The sleeve is no more powerful than a person holding a sleeve or whip would be. Anybody can choose to have his sleeve-like weapon, but he can't choose to have an arm.
No, not "anybody" could have a sleeve-like weapon. It worked for him because he had the talent to make it work, and because he specifically trained himself to utilize it as such. It was something that he might never have thought of developing had he not lost that arm, but because he did, he discovered a new way of attacking that surpassed his previous ways.

I'd be wary of that sleeve; it seemed quite devastating.

He used it within a month after his arm got cut off against Guo Fu; there wasn't any specific training. He just developed superior inner power and martial arts theory.

If he could develop such skills with a sleeve, I don't see why he wouldn't develop even better skills if he had an arm to use it with.

There really is no indication that his sleeve skills were impressive at all (considering he's a Great....and Greats can make anything look good), except that once or twice JY decided to mention he had a sleeve.

and to add insult to injury(haha, cant help myself), GJ had L/R technique which is pretty much the equivalent of 4 arms to YG's 1. talk about disadvantage...

I kind of wonder if Gwok Jing could grab hold of the sleeve and strangle Yeung Gor with it.

Well YG's sword technique is designed to blow through techniques (which is what L/R is at the end of the day), so he has that going for him. Surely he could apply those principles even to barehanded fighting...but it would lead to an inner power duel probably.

In a martial arts contest I would definitely put my money on GJ, but in a life or death scenario, I think the two would be evenly matched.

I've always seen GJ as a more complete martial artist while YG was lucky enough to learn HIS. The point of martial arts and fighting is to win, and HIS seems better at simply winning even if it's not as sophisticated as other arts. Kind of like Shaq. Wouldn't really be asking him for tips on basketball over other all time greats, but there's no denying that even with less knowledge, he would trounce all but one or two. His ability to just put the ball through the hoop outweighs all other weaknesses of his game.

Yang Guo's Sad Palm in the end of RotCH which he used vs JLFW is a desperation move akin to fighting games super move (Metsu Hadouken by Ryu in Street Fighter IV). Thus it should pack more punch.

Therefore this move must be compare with another desperation move.

As far as I recall, Guo Jing never did any desperation move. Neither did Zhou Bu Tong.

Guo Jing > Yang Guo (at end of RoCH)

It was an application of his training in the Ancient Tomb martial arts, which specializes in the use of 'soft' weapons for 'hard' effects, hence LMC's whisk, XLN's length of cloth with a bell etc.

That is true...I forgot about that particularly specialty. But what I meant was that having the sleeve did not make up for the loss of an arm. The reason his sleeve became formidable was his increase in overall martial arts and inner power rather than a conscious decision to practice sleeve/soft skills.

The only other instance I really remember about the sleeve was his fight with GWM, where he was hoping to lure and surprise him with a sleeve attack, but it was glaringly obvious even to GWM who's poor martial instincts we jest about. Having an arm would have been much better for him.

The way I see it is the way aging athletes like Kobe, Jordan, and even Lebron to an extant lost some physical gifts (an arm in the case of YG), and are forced to develop other skills. They might even have become better overall players, but it would be hard to deny that they wouldn't have been better off if they magically didn't lose their physical attributes.

If nothing else, if he still had both arms, he could have trained in Dragon Subduing Palms instead of having to devise his own technique that worked around his missing arm. And let's not forget it was his sword arm that he lost, which even for an ordinary person would result in quite the upheaval (even we assume changing the primary hand rather than losing it altogether). From a right handed fighter specialising in the use of befuddling sword techniques and qing gong, with a month's training Yang Guo became a left handed swordsman specialising in brute force and able to blow through previously superior opponents with a single stance, whilst not able to move his feet.

You are implying that a no hand YG with two empty sleeves would beat or at least draw a one-arm YG. Totally bias and doesn't make sense at all.

As long as Yeung Gor loses, I don't give a damn how he does, even if he has to beat himself.

Which means ... deep down ... no matter how much you hate YG, you know GJ would lose to him heh? :P

He needs to beat himself first as a qualifier round before he gets the chance to take on Gwok Jing.

Well to be honest no one Greats ever lose to ZBT L/R hand skill in 1 vs 1 duel so though YG might not win against GJ he wouldn't lose too..

No one else in LOCH/ROCH has arts with the synergy to match GJ. He can at least match YG in power (HYS rates GJ's XL18Z as the only match for YG's SP in power), but he also has Vacant Fists with which to conserve energy, and he also has 2 arms and L/R with which to use them. And he also has 9yin with which to further increase efficiency. YG might be able to surpass GJ in exploring theory, but GJ would win any fight, even if it would require all his skills and resources and lots of time.
