Default Your love progression of JY Main Characters

    On Jin Yong's Main characters

What started me into Wuxia was LOCH 83. I watched it the first time it came out on videotapes, dubbed into English, fortunately it retained the same characters' name, albeit in Hokkienese (Guo Jing - Kwee Cheng, Huang Rong - Oey Yong), so yes, you can say that Guo Jing was my first Jin Yong idol. Then I continued with ROCH 84, HSDS 79, HSDS 86, Book & Sword 76 (or 79). All dubbed into English or with English subtitles, since my Chinese (Mandarin) was very poor when I was growing up.

Never really liked Yang Guo, didn't know why either, somehow I never had a good feeling about him. I did like Zhang Wuji more than Yang Guo. And the worst part was DGSD 82. Not just it was dubbed into English, but all the characters' names were changed into English names as well. If I am not mistaken Xiao Feng was called Kevin, Mu WanQing as Miss Wood, Duan Yu as Dyyan or something like that. This annoying change kept me from watching DGSD 82 entirely.

Then many years later, I got around the actual novels (first edition) and reread HSDS first, followed by LOCH, then ROCH. It was difficult since back then you had to rent these books from Chinese Wuxia Book Rental places, and most of them were always out or came back with some pages torn off. Not to mention, my parents always banned me from reading these Wuxia stuff since it could get very addicted and could affect my grade, while I was in school.

There are a lot fake JY novels too, there are a number of novels about YG/XLN's descendents and ZWJ/ZM's children and grandchildren, and novels about pre-LOCH. But most of these fake novels, although retained Jin Yong name to market its product, only revolves around the trilogy, since they were the most popular.

And now, many many years later, I have re-watched some of those old 80's series, and reread the novels many times, particularly LOCH, ROCH, HSDS. I didn't really know that DGSD and XAJH was also written by JY until probably about 8-10 years ago, and never really cared much since I hated Chow Yun Fat's horrible XAJH adaptation and hard-to-swallow, English whacked DGSD 83. When I found out that they were Jin Yong's creation as well. I immediately read the novels.

I have made a progression, I don't really like Guo Jing as much, although IMHO, LOCH is still one of the best novels that JY wrote, I like WXB and XF better than GJ now.

My progression is such that I have moved from loving Guo Jing and didn't particularly hate Yang Guo, into loving WXB and XF most and completely hating YG now.

So please, share us your story about your love progression of JY main characters

    interesting, temujin.
as for me, i watched hsds79 when i was in sec sch. as tv was the main recreational home pastime (no computer then ), hsds79 became an important talking point among friends. i remember disliking zwj for leaving zzr at the altar . the reason is simple - being bought up in a traditional family, the virtues of promise is very well grained in me. i also remembered very clearly that one elder sister of mine cried for this incident. however, the show progressed well as all efforts were zoomed on zm - depicted to be the kindest and nicest zm in all series. all was well until the show ended in an anti-climax, with zm jumping off the cliff. i cried in fact. i can't sleep for the whole night. the only time i ever cried for a series.

i also watched tvb loch and roch. to admit, i hardly remember the details of theses two shows, though i prefer loch probably because of witty huang rong.

hsds continues to be my favorite. when hsds86 was shown, i was happy that zwj and zm were together in the end. henceforth, i was hoping that one day zwj will be with zzr.

but since coming to the forum, my views did change a bit. before that, i never learnt that zzr was such an ambitious person (based on the novel); zwj is afterall a nice ordinary person and xz is much more adorable. i am extremely surprised that xz has many supporters in this forum, because in the past, xz to me is just a "servant". however, because of the constant druming, i began to like xz. actually, i wanted to "scold" green destiny in her first post i read for depicting xz as something as her dog, a term used to represent "loyal" servant. hence, the biggest change - i will like xz to be with zwj than zzr. hehe. hehe.

ok. for me, my 1st wuxia show was heaven sword and dragon sabre 86. I really like ZWJ because I found him so innocent and kind. it make things a little exciting too that a couple of girls were also attracted to him by these qualities. but now that I am 10 years older, I find myself liking more arrogant characters who are also skillful. ..like perhaps Yang Guo. I never liked Yang Guo previously but now I actually find ZWJ was indeed indecisive and quite a wimp.

A side comment, a friend told me that ZWJ is not honest. I was surprise but she explained that an indecisive person will not be honest because he will not want to hurt people's feelinsg until he is absolutely sure of his thots and therefore will inevitably lie in order to maintain peace and harmony in the meanwhile. I found her explaination justified and that has deminished ZWJ's attraction for me.

As for Guo Jing, I never like him much though going by description, he sounds great. simple, honest and honourable as well as quite devoted. my impression of GJ came from the various adaptations I tried to watch. He always bores me. maybe, GJ is not that a boring person but every actor that has portrayed him bored me with their portrayal..so I am left to believe that GJ is a very boring character and will not appeal to me in real life..unless I am truly touched by his kind-heartedness.

I now find Wei Xiao Bao fun to be with though in the past, I would have condemn his behaviour. also, now I feel that his street-smart intelligence is so necessary to get around in our society and will not mind being that street-smart myself.

I still like Zhang San Feng for being wise and understanding always.

on the contrary, my dislike for zwj reduced after joining this forum. influenced possibly by ken who argue so passionately about the good sides of zwj. hehe. hehe.

For me it was the XAJH serials(not sure which ver but its not too old) and the recent HSDS serials that got me interested in jin yong novels.Though I have seen ROCH(andy lau as YG and another one-singapore ver) and Duke of Mt. Deer(stephen chow as WXB I think) they dun really capture my attention maybe I was still too young back then.

Right now I m rather interested in LOCH so I m reading the translated English ver here but I might rent the whole LOCH serials.

I think Huang Rong and GJ are the best couple, but for HSDS...even though ZWJ ended up with ZM, i kept hoping he would end up with ZZR...cause alec su and gao yuan yuan look cuter together.

I think it's Calvin, or Cavin...? Or maybe it is Kelvin... Or Kevin?
DY is Dwyn Dawn, his dad Joseph Dawn, his uncle Johannes Dawn Ciong Ling is Julie, Ah-Zhu is Jade, ... I forgot WYY's
But when it goes to second chapter (about XZ) it back to original name. So there's no western name for Ah Zhi etc.

It's Chief Kelvin for XF, and if I'm not mistaken it's Dwynn Dawn (with double "n" in "Dwynn") for DY. Miss Wood for MWQ, and Miss Ong (or Wong?) for WYY.

I'm one who rereads novels quite regularly. In the initial pass, I only liked Huang Rong and LHC! Then the more I read...

    - I like GJ, ZWJ,XF,WXB more
    - I like LHC less and less (see the long LHC thread)
    - I start disliking YG, DY, XZ, HF.
    - Neutral on CJL and YSZ.

The only thing that stays almost constant is that I like all main female characters and the more I read, the more I like them hehehe (except for XLN and WYY).

My first JY novel was xue shan fei hu which i read 3 years ago. I was addicted to wuxia novels after that. Since then, ive read all of JY's books except Lian cheng jue and bi xue jian. The first adaption i watched was the mainland version of XAJH. Although I haven't re-read any of the novels yet, i found that i liked some characters more/less based on the adaptions i watched.

GJ - didn't like much in novel, liked even less in LOCH 03
HR- fav female character , liked in LOCH 03
LHC - liked lot in the novel, still liked in XAJH 01
RYY - liked in the novel, liked in XAJH 01
ZWJ - didn't like in novel, didn't like in HSDS 01
    ZM - same as above
ZZR - didn't like in novel, was symathetic towards her in HSDS 01
XF- fav male character, liked in TLBB 03
Ah Zhu - neutral in novel, liked in TLBB 03
DY - liked in novel, neutral in TLBB 03
WYY- neutral in novel, didn't like in TLBB 03
YG - liked in novel, loved in ROCH 95
XLN- neutral in novel, neutral in ROCH 95
GF - hated in novel, hated in ROCH 95
GX - liked in novel, neutral in ROCH 95
WXB - fav male character, havent watched any adaptions yet

GJ - he is one lucky guy, talented but kinna slow. can't find any reasons to like or dislike him
HR- all time fave female character, a lot of ppl said that i'm quite like her (still dont know if its good or bad) but she's my fav.
XF- can't say enough about him
Ah Zhu - like her quite well with XF in novels or in TLBB03
Ah Zhi - like her in novel, like her in TLBB03, one of my fave characters
DY - liked in novel, but found him dislikable in TLBB 03
MRF- loved him in the novel, hate him in the movies
WYY- never liked her in novel nor in movies
YG - never liked him, novel nor in movies
XLN- just can't quite figure her out . she's kinna odd. but don't really have any feelings toward her
WXB - loved in him novel, loved him in movies (the old version), now just love Tony Leung

the relationship between YG and XLN makes me feel kinna uncomfortable in someway. but anyhoo, the rest of JY's work, either i watched them a long time ago or never really cared to notice the characters, most of them are for entertainment. but LoCH & TLBB are the ones i actually paid more attention to because of the plot, characters, and they are somewhat closer/related to life and Buddhism .
