On Jin Yong's Main characters
What started me into Wuxia was LOCH 83. I watched it the first time it came out on videotapes, dubbed into English, fortunately it retained the same characters' name, albeit in Hokkienese (Guo Jing - Kwee Cheng, Huang Rong - Oey Yong), so yes, you can say that Guo Jing was my first Jin Yong idol. Then I continued with ROCH 84, HSDS 79, HSDS 86, Book & Sword 76 (or 79). All dubbed into English or with English subtitles, since my Chinese (Mandarin) was very poor when I was growing up.
Never really liked Yang Guo, didn't know why either, somehow I never had a good feeling about him. I did like Zhang Wuji more than Yang Guo. And the worst part was DGSD 82. Not just it was dubbed into English, but all the characters' names were changed into English names as well. If I am not mistaken Xiao Feng was called Kevin, Mu WanQing as Miss Wood, Duan Yu as Dyyan or something like that. This annoying change kept me from watching DGSD 82 entirely.
Then many years later, I got around the actual novels (first edition) and reread HSDS first, followed by LOCH, then ROCH. It was difficult since back then you had to rent these books from Chinese Wuxia Book Rental places, and most of them were always out or came back with some pages torn off. Not to mention, my parents always banned me from reading these Wuxia stuff since it could get very addicted and could affect my grade, while I was in school.
There are a lot fake JY novels too, there are a number of novels about YG/XLN's descendents and ZWJ/ZM's children and grandchildren, and novels about pre-LOCH. But most of these fake novels, although retained Jin Yong name to market its product, only revolves around the trilogy, since they were the most popular.
And now, many many years later, I have re-watched some of those old 80's series, and reread the novels many times, particularly LOCH, ROCH, HSDS. I didn't really know that DGSD and XAJH was also written by JY until probably about 8-10 years ago, and never really cared much since I hated Chow Yun Fat's horrible XAJH adaptation and hard-to-swallow, English whacked DGSD 83. When I found out that they were Jin Yong's creation as well. I immediately read the novels.
I have made a progression, I don't really like Guo Jing as much, although IMHO, LOCH is still one of the best novels that JY wrote, I like WXB and XF better than GJ now.
My progression is such that I have moved from loving Guo Jing and didn't particularly hate Yang Guo, into loving WXB and XF most and completely hating YG now.
So please, share us your story about your love progression of JY main characters![]()

), hsds79 became an important talking point among friends. i remember disliking zwj for leaving zzr at the altar
. the reason is simple - being bought up in a traditional family, the virtues of promise is very well grained in me. i also remembered very clearly that one elder sister of mine cried for this incident. however, the show progressed well as all efforts were zoomed on zm - depicted to be the kindest and nicest zm in all series. all was well until the show ended in an anti-climax, with zm jumping off the cliff. i cried in fact. i can't sleep for the whole night. the only time i ever cried for a series.
