Depends on the cause - treat the cause, treat the illness.

but doctors are lazy bunch, we just give sleeping medications, mainly benzodiazepines such as temazepam or diazepam and get ppl to get a good night sleep - doesn't treat the cause though.

well, we're all encouraging you at least

I have a lot of faith in you! Anyone who can get into the medicine course has got to have a degree of intelligence. Still, you have 4 more years of hard work to go... followed by... more hard work.

Hm, i don't have any health problems at the moment... I wonder if there's a cure for clumsiness though?

Only during class (what's different about weekends)? What did you eat lunch/breakfast? How often and how did it come about? How severe is the pain? Weight change and change in appetite?

Think it's indigestion or heart burn. Think its something to do with your eating habits (do you drink a lot of caffiene drinks?)

Han help, confused about the headache - is that just caused by the general feeling of unwell and abdominal pain? Could this be peptic ulcer?

    Edit: forgot stress

Its funny, never happens on weekends.

I dont eat breakfast. at least, well i hardly do. Its not because of it though , i usually get sick FROM eating breakfast.

    Well, when i get a headache, i tend to eat a lot of chocolate. Caffeine,, chocolate not much coffee, hardly ever. For lunch, rice, like in sushi, fried rice, things like that;

To yittz: Go for it! You have my support in handling the clinic, and I'm sure you'll do well!

To Han Solo: Great job, mate, in opening up pathways for your juniors. Maybe now we can spend more time drinking tea and playing golf!

Your headache is likely a combination of stress tension-type headache and migraine - Solution: get your stress levels down, try soluble paracetamol when it happens.

Your heartburn and dyspepsia can be treated with simple antacids such as mylanta, and also by eating better. if persistent, see your family doctor and see if you require gastroscopy.

Golf had become a young guy's game ever since Tiger Wong, (oops Woods) came out.

    Hi docs.

Very valuable thread indeed . I searched for posts on IBDs and found nothing and wondering if some are too shy to talk about it. I'll state my condition followed by some questions.

I was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease after suffering two total obstructions (very nasty). It first appeared in the descending colon. Medications were Pentasa full-time and Prednisone for the rough stretches which worked reasonably well. Had very good doctors who understood pain and stress management, and the associated depression.

It progressed and about six years ago appeared in the transverse and ascending and got to the point where I had a sub-total colectomy (have 23cm left) with ostomy. I didn't mind the ostomy because I was happy to be rid of the pain, and it was reversed a year later anyway. Life was looking good again!

I've kept up annual colonoscopies throughout and found out last fall that it's back again. What little pain I've experienced so far is nothing compared to pre-surgery, but I'm having difficulty maintaining weight and have had a couple of 'accidents' at work. I'm lucky to work for an understanding employer who has reduced my workload and allows me to work at home whenever I choose. Still, my job is quite high-stress but I love it and refuse to quit. I started eating probiotic yogurt and it seems to be helping, so I'm good for now. Oh, and increased Pentasa from 2000mg/day to 5000-6000mg/day.

    My questions:
    1) Have you treated any Crohn's patients and, if so, what is your experience with probiotics?

    2) Having increased the Pentasa and started the yogurt at the same time, how would I tell which one is working? Probably shouldn't worry about it if I'm not getting worse, right?

    3) My specialist suggested the yogurt because the pharmaceutical stuff is very expensive - about $50/day - and its not covered by insurance. He gave me some samples to try, but he took them out of a cupboard and I didn't notice the 'must be refrigerated' until I got home. I've kept them in the fridge, but my question is, are they still good? I haven't tried any yet and would like to know if I should just throw them out.

    4) I had to get a new GP recently and he's ancient and doesn't seem as good as my previous one. Now this is amazing - he asked if my specialist had told me to smoke tobacco, which he hadn't. My GP suggested four cigarettes a day. I seem to remember reading an article a few years back on nicotine therapy, but I'm having a hard time believing it. What's your opinion on this? Do you know of any clinical studies or research, or is this guy out to lunch?

I hope this isn't too far out of your field, if so, no worries. And I don't do anything without consulting my specialist who is excellent imo. My next appointment isn't for a number of months, so I'm doing research in the meantime.

Sorry for late post. I was hoping Han Solo would answer, cause as a patient you seem to know more than me re Crohns.

    1) No
    2) Probably don't worry about it. You could stop one to see how much you get worse, but I don't recommend doing this.
    3) Lol, no idea. Ask you doctor how long he kept it outside the fridge. I guess you might want to compare with a fresh sample. From experience, yoghurt gets watery with time.
    4) I can't find evidence of smoking being protective/decrease symptoms. Articles seem to suggest smoking increase severity of Crohn's and increase chance of requiring surgery (guessing Crohn's is inflammatory disease, and smoking increases inflammation). The fact that smoking is so harmful for any other disease, why would you run the risk of getting addicted.

I don't know about the treatment of Crohn's, it seems to be focussed on anti-inflammatory and surgery.

    hi,

uhm, this may sound a little stupid....but between solosen acriflavine and iodine, which one is more effective in kicking the germ and bacteria's ***, or are they really the same thing?

and what does it do actually? would the wound get healed faster just by putting it in?
