How much food should be given to little kids?
Obviously adults have different appetites and amounts/portion they should eat. Sometimes I think adults don't know how much kids should eat before its too much and they're over fed and sometimes they're not fed enough that they get anorexic. So what's the proper portion for kids? Any idea, Han?

Hello Doctor Han,
I had another question. I have a bump under my left ear, kinda just above my jaw line. It dosent really bother me, but is it something I should get checked out right away? or would it be cool if I waited(say a bit over 3 weeks when my exams are over)?
Oh, just wanted 2 add that I noticed it about 3 weeks ago and its still kinda there..you cant see it, but I can feel it with my hand.
wow..04-08....4 years just like that..time flies..
Is it painful? How big is the lump? Do you feel unwell?
Does it affect your exam performance? ()

Han, I hope you don't mind if I answer this question.
SS: Some resources which I used in a course that I attended a couple years ago on nutrition for kids.Originally Posted by Suet Seung
1. A summary of food groups/types and portion sizes for infants and kids up to 12 years old.
2. Building Blocks for Fun and Healthy Meals, the almost-full online version of the document from which item #1 came from.
3. Menu Magic for Children (something quick and fun).
These will probably answer most, if not all, of your questions on portion sizes for kids. But portion sizes are not the only factor when it comes to overfed/overweight or underfed/anorexic kids. The types of food eaten (or not eaten) and the regularity of meals play important roles too.

hey dr han, quick question... is chewing gum bad? cause i heard they made gum with oil and stuff
SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS 2010 and 2012 CHAMPS
Quick search at Pubmed using the terms of chewing gum, and then chewing gum and adverse effects.Originally Posted by LuNaR
Good
1) Chewing of gum following meals protects the teeth from dimineralisation, and also protects your gum
2) Chewing gums reduces apetite for sweets and snacks
3) Chewing gums may increase your sense of alertness, and decrease your sense of sleepiness.
4) Chewing gums may decrease post-operative ileus.
Bad
1) Chewing gum should not be advised in post-tonsillectomy patients as it increases pain (duh!) and delay resumption of normal oral intake.
2) One case report from 1978 in which a sorbitol containing chewing gum may be responsible for a case of prolonged diarrhoea.
Inconclusive
1) Chewing gums may or may not help context-dependent memory strategies.

What happens if someone swallows their chewing gum, what happens to the gum or how does it get digested in your system?Originally Posted by Han Solo

RE:Yittz
hmmm answering questions in order..., does not hurt, the bump is a bit smaller then the size of my thumb, I feel great as of Apr 02, 2007 4:11 mountain time, and no effect on exam performance so far(I do bad with our without the bump =P).
wow..04-08....4 years just like that..time flies..
Most lumps are harmless, I can't be sure lol. Probably best to wait to wait for Han Solo's answer.
Is it getting bigger? And what is the consistency of the node - what does it feel like ie liquid filled? hard/soft? rubbery?
If you do bad w/wo the bump, I am sure going to the doc won't change the outcome either![]()

I did swallow chewing gum some years ago and I am still alive today. So don't worry about itOriginally Posted by Suet Seung

p/s. i did panic then but after a few days, nothing happened. Since then, I rarely chew gums anymore.
Ah, but the sample size was only 15 or something, so they kinda threw it out the window.Originally Posted by Han Solo

Yittz what is your differentials?Originally Posted by yittz

Benign cyst/mass
Infections (nodes not painful though, and no systemic signs)
Primary lymph node malignancy (unlikely)
Lymphoma
CLL
Secondary malignancy (very unlikely)
Whatever that spreads there - lung, throat?
And my favourite - idiopathic enlargement of lymph nodes associated with pre-exam syndrome
I would like to know if it's getting bigger, the consistency of the enlargement, any other enlargement of nodes elsewhere. And probably observe for a while before doing any tests (I guess an FBC wouldn't hurt and screen for infections, but no nodal excision).

Hi Han, I wanna ask you something.
Is there any difference between the olive oil we use for cooking and the olive oil ear drops for the ear? So can I use the olive oil we use for cooking as ear drops for the ear?

Yittz,
1) The location that duguxiaojing describes is under the left ear, and above the jaw line. - which triangle of the neck is that? and what anatomical structure can reasonably cause such a lump?
2) The differentials that you gave presumes that it is a lymph node. What are the characteristics that you will use to distinguish a lymph node versus other lumps and bumps?
3) quick note on infection and lymph nodes- you can get reactive lymph nodes in a viral infection and this is not tender to touch. Also with infection, you forgot about the possibilities of mycobacterium.....
Trying to get yittz to do my work,
