ask that question. It's kinda embarrassing ... oh well ...

Around fifteen. The second set onwards it'll decrease further and further till nothingness.

No previous history of neck or head injury was mentioned (?).
Now that you've mentioned it, I did have one.

Last year August, I knocked my head against the wall (Don't ask). The area where I was hurt was the back of my head is around ten centimetres above the spot where it hurts now. At that time, it was kinda painful and there's this ringing headache I will experience for the whole of that week after I got hurt. I don't see much connection, if you ask me. But then again, I'm no doctor.

loud palpable neck pulse (can you actually hear it?)
I think I've felt it, then perhaps the vibration made those sounds?

There is no parasthesia, loss of coordination or changes in muscle power.
    I suppose so.

Is the back of neck hot/red?
    No.

Anything that relieves the pain or the stiff neck?
All I did was to wait till the pain/stiffness subsides.

Does the pain go elsewhere, like head or shoulders?
That time, when I foolishly tried my second set of pullups, it went to my head if I'm not wrong. Really painful.

Is the pain more to one side, or bilateral?
    More towards my right.

When you are just sitting there can you replicate the pain with moving your neck?
No. Unless when the stiffness sets in then I will experience some pain when I try moving it.

Sure, drink cold water- i sure doesn't do anything bad to you -
    1) The small ammount of cold water that you drink will hardly affect your body temperature to a very significant degree
    2) The water that you drink will hardly change your heart contractions to a major degree unless you drink like 2 litre in 10-15 min.

    Pacifian,

At this stage, i would suggest that you see a doctor.

Firstly, it is very difficult for me/anyone to really suggest anything useful over the internet without actually examining you - and with you, i would really like to examine your upper body's nervous system, and then the neck.

Secondly, the long duration between the initial neck pain and its persistent nature despite minor aggravation should be looked into.

Thirdly, i don't like the "tinnitus" or ringing that you are experiencing. It may be nothing, or it may be something serious - like a dissection (chances of that is very low though).

Fourthly, the somewhat unilateral radiation of your pain is again something that needs to be looked at.

I'm somewhat comforted by the fact that you do not really have any weakness/numbenss/changes in your sensations of the hands.

What's the area where EMTs or ambulance people reel injured people to? It doesn't seem like the ER or the OR. This area would have separate beddings and curtain where the doctor would examine the injuries before directing people to bring the injured person somewhere else. What do you call this particular area in the hospital?

This is called a triaging system (the place is usually called a triage), where a nurse would determine which patients have a priority and needs to be seen immediately.

Its origin is meant to have come from the Napolean Wars.

this is actually about my grandmother. she's in her 80s, and for the last couple of months, she's been having fevers at night. they occured when she was younger, too, but more and more frequently now. her forehead gets hot around 8pm at night, and stays hot until she wakes up the next morning. she doesn't have any other flu symptoms, just the fever. and she doesn't feel hot anywhere else. she mentioned it to her doctor, and he was just basically like, "mmm hmmm, i see." -_-

any idea what could be the matter? it happens a few times a week now. she has high blood pressure and high cholesterol. and has trouble walking. the reason for that is unknown, too. and her doctor seems to not care. yeah, i don't like him.

I don't see how physics will help you become a Chemist. Yes, it will be beneficial and give u a deeper understading of Static/Dynamics, but that applies to anything new u learn.

Physics is more related to my field (engineering) since I took 5 physics related courses already.

    Dr. Han:

I saw a news report on the Lancet about a study concluding that chest compressions only has a better effect than normal CPR to rescusitate a person. From my "general" knowledge of the body, this does make sense.

The point of CPR is to jump the heart; the mouth-to-mouth part is to supply the brain with oxygen. However, ur body should have enough oxygen in the blood stream to supply ur brain for 10 min (?).
SO is it better to do chest compressions only?

    Heres the article: LINK

I guess it depends if you like physics or not. Physics help give you a better understanding of the world around you. From my pharmacology papers, it didn't really use physics, nor did any of the human biology papers. Only physiology use physics at a very basic level. If physics is going to raise your university entrance marks, and/or you enjoy it, take it, or else take another subject you enjoy. Biology and chemistry are recommended though.

    Re: CPR
I think it's because a typical witness/first on the scene, would compromise the chest compression part if they try to do the breaths as well. Also they would be reluctant to do mouth to mouth and the hesitation takes away precious time. If you know how to do CPR and is not deterred by m-m, then do the breaths too. Otherwise just do chest compressions, esp. if the person looks dodgy/drug OD.

wow, so that's what they call the place is. I first heard about Triage in Vin Diesel movie, Pitch Black where theyre deciding who to be brought to safety and who becomes the bait for this flying creatures (theyre stranded on a planet). In the movie, the antagonist said something like this, " Doctors in war do this all the time. It's called triage,"

ive always wondered about supplying oxygen thru the mouth-to-mouth. isnt when we blow/exhale into the mouth we're actually depositing CO2? i read something about this on an article saying that it's actually useless to do the mouth-to-mouth resuscitation because of this (that we're blowing CO2 into the chest)....is this true?

depends on what field of physics and what field of chemistry.

if you want to be a physical chemist, then obviously a good knowledge of physics is not only recommended, but essential .

if you want to be an organic chemist, then i would assume a good knowledge of thermo, kinetics, quantum, etc would be desireable.

if you want to be a biochemist, you'll probably only need a basic physics background.

The O2 content would be lower than the air, but a lot higher than someone in respiratory arrest. When you do m-m, you take a good breath in, then immediately deposit that into their mouth, not like you hold your breath for a while and then blow it in. So no.
