Perhaps it's really me that failed to grasp that particular scene.
(However, it could also be a difference of perspective you're men and I am a woman. So perhaps we look at this with a different angle. My "woman's intuition" tells me nothing happened. But that isn't proof, is it?)

I don't know but I feel if Shen Lang and Bai FeiFei were to have a son. That son should be smarter and not so naive as A Fei. Bai FeiFei herself said their child would be a magnificent person no matter son or daugther. A Fei is quite remarkable man but he doesn't really leave a good impression (in my humble opinion).
Also A Fei's martial arts are nowhere near Shen Lang or Bai FeiFei. Wouldn't Bai FeiFei impart or leave the "Spirit Manual" for A Fei?

(Very confused now)
Couldn't A Fei be another descendant from the Shen family? A nephew, cousin, whatever,?
The Shen family was a rather prominent WuLin family in that time.
I don't know anymore, I wish Gu Long was still alive so we could ask him what happened.
So huge, so hopeless, to conceive
As these that twice befell
Parting is all we know of heaven
And all we need of hell.

Well, Ah Fei's naiveness can be forgiven due to his upbringing and age. By the time of Bian Cheng Lang Zi, it's obvious that he has become a legend. XLFD is suppose to show his coming of age.

No. I'm just feeling a bit anti-social right now, and besides, everyone this is the time of all my first tests in school, so everyone's studying, except for me of course, who's translating. Don't mean to brag or anything, but I am a good test taker, but apparently horrible at avoiding horrible sentence structures.

Ah Fei was an intelligent man. His naivete comes from him being an orphan. Remember, if Bai FeiFei was his mother, Shen Lang was never around and she died when he was seven. It's the whole nature vs. nurture thing. I'm sure he inherited a lot of good genes from his parents but it can only go so far. He is certainly a bright person and a natural, fast fighter. But he didn't have any formal training in martial arts.

So why didn't Bai FeiFei train him or give him the manual? He was only a small child when she died. There is only so much he could have learned from her up to that point. As for why he didn't have the manual? I don't know. Maybe he had other things to worry about at that age, like survival. I wouldn't be too surprised if he never learned how to read.

His martial arts (well, he didn't have any really) was not up to par with Shen Lang but I think he could have beaten Bai FeiFei during his "Sentimental Swordsman, Ruthless Sword" level. He was as good as Qing MoMing who was a top fighter as well. And later, in the sequels, Ah Fei becomes MUCH more powerful.

But who knows if theres any conclusive evidence to all this parentage thing. Like you said, maybe he's nephew of Shen Lang. But I don't see him reacting the way he did when he heard his name, unless he had a much closer bond...

Hi Meh, just another reader wanting to give you some appreciation for all the efforts and time you have spent on the translation.

You have been doing an excellent work with the translation

I believe currently you are having some exams/tests? Good luck with the tests, and hope you can get back to the translation work afterwards

Meh,
I did not get the flying dagger lee as I thought. The book I got was called 'the blade of short knife'. It is several short stories about a gambler and a man called Guan Yi (?).

That sucks, Goofy.

I can't translate right now. I'm currently pondering when I'm going to start on this research paper that's going to count 20% towards my final grade. I've been pondering for 3 weeks now and can only ponder for another 1.5 weeks before the due date hits. I've never been afraid of tests(as evidenced by my putting up 5 chapters during exam weeks), but research papers kill me. I absolutely hate them with a passion.

Just wanted to mention that I also really appreciate your translations!! I don't have time to try reading the novels in Chinese, but I'm incredibly happy whenever anyone updates a Gu Long or Jin Yong translation. Thanks!! Good luck with your research paper!! Try to look at them as...learning experiences. They'll make you a stronger person.

Meh, I finished reading xiao 11 part II and still didn't like it as much. (I absolutely hate Sim's weakness.)

I also read 3rd master Jia's sword and think that Jia or 13 must be as equal as Ximun blowing blood.

Can you recommend another GL's novels to me?

Glad to see you're reading some GL novels. The 2nd part of The 11th Son is not as good as the first part, imo. And yes, Shen Bijun is one of the most annoying characters I've ever read. In fact, she's so annoying I actually liked her better in the adaptations!

Since you've read the "3rd Young Master's Sword", you really should read "Full Moon, Crescent Sabre", which is sort of a sequel. This is also one of my most favorite Gu Long books, even though Gu Long did not write it. How's that for not making sense.

I feel that li's dagger worked best in threatening people. Not that it is not good, but it seems li bluff his opponents most of the time.

wow, so the lin girl is really a ****! I didn't refer on her sleeping around but on her cruelty.

Wasn't she afraid of getting pregnant?

Anyway, how come men still treat her well. I thought people value ladies in those days.

The Peacock Feather was also a very good bluff weapon. I have never even seen it used but it scares everyone. I'm surprised it wasn't in Bak Heal Seng's Book of Weapons since it existed at during the same time period as Lee's Flying Dagger.

Goofy: We get more explanation on Li Xun Huan's dagger later on the story, when the very top fighters of the era starts to appear. You're right that Li Xun Huan certainly has an amazing reputation. When most other GL heroes(like Ah Fei) say things like "you're not worthy to be my opponent", usually no one would believe him, and then proceed to get slaughtered. But if Li Xun Huan says it, usually people would back off.

TigerWong: Maybe it's because the the Peacock Mansion isn't really involved with martial world at this time. But most likely it's an oversight by Gu Long.

Or because Gu Long wrote Sentimental Swordsman before The Peacock Feather.

But still, it woulda been cool to see it in the book. Peacock Manor should already have been famous during that time.

Great translations guys, keep up the good work!!
I must admit that I've not been patient enough to wait for your translations. I've been reading the online Chinese versions at www.shuku.net.

This is a fantastic story ... I think the best is yet to come. Li Chum Foon is certainly a great hero and an even greater man. Can anyone tell me what the sequel is called?

I seem to remember a TV adaptation a long time ago which is about Li's martial descendant Yip Hoi (leaf open) and what I would take as Ah Fei's descendant, Fu Hung Suet (red snow). Can't remember the program name now.

There are several sequels, but the one right after Siu Lei Fei Dao is Bien Tsing Long Tze (Border Town Wanderer). Fu Hung Sheut is not Ah Fei's descendant though Ah Fei does make a cameo appearance.

One BIG QUESTION!!!

What type of imperial exam lee was in? Aren't there two types - scholar and martial arts?

did the story explain why he did not be in the government?

He took the scholarly one. That's why people keep emphasize the fact that he's a Tan Hua. Because it's so rare to find someone who's, as the saying goes, "Wen Wo Shuang Quan"(excellent at both martial and scholarly skills).

When I post up the rest of the chapter, you'll know why he's not an official. Actually, I've already done translating that part. Just another 1/4 of a chapter and I can post it here.
