Avatars are the pictures you see under some people's user name. For example, James and I both have avatars.

Now, newcomers can have avatars, but they have to pick one from the collection that SPC offers. After a certain number of posts (at least that's how it used to work), you can upload your own, meaning if you made one, you can upload it to the forum server, and then it'll appear.
