    Default Suggested itenary to Malaysia/Singapore

I am going to Singapore/Malaysia for 2 weeks.

I know a lot of posters are from that region, any suggestions of how to travel between points, food/restaurants I should try, precautions.

Want to see chimpanzees, beaches and elephants.

My plan for Singapore is kind of in place, as I've been there before. 1 night at night Safari, 1 day at Sentosa, 1 day with birds, rest shopping and food.

Malaysia 1 day/night at Kuala Lumpar; the rest I am not sure.

No naturally-occuring chimpanzees in Malaysia. But you can see them in the Singapore Zoo (the day-time one) or Zu Negara in Malaysia.

Then again, you're probably referring to the orang-utan. If you want to see wild ones in forest reserves, you'd have to go to Sabah, which means a(nother) flight from Kuala Lumpur. There is also an elephant camp (where tourists can actually bathe/play with the elephants in the river) that is accessible by road from KL (no need to fly at all). Let me know if you want to visit the camp.

If you want to see captive orang-utan and elephants, just visit the Singapore Zoo or Zu Negara.

What exactly do you want to do in Malaysia?
How many days/nights do you intend to spend here?
How far are you willing to travel from Kuala Lumpur, assuming that KL is your base?
    Any travelling companions?

You are not putting Universal Studios as one of your destination points? Maybe you'd like to visit the casinos too, just to see how it is like?

i really think the universal studios is pretty good ~ they have new attractions in it so its definitely worth going....^___^

but he said 'sentosa' for a day..and universal studios will take a day already...maybe he could expand that up to sentosa for 2 days.

    Thanks HYS

Sorry yes Orangutan is what I mean.

I am traveling with my gf, and she really wants to see orangutan in the rehab centre and elephants too.
14 day trip, so 12 days in between to do what we want, planning 3 days in singapore, so that gives us 9 days in malaysia.
Things we were planning to do, food , shopping, she wants beaches and animals, i wouldn't mind seeing some historical sites.
I am not really sure how we are going to do Malaysia, I prefer to do things on my own rather than tour group, but it looks complicated; I think we will focus on Malaysia and Sabah.

1-2 days at KL, batu caves and malacca, is the fish foot massage for real?
There's a big national forest up north right? and cameron highlands

Not sure about Penang, although snake temple sounds very interesting

I don't know how many days at Sabah, orangutans, beaches and turtle island, diving; no hiking thanks

This is going to cost me , china was much cheaper

OK, now that I have an idea what you/GF want to do, I'll come up with a possible itinerary by tonight (Malaysia time). Get back to soon!

    I'm back.

Since you have 9 days in Malaysia, I'm going to suggest a more leisurely pace where you stay put in one place (base) for a while and visit the nearby/outlying attractions, rather that spending time on the road, travelling from one place to another.

For a start, consider 4-5 days in Sandakan, Sabah.
You can get there from Singapore using AirAsia. Fly into Kota Kinabalu, then take a connecting flight to Sandakan.

    She wants beaches and animals.
In Sandakan, there are the Sepilok Orang Utan Sanctuary (jungle/animal) and Turtle Island Park (beach/animal). There are also Lankayan Island and Libaran Island, where you can enjoy the sea and the sand, and even dive if you want to.

You want historical sites and Malacca (which is basically a historical site anyway).
In Sandakan, there is the Sandakan Heritage Trail, Agnes Keith House and St Michael's/All Angels Church. It's going to be similar to Malacca, and with Chinese temples, it's going to be a bit like Penang.
(IMHO, the Snake Temple in Penang isn't really great. I don't recommend it to tourists).

    You want Batu Caves.
In Sandakan, there is Gomantong Cave, which with edible birds' nest, forests, etc, might be better than Batu Caves, which is basically a Hindu temple, and pretty commercialised at that.
Gomantong Cave will also give you a bit of the "jungle" experience of the National Forest Reserve in Peninsula Malaysia.

Then, when you're all done, fly (AirAsia) from Sandakan to Kota Kinabalu, and take a connecting flight to Kuala Lumpur. Once you get to KL, you can eat and shop and see the "big city" sights, like the Twin Towers, KLCC Aquaria, etc.

For the best eats/shopping in KL, you might want to get hold of Ian Liew for ideas/recommendations.

And if you have time and want to visit my corner of Malaysia (the Royal Town of Klang, not far from KL), please let me know. I can take you to a fish foot massage place just 5 minutes away from my home. If you really want to visit my town, I'd suggest coming in the late afternoon. I'll pick you up at the train station (yes, you get a chance to try the inter-city train) after work (if it's a weekday) and give you a brief intro/tour on the way to the fish foot massage thingy; then you can shop (there's a mall here that's good for casual/work clothes) and we can have dinner together before you head back to KL.

Save Malacca, Penang, Cameron Highlands and the National Forest Reserve and the Elephant Camp for another 9-day visit to Malaysia. IMHO, the National Forest Reserve alone is worthy of a 2nd trip, during a drier season.

    Hope that helps.

    Selamat Datang ke Malaysia.

It's opened since april this year. I went with my friends when it opened and it has a few new attractions on top of some regular stuff you'd see in other universal studios; but cos I went on a Saturday it's so pack with people I didn't get to try out all the rides :-( if u wanna go avoid weekends, public holidays and school holidays.

Hey Yittzie! Would you mind Homestay instead of staying in hotels? It's a semi-detach house, no swimming pool. Breakfast will be provided. You can gain a living-in-Singapore experience, which will cost alot lesser than staying in hotels. The venue is accessible to shopping centres and local food centres too.

It's my Uncle and Aunt's place actually. Just an option opened for you.

P/s: BTW, there are 3 Copthornes in SG: King Copthorne, Corpthorne Orchid and Grand Copthorne Waterfront. Which one was yours? King and Grand each cost SGD$200++ so yours was Orchid?

Is it hard getting from Singapore to KL without flying, and from KL to surrounding places via public transport?

And flights from Singapore to Kota kinabalu, then to Sandakan, then to KL is that easy to book?

I think I've got my itenary almost sorted

    3 days/3 nights in singapore
sentosa, Universal studios, zoo morning feed/night safari, ?bird park, chinatown/little india, shopping

    4-5 days in Sandakan
Sepilok Orangutan sanctuary, Guomingtong Caves, Turtle island, Lankaryan Island for diving
Is it difficult to get to different places; easy to travel via taxi?

    5-6 days in KL base
1 day at Kuala Gandoh, elephants
    1-2 Pangkor
2-3 days at KL - Petronas towers, KL city centre, parks, chinatown night markets, shopping food , fish foot massage
    ? Malacca, ?Ipoh, ?putrajaya

Oh, and if you're looking for hotels at M'sia as well, check out these agents: Agoda.com, Hotelclub.com, Zuji.com and Ratestogo.com! You may use them to compare the rates and packages.

I believe there is bus from SG to KL since they have buses from SG to Genting (since the bus will stop over at KL and move ahead to Genting).

Hey Kiddo, if you like the beaches, add Downtown East to your iternary too! There's a Wild Wild Wet there and won't cost so much. And also around that vicinity, there's Escape Theme Park! If you want food, food, food, you can try East Coast Park! Nothing so exciting there, only the clean beach, nice (quite costly) food and the usual cycling/inline skating stuff.

It's not hard, if you're willing to follow directions and advice carefully.

And flights from Singapore to Kota kinabalu, then to Sandakan, then to KL is that easy to book?
What is your plan so far?

Australia (or NZ?) to Singapore to Kota Kinabalu to Sandakan to KL to Singapore again, and then to Australia (or NZ)?

Try AirAsia (see link in post #11). It's owned by a Malaysian company, so it will be good for getting to Kota Kinabalu, Sandakan and KL. Then, you can leave KL by land (rail/train or bus), go to Singapore and catch your flight home.

    4-5 days in Sandakan
Sepilok Orangutan sanctuary, Guomingtong Caves, Turtle island, Lankaryan Island for diving
Is it difficult to get to different places; easy to travel via taxi?
Shouldn't be too difficult, since these are all recognised places of interest. Read the Sandakan website carefully (see my earlier post #11) and make a note of the phone numbers, email addresses and related websites. Directions should be available there, and if not, you can always email them to ask. In that way, even if you get lost or somewhat waylaid, you'd still be able to make sense of things, ask smart questions and make informed decisions.

    5-6 days in KL base
1 day at Kuala Gandoh, elephants
    1-2 Pangkor
2-3 days at KL - Petronas towers, KL city centre, parks, chinatown night markets, shopping food , fish foot massage
    ? Malacca, ?Ipoh, ?putrajaya
    1. Directions to Kuala Gandah by public transport from KL. Scroll down to "How to get there". It's quite detailed.

    2. Bus to Pangkor Island.
If you're going to be in Pangkor for 1-2 days, you might want to give Ipoh a miss, except if your visit coincides with kidd being in Ipoh. Kidd is from Ipoh, and if she happens to be there during your visit, it might be worth visiting since she's familiar with it and can take you around.
If not, Ipoh might not be interesting enough.

    3. Putrajaya is good mostly when there are special events, like the Flower Festival and the Hot-Air Balloon Festival, etc, etc. If not, it can be quite boring. It is accessible by bus from KL.

    4. Melaka. We are planning a school day-trip (with my students) on 22 November, and one of the possible destinations is Melaka. Now if that coincides with your visit and we are really going to Melaka and you are willing to pay for the ride, you can probably come on the bus with us! :P
If not, you can always take the public bus to Melaka.

    5. So are you coming to visit me in Klang? Please let me know.

    What do you guys think?
Sounds a bit hectic, especially the last leg (KL) that has you running all over the western peninsula on day-trips.

When are you planning to visit anyway?

    Hey yittz,

How is your preparation for the trip coming along?

We're not going to Melaka for the school trip anymore. Instead, we'll be going to Zu Negara (National Zoo) on 19 November. We changed the date/place so that we can squeeze in a few more camps for the kids before the end of November.

Default Bukit Merah lake Resort, Taiping

There's an orangutan sanctuary there, only 3 hours from KL (depending on the driver). There were some jerks on the road when I went there some months ago.

Well he had it all planned out, but I haven't booked any thing but the flights.

Originally we were thinking of spending 4-5 days at Sabah; mainly for the orangutans, if we can see it in main peninsula, we might avoid sabah and spend more time in Singapore/KL and then visit Langkawi
