Kevin Cheng Parties Until 4:30 AM Celebrating Triple Awards
Thursday December 8, 2011 Hong Kong
    Credits: to Jayne @ http://www.jaynestars.com

Winning three awards at the 2011 TVB Anniversary, TV King Kevin Cheng (鄭嘉穎) excitedly shared the victory with fifty fans outside TVB City last night. Fans prepared a cake and a “fourth award” for Kevin, who popped two bottles of champagne in excitement.

After the Anniversary Awards, Kevin posed for some photos for the TVB magazine and headed to Wan Chai at 2 AM, attending the private celebration party organized by Myolie Wu (胡杏兒). In attendance were also Virginia Lok (樂易玲), Sharon Chan (陳敏之), Nancy Wu (胡定欣), Koni Lui (呂慧儀), Sire Ma (馬賽), Mandy Wong (黃智雯), Johnson Li (李思捷) and numerous other celebrities. Kevin partied until 4:30 AM and staggered away drunk, requiring the support of Ben Wong (黃智賢) when they stepped out.

Yesterday afternoon, Kevin resumed filming Ghetto Justice 2 <怒火街頭II>. His face appeared tired and he obviously had a hangover from last night. “Right now, I feel a bit wing wing!”

In an interview with Eileen Cha (查小欣), Kevin discussed his fe elings upon receiving three awards at the 2011 TVB Anniversary Awards. “Last night, I was very surprised. I felt it was okay in receiving the My Favorite Male Character Award and it was a pleasant surprise to receive the Best Actor Award. When the results for Best Actor were announced, my heart was beating very quickly. My brain blanked out when I received the Best Actor Award, which is why my acceptance speech was a bit disorganized.

“Michael Tse (謝天華) also possessed a high chance in winning Best Actor, as his performance was very good. There was also a chance that Wayne Lai (黎耀祥) would win the award for the third time. As a result, my mood was quite unsteady.” Kevin considered that he might lose. Wearing a bright red suit at the awards ceremony, Kevin joked, “If I were to lose, I should not lose in the wardrobe department!”

In 2006, Kevin Cheng won the TVB Best Actor Award for his performance in Under the Canopy of Love <天幕下的戀人>, sparking extreme controversy. This year, Kevin finally shone in his [well-deserved win]. Kevin said, “After receiving the award in 2006, I was attacked. At the time, I vowed that if I were to receive another award, it is necessary to receive the majority consensus. Five years later, I finally accomplished this goal!” Indicating that there were many years left in his TVB contract, Kevin denied extending his contract for the awards.

TVB Anniversary Awards Results: Kevin Cheng & Myolie Wu supported by management and producers

Thursday, December 08, 2011 Hong Kong
    Source: Sina Entertainment
    Translation: llwy12@ http://asianfanatics.net

As was the case in past years, the results of this year’s TVB Anniversary Awards have garnered criticism from some audiences for being unfair, with the primary complaint this time being that Kevin Cheng won 3 awards while Michael Tse went home empty-handed. According to reports, this year, audience’s votes counted for 40% of the total, TVB’s Management votes counted 30%, and Producers’ votes counted for 30%. Besides most of the management and producers supporting Kevin for TV King this year, it is said that majority of audiences voted overwhelmingly for Kevin as well, making him the natural winner of the award this year.

Kevin Cheng overwhelmingly supported by management

According to reports, Kevin Cheng received 6 out of 7 votes from TVB’s management for TV King. Those who voted for him include: Stephen Chan, Virginia Lok, Catherine Tsang, director of program development Pang Jai Choi, assistant director of programming Ho Koon Chung, production manager Chan Ka Yeung; the only executive who voted for Michael Tse was drama production head Tommy Leung. As for TV Queen, the results were also 6 to 1 in favor of Myolie Wu, with production head Catherine Tsang the only one who voted for Fala Chan.

Also, in addition to gaining the favor of management and the audiences, Kevin also received support from majority of the producers, who overwhelmingly voted for him for TV King. It is said that Kevin’s performance in “Ghetto Justice” caused many of the producers to see him in a new light, plus they saw the effort he put into the role, despite being only the 4th choice for that role (the other 3 actors originally invited to take on that role declined).

The day after the award ceremony, head of production and resources Virginia Lok attended an event and emphasized that the awards result was fair and just. Asked about Michael Tse not receiving any awards at all, she replied: “I will tell him not to be discouraged and continue to work hard.” Asked whether Michael cried afterwards, she stated: “Laughing Gor is strong, he is able to endure it. Fala [Chan] didn’t get any awards either – she told us not to give the award to her because she is not ready for it yet.”

Newly crowned TV King and Queen highly paid in Mainland

Even though newly crowned TV King and Queen Kevin Cheng and Myolie Wu celebrated together into the early morning hours after the awards ceremony, they were only able to take a short rest before having to continue work on new series “Ghetto Justice 2”; after that, both will be traveling to the Mainland to film series.

Next month, Kevin will be collaborating with Michael Tse in the 30 episode Mainland series “Hero” – it is rumored that Kevin’s salary in the Mainland jumped from 160,000 yuan per episode to 250,000 yuan, easily earning him 1 million yuan for 1 series. During his acceptance speech, Kevin emphasized that he did not ‘exchange contract for award’, as his current contract with TVB isn’t set to expire until 2016. After filming “Hero”, he will be participating in a series that will be a joint collaboration between TVB and CCTV.

As for Myolie, she will be filming in Hengdian shortly. Currently at TVB, she receives a salarly of 10,000 HKD per episode, however it is reported that her salary in the Mainland will increase tenfold to 120,000 yuan per episode.

Kevin Cheng: “My Life Is Marked by High Peaks and Deep Pits!”
Thursday December 1, 2011 Hong Kong
    Credits: to Jayne @ http://www.jaynestars.com/news

The recent broadcast of mainland series, Bu Bu Jing Xin <步步驚心>, led to a sudden burst in Kevin Cheng’s (鄭嘉穎) popularity in China, with his salary shooting through the stratosphere as well. However, when Kevin was working in Taiwan a decade ago, his career hit rock bottom and he did not even have money to buy dinner, requiring his mother’s cash assistance instead. Perhaps now, it was the right time for Kevin’s meteoric rise!

Kevin noted, “My life is marked by dramatic ups and downs. There were several low pits in my life, ha ha, the rock bottom period was when I was working in Taiwan. After the release of my first album in Taiwan, the Asian financial crisis hit, which resulted in a delay in production of my second album.”

Did Not Know What to Do With Idle Time

“When I was a singer, I did not have much to do after the recording of a song. The most was spending time to practice singing. However, you cannot practice for more than a few hours each day. In this manner, a day passed and another day passed…. After six months passed, my second album has not been released yet. My anticipation in awaiting the album’s release slowly turned to disenchantment.

“In my idle time, I bought some cooking books to learn how to cook so that I can save money. My earlier savings had slowly depleted by almost 80 percent. Although I had already spent two years in Taiwan, I released only one album. The music company told me that the sales were only lukewarm. At that time, I had little earning power and depended on my family for help to pay for meals. Without my mother’s support, there was no way I could continue to work in the entertainment industry!

    Making a Comeback Through TVB

“My financial distress lasted for over one year. During this time, it was the lowest point in my life. I had nothing to do each day, only going out to buy groceries, cook meals, and read books to pass the time. It was not until Lee Kwok Lap (李國立) invited me to film Taiwanese drama, The Legendary Siblings <絕代雙驕>, that I became an actor. For a certain time, I resisted in the idea of turning from a singer to an actor.

“Without The Legendary Siblings, then I would not have signed a contract with TVB. ATV purchased the broadcasting rights of The Legendary Siblings to air in Hong Kong, which attracted TVB’s notice that I could act. TVB invited me to come back to Hong Kong to film for them. Since my return to TVB, things have been smoother.”

Poor Kevin. But only a few lucky ones became famous overnight.

Kevin may be a late bloomer, but at least he has the chance to bloom. There are so many hidden talents in the industry. Luck plays a very large part of whether one makes it big.

That's why I don't know why Wallace Huo gave it all up when he was so famous ever since the launch of his first drama. He's one of those became famous overnight. I guess he's too young to treasure it. But luckily he made his way slowly back to the spotlight in the Mainland.

Perhaps Wallace was shocked at his overnight success and couldn't handle the avalanche of attention heaped on him. He's a very private guy and I think he needed to take a few steps back to refocus. He was quite young and if not careful, the star power could easily bring him to the dark side. The higher you are, the harder you fall. There are advantages to gaining back popularity with hard work and determination

Kevin Cheng, the comeback kid of 2011

Every actor craves for a breakthrough role and the same applies for Hong Kong TVB actor Kevin Cheng, who has been meandering in showbiz for close to two decades.

But the times are a-changing now for the 42-year-old actor, who is currently riding on an all-time career high after consecutively picking up three Best Actor trophies for Ghetto Justice -- in a span of two weeks -- at Malaysia's Astro Awards, Hong Kong's TVB Awards and the recent Asian Television Awards.

His stellar and convincing turn as a rogue lawyer in the TVB series won him rave reviews all around and placed Kevin on the fast-track towards regional success. Plus he's gaining fame in the Mainland China after starring in hit period drama series, Startling by Each Step (also known as Bu Bu Jing Xin), one of China's top-rated drama series for 2011 which also single-handedly revived co-star Nicky Wu's flagging career.

Looking dapper in a black bow-tie suit ensemble in an interview with xinmsn at Shangri-La Hotel last week, Kevin came across as an affable chap who speaks his mind without sounding brash or haughty. One might allude his sincere and humble disposition to the bumpy start he experienced in showbiz during his days as a singer in Taiwan, where he barely scraped through with financial assistance from his mother.

When he first started acting in TVB dramas in 2002, Kevin admitted that he "did not harbour much interest in acting" and saw it as a way of "getting by" with life back then.

"My interest in acting was cultivated over the years. I wanted to get better at the craft and often marvelled at the acting capabilities or other actors. The more you want to be good at something, the more time and effort you invest in it," he conceded.

Speaking on reports which alleged that he bargained for the acting awards in exchange for renewing his contract with TVB, Kevin lamented, "Such reports negate all the hard work you have put in over the years because the award then becomes something you do not deserve.

"My contract is not up for renewal yet and this [TVB] award was based on audience votes as well."

With his newfound fame in China, xinmsn asked Kevin if he plans to focus his sights on conquering the Chinese market now. The Chinese-American actor expressed his hopes to "achieve a balance" by dividing his time fairly between both markets.

Set to spend the first half of 2012 in China and the second-half of the year in Hong Kong, Kevin acknowledged that "China is a market with a lot of possibilities" and added, "There are plenty of [Chinese] actors that I have yet to work with; unlike in TVB where I have worked with most of the actors there."

Reminiscing on the good times he spent in Heng Dian, China, with the BBJX (Bu Bu Jing Xin) cast, the strapping actor-singer shared that they "got along well" and are "all good friends now".

He admits that it's not easy for colleagues to strike up a personal friendship with each other, and said that his relationship with this group of Chinese actors "is hard to come by".

"That is a special show because we spent a lot of time together living in this place provided by the production company. We lived and cooked together and played ping-pong in the basement of the building. We even climbed across the gates to play basketball and badminton in the school next door. (Chuckles)

"It was a repeat of varsity life for all of us during that few months. The bonds we forged in this relationship are different; it is also because of the people there -- they are all good people," Kevin poignantly quipped.

Known for his love for noodles, it's common to see Kevin being teased by his fellow BBJX cast on said dish from his exchange on Weibo with them.

Apart from consuming noodles for breakfast and supper while filming in China, Kevin sheepishly admitted, "I eat noodles very often because I find it convenient, helps that it tastes good too. (Chuckles)"

When we quizzed him on his plans to open a noodle eatery in future, he immediately piped up, "Yes, I've thought of it but I realised that it needs to be unique. For example, there are too many wanton noodles stores in Hong Kong. I need to mull over it and maybe open one with a unique offering in future."

Can hardly wait for the airing! I hope LA Law is still super cool like he was in part 1. I'm not liking the idea of bringing in another women between Kris and LA since love triangles tend to get boring after awhile. Plus, LA is just too cool to be tied down by relationships
