Default Double Edge Swords vs Single Edge Swords

In Wuxia, it appears double edge swords are more popular than single edge swords.
I wonder why. Single edge swords are as practical as double edge swords without the risk of cutting urself with the back edge. I can see how double edge swords can have better offense if you use the back edge but that's pretty uncommon esp with heavy swords, and u lose out on alot of defensives moves since you have to worry about the back edge. So how come swordsmen prefer double edge swords? Is it because it simply looks better? In japan, the opposite is true, single edge swords are dominant.

Well, first I want to know if single-edged swords were common or not in Ancient China. Because the Chinese character is 'jian' for double-edged sword. What is the Chinese word for single edged sword? If it exists then there must be a Chinese character for it.

What usually is called as 'single-edged sword' is usually 'dao' (sabre). Dao actually is a general term for knife/all sorts of knife.

All single-edged weapons in China are refered to as Dao(s) aka sabres aka broadswords aka knives, there really no exact english word for it.

And why double edged swords are more popular? They are considered a romantic weapon, it is a "gentleman's weapon" of martial arts with its moves more graceful than the dao. but outdated as a battlefield weapon by at least Tang.

In TV series, I've seen double edged spears and they can take it apart and it becomes two short spears. I forgot which series is...but I think double edged weapons can give them reinforcement when they're out numbered or opponents who are stronger or something?
