    IMPORTANT NOTES

I've made some minor revision to just smooth out the language and put more pinyin terms next to the names and terms for the previous 7 pages of translation.

I have also included sidenotes to some translation that could create confusion and perhaps different with the second edition Chinese version. Please re-read them if you want

Some of the addition terms (Pinyin in brackets)

    Tjip-Hian-Tjeng (Ju Xian Manor)
    Ha Hek Kun (Hua HeGen)
    Huan Hwa (Fan Hua)
Leng Tjiu Kiong (Ling Jiu Gong)

    and more... please re-read.

Again, I'm trying to go on quick-flash mode so I can finish this as soon as possible. But now I understand how difficult and time consuming it is to translate, and I'm not even trying to be so verbose and professional here. Just trying to breeze through it but keeping the same style and tones, without losing the actual feel of Jin Yong writings.

Not to mention this is from the first edition translated into Indonesian and I have no reference of the first edition in Chinese, so I have to rely on the second edition Chinese version which could be altered already. So bear with me

    ENJOY

Okay... here it is ... another page before the weekend.

I'm going to take a break for a while.

    ------- page 8

As soon as he arrived in front of Siau Hong, Go-tiang lo jumped down from his horse and kowtowed (kneel down).

He said "By the name of the entire Kay Pang beggar union members, Go Tiang-Hong dedicated this Pak-Kau-Pang (Dog Beating Stick) back to Pang-Tju."

"We have been too presumptous and thick-headed, as a result Pang Tju, who was innocent, had been going through horrible nightmares. We're really even dumber than animals. So please... we're now begging for your forgiveness. We hope that you could forget what happened in the past and become our Pang Tju again, and lead us, who have been acting like little kids who lost their parents."

While saying these words, he handed out the Pak-Kau Pang into Siau Hong's hands.

Siau Hong felt so touched to face his old time buddies from the past. He said "Go-tinglo, Tjayhe (refering to himself) truly is a Khitan. I am so very thankful of your good intention. About the Pang Tju position, I definitely cannot take it ." He said it while lifting up Go-tianglo.

Go-tianglo was a straight, honest person, he was at a loss to see Siau Hong acted that way. Then while scratching his head, he said "You….. You admited that you're a Khitan person as well and don't …….. Don't want to become Pang Tju ? Ahhh…. Kiau-Pangtju, please forget it, don't get mad again at our conspicous foolish acts in the past and accept your position back !"

At the same moment the sounds of war drums could be heard as loud as thunder inside the city, it's a sign that the Liao soldiers were going to proceed outside the city.

Toan Ki quickly said "Go-tianglo, let's go quicky, the enemy soldiers are too strong, had they regrouped, we wouldn't be able to fight them off."

Siau Hong also knew that the reason why those kay-pang members and other bravemen in wulin could be temporary gaining some ground was because they used a surprised attack to be succesful, but had they really fight against thousands and thousands of Liao soldiers, those Jiang Hu warriors wouldn't be able to match thousands of well-trained Liao soldiers. Not to mention if they ever engaged into a battle, there would be an enormous casualties as well. This was definitely the opposite of what he had wished for.

So he said "Go-tianglo, we can discuss about our Pang Tju issue later. The most important thing is for you to quickly command our brothers to retreat toward the West."

Go-tianglo complied and put out that order. At once, the back line of Gay Pang members changed into the front line and hurriedly fleed to the west. Not too long after that, Hi-Tiok (XU ZHU) had caught up with them, accompanied by a number of women fighters and 36 Tongju and 72 Totju (the fighters from the 36 Caves and 72 Islands).

After fleeing several Li (li - Chinese measurement for distance), the fighters from DaLi under the command of Siau Tiok-Sing (FU SIGUI) and Tju Tan-Sin (ZHU DANCHEN) had also caught up with them. But the other wulin fighters and the Great monks of Shao Lin temple were still yet to be seen. Furthermore, they were still able to hear the faint sound from the battle inside the city of Lamkhia.

"So… those wulin fighters and the great monks of Shao Lin had been contained by the enemy inside the city, let us wait a moment longer." said Siau Hong

Not so long after that, the sound of battle could be heard even significantly louder this time.

Toan Ki felt uneasy and said "Toako (Big Brother) please wait here. I will go and help them. "

As soon as he said this, he instantly led top Dali fighters to proceed back to the city of Lamkhia.

Meanwhile, daybreak had arrived, and the sky had started to become bright. Siau hong himself felt sad and worried, he didn't know whether those wulin fighters from the mainland could escape or not.

The sound of the fightings could be heard louder and louder, and the top Dali fighters had penetrated back into the enemy's nest, but it appeared that the wulin fighters had not been able to escape from the containment.

Suddenly, one courrier from Kay-Pang (Gai Pang) arrived and reported "Thousands of Liao soldiers had seal up the Western gate, those top fighters from Dali were unable to break through their blockage, on the other hand, those Mainlaind fighters were also unable to penetrate outside."

Hi Tiok (XU ZHU) soon gave out a sign and exclaimed "Leng-Tjiu Kiong (Ling Jiu Chong) fighters please follow me to provide help there."

Soon, he led his own thousands of followers to strike back toward the city of Lamkhia.

From on top of his horse, Siau Hong tried to look behind him, and there he saw the city of Lamkhia was bursting with wisp of heavy smoke rising to the sky, there were many waves of heavy fires set ablazed, it was very difficult to imagine what the city had become in the myst of that chaotic battle.

After waiting for about half an hour, one courier came back with a report "Toan-onya from Dali (DUAN YU) and Hi Tiok Siansing from Leng-Tjiu Kiong (XU ZHU) have successfully broken through the enemy's containment and have attacked the heart of the city."

Normally, whenever there were battles Siau Hong always provide the leadership and was always in the frontline, but this time, he was only waiting from afar. So he felt very anxious and worried.

He finally said "Let me go and have a look !"

A Tji (AH ZI), Bok Wan-djing (MU WANQING) and Tjiong Ling (ZHONG LING) instantly tried to stop him. "Don't go, The Liaos are looking to capture you, please don't think about going through this danger."

"It's okay. Don't worry." replied Siau Hong.

He immediately let his horse galloped foward followed by all the Kay-Pang (GaiPang) members.

When he arrived at the Western gate of Lam Khia, he could see that underneath the city wall, on the sidewalks and along the ditch surrounding the city wall, there was full of dead corpses piling up on top of each other, hundreds of them. They were either Khitan soldiers or guards as well as the followers of Toan Ki or Hi Tiok.

Then the city gate was about to be closed down, but a couple of Totju (ISLAND LEADERS) subordinates of Hi Tiok could be seen swinging their weapons around, guarding the sides of the gate and fiercely pounding on the Liao soldiers who were trying to break through so that they were not able to close down the city gate.

Suddenly, a loud roars of horses' running footsteps could heard from the North and South, Siau Hong was shocked and yelled "Alas ! Massive numbers of Liao soldiers are trying to beseige us from the North and South."

He immediately jumped up, his foot tapped the city wall, and borrowed that counter-force to push his body to leap upward and landed on top of the city wall, from there he could see further inside the city. It appeared that on the West side of the city, in a radius of about more than one li (Li - Unit of Chinese measurement for distance) there were groups of people here and there. It turned out that those Mainland fighters had been cut off and separated by the Liao soldiers, who are larger in numbers, and they were surrounded in smaller groups.

Although those Mainland figthers possesed considerably high-level of martial arts, but if every one fighter had to fight against several up to tens of vagillant Liao soldiers, soon or later they would be overwhelmed.

While standing on the city wall, Siau Hong was able to see inside and outside the city. He became doubtful to face the situation of the battle. Those mainland fighters who were still surrounded, were fighting for their lives trying to save him, so it would be impossible for him to watch those Mainland fighters perished under the weapons of Liao soldiers without giving them any assistance at all. But if he were to jump down and help them, this would mean that he had purposedly made enemies with the Liaos and become a traitor of his own race, not only he would had committed major sins to his anchestors, but he would also be condemned and abhored by his own race forever.

If he were to just run away at that moment and left his own country, then his action would just be regarded as disloyal. But if he were to pick up a weapon and attack his own people and his own country, this would really be considered as the biggest, most sinful act of betrayal.

Normally Siau Hong always act fast and with confidence, but now he was really in a catch-22 situation.

At a glance, he could see that several Khitan fighters were surrounding two old Shaolin monks in the corner underneath the wall. One of the old Shaolin monks had a sabre, his mouth was vomiting blood, it's obviously that he had been badly injured.

Upon further observations, Siau Hong instantly recognized that the old Shaolin monk was Hian-Bing Taysu (pin yin ?). The other monk, who used a pole, was fighting for his life as well to protect his injured friend. The Monk who used the pole turned out to be Hian-Sik (pin yin ?).

At this time, the two Khitan fighters were lifting up their swords to chop at Hian-Bing direction. In an instant, Hian-Bing lifted up his right hand with the intention of blocking the attacks with his sabre. Unfortunately, his injury was too immense, so that when he only lifted up his arm around his chest high, he feft there was no more strength left. Immeditely Hian-Sik gave help, and he swung his pole.

    "Trraaannng - Trrraannnng"

Both of the enemies' swords bounched back. Hian Sik's strength was very powerful causing the two Khitan fighters to lose grips of their own weapons. The two swords chopped off their own skulls until broken into pieces.

Obviously Hian-Sik was very pleased. But suddenly he heard Hian-Bing was sreaming, his left shoulder was covered in blood, it turned out that he was also hurt by the enemy.

Without thinking twice, Hian-Sik responded by poking his pole so that Khitan fighter, who injured Hian-Bing, was struck and smashed his chest bones. And because of his attack trying to protect his friend, he himself became unaware of his own defense, this chance was utilized by another Khitan fighter to thrust his spear into his chest.

    "Brrrrssssstttt….. "

Hian-Sik didn't have a chance to block, his stomach was stabbed and the spear penetrated through his stomach until his torso was stuck onto the city wall. But Hian-Sik did not go down easily, with his last strength he suddenly screamed, his pole stroke downwards so that the head of that Khitan fighter was smashed into pieces and he died sooner than Hian Sik himself.

Looking how Hian-Sik's stomach was crucified onto the city wall and obviously he could not live anymore, Hian Bing became disarray and his sabre techniques became so disorganized, with tears flowing from his eyes, he screamed "Sute, Sute !" (Something like brother, brother)

Siau Hong's blood was boiling hot, he could not hold his emotion anymore, suddenly he shouted outloud "This is Siau Hong here ! If you want to kill, you can kill me, but do not kill other innocent people !"

At the same time, Siau Hong jumped down, his legs were put into action, before he even touched the ground, four Khitan figthers had been kicked by him until they flew off. Then after he stood up straight, he pullled Hian-Bing quickly with one hand and his other hand held Hian-Sik's pole while uttering "Hian-Sik Taysu, my help came too late, my sins are truly unmeasureable." Followed by swinging the pole he was holding so that two other Khitan fighters had to jump out of the way trying to avoid the blow.

"No, we were the ones who had betrayed Kiau-Pangtju as a Khitan. Our sins are much greater." replied Hian Sik smiling bitterly. "And fortunately, the problem has been clarified …… " before he could finish his sentence, his head nodded down. It turned out that his last breath had stopped completely.

While trying to protect Hian-Bing, Siau Hong immediately launched forward toward a couple of Dali fighters who were being surrounded by enemies on the left side.
Seeing that their Lam-ih Tay-Ong (XIAO FENG) suddenly showed up and superiorly vagilant, those Liao soldiers and guards cautiously became discouraged, On the other hand, Siau Hong didn't wait to work the pole around, eventhough he didn't want to kill anyone, nevertheless anyone who was hit by his pole would be injured.

Those Liao soldiers were screaming in fright and together they retreated back so that Siau Hong could attacked all around him very fast and without any obstacles. Within a short time he was able to gather and unite about two to three hundred Mainland fighters who were separated and surrounded earlier.

"Brothers, please try not to get separated again. Let's unite in a large group to fight together !" exclaimed Siau Hong.

He then led those 200 - 300 fighters and moved with them here and there, whenever there was a friend or friends who are surrounded by the enemy, they would approached them and help them to get out. The group of fighters slowly and gradually increased in numbers, until it consisted of about 1,000 fighters in total.

He immediately united them with the followers of Hi-Tioak, Toan Ki and other Mainland fighters under the command of Hian-to Taysu from Shaolin Temple and continued attacking toward the city gate. Siau Hong proceeded to the front first, he stood valorously on top the city gate and let the groups of fighters from Mainland, Dali, and Leng-Tjiu Kiong get out from city safely. The Liao soldiers who were trying to pursue earlier did not dare to rush forward, they were just screaming loudly from afar and were tremendously apprehended at their Lam-ih tay-Ong's aura of authority.

After waiting until everyone had escaped from the city wall safely, Siau Hong himself was the last person who escaped and followed them outside the city. When he looked behind him, he saw corpses sprawled around everywhere, piling up on top of each other. It was hard to described in words how many people have died in that fierce battle.

Then suddenly he saw among the corpses who were lying everywhere inside the city, there were two female fighters from Leng-Tjiu Kiong who were covered with blood and they were groaning and struggling trying to stand up but unfortunately, they didn't have any much power left in them.

Without thinking twice, Siau Hong launched another attack back inside the city, he grabbed the backs of those two women and rushed them back outside the city. But before he could go too far, suddenly he heard loud drums played which sounded like tremors of earthquakes, two legions of Liao soldiers in large numbers were attacking from the right and left side.

At that moment, Siau Hong's heart sunk. Those two legions of cavalaries had at least ten thousands soldiers in numbers, while his fighter friends on his side had been fighting for a long time, If they were not injured, they were at least too exhaustive, how in the world could they confront these two new legions of fresh enemy soldiers ?

He (XIAO FENG) quickly yelled "Brothers from Kay-Pang who are accompanying from the back, give out your horses to other friends who are injured and let them retreat first !"

Those Kay-Pang members nodded their heads simultaneously and together they jumped down from their horses.

Then Siau Hong followed with another yell.. "Prepare the Pak-Kau-Tay-Tin (THE GREAT DOG BEATING STICK FORMATION) !"

And so the voices and chanting of many beggars as if they were begging, while at the same time, organizing their Great Dog Beating Stick Formation layer after layer could be heard.

"Hian-To Taysu, Djite and Samte (refering to the Shaolin Monk leader, Xu Zhu, and Duan Yu), please take your followers to retreat toward the West first, let us guard the back line!" yelled Siau Hong again.

Underneath the sunlight, the tips of sabres and spears of the Liao soldiers appeared extremely shinny and their reflection hurt the eyes, tens of thousands of horses were running simultatenously about to attack them soon, the sound was indeed scaring every living souls and extremely frightening.

Looking at how monsterous the enemies' strength was, Hi-Tiok (XU ZHU) and Toan-Ki (DUAN YU) had figured out that the "Pak-Kau-tay-Tin" formation that was set up by Kay-Pang members, no matter how strong it was, would had troubles when trying to contain the enemy's powerful attack. So both of them immediately stood to the left and to the right of Siau Hong while saying "Toa Ko (BIG BROTHER), we are sworn brothers, if there is a problem, let us face it together, whether we are alive or death we should always be together."

"If so, then let's command your followers to retreat first," said Siau Hong

Hi-Tiok and Toan Ki hurriedly gave out the order to each of their own followers.

Who would ever thought that all the followers from Leng-tjiu-kiong refused to leave their leader to face the danger alone. Moreover, the fighters from Dali also refused to retreat and let their King face the Liao soldiers alone.

In the meantime, the Liao soldiers were getting closer and closer, the arrows that were released from their bows had almost reached the spot where Siau Hong and his friends were standing.

Hian-To was supposed to retreat first and led the remaining wulin fighters from Mainland, but now, knowing that Siau Hong's group was in a great danger, in an instant, there were tens of people among them running back to help Siau Hong's group.

Silently, Siau Hong sighed. He thought "Although these fighters' martial arts skills are quite high, but they are not familiar with war strategies and unaware of military disciplines, how are they capable of fighting against the Liao soldiers who are very significant in numbers ? My demise is certainly not a big deal, but if these friends of mine, also died in vain by the Liao soldiers outside this city of Lamkhia, then how am I ….."

While still in deep thoughts about what action he should take to face the inevitable, suddenly the loud sound of drums that hurt the ears, played continously, could be heard from the middle section of the those approaching soldiers. It was the sign to command the entire Liao soldiers to retreat.

As soon as they heard the sounds of the drum, at once, the Liao soldiers who were in the brink of attacking forward turned around simultaneously, their horses also turned around, their back lines changed to become their front lines and together in a unison, they retreated toward the North and South, the directions where they were originally coming from.

Just want to add some comments here....

We certainly see from the first 12 pages translated so far, how Siau Hong (XIAO FENG) has always been put in a catch-22 situation. He always had the dillema of being a Qidan person by blood and even a Sworn brother of the King of Liao, yet he had been raised as a Han person, all his life had been devoted to the Kingdom of Song, although he was framed at the end and lost the string of trust that tied him with all his Han friends.

Those old friends who betrayed him just because he was a Qidan person, had now accepted him again and even have gone the distance by risking all their lives to save him. At the same time, the man whom he considered as a Sworn Brother, even the same Blood, as Qidan person, the King of Liao, was blinded by power and lust for war, had imprisoned him because Xiao Feng did not support his decision to attack the kingdom of Song.

Obviously Xiao Feng cannot satisfy both. He has to choose between the two, while keeping the noble, heroic and trustworthy traits he had to all his friends, Qidan or Han. How would he do this ?

The next 23 pages, will intensify this dillema and struggle Xiao Feng was facing, where it finally leads to the inevitable, the great tragedy.

Siau Hong was astounded and didn't understand what had happened. Eventhough the Liao soldiers had retreated, but he could see dust flying so high from further at the back of the Liao soldiers line, accompanied by loud clamorous sound. It turned out that the back line of the Liao soldiers had been attacked by different soldiers.

Obviously Siau Hong became even more confused "Why is there another group of soldiers behind the Liao soldiers ? Could it be that there was a rebellion ? And if so, who are rebelling against them ? It seems like Hongsiong (THE KING OF LIAO) is being squeezed by the enemies from the back and the front, this is clearly not an advantageous situation."

That's how heroic his patriotic soul was, eventhough he had just escaped from the beseigement of thousands of Liao soldiers, now he already had deep concerns about Yalu Hung-Ki's (THE KING OF LIAO, his Sworn Brother) safety.

Looking at the Liao soldiers unexpectedly being pulled back, the Kay Pang members immediately screamed and shouted from the top of their lungs, but because Siau Hong did not give out any commands to follow, they did not dare to pursue and kill the retreating enemy soldiers.

When Siau Hong jumped up and stood up on his horse to look further to the backline of the Liao soldiers, he could see that there were many white flags being raised and waived, there were many arrows storming the air and huge numbers of Liao soldiers were struck and fell off their horses. Siau Hong finally realized and came to his senses "Ahhhhhh…. So it's my friends from the Nuchen tribe (JURCHEN) who had arrived and rescued me. Where did they come from ?"

The archery skills of those Nuchen hunters were extremely remarkable, they were also very brave and agile in battles. Every one-hundred of them was organized into one small batallion of soldiers, and they were riding their horses shouting endlessly attacking the middle section of the retreating Liao soldiers.

Because they had attacked using a surprised mode, at once the Liao soldiers became really confused and chaotic. Looking at how superbly agile and vagilant those Nurchen warriors were, the high-ranked military officer of Liao soldiers smelt the unfavorable result of the battle, he was worried that the fighters who were led by Siau Hong would also squeeze them further from the opposite direction, so he immediately gave out the sign to withdraw all his troops.

Hoan Hwa had a Suma (pinyin ?) title or the Minister of War of the Dali Kingdom, so he was an expert in military skills. He saw that there is a good opportunity, he immediately suggested to Siau Hong "Siau-tayong, let's attack them now, this is the right time to annihilate the enemy completely."

But Siau Hong only shook his head.

"The distance from here to the Gan-Bun-Koan (YAN MEN GUAN) is too far, if we don't use this great opportunity to destroy the Liao soldiers, it will be disadvantageous for us in the future," explained Hoan Hwa further. "Not to mention the total number of the enemy soldiers is too overwhelming and there is only small number of us, we might not be able to get away from here securedly and safely."

Nevertheless, Siau Hong still shook his head disapproving that idea.

Hoan Hwa really could not comprehend, he thought "Siau-tayong doesn't want to attack and kill the enemy soldiers, I'm afraid that he might hope that one day he could expiate his relationship with the King of Liao ?"

At this time, it could be seen that those Nuchen warriors were separated into smaller groups, all baring their naked chests, but some of them were wearing the overcoats made from skins of animals, still attacking their enemies while shooting their arrows toward the Liao soldiers, so that the enemies became even more disarray.

There were more than 1,000 Liao soldiers who couldn't escape inside the city on time, they were all struck by arrows and killed underneath the city wall.

After those Nuchen warriors killed their enemies, they always immediately cut off their heads and hung those heads on their belts. So among those Nuchen warriors, some of them had tens of beheaded heads hanging from their waists.

The Mainland fighters had tons of fighting experiences from numerous fierceful battles in their lifetime, but these types of cruel murders and barbaric tortures done by the Nuchen warriors was the first time they had ever witnessed. Consequently, they were shocked beyond beliefs.

Suddenly, among those Nuchen warriors, a huge and tall man appeared while yelling outloud "Siau-toako (Big Brother XIAO), Siau-toako, WanyanAkut (WANYAN AGUDA) had come to help you fight the Khitans!"

It turned out that he was the Swornbrother of Siau hong when they met each other at Tiang-Pek-San (Mount Tiang Pek , pin yin ?) a while ago. His name was Wanyan Akut from the Nuchen tribe.

"Siau-toako, in the past, you had left us without saying a word, I was truly worried and missed you so much," said Akut (AGUDA).

"Then from our spies, we found out that you had been appointed as a High Official in the kingdom of Liao, this is not a big deal. But those Liao people are very cunning, I had thought that your position would not last very long. And it turned out to be true. Just recently, the Spies told us another news, he said that you had been imprisoned by that Bastard King of Liao, and treated as if you were an animal, we were extremely worried at you. So instantly we rushed here. Thank Godness, Siau-toako turned out to be alive, we are very grateful."

"Thank you so much for your assistance, my Swornbrother" replied Siau Hong.

Just when he only said these words, suddenly thousands of arrows were sprawling down from the top of the citywall into their direction. Fortunately, the distance from the citywall to where they were was quite far so that the arrows were unable to reach them.

"Bastards, those Liao dogs, I was just talking to Toako, why did they intentionally distract our conversation ?" Akut cursed angrily. After finishing his sentences, he pulled the string on his bow back, followed by shooting his arrows three times in a row from underneath toward the the top of the citywall, then three simulatineous screams were heard, three Liao soldiers had been hit and fell down.

The arrows released by the Liao soldiers could not reach where they were standing, but on the other hand, three of Akut's arrows easily knocked down three Liao soldiers. One could just imagine how strong and accurate the archery skills of that Nuchen warrior. Consequently, those Liao soldiers were very intimidated, while screaming they instantly put on their shields.

In the mean time the sound of drums from inside the city of Lamkhia still could be heard boisterously, it sounded like those Liao soldiers were once again gathering their forces together. Immediately, Akut exclaimed to his soldiers "Hi there my fellow friends, listen to me ! Those Khitan dogs are gettting ready to get out from their dog holes, let's prepare to annihilate them until our heart feel satisfied !"

Those Nuchen warriors suddenly yelled with tremendous exaltation as if thousands of wild beasts who were roaring simultaneously.

Siau Hong secretly felt worried. If the battles did happen, then the casualties who would be killed from both sides would not be small in number. Hurriedly he said "My most-kind brother, your arrival here is to help me and now, I have escaped from the danger, why should you continue fighting with them ? It's been a long time since we last met, let's find a safe and quiet place to catch up and drink to our heart's content."
