Default Star Wars Trilogy vs LoTR Trilogy

Yes, which one do you prefer? Yes, I am excluding the prequels.

Don't let nostalgia blind you. Don't let sfx blind you. But then, since these are a matter of personal preferences, it really doesn't matter.

I Love the original Star War and I love LoTR

    Where is the both choice

But comparing the new Star War (unless the last one blow everyone away which I doubt) Then I would have to pick LOTR.

But the original SW is classic just as LoTR will be too

Dude. REREAD my first post. I'm counting ONLY the original trilogy, and not the prequels.

I love the Star Wars Trilogy because of its characters and great special effects(it was very good back in the 80s). LOTR seems pretty boring long. The novel wasn't that great either.

    Talking

    IMO , as individual movies,

the three LOTR movies : Excellent - Average - Good

Star wars orginal Trilogy : Good - Excellent - Average

but it viewed together as a whole, my opinion is

    LOTR : Excellent - Good - Excellent
    Starwars : Average - Good - SuckED

heh heh.. the tainting of the starwars francise did not begin with the prequels.. it's already in the orignals , notably in Eps VI ...

NOT only is "returned of the Jedi" the weakest of the lot, it also destroyed the coolness of the first 2 movies..,
    eg..
It's hard to take the battles in the first 2 movies seriously , now that you know Imperial troops are baffoons who can't even handle a few teddy bears armed with sticks and stones..

I rather watched the LOTR trilogy than SW.. with lOTOR the payoff at the end is worth it . While Starwars trilogy endingl leave a bad taste..

Ditto. Star Wars to me is a classic. LOTR is not even comparable IMO, far from it.
My obsessions: Joy Division, New Order, Bones, The Office.

Here's how I see the movies...

    LOTR: FOTR ....................... bad
LOTR: TTT .......................... average to good
    LOTR: ROTK ....................... average

I am being sincere about my feeling of LOTR. I really wanted to like FOTR but I just couldn't. I was bored from start to finish. My interest of LOTR peeked with TTT because I got used to the characters and I like Aragorn and found Gollum quite interesting but as a whole, I still found myself bored at many scenes. ROTK was pretty blah. I thought that I already seen the battles in TTT. It was pretty average throughout until the end where it simply sucked. Hug, cry, cry, kiss, hug, kiss, cry, cry, hug, kiss... Oh my gosh, I couldn't believe it.

    Star Wars .......................... excellent
The Empire Strikes Back .... awesome
Return of the Jedi .............. very good

There are so many things I like about the Star Wars Trilogy but I think what really made it special were the characters. I cared for every single one of them, good or bad. And I absolutely love Han Solo. The score also is a huge attraction to me. It conveyed the different moods perfectly. Star Wars was an introduction to a world that I've never seen before nor could I have ever imagined. It just blew me away and even today, I am still impressed with that fictional world with the protocol droids and such. Empire was and still is THE movie I like the most. I really fell for the characters in this one and lots of emotions appear each time I see Empire. There are some pretty funny and cool lines, especially when Leia said "I love you" to Han and he replied with "I know". It's simple yet so effective and very appropriate to the character. Return of the Jedi is the weekest of the three but I still like it a lot. The Ewoks were too cute for movie's own good but I did find myself liking them if not overjoyed by them. Jedi could have been excellent but came up a little bit short but I really like Luke's battle against the dark force and it balance the movie against the teddy bears.

If I may add the Prequels just to compare, I'd rate them as...

    TPM .................................... bad to average
    AOTC .................................. average

Well, putting aside the comparisons of quality, which is a pretty subjective thing. I can say that the LoTR movies aren't too shabby in terms of what they've achieved. What SW is to some people now will be what LoTR is to people in the future. Cultural milestone. 20 years from now, I dare say that people will still look back at LoTR with as much love as what some people do with SW right now.

    heheh.... I'm going for LOTR
(yup....you can say I'm a huge Tolkien fan... so of course LOTR will be my choice)
The movie was absolutly great too (even though there is a few scenes I believe SHOULD have been in the movie.... but heck...you can't follow the book 100%. What PJ have done is excellent)

SW is good too.... but I don't know why... I've never been amazed by it that much.....even though it's one of R.A Salvatore's work (I love Salvatore... especially "the dark elf trilogy")

The only thing SW amazed me is the legend/word/ don't-know-what-to-call-it
"he created the chaos and ended it"

but...again.....isn't it wrong to compare these too?
I mean we are talking about 2 different kind of "world"

Nah, this topic is more about asking people's preferences than making comparisons.

There's nothing wrong in asking people's preference of movies. It is very subjective and there is no right or wrong. Some prefer oranges, others prefer apples. Myself, I like to read others' view on each movie. It's fun to see how our taste can vary greatly.

I believe the cultural milestone was greater with the release of Star Wars because it literally changed Hollywood for better or for worse depending on opinions, but it nonetheless did changed how blockbusters were viewed ever since. I don't know if LOTR changed Hollywood in anyway. The LOTR movies were grand, the project itself was a huge mountain to climb but the expectation was also high. Although the CGI in LOTR is among the best we've seen so far, if not the best, computer animated effects are nothing new. What is special about LOTR is the scope of the trilogy and many were dazzled by it but I don't think it revolutionized the movie industry nor did it knock spectators out of their galaxy. Myself, I expected something really big from the LOTR because I knew that with today's technology, many things were possible if done with care. In the case of Star Wars, it was something nobody had ever experienced before. It was a total surprise for the whole world. If LOTR came out at the time of Star Wars, it could have had the same impact (without CGI of course but with top notch special effects) but it came out at a period where CGI was already discovered by many.

Call me stupid but I don't get the above. What does R.A. Salvatore has anything to do with Star Wars? Am I missing something?

I think Salvatore have some input on the prequal... he might be the author for the story.
