If I recall correctly, didn't Shaw Brothers later sell the big village (which they used to film those old movies) to TVB?

Run Run Shaw is also the chairman of the board of TVB.

    Review

In late Autumn, at dawn, 6 swordsman gather patiently at the Maple Forest on the outskirts of Luoyang to stake their claim to the title of ‘best swordsman’ in the martial arts underworld. Moments later a swordsman dressed in black robes emerges from the dirt path. We learn this swordsman is none other than Yen Shih Shen (played by Ling Yun), a swordsman with supreme abilities and talents. He challenges the swordsmen to a duel, boasting that he could kill all 6 of them within 13 stances. They immediately engage in a heated battle as a result. But it doesn’t last for long as Yen Shih Shen is able to slain each of the swordsmen one by one. By now he had killed 4 of them and still had 3 stances left. The remaining swordsmen glanced at each other in shock and horror.

Using his last 3 stances Yen Shih Shen strikes down the last 2 swordsmen before sheathing his sword. Noticing that someone had been observing the battle from within the Maple Forest, Yen Shih Shen immediately demands that they step out in the open to greet him. But it was not one person, but rather two. They were the Yu Mien Brothers. Deadly assassins from the notorious Mu Yung clan that seeks to dominate the martial arts underworld. Noticing that the Yu Mien Brothers had brought their swords with them Yen Shih Shen asks whether they wished to duel with him. But that was not the reason for which the Yu Mien Brothers had come. They admit that they wished to kill Yeh Shih Shen. But not on this particular day. A little shocked by their response Yen Shih Shen enquires “Why not today?”.

A third mysterious swordsman named Wu Ya steps out from behind a large tree. He states that he had heard a rumour that Yen Shih Shen was to kill another person first before the Yu Mien Brothers would be allowed to fight him. This was obviously news to Yen Shih Shen. Before Yen Shih Shen can even question the mysterious swordsman, the answer he sought arrived in the form of Mu Yung Chiu Ti (played by Chen Ping), the current leader of the Mu Yung clan. She had arrived with numerous lackeys by her side. After the formalities and introductions are over, Yen Shih Shan is advised by Mu Yung Chiu Ti that he must kill the Third Master (played by Derek Yee) if he wished to claim the title of ‘best swordsman’ in the martial arts underworld.

According to Mu Ying Chiu Ti the act of killing 6 swordsmen in 13 stances alone does not qualify or prove that Yen Shih Shen is the ‘best swordsman’ especially when there is currently a man named the Third Master who is head of the Supreme Sword Manson and is widely regarded by many as the “Sword God”. Yen Shih Shen is no fool and realise that their must be an ulterior motive, namely revenge, to Mu Yung Chu Ti’s visit. She admits that Yen Shih Shen had guessed correctly and that she wished to avenge the deaths of the 46 clan members that had died at the edge of the Third Master’s sword. Before leaving Mu Yung Chu Ti taunts Yen Shih Shen. She tells him that he did not have to confront the Third Master if he did not wished to because many had died under his blade. Also in her eyes she believes that Yen Shih Shen is no match for the Third Master’s sword.

These words are enough to stir Yen Shih Shen into action. He catches a boat from the Green Water Lake to the Supreme Sword Mansion hoping to duel with the Third Master to decide who the best swordsman in the martial arts underworld is. But he is greatly disappointed upon being informed that he is 2 weeks too late for the duel. According to the housekeeper the Third Master has passed away through illness.

Meanwhile somewhere in the city of Luoyang, a lonely figure crouches in the darkness atop a flight of stairs behind a brothel. He is coughing madly, indicating that he is suffering from the chilly night. Although his robes are torn, he has a noble look and feel about him. A kind and gentle soul known as Mute (played by Fan Mei Sheng) notices the young man’s suffering and decides to hand him a bowl of rice to eat. The two converse and we uncover that the young man is named Ah Chi (played by Derek Yee). The brothel owner spots the two talking and is immediately upset with Mute for feeding Ah Chi for free. To pay for the meal Ah Chi decides to work as a cleaner at the brothel. He and Mute immediately become good friends.

Whilst working at the brothel Ah Chi is constantly teased by the girls. They immediately label him as ‘Hopeless Ah Chi’. The only one who showed any concern for Ah Chi and stood up for him was a shy but pretty girl named Hsiao Li (played by Yu An An). One night Hsiao Li had problems with an overly aggressive customer. Ah Chi immediately steps in to help her. But the customer only agreed to let Hsiao Li go when Ahi Chi allowed him to stab him twice in the arms with a sharp knife. When taking the blows to his arms Ah Chi did not even wince or show signs of pain. That immediately forced the customer to flee for his life.

When news of this incident spread throughout the city of Luoyang, the mysterious swordsman named Wu Ya paid a visit to the brothel to enquire on the whereabouts of Ah Chi. The brothel owner told Wu Ya that Ah Chi had long disappeared. So Wu Ya could do nothing but continue on his way.

Meanwhile Ah Chi had wandered to another part of the city. He was starving as usual on the streets until another kind hearted soul named Liao Miao Tszu (played by Ku Feng) took pity on him. Ah Chi was then taken in by Liao Miao Tszu to live with his mother. That evening Ah Chi had trouble sleeping. When he awoke he was surprised to see that Hsiao Li was standing in the back garden as he did not expect that any one would visit or look for him. Hsiao Li was able to quickly clear the confusion by stating that she was in fact Liao Miao Tszu’s sister.

Hsiao Li felt a little embarrassed and ashamed upon meeting Ah Chi because in this household and village she is label as a ‘Princess’ when in fact she worked as a ***** in a brothel. But to Ah Chi that meant nothing and he went on to state that not everyone was born into this world with a silver spoon in his hands. That it matter little whether a person was a king or a beggar as long as one was content, able to live life according to their own will, and was happy. To him Hsiao Li or Princess, it was all the same person, because at the end of day she’s just as pretty regardless. These words bought great comfort to Hsiao Li.

Ah Chi’s peaceful life at the little Miao village did not last for long. For wherever he went, trouble seemed to follow him. Firstly, Liao Miao Tszu was beaten up by a gang of thugs from Yang’s Clan for not paying his protection money. Later the Head of the Yang Clan sent a gang of men for Hsiao Li because he wanted her to entertain him and various guests at a feast with his sons, even despite the fact that she had quit working for the brothel months ago. But the head of the Yang Clan felt rich and powerful, working on the motto that he would have what he wanted regardless. When Hsiao Li refused to go with the men, a desperate fight breaks out. Ah Chi becomes outraged when Hsiao Li’s kind hearted mother is killed during the fight. He decides to lash out and kill the various men at will. Few are left alive to inform the head of the Yang Clan of what had happened.

When news of this incident breaks out the eldest son of the head of the Yang Clan immediately sets out for revenge with a bunch of his lackeys. Wu Ya was passing through the household when the incident occurred so he decides to track closely behind members of the Yang Clan. During the confrontation between the Yang Clan members and Ah Chi the eldest son is stunned as he recognises some of the sword stances used during the battle. Just when he was about to ask for Ah Chi’s real identity, Wu Ya, steps out and tells him to shut up because he knew and had revealed too much already. Wu Ya then undertakes to silence all of the Yang Clan members by killing them including the eldest son.

Ah Chi is then invited to the Mu Yung clan’s headquarters where Mu Yung Chiu Ti proposed to form an alliance and given herself to him in order to dominate the martial arts world. It is finally revealed that Ah Chi had been the Third Master all along. He had been tired of his fame and had grown weary of the various challengers that sought to duel with him. So he decided to fake his own death in an attempt to live a common life. Naturally he refused the offer of an alliance with the Mu Yung clan. This angered Mu Yung Chiu Ti into action. She attempted to lure and seduce the Third Master into a trap by taking off her clothes. But her plans were foiled. As the Third Master escapes from Mu Yung Chiu Ti’s grasp he shouts, “Next time you want to kill me, better stay dressed. You look ugly without clothes”.

Having failed to gain the Third Master’s support, Mu Yung Chu Ti immediately dispatches her deadly assassins to kill him. The first ones to try and fail were two assassins, one disguised as a chestnut seller and the other a beggar. The next to try were the Yu Mien Brothers who excelled in sword play. The Yu Mien Brothers had trouble finding Ah Chi in Luoyang so they decided pay a visit to the headquarters of the Yang Clan who had also hired a number of assassins to kill Ah Chi.

But the Yu Mien Brothers were never going to allow this to happen as they were proud of their abilities and wished to kill the Third Master themselves. So they went about a process of eliminating the hired hands. When the Yu Mien Brothers went to confront the head of the Yang Clan, the Third Master turned up as well to do the same thing. The Yu Mien Brothers then murdered every single Yang Clan member before requesting a duel with the Third Master. He obliged. Using a tree branch as a sword, the Third Master was able to slain both of the Yu Mien Brothers.

Following these incidents Ah Chi sought shelter a Mute’s house. Little did he know that Mute’s wife would collaborate with Tu Lang Chun (played by Yueh Hua) to set a trap to poison him. But Tu Lang Chun made a fatal error of judgement. That is providing the Third Master with 3 days to live rather than using a deadly poison that would kill him instantly. As a result the Third Master was able to kill Tu Lang Chun and all of his lackeys. Mute and his wife died in the process.

After being poisoned the Third Master would return to the Miao village to see Hsiao Li one last time before heading off to find an improbable cure. Prior to his departure Hsiao Li declared her love for the Third Master, stating that she would light up all of the lanterns from the lake to her house in anticipation of his return. With that pledge in mind the Third Master set out in an attempt to find the last remaining descendent of the great miracle doctor, Hua To, who was rumoured to be living by the lakeside.

Along his journey, the Third Master entered a tavern. There were a number of people inside the tavern including a scholar and a couple of renowned swordsman. Slightly dejected he orders a drink for everyone at the tavern. That arose suspicion from a number of the occupants and got them talking. The Third Master then advises all of the tavern’s occupants that he was dying and then in turn asked them how each of them would behave if they knew that they only had three days to live.

At first the scholar was reluctant to reveal his true feelings. When pressed he revealed that if he was to die shortly, he would go whoring and gamble to till his heart’s content. As he ran off into the distance he cried he couldn’t because he was a respected and educated man. The Third Master then turned his attention to the maid who had been given a stone chastity tablet by the village elders for staying pure for 10 years after her fiancé had died. Unable to restrain herself, the maid revealed that she would go and find the next available man and then sleep with them. She could no longer resist the urge to do so. As she said this she ran outside being chased around by her father. Seeing how the events had unfolded before his eyes, the Third Master summarised, “Man can do foolish things for fame's sake, even unto deceiving themselves”.

Shortly after, a gang surrounded a young lady outside the tavern and attempted to rape her. Despite being injured the Third Master attempted to intervene and save her. But he was too weak to fight had it not been for Hang Tang (played by Lo Lieh) and Fu Hung Hsueh (played by Ti Lung) who had been drinking at the tavern. Fu Hung Hsueh advises the Third Master that he knew of a person who lived down by the lake who could cure the deadly poison. He also remarked that it was a pity because that same person would die at the edge of the Third Master’s Sword upon curing him. But the Third Master did not believe him and journeyed down by the lake to find the mysterious person.

Instead of finding a doctor down by the lake, the Third Master stumbled across a fisherman. The fisherman advised the Third Master that the man who he came looking, Hua To’s distance relative, had died long ago. This immediately dampened the Third Master’s spirit so he sat on the small rowing boat with a dejected look on his face. The fisherman glances at the Third Master before asking whether he wanted to rest at the boat overnight. To that the Third Master replied that perhaps he would sit there for an eternity. Upon hearing the response the fisherman congratulated the Third Master stating that there were very few people in this world capable of spending the rest of their lives sitting at the boat for an eternity.

The Third Master then informs the fisherman that he only had 3 days remaining to live. The fisherman did not seem at all surprised as he has seen dead people and at the same time he has seen people die. He would go onto state that the Third Master would not die so easily however upon meeting him. This was because he had been presented with Hua To’s magical formula and wanted to test whether it worked or not. By doing so meant that he would also be able to attempt to cure the Third Master of the poison. The Third Master went to sleep shortly after being administered with the magical drug. This allowed the fisherman to operate on him.

When the Third Master recovered from his injuries three days had passed by. It was late in the evening and the fisherman was peacefully casting out a line on the bank of the river. The Third Master became very grateful that his poison and been cured and could not figure out why Fu Hung Hsueh had said that the fisherman would die under the edge of his blade upon curing him. Still puzzled he asked the fisherman on whether there was something he could do in return to repay the favour. The fisherman replied by stating that perhaps one year ago, he had many things he wanted to do, but that today there wasn’t anything that he wanted. He went on to state that he hated the name Yen Shih Shen. The Third Master mistook this to mean that he wanted revenge on Yen Shih Shen. But the fisherman was quick to clarify the matter by stating that he did not seek revenge on Yen Shih Shen that he only hated the name.

Many days later the Third Master returned to the Miao village hoping to reunite with Hsiao Li. Little did he know that during this time, Mu Yung Chiu Ti had sent her lackeys to kill her and blame Yen Shih Shen for the murder. At the same time, Mu Yung Chiu Ti visited Yen Shih Shen who was in fact the same fisherman who had saved the Third Master from the poison.

A year ago, Yen Shih Shen, had decided to retire from the martial arts world upon learning of the supposed sudden death of the Third Master. He even threw his sword away, but Mu Yung Chiu Ti managed to recover it. Upon hearing that the Third Master was still alive, Yen Shih Shen agreed to come out of retirement and confront him for one last duel at the Maple Forest on the outskirts of Luoyang. Thus a trap had been set to ensure a final showdown between the Third Master and Yen Shih Shen.

When the Third Master discovered that Hsiao Li had been murdered he swore to kill Yen Shih Shen and dispatched his men all over China in search of him. After holding a funeral for Hsiao Li at the Supreme Sword Mansion, the Third Master personally went out in pursuit of Yen Shih Shen.

Days before the expected duel Wu Ya uncovered and advised Mu Yung Chiu Ti that it had in fact been Yen Shih Shen who had saved the life of the Third Master down by the lake. Realising that a life and death duel between the two supreme sword masters were unlikely, given that the Third Master owed Yen Shih Shen a great favour, Mu Yung Chiu Ti decided to resort to some rather rash tactics. She decided that she would unleash her younger brother Mu Yung Chien Lung (played by David Chiang) to defeat the two men. Mu Yung Chien Lung was a highly skilled fighter. But the problem was that he had gone mad whilst practising martial arts.

On the day of the duel the Third Master had brought many swords with him in preparation for the duel. As usual Yen Shih Shen used the only sword that he trusted. As a result of the misunderstanding the Third Master was outraged upon seeing Yen Shih Shen and immediately fought with him. It was difficult to distinguish each other through the fog. However, when the fog cleared both men were shocked upon recognising each other. They immediately stopped fighting. This provided the two men with an opportunity to clear the confusion. As they did so Mu Yung Chiu Ti, Wu Ya, along with Mu Yung Chien Lung arrived.

Mu Yung Chiu Ti immediately confessed to the murder of Hsiao Li to force the Third Master out of retirement and staging the fight between the two fighters in the hope of eliminating one of them. Shortly after Mu Yung Chien Lung was unleashed to fight the two men. He would defeat both of them with surprising ease. Just when it appeared as if Mu Yung Chiu Ti would succeed in dominating the martial arts world, Mu Yung Chien Lung lost his self control and went wild. He went on an unstoppable killing spree, killing his own sister Mu Yung Chiu Ti, Tieh Hu, and the rest of the lackeys before sprinting off. The sight of the dead bodies and the great lengths in which Mu Yung Chiu Ti went to in order to claim dominance of the martial arts world caught both men speechless.

Although the Third Master was content to leave this scene and resume a normal life as the head of the Supreme Sword Mansion, Yen Shih Shen was not. For the sake of his own name and reputation ‘Yen Shih Sen’ he was determined to fight to the death with the Third Master to see who was the best. At first the Third Master was reluctant to fight as he did not wish to kill his saviour. He was lost as to the reason they must fight. Yen Shih Shen then explained that it was the way of the world and that there wasn’t enough room for two elite fighters. Someone had to be number one. Yen Shih Shen also reminded the Third Master that he owed a favour and therefore must accept the duel. He also remarked that he would not die contently unless he knew who the better swordsman was. Finally the Third Master took up the challenge.

The two men fought through several heated rounds. The Third Master was also forced to change his sword on several occasions. During the battle Yen Shih Shen’s sword also broke but he had a spare blade at the hilt. Besides he wasn’t ever going to allow a broken blade to stop him. After a few more exchanges the Third Master’s last sword also broke. Yen Shih Shan’s sword was pointed towards the adams apple pressure point of the Third Master and seemed to have gained victory. Starring directly at Yen Shih Shan, the Third Master said goodbye for ever before disappearing from the Maple Forest. Yen Shih Shen was left standing alone whilst clasping the chest region near the heart. As he looked towards the ground he noticed that the tip of the Third Master’s sword had been sliced off. But the broken blade had already penetrated his heart.

“The Third Master’s sword is indeed the invincible one”, he remarked before dropping to the ground.

    Review

”Death Duel” or literally translated into English as “The Third Master’s Invincible Sword” is an all-time classic wuxia film directed by Chu Yuan adapted from Ku Lung’s famous novel. Unlike most wuxia films made during the 90s this film has very serious and philosophical undertones in it. It’s more of a thinking man’s film and there are lots of lessons to be learnt. The plot and storyline is very complex and detailed and things can get a little confusing at times. It is not a blood thirsty sword wielding film as one would expect from such a title. But the story is beautifully told by Chu Yuan. The underlying theme throughout most of Ku Lung’s work is that people are not their own masters. For one reason or another people are forced to do things against their will. This film is the first to convey the theme so magnificently.

It’s a pity that I have not read Ku Lung’s original work and thus cannot comment on whether this adaptation is true to the novel. But by all accounts and reviews I have read that touch on this subject seems to indicate to me that, unlike most movies made today, Chu Yuan was able to be true to Ku Lung’s original work at least 65% of the time. I also liked the fact that Chu Yuan retained most of the Ku Lung type of dialog in this film. I think the Ku Lung type dialog are the work of a genius, though most people would probably prefer if the characters spoke directly, rather sideways and upside down. My favourite line in this movie is when that character of Yen Shih Shen states, “A man who boils the tea doesn’t necessarily have to drink it”. The opening scene dialog are another of my all time favourites, especially when the Yu Mien Brothers appear and state that they came to kill Yeh Shih Shen, but not today.

Even though this film was made during the late 1970s there are so many things to be impressed about, that even films made in the wuxia genre today can’t compare with. The great storyline and plot is one of them. It also contains some of the greatest acting performances from the likes of Derek Yee, Lin Yun, and Yu An An. Each actor/actress excelled in their roles. I particularly liked and think that Lin Yun was superb as Yen Shih Shen. The costumes, set design, and theme music were excellent for the period in which they were made. I really liked the use of the red Autumn type leaves in most of the scenes.

The fighting may be outdated by today’s standards, but one has to remember this film was made during the late 70s. The fighting along with the fact that it was filmed on studio sets are the few limitations to this film. Another limitation of this film, although no one’s fault as the studios operated in such a way during the 70s, is the use of virtually the same actors and actresses in a series of films doing similar type of character roles. I mean Derek Yee and Yu An An appeared in more then their fair share of Ku Lung adaptations made by Chu Yuan. It is sometimes distracting for the audience of today to full grasp this unusual concept of theatre methodology of movie making.

The above limitations are made by Chu Yuan’s directing. His interpretation of the story is first class. It’s the way wuxia stories should and are meant to be told. Most directors doing wuxia films seem to focus on the idiotic and funny aspects, so it was refreshing for me to see a classic novel being treated with respect.

“Death Duel” is a must recommend for all wuxia fans out there who are tired of seeing today’s crappy attempts to make a classic wuxia film that bears no resemblance to the work of original authors. “Seven Swords” come into mind most recently.

If you like Gu Long's novels, Shaw Brothers released a number of masterpieces, here are some reccomendation :

    1. The Sentimental Swordsman

Starring Ti Lung, One of Chu Yuan's (the Director) best Wuxia movie, and best of all Ti Lung did a marvellous job as Li Xun Huan (aka The Flying Dagger) complete with the cough lol ..... the movie really captured the spirit of the novel, Dou Qing Jian Ke Wu Qing Jian, better known as Xiao Li Fei Dao (or Little Li's Flying Dagger). The movie won a best cinematography award in 1979 and it shows. It covers the first part of the novel, here's my complete review of it

    http://wuxiamania.phorumz.com/wuxiamania-about78.html

    2. The Return of the Sentimental Swordsman

Ti Lung is back as the legendary Li XunHuan. The movie is about the second part of the novel and once again, Chu Yuan did really well to capture the essence of the novel. Alex Fu Sheng starred as Jin Wu Ming

    3. The Proud Twins

Alex Fu Sheng as Xiao Yu Er. It has been said that this is the best wuxia movie adaptation of Gu Long's The Legendary Twins novel or JueDai ShuangJiao. Alex Fu Sheng completely immersed himself as the loveable, funny, smart and comical 'The Little Fish.' The late Fu Sheng is said to be the best Xiao Yu Er ever. I couldn't have agreed more. The novel at times took the words from the novel word by word, and tried to stay loyal to the novel, whenever it could, considering the 1 hour 40 minutes limitation of the movie

    4. Killer Clans

Based on Gu Long's Meteor, Butterfly, Swords. (The translation is available in this forum) Another masterpiece by Chu Yuan. The movie completely captured the twists and turns of the novel and has been praised over and over again by my Shawbrother fans including many Western audiences for having some of the best fighting scenes ever.

I recommend the Lau Kar-leung made/choregraphed productions. They usually have the more exciting fighting and direction.

    Summary

In the middle of the night two swordsmen, one in white and the other in black robes, stand facing each other at a bridge. The swordsman in black enquires about the identity of the other swordsman. The white swordsman reveals that he is Li, the man who rocked 9 states and had killed numerous other swordsmen. He asks for the identity of the swordsman in black in return. That particular swordsman was named Meng Sheng Hun (played by Tsung Hua) a deadly assassin with unrivalled skills. He advises Li that the reason for their meeting was to kill him. Li is immediately shocked, sheathing his sword to defend himself. But he is no match for Meng Sheng Hun and is instantly slained.

Assassins were like shooting stars. They shine at the height of their powers when they appear but they don’t last for long.

Meanwhile a young prostitute is entertaining one of her clients at a brothel. That prostitute’s name is Sister Kao (played by Chen Ping). The brothel is also a place for soliciting the help of deadly assassins. The customer leaves Sister Kao with a note on the table with the name of the intended target written on it. Upon reading the note Sister Kao knows exactly who this task should be appointed to. It would be none other than Meng Sheng Hun.

Upon hearing of his next assignment Meng Sheng Hun protests because he has been overworked. But there was no one else Sister Kao could trust as the other assassin named Yeh Hsiang (played by Ling Yun) had become a drunk. Reluctantly Meng Sheng Hun accepts the assignment. He is to assassinate Uncle Sun Yu (played by Ku Feng), the head of the Lung Men Society, one of the most powerful clans in the martial arts underworld. Uncle Sun Yu is protected by many highly skilled fighters including his son, Sun Chien, who is a dauntless swordsman with exceptional skills. He smashed an entire gang overnight without a worthy opponent. Then there’s Uncle Sun Yu’s grandson, Lu Hsiang Chuan (played by Yueh Hua), his right hand man who excels in martial arts and is an expert of 72 hidden weapons. Finally there’s a mysterious and yet cold blooded assassin named Han Tang (played by Lo Lieh) who lives at a secret address and rarely appears in public. But it was said that he could assassinate anyone. Sister Kao decides to send Meng Sheng Hun to Uncle Sun Yu’s 50th birthday so he could plan his assassination attempt.

Trouble brews on Uncle Sun Yu’s 50th birthday. Starting with a group of men accusing Sun Chien’s friend, Hsiao Tieh of murdering his master’s entire family. Sun Chien would step in to resolve the problem. But Hsiao Tieh’s pursuers would request to speak with Sun Chien’s father as they believe that he would not speak to them so rudely. Nonsense cried Uncle Sun Yu as he stepped out to greet his various guests. He also advised the three men that manners were hereditary and that a father may therefore be even ruder than his son. Upon seeing Uncle Sun Yu, Hsiao Tieh produced evidence that he did not kill his master’s family. The three men immediately try to kill Uncle Sun Yu. Sun Chien and Lu Hsiang Chuan immediately intervene to protect Uncle Sun Yu. They are joined by Han Tang who beheads one man with his hat before killing the two other men. He rubs his face with the blood of his victims before making a bold declaration, that anyone who wishes to kill Sun Yu must first kill him. Meng Sheng Wen watches on with curiosity. He realises it isn’t going to be an easy task to kill Uncle Sun Yu.

Many days later an elder advises Uncle Sun Yu of a gang of thugs who has been committing a number of crimes including murder and rape. Uncle Sun Yu arbitrates over the matter and decides to send his son, Sun Chien to eliminate the gang. He succeeds. Later another elder complains of a gang of men known as the Three Tigers who had raped his daughter. The Three Tigers belonged to a an equally powerful clan known as the Roc Society. Once again Uncle Sun Yu decides to arbitrate over the matter, knowing that he had spies working for him within every clan. But this time he decides to send his right hand man, Lu Hsiang Chuan, to resolve the matter. Before allowing Lu Hsiang Chuan to depart, Uncle Sun Yu, asked how he would go about resolving the matter. To that Lu Hsiang Chuan replied that whoever Uncle Sun Yu wanted dead should die, because people who deserved to be killed should be killed. With that Lu Hsiang Chuan left for his journey.

Lu Hsiang Chuan met with the Chief of the Roc Society at an antique shop and was invited to their headquarters. Upon hearing of Lu Hsiang Chuan mission the Chief of the Roc Society decided to offer two rare and priceless antiques in exchange for the lives of the Three Tigers. Naturally Lu Hsiang Chuan refused to accept the offer. Enraged the Chief of the Roc Society ordered his men to surrounded Lu Hsiang Chuan with men armed with arrows. But this meant very little as Nan Kung Yuan, a servant of the Chief of the Roc Society was a spy for Uncle Sun Yu. He immediately seized the Chief of the Roc Society as a hostage. This enabled Lu Hsiang Chuan to battle with and kill the Three Tigers. Once Lu Hsiang Chuan fled, Nan Kung Yuan killed himself stating that those who worked for Uncle Sun Yu are selfless and cared about honour more than their lives.

Meanwhile, Meng Sheng Hun wandered into the Butterfly Forest by accident. Whilst he was there he heard a girl reciting a poem about the season of Spring. It was a metaphor for love. This girl was known as Sun Hsiao Tieh aka Butterfly (played by Ching Li). Meng Sheng Hun stated that it was an excellent poem. When asked whether he knew the meaning behind the poem he replied he did not but liked it never the less. During this time Meng Sheng Hun had also managed to catch a butterfly and wanted to give it to the young girl. Although she liked butterflies she refused to take it. So Men Sheng Hun decided to keep it as a token that would remind him that he had visited such a beautiful place. Butterfly initially rejected Men Sheng Hun’s attempts to befriend her, stating that many had died where he stood. But when Men Sheng Hun stated that he was not afraid of death she became more relaxed. She suggested that Meng Sheng Hun should leave by providing him with directions.

Upon returning to the brothel, Meng Sheng Hun decided to use the butterfly he caught as a bookmark. His friend and fellow assassin, Yeh Hsiang saw the butterfly and commented that it looked beautiful. Shocked Meng Sheng Hun asked whether Yeh Hsiang had been to the Butterfly Valley before. To that Yeh Hsiang gave a side glance before replying “no”. Noticing how quickly Yeh Hsiang was drinking, Meng Sheng Hun became concerned and advised his friend not to drink so much. But Yeh Hsiang refused to heed his advice stating that an assassin who has failed once will never have the courage or ever be the same again. He wasn’t ever going to hold a sword again, so it mattered little when he drank too much.

Meng Sheng Hun became curious as to how Yeh Hsiang became a drunkard. He thought it was because of a true love. To that Yeh Hsiang replied no, that it was because he loved a girl. Because of this Hang Tan was sent to kill him. Changing the subject, Yeh Hsiang stated that he and Meng Sheng Hun were both orphans before becoming assassins and that they were like brothers. He advised Meng Sheng Hun that name, friends, family, and love were not for people in their line of profession, because with those things they cannot keep calm and succeed. But he also stated that those who fail and get what those who succeed couldn’t.

But before Meng Sheng Hun could ponder over words of wisdom he was summoned to see Sister Kao. Meng Sheng Hun informed Sister Kao that it was not going to be easy to kill Uncle Sun Yu. Sister Ko acknowledged this fact and agreed to given Meng Sheng Hun more time to think of a successful plan. But she warned Meng Sheng Hun must kill Uncle Sun Yu before the other factions do. Meng Sheng Hun did not seem to understand, so Sister Ko advised him that a war between the Roc Society and the Lung Men Society had started because of Lu Hsiang Chuan’s actions of killing the Three Tigers.

Meanwhile as an act of revenge the Roc Society murdered the elder who advised Uncle Sun Yu of the Three Tiger’s actions and his daughter. Their graves were delivered to the Lung Men Society headquarters. Uncle Sun Yu countered by sending his son Sun Chien to preside over the funeral whilst setting an ambush to murder men from the Roc Society. This was based on a plan devised by Lu Hsiang Chuan. His plan succeeded, but because of the act of some traitors, both Sun Chien and Hsiao Tieh were murdered on the day. Uncle Sun Yu was clearly in shock upon hearing of his son’s murder and that there were spies from the Roc Society within his own Lung Men Society.

A little shaken by the recent events Uncle Sun Yu decides to send out two messages calling for the assistance of his two closest friends, Hsien-Lung and Lu Man Tien. He also attempts to send a message calling for the aide of Han Tang. But Hang Tang’s secret address is somehow disclosed to the Roc Society. He is ambushed and is murdered by a stab in the back from a friend who collaborated with the Chief of the Roc Society. Following the death of Hang Tang, Uncle Sun Yu begins to suspect that his right hand man, Lu Hsiang Chuan, has betrayed him.

He informs this to his friend Lu Man Tien who is shocked. Lu Man Tien immediately asks Uncle Sun Yu why no action had been taken against Lu Hsiang Chuan. To that Uncle Sun Yu replied by stating that Lu Hsiang Chuan is his grandson and also Lu Man Tien’s nephew, and that he liked him. Therefore he decided to test Lu Hsiang Chuan’s loyalty by sending him on a mission to Hangchow were numerous members of the Roc Society had set up camp. Uncle Sun Yu advises Lu Hsiang Chuan that Hang Tan had betrayed them and the he should go and kill him. If Lu Hsiang Chuan was a traitor he would know that Hang Tan had died and would not fight against men from the Roc Society. Lu Man Tien agreed that this was a good plan.

In a tavern at Hangchow, Lu Hsiang Chuan, was shocked to find that members of the Roc Society had already killed Han Tang. They immediately engaged in a heated battle and Lu Hsiang Chuan kills many of the Roc Society members before eventually being caught. Members of the Roc Society then advise Lu Hsiang Chuan that he had been sold out by the Lung Men Society because Uncle Sun Yu suspects that he had killed Hang Tan. But Lu Hsiang Chuan appeared none the wiser. Just when Lu Hsiang Chuan was about to be slained, both Uncle Sun Yu and Lu Man Tien appeared from secret compartments to save him. Once everything had settled, Uncle Sun Yu confirmed that he had originally suspected Lu Hsiang Chuan as the man who was responsible for the matter. But he went on to state that he was now clear and trusted Lu Hsiang Chuan once more. He knew the real traitor would emerge sooner or later.

Following the incident at Hangchow, Uncle Sun Yu decided to recruitment men for the impending war against the Roc Society. Sister Kao felt that it was an opportune time to send Meng Sheng Hun to infiltrate the Lung Men Society. Their he would link up with her inside man and assassinate Uncle Sun Yu. She had also arrange for a new identity for Men Sheng Hun. He was to be known as Ching Chung Tin of the Ching Clan.

Before Meng Sheng Hun set off he decided to pay a visit to the Butterfly Valley. It was exactly a year since he visited and it was Spring again. When asked what he was doing by Butterfly, Meng Sheng Hun simply replied that he had come to catch butterflies. It was then that Butterfly mention that she once had an assassin friend, but because of this relationship her father had the assassin murdered. It was because of this that she had a quarrel with her father and lodged at the Butterfly Valley. Meng Sheng Hun asked for her real identity, but she would reveal no more. Before Meng Sheng Hun left Butterfly advised him that Spring was particularly long at the Butterfly Valley and that he could return to catch butterflies upon accomplishing his mission. To that Meng Sheng Hun replied, that Butterfly should not wait until Spring is over before journeying on his way.

As expected Meng Sheng Hun was recruited by Uncle Sun Yu because he displayed exceptional skills and talent whilst fighting against Lu Hsiang Chuan during the interview. Later that evening Meng Sheng Hun uncovered that the man who wanted Uncle Sun Yu dead was none other than Lu Man Tien. Based on his plan, Meng Sheng Hun was to use a secret tunnel leading to Uncle Sun Yu’s garden and assassinate him when he is usually taking his nap at 5.00pm. This was the only moment, according to Lu Man Tien that Uncle Sun Yu decides to take off his iron vest and no one is allowed in the garden during this time. So in essence it was said that Meng Sheng Hun had at least 70% chance of success.

Meanwhile, Sister Kao discovers that Meng Sheng Hun had been through the Butterfly Valley on the way to the Lung Men Society. She becomes flustered as she believes that Meng Sheng Hun will not be able to accomplish his mission so she decides to urge the drunkard, Yeh Hsiang to undertake the mission. It is uncovered that Yeh Hsiang and Butterfly were once in love with each other. But Uncle Sun Yu could not tolerate their relationship so had sent Hang Tan to kill Yeh Hsiang. Hang Tan and Yeh Hsiang fought with each other for three days and three nights. Although Hang Tan finally managed to win he decided to spare Yeh Hsiang. Yeh Hsiang had been a drunkard ever since that day. Realising that his good friend, Meng Sheng Hun, could not and should not kill Uncle Sun Yu because of his love for Butterfly, Yeh Hsiang agrees to the mission. He wanted to kill Uncle Sun Yu so that Meng Sheng Hun didn’t have to.

That evening Meng Sheng Hun followed the instructions given to him by Lu Man Tien and attempted to assassinate Uncle Sun Yu. To his surprise Uncle Sun Yu wasn’t sleeping in his bed like he was supposed to be but was instead watering the flowers. Although he was caught red handed, Meng Sheng Hun remained calm. Uncle Sun Yu did not seem to want to take his life, so he was curious as to why. Just at this moment a bell starts ringing. This bell is normally used to herald the arrival of a doctor. But Uncle Sun Yu noticed from the way that the bell was ringing that it actually heralded the arrival of an assassin. Sure enough, upon arriving at the main hall to greet his guests, Yeh Hsiang had arrived dressed as a doctor. Meng Sheng Hun watched on with disbelief, not quite knowing what to make of the situation.

Almost immediately Yeh Hsiang attempted to kill Uncle Sun Yu. But he was prevented form doing so by Lu Hsiang Chuan. Realising he wasn’t going to succeed Yeh Hsiang spent a lot of time telling Meng Sheng Hun about Butterfly, giving him hints that love was the only thing worth fighting for before committing suicide. Following the death of Yeh Hsiang, Uncle Sun Yu questioned Meng Sheng Hun., asking why he didn’t mourn. To that Meng Sheng Hun replied, why should he morn. Uncle Sun Yu then revealed that he had known that Meng Sheng Hun was an assassin sent to murder him before he had even arrived at the Lung Men Society. This was news to Meng Sheng Hun and he was greatly shocked that Uncle Sun Yu had not taken any action against him. Uncle Sun Yu then revealed that he wished to learn who the mastermind was, and also it was for the sake of Butterfly that he did decided not to kill Meng Sheng Hun.

A valiant swordsman like Meng Sheng Hun was never going to reveal to Uncle Sun Yu the identity of the mastermind. But Uncle Sun Yu stated that it was not necessary as he would be able to find out within seconds. Sure enough just as he said this, news arrived that Lu Man Tien had committed suicide. Upon examining Lu Man Tien’s body, Uncle Sun Yu was still not convinced that he was the main culprit. Because Lu Man Tien had been poisoned, otherwise he could have run away. With that in mind, Uncle Sun Yu worked on a master plan to drive the real mastermind out of hiding. He unexpectedly announced a raid on the Roc Society headquarters the next day before providing Meng Sheng Hun with two sealed orders. Meng Sheng Hun was to go to the Butterfly Valley and retrieve the hidden army for the proposed attack. With that Meng Sheng Hun went on his way. He was accompanied by four swordsmen whom Lu Hsiang Chuan had sent to keep an eye out for him.

That evening Uncle Sun Yu presented Lu Hsiang Chuan with the golden insignia that normally belongs to the Chief of the Lung Men Society before showing him all of the clan’s secrets. It was obvious that Uncle Sun Yu had wished Lu Hsiang Chuan to succeed him and had made prior arrangements before the battle with the Roc Society in case something happened. Lu Hsiang Chuan attended to Uncle Sun Yu that night. Just when Uncle Sun Yu had taken off his iron vest to rest he was ambushed behind his back by Lu Hsiang Chuan. He was struck several times by Lu Hsiang Chuan’s 7-Star needles that was said to have no cure.

As Uncle Sun Yu had previously suspected, Lu Hsiang Chuan had been the traitor all along. He had collaborated with the Roc Society, and had murdered both Sun Chien and Hang Tan. Laughing in triumph, Lu Hsiang Chuan, remarked that Uncle Sun Yu had made two mistakes in life. The first was to suspect him and then trust him again. The second was to know that he had been the traitor all along and not to believe it was true. Uncle Sun Yu asked whether Lu Hsiang Chuan was through with telling his story, before revealing one final secret. That he had done all of this to test Lu Hsiang Chuan’s loyalty. With that Uncle Sun Yu pulled trigger that revealed a secret compartment to his bed before disappearing from sight.

Lu Hsiang Chuan was caught off guard, but managed to uncover the secret compartment. He would pursue after Uncle Sun Yu who was now on a raft being assisted by an unknown man along a small river. But as he gave chase the man assisting Uncle Sun Yu pulled a rope and rocks came crashing down. This angered Lu Hsiang Chuan who gave orders to a number of his men to remove the rocks so that he could continue his pursuit. He also dispatched a number of men to deal with Meng Sheng Hun.

Meanwhile, Meng Sheng Hun arrived at the Butterfly Valley. On advice of Butterfly he decided to open the first order. He was shocked upon reading it. At once he killed the four men who had accompanied him before leading Butterfly and her servant away to safety. They arrived at an abandoned temple where they were contacted by Hsien Lung who had stationed a number of men to meet them. At first Meng Sheng Hun did not trust Hsien Lung as it was rumoured that he had betrayed Uncle Sun Yu many months ago. Hsien Lung then sought to clear the confusion by stating that it had been Uncle Sun Yu’s plans all along to lure the mastermind out of hiding. Uncle Sun Yu had left instructions for Hsien Lung to wait for his return. So the men did as they were told.

At this moment Uncle Sun with the help of his assistant arrived at a house where Ma Fung Chung and his wife had lived with two children. Apparently Uncle Sun Yu had once saved Ma Fung Chung’s life and he had agreed to build and stock a well with food and supplies for an occasion such as this one. Ma Fung Chung was immediately lowered to the well, but he was spotted by the two children. To ensure that no one saw Uncle Sun Yu being lowered into the well, Ma Fung Chung and his wife agreed to poison their children before committing suicide. The other man who had rescued Uncle Sun Yu continued on his way with an empty cart hoping to distract Lu Hsiang Chuan so that he did not expect that Uncle Sun Yu had been lowered down to the well. This plan worked like magic and Lu Hsiang Chuan was unable to kill Uncle Sun Yu. Thinking that he had succeeded Lu Hsiang Chuan took up the post as Chief of the Lu Meng Society. He had also murdered Sister Kao who had been collaborating with him all this time as well.

Once Uncle Sun Yu recovered from his injuries he captured the Chief of the Roc Society and stormed the Lung Men Society with the aide of men like Meng Sheng Hun and Hsien Lung. Lu Hsiang Chuan had of course expected that this day would come when he failed to recover the body of Uncle Sun Yu. So he was well prepared for such and unexpected attack. But little did he know that Uncle Sun Yu was already one step ahead of him. All of Lu Hsiang Chuan’s men hiding in ambush had already been murdered. Lu Hsiang Chuan suddenly became surrounded. He fought on bravely with Meng Sheng Hun in an attempt to escape. But he and Meng Sheng Hun were of equal ability and as such he was not able to escape. During the battle Meng Sheng Hun received a blow to the chest whilst Lu Hsiang Chuan received a stab in the right arm. He was also taken by surprised and struck from behind by Uncle Sun Yu. This caused him to bleed internally. Just when Uncle Sun Yu thought he had his man, Lu Hsiang Chuan escaped through a secret compartment underneath his table. Like master, like apprentice. Uncle Sun Yu could not help but praise Lu Hsiang Chuan for his genius.

But Lu Hsiang Chuan did not manage to get far. He had made prior arrangements with his long time friend named Hsia Ching for an occasion such as this one. Hsia Ching had agreed to safe keep a sum of money and prepared for a horse for his escape. Lu Hsiang Chuan went to thank him for being a true friend, and went on to remark that everyone needed a friend so when they fail they wouldn’t feel so miserable and lonely. But little could he have guessed that his long-time friend would betray him and poison his wine. Just at this moment Uncle Sun Yu burst through the door along with the rest of the people. Uncle Sun Yu then stated that a man like Lu Hsiang Chuan should not expect to have friends because someone who betrays his master his certain to be betrayed in return. Lu Hsiang Chuan then glances at Hsia Ching in total disbelief whilst remarking that he also drank the same wine. Lifting the wine cup for Lu Hsiang Chuan to see, Hsia Ching replied, but its not from the same cup. Coughing up a mouthful of blood Lu Hsiang Chuan died in bewilderment. His plans to overthrow Uncle Sun Yu had failed miserably.

When things had settled down a servant ran in to advise Uncle Sun Yu that Butterfly had arrived. Uncle Sun Yu then turned to Meng Sheng Hun and requested that he take Butterfly to somewhere safe. When asked for the reason, Uncle Sun Yu explained that Meng Sheng Hun might attempt to kill Uncle Sun Yu one day if he remained at the Lung Meng Society as conflicts and disputes for power were inevitable in the martial arts world. With that in mind, Meng Sheng Hun mounted his horse to escort Butterfly away with him. Just as he was about to leave he tossed his sword towards Uncle Sun Yu. As he caught the sword, Uncle Sun Yu became curious. Knowing what was on Uncle Sun Yu’s mind, Meng Sheng Hun stated where there are swords there are conflicts before riding off into the wilderness with Butterfly.

    Review

”Killer Clans” or a more literal translation of the title “Meteor, Butterfly, Sword” is another classic wuxia film featuring the combo of novelist Ku Lung and the direction of Chu Yuan. I would rate this movie as the best wuxia film I have ever seen. The story has one of the most intriguing plots with many twists and turns. Characters are not what they appear to be and loyalties are test on more than one occasion. The amount of strategies used in the struggle for power conveyed in this film is extraordinary. Once again this film isn’t all about action, gore, and swordsmen chopping each other into bits. Nor is it packed with stunning fight scenes. This movie concentrates more on the human and philosophical elements of what life is like for a warrior in ancient China. It also has a slightly romantic and supreme ideological feel about it. As such it is more of a thinking man’s movie and we can appreciate the various lessons to be learnt from watching such a movie.

The only part of the film I found amusing (well I found it amusing) is that in order to repay a debt someone would be willing to wait down a well for 15 long and lonely years and then drive an empty cart off the edge of a cliff, thereby killing himself. I thought that act was rather extreme, and I amused myself, thinking what would happen to poor Uncle Sun Yu if that fellow had decided not to wait for him all this time…

That aside the film was very artistic. The cinematography, costumes and weapons used in this film were absolutely stunning. It is amazing how many hidden weapons are contained within one weapon, and how weapons can quickly be constructed to form a more larger weapon. The sets, though being indoor, were very detailed and carefully constructed. I particularly liked the house at the Butterfly Valley. The colour and decorations were very bright, and the red leaves created a stunning visual effect.

In terms of acting, Ku Feng’s performance as Uncle Sun Yu was absolutely stunning. He put on an authoritative and commanding performance that captured the attention of the audience and outshined leads like Tsung Hua and Chang Li. This is very rare given that Ku Feng normally plays the bad guys in movies. This film showcases the breadth and depth of his acting abilities. Having said that I also liked Tsung Hua’s performance as Meng Sheng Hun. He was cool and handsome. Something you want from a leading man. Ching Li suited the role of Butterfly. But the character I enjoyed the most in this movie was Hang Tan played by Lo Lieh. This is one of my favourite characters from Ku Lung’s novel. I really liked the fact that he rubs his face with his opponents blood and wields a strange weapon below the brim of his hat. It takes a great novelist to invent such a colourful character. In fact the great characters along with the excellent acting is a real feature of this film.

The fighting is what you’d expect from a film of this age. It was made during the late 1970s where special effects, CGIs, and high wire antics had yet to be perfected. But the hand to hand combats, and combats with weapons, all taking place at ground level, somehow actually gave those fight scenes a more realistic type feel about it.

Fans may recall that there are other adaptations of this film, more notably “Butterfly and Sword” in 1993 starring Tony Leung, Michelle Yeoh, Donnie Yen, and Joey Wong, and “Killer Meteors” featuring Jackie Chang. I am of the view however that “Killer Clans” is still the best adaptation by far, and probably won’t be exceeded unless Directors out there begin to focus on telling the story the way its meant to be told, rather than rely on high wire, idiotic humour, and CGI effects.

Once again a must see for all wuxia fans. This is indeed a rare wuxia masterpiece.

The Proud Twins is a really good movie but the beginning does seem a little rushed. In fact, I wrote a review on the movie and it is up now.
