The style is NOT a nickname, it is a second name to describe or enhance the meaning of one's first name. Yang Guo's style was Gaizhi, this was stated in LOCH, when Yang Guo's mom asked Guo Jing and Huang Rong to name her son, and in ROCH at the Heroes' Meeting when Guo Jing asked Yang Guo if he knew the meaning of his name.

Only a few characters have style names. Another one apart from Yang Guo I can think of is Xie Xun. The reason is that (at least in the wuxia world) only those who were into literature and arts would have style names, whereas those into martial arts would just have nicknames instead. Those who were good at both (such as Xie Xun) would have both.

I think only someone whose parents have some literature knowledge has style names. There is no one who creates his own style name.
And if that person is in literature or martial art, he'll be called with a tittle that he made up himself or got it from someone.
